  • Human remains are believed to have been found in wreckage of the Titan submersible, the US Coast Guard has announced.
    Pieces of the sub, which imploded while on a deep dive to the Titanic, have been recovered from the seabed.
    Coast Guard officials say the wreckage includes the sub's landing frame and a rear cover .
    US medical professionals are to conduct a formal analysis of what is believed to be human remains.
    All five people on board the vessel died on 18 June after it imploded about 90 minutes into a dive to view the 1912 shipwreck, which lies at a depth of 3,800m in the north Atlantic.
    Those on board were 61-year-old Stockton Rush; British explorer Hamish Harding, 58; Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son, Suleman Dawood, 19; and French diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet who was 77.

      ROVs are much better than manned vehicles in any such job. Since even the man inside the submersible relies on a small window view, robotic arms, etc, to interact with the outside. There is really no point to send people down there.

    Nothing went tragically wrong, everything went exactly how health authorities warned the CEO they would go. He built his submerine out of parts from a camping shop, bought a blue tooth console controller off amazon to man the sub, the windows couldnt handle the pressure he wanted them to go to and he had been warned countless times that his submerine was too dangerous to be manned. If you ask me, this is iust another group of stupid billionares who got what was coming for them.
    The ONLY victim my heart genuinely aches for was the son. He had only come and agreed to go on the sub to support his father on fathers day. He was actually terrified of the sub and did not want to go on it, but did it for his dad and the both of them ended up dying before the sub even got close to the titanic, especially since the sub lost contact within the first hour or 2, the whole expedition was 7hours+.

Nothing clearly recognisable as parts of a human, just organic matter from something that was once alive and thus presumed human given the circumstances.

    I have a background in engineering from my time during after school woodshop classes so i'm somewhat of an expert in these kind of endeavours. With respect to Professor Thorton here, I actually think the key part we need to begin examining is the binding of the paper mache used to construct the hull and see if enough PVA glue had been applied (a tricky ratio to get right in paper mache). Assuming those conform to Blue Peter standards, we can then move on to the parts bound by parcel tape.

      Even the wee window they used wasn't rated to that depth, nevermind a carbon fiber cylinder (not a sphere- a cylinder, and one that ostensibly used a poor weave pattern at that) rated at most for a few thousand feet- not a titanic depth as they were pushing. You'd think that the crew would be in a small spherical mass of homogeneous steel with a thick plexiglass viewing port, not a cylinder made of a material with such an unfavourable and unpredictable mode of failure. Trieste had better sense of material and engineering, and that was done many decades ago.

    A plastic structure like a bike frame or a car chassis reinforced by carbon fibre is massively strong in tension, same as concrete with steel reinforcement bars inside, as long as engineers have worked out how to transfer the stresses into it evenly. But in compression it's only as strong as the plastic resin that holds the fibres in place.
    Edit: my carbon bike frame is a perfect two-triangle structure with lovely smooth junctions to carry the stresses and carbon fibre to give tensile strength. In tests carbon frames have been found much stronger than alloy frames. But I know my frame tubes are terribly vulnerable to point impacts and crushing, much more so than a steel or aluminium tube and once the resin has cracked the tube will crush like a toilet roll holder.

    • @mygunisinnocent8028
      @mygunisinnocent8028 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true, the sub builders want both compressive and tensile strength in their material. Since they're both related, even though one is pushing and the other pulling, they tend to look for high tensile strength to build subs. I think on all the new nuclear subs they build the hulls out of HY-80 high tensile steel that has nickel, molybdenum and chromium in it.

    • @tommasopasserindentreves9345
      @tommasopasserindentreves9345 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mygunisinnocent8028 In this case (practically a bottle with pressure outside instead of inside), there is no tensile strength at all in the fibers. I agree that when you flex a piece of carbon fiber reinforced resin, half of it is pulled and the other half is pushed to make it simple, but the overall strength is brought by the pulled fibers. In this case, I only see the material being pushed. It's so basic I am sure I am missing something, but 10 days after discovering this submersible design I still can't figure the base principle holding it together...

    • @dickdyke-kp7xj
      @dickdyke-kp7xj ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @tommasopasserindentreves9345
      Well, the outward push you're thinking off would be done by the air inside the sub. As we learned in physics, a bottle full of air won't be crushed anywhere near as shallow a depth as a bottle without air.
      The material doesn't really matter, as long as it is thick enough, it's the bonding of the materials.
      Since I don't work with the materials used here, I'm not sure how they're fitted together, but tension is not the factor to consider. The equilibrium of pressure on both the inside and outside is what needs to be maintained. My guess is there was a bad weld/fitting that failed.

      @@dickdyke-kp7xj That's true regarding the air-filled bottle, the air inside compensates, but here there is a 350:1 pressure difference between the outside and the inside, and air is compressible. You would want to fill it with an incompressible fluid to balance the loads. While I agree that any material has to be thick enough, most are just slightly better when pulled than when pushed, but carbon fiber (rather any fiber) is just not good at all when pushed, like pushing a wire vs. pulling it... I really don't see the point of the fibers here. When reinforcing concrete, the steel bars do have some kind of compressive strength, but fibers just don't. They would only be there waiting for bending and therefore delamination... I still don't get it 🤔

    Actually, what would have happened is that the Carbon Fibre cylindrical vessel which was made from straight strands of fibre instead of a weave would have cracked in a circle on the inner wall due to the tensional stresses applied on the outside in the centre of the cylinder by the water pressure. The crack occurred because there was no strength in the length direction of the vessel as the fibres were straight so the only strength was in the resin which has little tensional strength, so the resin split away from the fibres, the water then came in and blew the ends and the window off the sub from the inside , taking everything with it. • @mygunisinnocent8028
    @mygunisinnocent8028 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I agree with the guy in the video. That window and the joint where the end caps met the CF are the two things I'd be looking closely at. He only had a 2 inch deep dado machined into the titanium where the CF tube was glued into. Not much of a gluing surface. He should have had at least a 12 inch deep slot for the carbon fiber to fit into, which would have given him 6 times more gluing surface. This also would have allowed him to drill holes away from the edge and put bolts through the titanium CF titanium sandwich. Drilling holes weakens CF, but it would have been sandwiched between titanium on both sides. The epoxy resin glue holding the end caps on has a tensile strength of 5 to 6000 psi, but the pressure at the Titanic is 6000 psi. Epoxy resin glue is the same stuff you can buy in the hardware store under the brand name JB weld. Nothing against the glue, because I've used it, but I can't believe he would trust his life to JB weld. They make a new epoxy glue that is 7000 psi, but using it on that joint would still be sketchy and almost maxing it out. It's just speculation and we may never know, but I think he probably sprung a leak at one of those end cap joints or through a crack in the window or even the window seal. We know from the last message that there wasn't a sudden implosion from the CF collapsing in a millisecond and turning them into powder from heat as hot as a thousand suns or whatever some are saying. In his last message sent to the surface, he said the thing had been compromised and he was resurfacing, then 2 minutes later navy sensors detected an explosion. To me, compromised means he sprung a leak. It could have started as a pinhole leak that was spraying high pressure water into the sealed cabin, and since the pressure had nowhere to go in the sealed cabin, it would have aired it up like a balloon until it exploded.
