They also did a cover of Land of Confusion, it's pretty good but I'm not sure if worth reacting to.
My personal favourite of theirs is Perfect Insanity, so I hope you can do that, it's just solid on all points and has great energy.
They started out as a Nu-Metal band and slowly evolved to a more typical modern Hard Rock/Metal style.
A lot of their songs sound somewhat similar so they are very much a band I cherry pick songs from.
Their most famous song would be Down With The Sickness, which made them famous during the peak of Nu-Metal. I also quite liked Stupify back in the day, which was my favourite in the Nu-Metal era from them. The vocalist David Draiman was originally most known for using a distinctive caveman grunt like vocalization, some people made fun of him for that even though he is a great vocalist.
This Sound of Silence cover gained quite a bit of fame, as they even did live performances of it on late night shows. Don't expect much similar to this though.
"Stupify" was my intro to Disturbed and I really enjoy "Prayer". It was great to hear this played live and Myles Kennedy (another amazing singer from various projects) join David Draiman singer of Disturbed. Amazing.
“10,000 fists” is a good one! Also having seen Disturbed live multiple times I will tell you that David’s voice is as good of not better live than his studio performances. I was shocked!

When Paul Simon first heard this song, he contacted David from Disturbed, and told him the he now owns the song, he was so blown away with Disturbed's cover it. Praise indeed.

You're mixing covers and artists. It was Trent Reznor that said that about Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt and what he said was "“I wasn’t prepared for what I saw, and it really then, wasn’t my song anymore.”
Simon simply said he was impressed with the "powerful performance" on Conan.

@@IvarMeijer I actually completely disagree with almost everything said there. Yes, the original is a masterpiece. But as long as I've been around I've felt it needed to be darker. Then this cover came out and it was exactly what I felt it needed to be. This, Hurt and Red Sun Rising's cover of "Uninvited" are 3 of the best covers ever. I love the original "Sound of Silence" and "Uninvited" but loathed the original "Hurt". Prefer each of their covers.

I listened to the original as a kid...50 years later my high school son say's "Dad, check this song out." I was mesmerized and played this over and over and over a hundred times..just powerful, amazing job on a classic that nobody thought could ever be topped.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. My now 26 year old son had me listen to it. It was on repeat over and over and over. I have cried, but most of all I sing it with him, almost without sound so I can hear his voice - but with all of the emotion behind it.

I figured that someone would put this up. The live version he did of this was amazing. Also, my understanding is that he was trained as an opera singer. That explains his vocal discipline.

Just a little fact, Disturbed has now made this version of The sound of silence, one of the all time downloaded/played songs to date. It is like Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. That became an instant classic once he did it. This song became a classic back when Simon and Garfunkel performed it in 1969. Now Disturbed's version has become a classic for new generations of listeners. I've heard other bands and performers do this song, but they have never had the power and feeling as the original, until now. Disturbed has matched the power and feeling of the original while also adding their own spin to make it theirs.
IMO...I don't feel that a better cover has ever been belted out!

Same here. Just seems far more relevant today than when I first listened to it as a teenager. Relevant because there is so much less real life interaction in the age of the internet, the new neon God. To me it speaks of alienation, of press this button, fill in this form. Computer says no.
Guy's voice is just amazing. I love the way it goes from tender to angry. Negative to positive at the end. This is a cautionary tale for all of us, to listen to those real voices on the subway wall. To connect in real life, we are human. Just beautiful.

Love your analogy. Mine so far was just a different phase in the reaction process to a problem : Disturbed are stuck at the revolt stage, while S&G are already at the resignation phase. (the usual denial into revolt into acceptance/resignation pattern)

At first David's voice caresses you. Then it rattles your bones.
This is one of the few times that the cover blows the original away and makes the original sound like it was done by a child.
He started out the song in a very melancholy type of presentation which totally fits the original meaning of the song. And he ended very angry about the lack of humanity in our world and it fit completely and perfectly. This song is permanently on my playlist

My Dad said he was not a huge fan of the thought of listening to a cover of this song. He now says it is his favourite and is now a Disturbed Fan. He is almost 70 now.
Fantastic song, fantastic cover. My folks tend to think music stopped after 1980, but it's still going and going strong. Probably a lesson for all of us, especially those who enjoy reaction videos of classic songs. Not preaching, just something I've been thinking about.
@@chuckybeastly3600 you definitely are right on a few things. To me mainstream music died in the early 90s, and sadly, had to swim just out on the edges. There are some great bands that came out of the 80s and 90s, then around early 2k, they had to hide their arts for a while as synthetic music took over.

