    Have a great day, folks.

One thing I have noticed. It’s not the lyrics or the meaning behind the lyrics that makes people tear up. It’s Draiman’s voice. It’s his delivery. That’s what does it. I can listen to this 5 times in a row and will have tears on my cheek every time.

Me too.. you really don’t need to know what the song is about.. just listen.. or.. if you are watching the video.. just watch the sadness build into anger in his expressions, his beautiful voice, and those haunting eyes.. ( that are gorgeous BTW) AND listen with your heart and soul.. not your ears. I grew up on Simon and Garfunkel singing this song. I liked it, every now and then. It’s was actually kinda boring to me. This man stirred my heart and my soul with this version.. He was born to sing this song, it was written years ago .. JUST FOR HIM. I love him, for making me feel this song.

The original was written in the early 60's. I believe 1964, when Vietnam was raging. I was a teenager. People were taking to the streets protesting, trying to be heard but no one listened. This song said a lot about what was going on in the world. Sadly enough history seems to be repeating itself!!! The original of Simon and Garfunkel is great and Disturbed version is amazing!!!! Paul Simon sent David Draiman a note saying this version is the best he had ever heard!!

we rarely think of the evil inside of ourselves as hurting us and others, but it truly does. the hardest truths to come to grips with is that we are the villains who believe oursevles to be saints, and we want ourselves to win. the truth hurts, and people avoid destroying evil, by believing their evil is benign. we are evil. to deny so that we are is to sweep it under the rug, to learn nothing and let history repeat itself, to let millions die without realizing the truth. we are not only the heros of our stories, but also the villians of others stories. one of the hard things in life is to realize, is that the devil sleeps within our hearts. let us pray he never wakes.

My daughter argued with me that I had to listen to this version, a soft and calm song covered by a metal band. No, not going to do it. Much later I did listen and it shocked me beyond measurement. I've listened to it hundreds of times, sometimes five or more repeats.
I sat here and listened, and even after nearly (figuratively) wearing out the record, I still had chills. I even had tears. Your reaction was so contagious.

David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is very difficult to do, and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on the performance Lau. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Violence Fetish" and "Enough" by Disturbed too. They are a bit "heavier" ....lol...

Too many people only pay attention to the words and overlook the video. To me, this version is more of a criticism of today's music industry. The buried instruments, the musicians separated from the writers... The video transmits a more powerful message than the lyrics of the song: what's the point of having music composers if there aren't musicians to play the music and vice-versa? Music need real instruments to be dug up and played again and music composers need to be rejoined with real musicians.

The original, released in 1964, was a social commentary at the core. It was about the inability of people to really communicate and connect with each other. The neon god was a reference to technology. How ironic that Paul Simon saw way back in 1964 that people were paying more attention to technology than each other. How much more true is that today!?
For the video, Disturbed took a bit more literal interpretation of the lyrics. You see the musicians picking up long disused instruments, implying that the silence had been there for a long time. Then you see the songwriters, writing their songs, but there was only silence. There was no music to allow their songs to be heard. Finally, you see the musicians on the boat crossing over, bringing music to the songwriters and breaking the long silence. "People writing songs that voices never shared. No one dared disturb the sound of silence."
One detail that's easy to miss is the rising sun in the last moments of the video, symbolizing the lifting of the darkness of silence.
My opinion and worth every penny you paid for it.

Every time I hear it, I tear up. I was active duty for 12 years...it's disturbing to me when I look around the world...and think about where we are, and where we are headed, as the human race. Silence is being forced on us by our own mankind, believing they are smarter. Or better. But look what we got.
...the people bowed and prayed, to the neon God they made...
What are we doing? Conservative? Liberal? As a kid, I never knew how my parents voted. It was sacrosanct. You didn't tell anyone how you voted. Not even your spouse. But now we've made it WHO we are. Not American. Not United. Enemies.

