The “self high five” theme was awesome. It really fit ddp’s working man persona that so many could identify with. To me, he was the real “people’s champion”. Those were definitely the good old days of wrestling.
Man Randy really could work so well as a face or heel. Definitely the best performer of his generation. Blows Hogan out of the water in every aspect of the business.
William Regal is a master class study on slow, steady, even-keeled wrestling. Regal is a such a great heel. No fuss, no muss, nothing crazy - just good old-fashioned wrestling.
1997 is my favorite year in wrestling PERIOD. WCW was at its peak with the NWO and Hollywood Hogan vs Sting storyline during the entire year, as well as the international talent from Japan, Mexico, Canada, England, Germany, etc. Over in the WWF, they might have been getting their ass kicked by WCW thruout the year in the ratings but in ny opinion, 97 is the most unpredictable year in the WWF’s history. We got the rise of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin as a face superstar, Bret Hart’s heel turn with the Canada vs USA angle, and overall, the seeds for the Attitude Era were being planted (Monday Night Raw transformed to the two-hour Raw Is War). Over in ECW, one of their most successful years as they finally joined “the big two” in the pay-per-view arena.
I love the clip where DDP talks about Randy deciding to put him over, I think it was from the Monday Night Wars documentary but he said Macho was sitting down lacing up his boots and DDP asked him about the finish, and Macho was like "I think I'm gonna take the Diamond Cutter t'night". Can you imagine being DDP in that moment and the joy that he experienced? He wasn't a nobody, but he wasn't an established superstar at that time, but DDP became one of the marquee guys in 1998 onward
That ddp match with savage put him on the map and he became a big time player in wcw. As for the match I enjoyed it alot and kudos to Randy Savage for wanting to put over ddp at spring stampede 1997.
Another awesome upload from the greatest wrestling channel on the planet. A great PPV and a very stacked card. The main event was decent too. An unintentional moment during the event, which doesn’t seem to get spoken about. Was when Savage attacked DDP. During DDPs interview with Mean Gene. Mean Gene stood there giving a running commentary, pretty much no selling it, talking about how out of order Savage was and saying how someone should do something. While he was stood right next to them. Talking calmly into his microphone.
I was wondering how you were gonna handle the Booker T "Hulk Hogan we comin' for YOU!" promo. Embarrassing but Legendary. We wouldn't have it any other way. I felt for Booker on that one. He was fired up, cutting the promo of his life, and just had a slight lapse there at the end. You could tell by the usage and context that it's essentially the equivalent of Hulk Hogan saying Brother, still sucks, tho. Equal parts unfortunate and hilarious. Booker`s reaction was good, but Sherri was the best part. She just smiled.
