My Grandfather was a Scottish Soldier who fought in the Boer War and was shot twice in the back. Not able to remove bullets. He was not helped much,and another was done to compensate him for the pain he had to endure. He always had a smile and chuckle for anyone, even if he didn't feel well Robert Veitch Brodie was a wonderful man and a loving Grandfather.

I love listening to the pipes My mothers family were Clan Gunn and her father was from a military family and went to South Africa in 1899 like your Grandfather to fight in the 2nd Boer war. He was career military and remained in South Africa eventually commanding a battalion of Zulus against Lettow Von Vorbeck in WW1 and built a close relationship with the Zulus buying a farm on the west bank of the River Tugela just south of where the Buffalo River (of Rorkes Drift fame) joined the Tugela. According to my mother it was farmed by his ex soldiers and their dependents of men lost. He also raised a battalion of Zulus in WW2 to fight in Burma. I wish I had known him BUT, only know what my mother told me about him; A strict disciplinarian who loved the Zulu nation and regarded the Zulus he commanded in both World Wars as the best soldiers he ever commanded and fought with. My mother also loved and respected the Zulu nation and always spoke highly of the Zulus - She also spoke isiZulu and Xhosa in addition to English and Afrikaans. My father was from a Welsh Clerical family and his father, my other Grandfather, was a Welsh Minister like all my fathers family were and did missionary work in Chile between graduating as a Doctor of Divinity and taking his first position as a Curate in the Diocese of St Asaph and then serving in the Trenches as a Padre, rising to Rural Dean of St Asaph before his death. I wish I had met and known both my Grandfathers and learnt more about them their experiences and our family history as they led amazing lives. Following family tradition I named my son after my Welsh Grandfather and he continued the tradition naming his son after my father. I gave my son the Welsh family bible and he has it with him in Australia. My mother loved the Andy Stewart show and whenever I hear the music or words of A Scottish Soldier I think of my mother and her father, especially the words "He wandered far away And soldiered far away ..... He's fought in many a fray And fought and won ......And now this soldier This Scottish soldier Will wander far no more And soldier far no more" and I think of all the Scottish and British soldiers who died overseas and never come home. Wherever I go in the world if there is a local Commonwealth Wargraves Cemetery I stop and say thank you to the men and women buried their and the names recorded on the "Wall of Remebrance" recording the names of men who served locally who have no known grave and who never saw their homes and families again.
My late Scottish mother loved this song, as do I. She came out to Australia in 1960. Though I offered in later years to take her back to Scotland for a holiday, she was adamant in her refusal; afraid that her beloved Scotland would have changed beyond recognition. She wished only to remember the Scotland of her girlhood. And though she'd watch the Edinburgh Tattoo every year, thinking wistfully of her Morningside home; she would never again see the land of her birth.
My father was from Dunoon, Scotland. He was a fighter pilot in the royal navy. He lived in North Carolina and I lived in Texas at the time of his death. However at his memorial service, the strangest and most beautiful thing happened as Daddy was singing this song over the loud speaker ...at his own funeral? It was beyond belief. Apparently a recording had been made prior to his death for a program at church, and they played it at this time as an amazing surprise! It was already a haunting song, but this was the icing on the cake. We used to watch Andy Stewart on the Andy Stewart show. Everybody loved him, especially Daddy.
My Dad, who was neither Scottish nor a soldier loved this song and we used it as part of his funeral 20 years ago. Australian born and bred. Thank you Andy Stewart and rest in peace Robert Green.

We had a school assignment and I choose to play this song in my classroom and the other kids all laughed at me because it wasn't the latest rock n roll. I`m an Ulsterman,and Andy and The New Year were synonymous even in N.Ireland. Everyone loved his cheeky chappie personality,but he was really talented too,had a quick wit,and a real warmth. I love his singing,his pride in Scotland,and,in particular,this song.

I was visiting family that had relocated back to Scotland to live with their paternal grandparents when their mother died shortly after the war, The Grandparents were the groundskeepers, woodcutters, etc etc, I never met the lord, nor any lord for that matter. I was only there for a week maybe but it was a pleasant experience that I will always cherish and remember. Some of the finest hospitality I've ever had the pleasure to experience east of the Rocky Mountains.
Many people reading this, are related to these brave men who laid down their lives , so that we could be here today. This was my grandmothers favourite song , she was a First World War widow, who single handed brought up a family of four , on a pittance of a war pension. God Bless our armed servicemen past and present [ also servicewomen].
My Dads parents were Scots. Dads father was in the Gordon Highlanders in WW1. I still have my parents copy of this wonderful 45. Dad had a great singing voice and this brings back so many memories of the parties, drinks and fun. I will always love Andy Stewart.