I am like your Dad, and for 40 years I thought no one could do a S&G cover justice. I am glad Disturbed proved me wrong. First time i heard it I went a little misty eyed.
Paul Simon was 21 or 23 when he wrote this iconic song. He said this is his favourite version. David Draiman trained as a cantor, hence the voice control, and comes from a long line of cantors. Many of us always feel that the original version was a warning to us to heed the world and how things were progressing. This version is what happens when we don't hear the warning. Listen to him singing live on the Conan O'Brien show as many of us prefer this version. David was sick but insisted on singing and had to be carried off stage at the end.
From the resignation to what's going on in the original to the resistance to what's going on in the Disturbed cover, Brilliant. I'm 58 and know the Simon & Garfunkel well but this gives me goosebumps every time
This song absolutely broke me. A few minutes after my dad passed away, the phone of someone in the room started playing... He hadn't moved, didn't touch his phone, hadn't been listening to it beforehand, it was inexplicable. We used it as the closing song at his funeral, and the day we spread his ashes we heard it 4 times, twice on the radio and twice in different shops at different times. It's forever attached to my heart xx

My husband loved this song and played it all the time, when he passed I had it played at his funeral. There is something very special about this version that you can’t put into words
its honest and meaning, its true. the original was artifical, it was ment to be specialyl meaningful, just like a motivational calendar and stayed shallow.
this version however brought in every fiber of the lead singers beeing, a true believer in this message. its not just following a trend in the 60s, its finding meaning in it in todays world

And he said sorry, I have to pause to tell you my thoughts on the other parts and then....no pause. I think he was stunned. I know I was the very first time I heard it on the radio. I literally had the same thought he did back when it played on the radio going "Here comes the guitar riff". It's just powerful, emotional, and strong. And yes, I am old, but I do like rock.

I don't get that myself. Personally I always figured this one was a lot more passionate and goes from morose to triumphant where as the original was fairly monotone throughout the entire song.

I'm sure I'm years late, but the singer, David Draiman, (i think thats how its spelled) was raised as a Cantor in his church and grew up learning how to use his voice. Which makes his voice as a metal singer phenomenal and also shines on his covers of songs where people see "metal cover" and get freaked out, not knowing hes a trained and very successful singer! Much love brother man

I feel like this version truly does the lyrics justice. The original feels too folky and light for the weight of what the words are carrying. With the Disturbed version it truly hits you with the weight and the emotions of what this song is supposed to mean

YESSSS! My husband and I just heard this for the first time yesterday. It was their performance on Conan from several years ago, and now I’m obsessed. My husband was powerfully moved by the words and I realized he had never really ‘heard’ them before and we discussed the very thing you’re talking about.
Paul Simon was only 21 when he wrote the song. He deserves massive mountains of credit. And btw, Disturbed’s version is the only cover Paul Simon’s put on his social media.

Disturbed usually has a cover on every album. Their cover of “Land of Confusion” by Genesis is a great one.
I approve of their cover of Faith No More's "Midlife Crisis".
Honestly it’s hard to watch their video for it tho cuz the Genesis video is just so insane. I like both versions a lot but audio I have to go with Disturbed.

The visuals that were put into this video to compliment the lyrics are simply brilliant! It’s presenting this song to us as it’s never been seen before. And David’s voice is an instrument all on its own.

I read various ideas of what the lyrics mean and so far I disagree with all. This cover with visuals tells me a story. The sound of silence is when two sides that should complement each other get lost and are separated. The instruments that had been left behind would be able to play the music the voices never share. I see this as a homeless person’s dream, from which he can’t wake, and who knows there is wisdom in all men’s words, even graffiti on tenement halls has meaning. The song begins with the man taking the guitar in search of music, then the timpani joins and by the end, many other musicians follow. Lesson: it only takes one person (and a dream …ok, too corny?) who tries when hope seems lost.
I just can't express into words just how profound this cover AND video is for me ! I burst into tears every single time I hear it ! I am 65 yrs old and I think this is actually how this song should be sung ! Love it!

