    “Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence?It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy.One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history.The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."

    A few facts about David Draiman, Disturbed, and this song in general:
    -David (the singer) is classically trained in opera. That's why he sounds like a fucking angel. He is also the most mellow, humble guy you'll ever meet.
    -This song was originally written and performed by Simon and Garfunkel in 1966. Paul Simon went on record to say that he absolutely loved Disturbed's cover.
    -The Sound of Silence is about indifference, intolerance, and antipathy of people in general. It's first version (acoustic) on Simon and Garfunkel's debut album did poorly, but it was remixed into it's current version (electric guitar, drums, ect) and it became the number 1 single overnight.
    -Disturbed's songs fall into the Heavy Metal genre, and typically cover themes such as loss, struggles with drug addiction and depression, and civil rights. A good example of the latter would be Ten Thousand Fists.

    One thing that says a lot is that Paul Simon loves and appreciates this cover of his song, and had even stated that Disturbed’s live cover of the song was a “really powerful performance”. And, it wasn’t just simply because his song was being covered, for this song was covered by someone else, and Simon wasn't really all that kicking on it. My own takeaway, when I first heard the cover -back when it was first released- I absolutely loved it, and thought it was the best cover version of this song. Even after all these years later, and having heard a bunch of other covers of this song, I still believe that Disturbed’s cover is the best one done of it, and still absolutely love it.

    “people talk without speaking”(texting),
    “people hear without listening” (fast paced living in one ear and out the other and don’t pay attention)
    “And the people bowed and scraped, to the neon God they made” (people being so attached to cellphones, tablets, etc.)

      TheEpic22 I was not intending it to be taken that way. I was only pointing out how I love how the song has the ability to have today’s times and issues applied to the song written before we had all of this.
      I know that Garfunkel has a deeper meaning as had a deeper meaning as he actually stated in an interview "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
      I just always find it amazing when songs can be interpreted by different generations and applied to that generations particular time.
      Much respect for pointing out it is a deeper meaning just wanted to let you know that my intent was not to depress anything.

      Great reaction!
      I have a different view. Every artist's work is affected by the time/era that they live in and their work is often a reflection of that era (btw, when it comes to music, I'm talking about real music, not the bubble-gum crap created in a record executive's studio and pumped out to a generation of intellectual zombies). Paul Simon wrote this song during the 1960's, an era known for social upheaval, the questioning of traditional values and norms by the youth and the creation of the counter-culture. One institution that started facing a lot of questions was the government. The 50's were over and so too were people's blind acceptance of whatever the government said was the 'truth'. For the first time, people started openly questioning and protesting their government's decisions about everything from Civil Rights to the Vietnam War and everything in between.
      I believe Paul Simon wrote this song as a warning to people to not remain silent when it came to questioning their government's decisions and their motives for those decisions, reminding everyone that, in a democracy, we are the ultimate check on a government running amok with power. As powerful as the words are, they were presented in a folk-song. Again, I believe this was the result of the era within which the song was created. The 'Flower Children' of the 60's believed love could conquer all and, to that end, there is no need to scream out a social message. It would be counter-productive, in that era, to present such a message in an angry way. The song explained what the stakes were and then warned us to keep our guard up and be ready to make some noise.
      Fast forward 50 years and it seems apparent that we did not heed the warning. Along comes Disturbed with a whole new take on this classic. The message is the same but the feel is very different. It's one of anger and frustration at all of us for not having heeded the original warning. As the song builds to it's climax, you can feel Draiman's combination of anger, pain and frustration at our failure as he seems to be telling us that we, through our silence, are responsible for the world that we now live in. However, this message does also come with a sliver of hope.
      The hope is that we can change things. We were the ones who made this mess so we should be the ones to clean it up. Step up, be heard and do your part to make the world a better place. It is the sort of mentality and outlook on life that seems to be inspiring millions of young people around the world to unite in organizing major, world-wide, protests for everything from gun-violence to climate change. This generation is using the tech to instantly organize massive protests around the world. In doing, so they are not only showing the way to older generations like mine, they might actually be living up to the challenge Paul Simon, and later Disturbed, gave all of us.
      My two cents, any way.

    So happy to see a young guy react to this song so well and actually get it, esp being from a genre that you wouldn't usually go for. It is deep! I hope you sat back and listened in its entirety, how it builds. The talent is off the scale. BTW check out what The Blacklist did with this track. Was the first place I heard it and it got me in the gut.

    This song was played at my friend's funeral 2 years ago. Hacking into the schools Internet made us friends, our love for Disterbed made us an unbreakable duo. Sadly cancer took his away from all of us who loved him. I'm glad you liked this amazing cover they done, but I agree with others, try down with the sickness 😉.

    To me this is the best song I've ever heard on this Earth. To take something from 1960s and to make it so real raw alive mysterious truth who can bring that in a song but David and Disturbed the band

    When I die, I want this song played at my wake. As an aspie and introverted guy, this does resonate with me. It's so deep and powerful that I know what it's like to be taken for granted, ignored, disrespected, and underestimated. No shit !

    I am sure Simon and Garfunkel would appreciate this rendition of their song. The ton of it and the ever increasing crescendo until the very end when it drops and goes soft once more.... epic.
    Also going to who the singer (David) reminded you of, he kinda reminds me of the ATF brother in law from Breaking Bad in this video.

I'll never forget. My baby who is now 16, loves music and he can thank me for his 1st experience. Omg I ate some "medicine" n rambling on 😂

    I love how so many people go "No! Dave doesn't look like Howie"
    Which is hilarious as no one ever mentioned Howie Mandel yet *EVERYONE* knew exactly who he meant...
    Occams Razor would suggest Dave does look a bit like Howie.

    • @elecjack1
      @elecjack1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, to be fair, there is only one well-known person he could have been talking about with his description. lol It was more a case of deductive reasoning. He could have said all of that in a random conversation and people still would have known who he was talking about.

    • @F1rstWorldNomaD
      @F1rstWorldNomaD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elecjack1 I wouldn't... Even so, its way more likely reason people knows who he means is cuz they actually does look somewhat alike.
      As I said, Occams Razor.

    • @theshut-in1097
      @theshut-in1097 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do not see how this has anything to do woth occams razor, but i know that they have similar hair, facial constructs and near similar facial fat deposits. If you google Howie Mandel, remove the beard and put the appropriate piercings then they could stunt doubles.
      However with simple deduction you can see that he is indeed referring to Howie because of the description he gave. Take note that he laidback resides in Cali and probably always has lived in the US. Most of the US children watch Deal or No Deal through their parents and become somewhat fond of it. David looks like him however he wore glasses at the time while playing on a game show.
      Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
      Find me one more that looks identical or at least bald, and wears glasses on a gameshow/talk show. Now that is occams razor because the rest look nothing less similar, arent wearing glasses and not a talkshow/gameshow host. Occams razor requires a few options to choose from.

      F1rst World NomaD Howie Mandel instantly went into my mind

    • @F1rstWorldNomaD
      @F1rstWorldNomaD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theshut-in1097 Not really.
      If you apply the common use version of "the simplest explanation is usually the right one."
      If everyone and their dog knows who he is talking about without mentioning his name (or even the right show) the simplest answers would be "because they look the same"
      I don't see how that's in any way hard logic to follow?
      Besides he didn't say deal or no deal, he said who wants to be a millioner. People automatically in their mind corrected it to deal or no deal and drew the parallel to Howie cuz they *know* what he looks like and saw the resemblance.
      If they *didn't* look alike people wouldn't go "ooh he's thinking of deal or no deal".
      My point stands.
      The reason people know who he is talking about *is* because they look the same.