Back in the day, a Hungarian-Australian family moved in next to us. Dad was Hungarian - got out before 1956 and was not overly respectful of those who took advantage of the "Hungarian Revolution" to escape - and his Australian wife whom he'd met at married when (as a refugee) he ended up there. They came to Canada, where he was a teacher at the local high school I attended. One day, he was giving me a ride to school and this song was on the radio. Still remember his reaction to this; he was among alien hills as well and could not envision ever returning to Hungary. So this song isn't just for the Scots; it's for all exiles.
My dad had a 45 of this record. The back had A. Stewart doing an imitation of Elvis Presley :) I loved this record and it was one of the few times I saw my dad cry. He talked about being stranded somewhere (WWII); he was in the British Navy. I don't remember where, but he said they heard the pipes playing and knew that a Scottish regiment was coming and they would be OK.
I love this song, it reminds me of my former boss and great friend who was desperate to return to Scotland. Having fulfilled his ambition, he passed away walking amongst his beloved hills.

Memories of my dear Uncle Gavin who died 3 years ago aged 75. He was a member of the Caledonian Society Pipe Band in New Zealand for 60 years, becoming the drum major.

My Father was in Arnhem Holland. He had six brothers who were in the war. My father survived with severe leg injuries. His six brothers never came back home.
i can remember years ago when I first heard this song. I was playing with 2 little girls who were a bit younger than me. I would go to their house to play with them and their mother would play this record. Oh those good old days.

That song was part of my childhood when growing up in Northern Ireland. I can really empathise with all the positive and nostalgic comments made in response to it. I found this video because Andy Stewart and that signature song of his came to mind a few days ago. It was good to hear it again after so many years. No land has a monopoly on producing good soldiers, but Scotland has a well-earned reputation for producing some of the finest. I was told that if I kept eating Scots Porridge Oats I could become like them -- sadly, I never even came close. It takes more than porridge to produce a Jock, but I know from personal experience that 'The Scottish Soldier' and the way that Andy sings it is a tribute the Jocks very richly deserve.

His favourite song of all was The Scottish Soldier , and it became our favourite as well. He was the kind of old time teacher who explained what a song was about. A great Scottish warrior dying in a foreign land far from his native hills, with his trusty piper playing the 'piobrachh' That's how I remember it after more than fifty years and also how tears came to our eyes, as they always did, when a great warrior was laid low. We were only ten years old after all!. Andy Stewart wrote a song that will be sung forever.
This was the first song that I heard on Armed Forces Radio down South In The Republic That Once Was Vietnam. We had landed a few hours earlier. It was broadcast at 0600 hrs. After playing in a Pipe Band -- it hit me hard. I cried. There would be more tears later during my tour. GOD BLESS YOU ANDY STEWART !

My grandmothers fav song. She was a World War 1 widow as my grandfather died, of wounds in Lille hospital,France on 19th April 1918. My mother was only 20months old, when he left, to go to war. She never really knew her father, but hence the reason that I write this now.My grandmother brought up 4 children in difficult post war conditions. I just wonder what she thought when she heard this song. Forward the clock on 1 century and you will find today young military wife's in the same circumstances. My dad was driving tanks in Nth Africa against Rommel's mob when he was just 19. He signed up, if that's not a Scottish soldier then I don't what the fuck is. He came back, never talked about what he did, he was a big man, over 6 ft tall and fit, but very softly spoken. We played this song at his funeral, RIP my Scottish Soldier.

Wondeful Song... My Father was a Scottish Soldier, Served in N.Africa, Italy, and Holland with the Royal Canadian Engineers, as well as the MacPaps in Spain where he was captured, and spent two years in one of Franco's prisons.. He Died in 1966 at the age of 54

When I was a child of about 10 years old, my Mom had bought an album with this song on it. My Mom never made a big fuss about anything but she loved this song. I love this Andy Stewart song. I am not Scottish atall but love everything about Scotland, the Highlands, lovely single malt whiskies, good tenors of times past. Ah it must be something about Celtic connections because I am Irish and proud of my heritage too. And in the middle of the song he says "a piobrach sad to play"; that is Scotland a piper playing for his dead comrade. Can only imagine what it was like in the trenches of ww1 and ww2 but they sacrificed all for our freedom. Great men.