My granddaughter ran across this song. And I told her, I loved the original. THEN, I listened to this version and am in AWE! MY favorite version now. This guy has a beautiful voice!
Just wait till you hear some of their other music...or Device's music...he is lead singer in both bands.
That is exactly what happened to me. My 11 year old grandson told me about it and I replied the same.....I loved the original. I was blown away and still am every time I hear it.
When my daughter told me about this, I thought. No Way, Jose. Nobody can do it better than Simon and Garfunkel, but Wow! and Wow! I was blown away by this voice and version.

David has one of the most powerfull and dynamic vocals in music today. I think people overlook his incredible vocal control and range because of the genera of music. Considering how long he has been performing Metal for, he has taken exceptional care of his vocal chords and it shows in this cover. It's an amazing cover (possibly the the best of any ) and it blows me away ever time I hear it.
Funny you mention him taking exceptional care of his vocal folds (not "chords") considering he almost lost his ability to sing by damaging his voice through bad technique. He definitely did not take exceptional care of his voice for a long time, but you can bet that he does now after that near career-ending mistake.
i feel the same away about Jack Black...the guy is GOOD...but he does "weird rock" so people dismiss him....

When I first heard this version, it made me forget Simon and Garfunkel did this first. That's how much I love this version. We owned the vinyl record of the Simon and Garfunkel version. This version is the one that makes you actually feel the song and know what the song actually means. The anger and frustration is heard here. It's beautiful!

I got to meet David about 20 years ago. I had helped a friend of mine set up his band's equipment as they opened for Disturbed a a local venue in northern Illinois. Mr. Draimon is a gentleman.

YESSSSSSS IT IS SPECTACULAR !! He has a range that you actually think for a second it's someone else's voice when he goes soft until he digs deep and then his thunderous Voice bursts out goes right through you like a reverberation of a thunder cloud and giant concert speakers only it's his Voice doing it !! He's impressed me more than any rocker since the 70's or earlier has or pretty much any genre. He's something special that only comes along once in a while and I pray we get to keep it for a very very long time . There's so much promise in a voice like that . Everyone should hear him and know his voice doesn't always reflect the Name of his band he's a screamer but he's a classically trained musician and pianist and has a voice with unbelievable range . His two voices are so polarizingly beautiful, on one side the liquid gold silky smooth tones, on the other side the super aggressive buzz saw ripping distorted tones. Perfect.

Some would argue that Johnny Cash's version of Hurt from NIN is the best cover ever. For me, they are both in my unordered top 5 covers.
I can never listen to this song without having some kind of religious experience for a religion I don't follow. I shiver, tears hit my eyes. It's honestly a masterpiece in building up a song through the instruments, the introduction of the instruments. The powerful vocalist leading the song solo. The change from a whisper to a rousing call. I just love every moment of this cover.
Masterpiece is a good description. The build up was on point in relation to the vocal building. The lighter counterpoint in piano and guitar put light into the darkness. This I love. I hate the formulaic, standard build up in pop songs that affect the solar plexus without having any real meaning. This slips sideways into the heart and then the soul and brings the clarity in its meaning through that unification.

David Draiman was taught by a opera singer, so when he does his hard rock or screaming, he will not destroy his vocal chords. So that's why he is such a dam good singer!!

I heard him in a interview say he was taught by a opera singer so he could do his "screaming or yelling" so he would not wreck his vocal chords.
@@melgerlach6356 You're right man, the guy misunderstood your comment. He was trained as a cantor, but that doesn't exclude the possibility that he may have been trained by an opera singer at some point.
I am so in love with him and his voice. The way he uses his instrument is awe inspiring. I tend to think that influence had a lot to do with the perfect blend of his vocals with the string instruments in this arrangement. Perfection.
The live performance of this song on “Conan” is by far the best version. You owe it to yourself to check it out. David was sick with the flu during the performance and absolutely blew everyone away.

