    Lex Luger only being WCW Champion for less than a week was a real bummer. He was clearly super over and I think it would of been a good story line to have the nWo desperately try to take the title back. Maybe let Lex hold it for a month or two before Hogan takes it back and goes back to the Sting storyline. Lex just deserved better.

    • @iDeathMaximuMII
      @iDeathMaximuMII 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Yeah, if they really wanted to pop that rating for Nitro, okay go ahead. But I feel like Luger should've at least gotten to hold it till September at a Nitro or at the Fall Brawl PPV
      Like you said, the nWo getting obsessed with getting that title back for a whole month would've been good TV to see their desperation

    Say what you will, Sean Waltman was a hell of a talent for his size back then! I know many agree, but that kid was a great bump taker and could really move around fast as lightning as well as grapple! He deserves a lot more credit than he gets from critics in my opinion. Ric was pissed for the potato at first, but Ric is a pro and took control of his anger quickly knowing it was not done purposely and he gave Sean his receipt for it, but without injuring Sean. Two great talents in one match - worth every dollar spent to watch on any PPV with those two with Sean forcing Ric to change his style and damn did he do great for a veteran of his caliper!
    The last match with Hogan and Lugar should have ended with Hogan cheating with his dirty tricks, but exclude the NWO members. Hogan could have ended the match with Lugar dodging an illegal move, or a foreign object and done a roll up, but this was the downfall of the NWO always crowding the ring at the end and WCW watered it down that way. Sure, do it during the week, but for cripes sake, not a PPV event. Lugar should have been given the run for another month at least just to test the water with him while still building the NWO up during this time. A failed opportunity that could have been good for business.

    These Road Wild shows were always rough to watch. Hogan seemed to always go over, despite not needing to at all this year, as it totally derailed all of Luger's momentum, and a South Dakota biker crowd that was never into it completely sucked the life out of the show.

      @@wrayday7149 yeah, the future is near the end. Hogan refusing to drop the title cleanly to Sting and this, yeah by the end of the year, WCW had lost all momentum and a big part of the reason was the way the nwo kept winning all the time when it mattered most. You may have been already told this but there is more to the Hogan/Luger story. Turns out Kevin Nash in the late Scott Hall had actually been campaigning for Lugar to win the title because he was so red hot at the time. The only reason the title match happened besides popping a rating was because of that. The original plan was for Lex Luger to go to roll while and challenge hope for the title and lose straight up!

    • @martynodonnell8467
      @martynodonnell8467 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      One of the main issues with WCW during this time. Is that, for a huge part, all the NWO really was, was a way for Hogan to stay on top. However now as a heel. Fans were sick to death of red and yellow babyface Hogan on top. The novelty of Hogan on top as a heel got stale very quickly, certainly by the end of 96. The NWO and Hogan only really had a few good months, where it felt different and interesting. Where as wrestlers fans cared about, such as Luger were held back. Due to Hogans ego. No one was getting pushed and no one could get over properly. Due to Hogan monopolising the top spot. If you look at the stars WWF were making at this time and going forward and compare that to WCW. Ultimately this is what led to many of WCWs stars jumping ship later on.

    • @shady3legend

      To me the nwo was best in 96 when it first formed to maybe mid 97 after that I got tired of seeing them always on top, nobody going over, definitely too many people joining, even when they had spilt up to make the Wolfpack I knew it was only a matter of time before they joined back to put hogan on top...no wonder other wrestlers started to leave and great decision they made..

      @smac919 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The crazy thing is how obvious it was, it was all right there. Sting, DDP and The Giant should have never joined the NWO, and feuds of Sting / Hogan, DDP / Hall, and The Giant / Nash should have been at the forefront. They had the NWO for years, they easily could have done all 3 of those feuds in a long form. Would have had to probably transition to DDP vs Macho Man anyway with Scotts addiction getting the better of him.

      @@JM1993951 There are plenty of dope moments in the late 90s era of WCW.. but people definitely do have rose tinted glasses on with WCW & WWF. Tons of stories that went nowhere, continued wayyy longer than they should have, or just made no sense.
      Todays wrestling is definitely better. Only some fans see it, but we are lowkey in a new golden era of wrestling with AEW, a revived ROH, NJPW, NJPW Strong, Impact, PWG, DEFY etc.
      Hopefully those promotions will continue to make WWE improve.. they have somewhat at least with pushing guys like Kevin and Ciampa. I think after Kevin & Ciampa accomplish whatever goals they have in WWE, they will have their last runs in AEW.

    This event should’ve been better. WCW had everything going for it, and it feels like a huge wasted opportunity event. Hogan should’ve let Luger run with the belt longer. But my takeaway from this is after Davey Boy’s relapse, everyone’s doing chinlocks. It’s like Davey’s relapse triggered something in the wrestler’s brains to do chinlocks. You may think they’re cool to do, but they are not.

    The emotional pain on Alex Wrights face when he was unable to complete his iconic Victory Dance evoked heavy shades of Austin grimacing when trying to raise the IC belt after Owen broke his neck… wish him well in his long road to recovery 🙏

    To be honest, the title swap surprised me when it occurred. they were doing a massive build up to the inevitable Sting v Hogan match at Starrcade, and the title switches in this week were a risk to me. Kinda forgotten in the long term, so yeah, possibly just a ratings pop. But was a massive nothing burger.

      I think it was pretty good, nwo even when they lose the belt are inevitable, wcw get a taste but that's all they get. It would have worked out brilliantly, if they just eventually had nwo actually lose out.

    RE: Hogan vs. Lugar: “This hasn’t been good so far…”
    Bite your tongue! Less an a minute later, you state (and show!) Hogan hitting an invented atomic drop. That’s (for Hogan) Olympic level wrestling. He learned an actual move, versus just twisting arms and falling on his ass (the leg drop). He’s move over Shamrock; Hulk’s in town!
    And about the ending, why even pretend that Sting could turn things around? We all know how that turns out.

    As you said it was all but guaranteed that the title would go back to Hogan. The fans probably felt it to so there was no reason to get emotionally invested in the road wild main event. Maybe the big wigs at Turner were at the 100th Nitro episode 5 days later. So therefore Hogan probably volunteered to drop the title to Luger so he can claim he was responsible for the high rating