As someone who's pushing 60, I remember when my older sisters got this album by Simon & Garfunkle when this originally was released. The story behind the song was simple: Vietnam war was raging, civil liberties were being violated in the south by rich white politicians, and in general, people were very pissed at a lot of issues. Remember your history about Kennedy? People were still reeling from that just a few years prior. So in comes these folk artists, talking about talking w/out speaking (your actions), hearing w/out listening (ignoring other's opinions), writing songs that voices never sing (all the protest songs that were being written but never put to vinyl). As to the back story for the video, it looks like a post apocalyptic world where out countries have self destructed.

I was a kid when the original came out in the 60s. It and S & Gs song, the Boxer were the classic songs of alienation. It generally had an interpretation of being about the alienation of a few while surrounded by babbling masses. In other words a dysfunctional individual in a seemingly functional society. I love the original and this cover.
I think that this cover in context is more about a dysfunctional society rather than an individual.
I saw some lady from South America react to the Disturbed cover but with a different video that featured animation and hordes of people walking around oblivious to each other with cell phones. It was a great video.
Your reaction is very interesting. Thanks for sharing it!

For every person I've ever heard say "I don't like metal", there's a person who never really tried listening to metal. Metal music encompasses a great deal more than just screamed vocals or fast guitar licks; while I'm overjoyed that songs like this one get noticed beyond the band's core demographic, I'm equally saddened that so many of the same people who heap praise on this cover don't use it as an impetus to look further into the _many_ genres of metal.
    People hearing without listening. :(

Finally, someone else's reaction to hearing Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence" was identical to mine. I had never heard this cover before. I knew of Disturbed of course, but not this song. It immediately gave me goosebumps, then as it built in intensity, I was literally shaking. When it ended, I was almost in tears. Seems that just a change in tempo, then the way in which he use's his voice, (especially his articulation of consonants) to build intensity and emotion. The use of the instruments, outstanding ! This has convinced me that this isn't just a "cover", This is THE version of "The Sound of Silence" you want on your playlist ! Just one man's opinion of course !

I got to see them at a huge outdoor venue in Virginia Beach 22 years ago and didn't even know they were one of the bands-the last band to play 👍👍👍❤ ! This song makes me weep-I can't even breath toward the end ! I hope this is the only song played if someone has a gathering for my passing! Dont know if you'll even catch this comment , as you posted this video 8 months ago . But with the chance you do ,, your reaction is exactly why I prefer viewing a Womans response { in a heart wrenching experience } rather than a Mans . Men tend to either hide , cover or mask true heart felt feelings with bravado , a reluctance to show a broken heart or some other shield that will hide raw emotion . I dont understand why God created me with an ability { or curse } to fine tune into feelings { hidden or exposed } of those in emotional pain , dispair , loneliness , souls who have given up , hearts that seem to be crying out for human contact .. I say all that to say this ,,, I saw so much compassion and empathy in your facial expressions and body langauge that I really dont know which I felt stronger ,, the Song or your reaction . I do know this ,, watching you react greatly increased my enjoyment of the poetry put to music in this beautiful , ageless song .. I subscribed and will search for more videos at your site . Thank You for putting tears and chills out there for all to see . P.S, - There are lots of real Men out here that feel the heartbeat of the world like you do ..

I’m 55yrs old so I have heard Simon and Garfunkel’s songs on the good old record player they sent us this message through song and like said a few times already disturbed cover is a beautiful feeling very strong vocal rendition. I really what love to hear more music from the lead singer. He has amazing vocals from soft low tone bass to high rasp look into anyone’s soul vocals. Great reaction, I subbed and rang the bell lol :) Metal (Rock) has so many sub genre's so to understand and appreciate it all is hard if you are not used to listening to it, a lot of metal music is very emotional, for example Iron Maiden has a lot of songs based on history and fact. The singer from disturbed is classically voice trained. I guess what I am trying to say is that you probably have not heard enough heavy metal to appreciate the greatness that it has to offer.

The song whether by disturbed or S&G isn't different, the more robust version from Disturbed may call out more to your soul, particularly if you have been somewhere uncomfortable, where someone in your group, squad, unit was being drawn into the light, or if were the medic, nurse, doc... trying to lasso the toe and haul them back. The song for me brings memories, those I saved and those I lost, I don't sleep without thinking about those I didn't get home, I sleep because some got home... i toss and turn wondering about that maybe could have been, those i lost.