Andy Stewart was one of my favourite Scottish singers ! ....... and, RSDG's "Amazing Grace" was the first (Regimental) Pipe Band recording I ever purchased (and still have) - back in the 1980s - shortly after I learned of my own Scotttish heritage - MacKinnon of Skye on me Mum's side. Went on to be a Tenor Drummer for 15 seasons with the City of Rockford (IL) Pipe Band - 2001-2016.

A piper played Amazing Grace at my dad's funeral.
It is a beautiful song I used to listen to Andy Stewart when I was 12 in 1982.
We had a school assignment and I choose to play this song in my classroom and the other kids all laughed at me because it wasn't the latest rock n roll.
This song always touched my heart, at 17 I joined the Australian Army Corp of Engeneers.

I`m an Ulsterman,and Andy and The New Year were synonymous even in N.Ireland. Everyone loved his cheeky chappie personality,but he was really talented too,had a quick wit,and a real warmth. I love his singing,his pride in Scotland,and,in particular,this song.

It was 1970, I have no idea who he lord was, The feathered bed was located in the woodcutters cottage, the servants quarters.
I was visiting family that had relocated back to Scotland to live with their paternal grandparents when their mother died shortly after the war, The Grandparents were the groundskeepers, woodcutters, etc etc, I never met the lord, nor any lord for that matter. I was only there for a week maybe but it was a pleasant experience that I will always cherish and remember. Some of the finest hospitality I've ever had the pleasure to experience east of the Rocky Mountains.

Many people reading this, are related to these brave men who laid down their lives , so that we could be here today. This was my grandmothers favourite song , she was a First World War widow, who single handed brought up a family of four , on a pittance of a war pension.

My Dads parents were Scots. Dads father was in the Gordon Highlanders in WW1. I still have my parents copy of this wonderful 45. Dad had a great singing voice and this brings back so many memories of the parties, drinks and fun. I will always love Andy Stewart.
My Dad was in the Scots royal engineers , he was ill for a year begore he passed, but we would talk for hours and listen to many scottish songs this is high on his list of favourites. RIP Papa.😢❤

My Mum had scottish blood in her as her Father was Scottish, what a beautiful place Scotland is. What a lovely man Andy Stewart was, what a lovely voice, you are greatly missed by many, RIP Andy.

Back in the day, a Hungarian-Australian family moved in next to us. Dad was Hungarian - got out before 1956 and was not overly respectful of those who took advantage of the "Hungarian Revolution" to escape - and his Australian wife whom he'd met at married when (as a refugee) he ended up there. They came to Canada, where he was a teacher at the local high school I attended. One day, he was giving me a ride to school and this song was on the radio. Still remember his reaction to this; he was among alien hills as well and could not envision ever returning to Hungary. So this song isn't just for the Scots; it's for all exiles.
My dad had a 45 of this record. The back had A. Stewart doing an imitation of Elvis Presley :) I loved this record and it was one of the few times I saw my dad cry. He talked about being stranded somewhere (WWII); he was in the British Navy. I don't remember where, but he said they heard the pipes playing and knew that a Scottish regiment was coming and they would be OK.

Memories of my dear Uncle Gavin who died 3 years ago aged 75. He was a member of the Caledonian Society Pipe Band in New Zealand for 60 years, becoming the drum major.
This would have to be the best Scottish song ever written for Scottish troops that have lost their lives in battle & will always sure my hart as it causes me to remember my Dad who served in the Black Watch as both a soldier and as an officer! I also think it is the best song Andy Stuart ever wrote and has been adopted by many Scottish Regiments! I know that when my time comes this song will be played for me!

i can remember years ago when I first heard this song. I was playing with 2 little girls who were a bit younger than me. I would go to their house to play with them and their mother would play this record. Oh those good old days.

