    This show was actually the foresight to so many things, Austin throwing the IC title off a bridge but then a year later Rock throwing Austin of a bridge, the casket match that cost Shawn Michaels 5 years of his career, the final DX roster almost coming together, Rock starting to take over the Nation. In hindsight seeing so many little things now that played such huge parts in the WWF later in the year that shaped the Attitude Era.
    But also seeing so many things that would eventually signal the end of WCW, starting with their horrible booking, Eric trying over and over to make the NWO its own brand and not just a faction, the none sense that was the Bret Hart run literally from day 1, many like to say 1999 was when WCW really went downhill, but no back in 1997 it was already starting to and you can begin to see the cracks starting to form, it was obvious that by this point the NWO was starting to become more of a hindrance to the company than an advantage.

    • @tomneff7102
      @tomneff7102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Bingo. In many ways, WCW struck gold with the NWO storyline.
      That said, it could be argued that the faction had run its course leading into Sting v. Hogan.
      A clean Sting win would have at worst mitigated the damage of overexposure the NWO, because that woulda made them the ones pursuing the title, which naturally would have led to the NWO breaking up.
      Instead, we got what we did, and that one match, Sting Hogan at Starcade 97, in my honest opinion was the true point of no return for WCW.
      That's not saying they didn't produce great matches or stories after, (They clearly did) but any chance they had to win the war died that night.

      @@arciks11 I never said it wasn't getting stale, that's why a clean Sting win would have made the most sense!
      Sting as the WCW champion and leader, and the NWO fighting from within on who gets the opportunity to take it back from the Stinger, leading to the end of the faction, was the logical way to go.
      Unfortunately, egos got in the way of logic.

      @ernieb352 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomneff7102 The problem wasn't the matches, it was the booking and storylines, when they finally realized the NWO was at its limit with having 90% of the roster as members instead of disbanding it they just made a new NWO, then it became a 100% NWO roster with 2 brands and WCW became the jobber roster. They killed WCW by forcing the NWO to take over only to then kill the NWO because it took over.

WCW still wanted to have him at the biggest show of the year, so having him as a ref was a smart way of getting around the no-compete. What were WCW supposed to do, send Bret out to wrestle and just let him be sued by McMahon for violating the no-compete? These videos are simply put fantastic. They are more entertaining than any content being put out by WWE atm. Your commentary is spot on while also being informative & humorous. The music straight from my favourite N64 WCW / WWF games dials up the nostalgia and as someone who grew up during the Monday night wars these videos bring me the same joy in my late 30's as watching the wars back in the day. Awesome

    I remember this. At the time I was a huge Bret fan (he still is the best that ever will be) and I was shocked at how where I was expecting Bret to have a huge, pyrofest entrance w/music and attire on par with what the Hitman was just weeks earlier and you get this. Streetwear Bret acting as a ref where he should have had a shot at any top head of his choice. Being 19 at the time, all that registered was the shock, I didn't have any insight on the business but at that moment I figured something was definitely wrong.

      Then you learn that Bret was still under a legal no-compete clause with the WWF that prevented him from wrestling with another company for 90 days after leaving. WCW politics had absolutely nothing to do with how Bret debuted or why it took so long for him to wrestle.

      I think about this all the time.
      It worked out well in the end for everyone. HBK got his life together and matured, hed probably be dead now if he never hurt his back in 98. His leaving made room for Austin and the Rock to become megastars, Mick Foley to an extent as well.
      Give HHH his run up to main event.

      Bret was made a ref at Starcade because he was still under a legal no-compete clause with the WWF that prevented him from wrestling for 90 days after leaving. WCW still wanted to have him at the biggest show of the year, so having him as a ref was a smart way of getting around the no-compete. WCW did they right thing here - the only thing they could reasonably do - but the myth is that they somehow stuffed up by not letting Bret wrestle straight away.

    I think the biggest difference between RAW and Nitro right now (and going forward, to be honest), is that something new and different is the focus of RAW almost every week while Nitro is still the nWo show. DX has a few segments, but it doesn't feel like they are an overbearing presence on the show and are actually doing things with other talent (like with the Outlaws this week, which is great foreshadowing).