I know the original of this song from my parents era but I have never really heard this song until David's cover version and my god it has changed my life. This one song version unlocks almost every emotion in me every time I hear it like very few songs ever can.

David’s version of Sound of Silence has forever changed my image and understanding of this piece of music. I’ve never been a heavy metal fan but I went looking for more of David’s songs to add to my music collection and I found “Hold on To Your Memories” in the same month that I said goodbye to my mom as well as our beloved 10 year old dog. Disturbed will always have a very special place in my heart as a result. What an amazing vocalist!

If you do not get goosebumps listening to this song, there is something seriously wrong with you.
The goosebumps from listening to music is called frisson and not everybody can experience it. There's nothing wrong with them, I think it's more that we have something extra.

He said he never had, and looked at me like I was bizzare...which he frequently does anyway. He's 68 years old and still hasn't experienced it. So after having watched this video several times through various reactions, I noticed something interesting. While the song is undoubtedly angry that no one has heeded the warning, there's also a moment of extreme sadness and grief. When David sings the line "silence like a cancer grows", the look in his eyes is so profoundly sad... It's such a contrast to the frustration and rage in the rest of the song that it hit me straight in the soul.
The message of the son still hasn't been received. We stand in silence and allow so many things to happen around us and do nothing. We must stand and we much shout as loud as we can and be heard! Xx
It is the "stages of grief" he is singing about... or trying to get you to feel even if you can't hear his words.
The original was the warning... This is the consequence.
I completely agree with you, the absolute sorrow in his facial expressions, combined with the slight sob at the end of the line, moves me to tears every time. What few people mention about the video, though, is the sun rising on the horizon at the end, signifying hope and new beginnings. Masterfully done!

Every time I listen and watch this version, my body reacts with goosebumps all over, and my eyes fill as if I am going to cry, my heart thumps. It happens every time. The whole experience of it, but his voice is something else 😍

@@jugularstab that’s the beauty of art, something can invoke great emotion in one observer/listener and nothing to another. Let’s not forget that this is one of the best songs ever written and S&G’s harmonies give the song an ethereal quality which is also amazing. For me though the way David brings more grit and emotion as the song goes on is another excellent take and I really think it also works well with the lyrics and the tone.

I always end up with tears streaming down my face while listening to this version. This is quite simply the best cover I’ve ever heard. I don’t like them as a general rule, but this one is in Johnny Cash’s ‘Hurt’ territory. The original is so powerful on its own, but this version really brings out the loneliness and anger in the lyrics. David Draiman has always delivered incredible vocals, but this is absolutely his best work.

Bottom line, while I love Paul Simon, THIS is how this song should always have been performed. I have lost track of how many times I have listened to this version and I never fail to get goosebumps.

I remember sitting in the car, with my wife, while my mother was diagnosed with agressive cancer a couple of months before. It was quite obvious she would not have a long time to live left. This song and version was played on the radio and it broke me completely. I couldn't stop crying for the entire song and probably for 10 minutes after the song ended still. All my pain, fear, anger, etc came out. My mother passed away last year on the result of this cancer. But when I hear this song I still remember this dark page in my life. I still need to cry everytime when I hear it. It still gives my goose bumps. But the song also gives me strength, comfort and it also gives me a moment when I think back to my mother when I hear it, and reminds me how much she is missed. I hear this song with a smile and a tear. So for that, thank you Disturbed! For all this song gave me and the power of your music.

David Draiman and Disturbed are known more for heavier rock and the grit in his voice, but David does have classical training as well which you saw on display.
Darkness is another great song to show off his clean vocals.
For metal singers, classical training is imperative. You need the control over your voice to safely do distortion and not damage your vocal chords.

I cannot believe ive only heard this in the past week. And hav listened to it at least fifty times so far. At 72 it has always been one of my most favorite songs but this version has absolutely blown me away. Cant believe this was nearly 10 yrs ago and i am just now hearing this and learning about this band!!!!! Brand new favorites!!!!!! And i just ordered my first Cd of them with this song.