That song was part of my childhood when growing up in Northern Ireland. I can really empathise with all the positive and nostalgic comments made in response to it. I found this video because Andy Stewart and that signature song of his came to mind a few days ago. It was good to hear it again after so many years. No land has a monopoly on producing good soldiers, but Scotland has a well-earned reputation for producing some of the finest. I was told that if I kept eating Scots Porridge Oats I could become like them -- sadly, I never even came close. It takes more than porridge to produce a Jock, but I know from personal experience that 'The Scottish Soldier' and the way that Andy sings it is a tribute the Jocks very richly deserve.
How extraordinary that this song was so very popular in the hit parade. Takes me back to childhood in ‘50s or 60s! It played in my mind when I was in a coma last year.
When we were schoolkids in Ireland our old teacher thought us all the great Irish rebel songs about their battles with the English and the heroic warriors who died while fighting against impossible odds trying to free their county. His favourite song of all was The Scottish Soldier , and it became our favourite as well. He was the kind of old time teacher who explained what a song was about. A great Scottish warrior dying in a foreign land far from his native hills, with his trusty piper playing the 'piobrachh' That's how I remember it after more than fifty years and also how tears came to our eyes, as they always did, when a great warrior was laid low. We were only ten years old after all!. Andy Stewart wrote a song that will be sung forever.
This was the first song that I heard on Armed Forces Radio down South In The Republic That Once Was Vietnam. We had landed a few hours earlier. It was broadcast at 0600 hrs. After playing in a Pipe Band -- it hit me hard. I cried. There would be more tears later during my tour. GOD BLESS YOU ANDY STEWART !

Grew up outside boston ma heard this version at all scottish games or picnics, the yearly remembrance service at cathederal of the pines NH and of course on the pipes at funerals bring tears and thanks for my family who have gone home.

My grandmothers fav song. She was a World War 1 widow as my grandfather died, of wounds in Lille hospital,France on 19th April 1918. My mother was only 20months old, when he left, to go to war. She never really knew her father, but hence the reason that I write this now.My grandmother brought up 4 children in difficult post war conditions. I just wonder what she thought when she heard this song. Forward the clock on 1 century and you will find today young military wife's in the same circumstances. God Bless them and all; our soldiers, sailors and airforce personel.

My dad was driving tanks in Nth Africa against Rommel's mob when he was just 19. He signed up, if that's not a Scottish soldier then I don't what the fuck is. He came back, never talked about what he did, he was a big man, over 6 ft tall and fit, but very softly spoken. We played this song at his funeral, RIP my Scottish Soldier.

Wondeful Song... My Father was a Scottish Soldier, Served in N.Africa, Italy, and Holland with the Royal Canadian Engineers, as well as the MacPaps in Spain where he was captured, and spent two years in one of Franco's prisons.. He Died in 1966 at the age of 54

My Dad was in the Van Doos in Holland
love this it was my dads favourite. He served many years defending his country. We used it at his funeral and as it played we tried very hard to keep it all together but his 2 loving daughters my sister and myself couldnt help but cry but we play this often and now instead of bringing tears it brings pride yhankyou andy for giving this song the words mean so much ... proud to be scottish ...so very proud

You must be thinking of somebody else ?!! Andy had no connection with the ' Kingdom ' ?!! He was born in Glasgow, moved to Perth when he was 5 and then to Arbroath when he was 11 !!! In the early days he did a lot of his appearances at The Webster Hall in Arbroath and The Caird Hall in Dundee as a semi-pro !!!

I love this Andy Stewart song. I am not Scottish atall but love everything about Scotland, the Highlands, lovely single malt whiskies, good tenors of times past. Ah it must be something about Celtic connections because I am Irish and proud of my heritage too. And in the middle of the song he says "a piobrach sad to play"; that is Scotland a piper playing for his dead comrade. Can only imagine what it was like in the trenches of ww1 and ww2 but they sacrificed all for our freedom. Great men.

This song has always made me cry even when I was a little girl..I am a german/dutch background who lives in Australia but I had a best friend who is scottish and her dad use to play the pipes and he was good except when he got angry with us then it was painful (we reckon he did it on purpose) Love the pipes they are hauntingly beautiful..Andy Stewart looks like my mum's next door neighbour towards the end of this song.The end of this song is so heartbreaking makes you cry all the time..

Andy Stewart was one of my favourite Scottish singers ! ....... and, RSDG's "Amazing Grace" was the first (Regimental) Pipe Band recording I ever purchased (and still have) - back in the 1980s - shortly after I learned of my own Scotttish heritage - MacKinnon of Skye on me Mum's side. Went on to be a Tenor Drummer for 15 seasons with the City of Rockford (IL) Pipe Band - 2001-2016.
