I personally love the black with red, like I said my gf just started making lampshades and she looks for material everywhere. She just ordered some lampshades from Mary maxwell!
OMG, i am so surprised this doesn't have more views! most other videos on victorian lampshade making seemed to come from people who already had a background in making them. it's easy as hell to get psyched out of making more intensive projects like this, especially when your only point of reference is from someone who makes it look so effortless. it's nice to have an informative video about the process from someone who is also learning! thank you so much, your end products are so beautiful!!!
Absolutely glorious! You should be incredibly proud of your work. I’ve got a 1920s bridge lamp that needs its shade covered. Your video is genuinely more informative than the folks who gloss over the tricky parts. Thank you for that. 🦇 ❤️🦇❤️🦇
thank you for this video! those are very ambitious (?) shades to start with. i love the way you described what you did and why -- the reason for the design elements. it is often difficult to capture the result of a lighting project - they so often look different in person vs in still images or video. it is my impression that "darkness" in the result is intentional. these are not for reading lights, they are to provide light necessary to highlight their own features and create a dark but navigable space - where the shades themselves seem to consume the light. ❤
Thank you so much for your comment 🖤 Yes absolutely, they defiantly lean more towards being decor or art rather than the most functional of light sources
Thanks for all this info. I want to make a lamp for myself and what you've provided here is super helpful and much appreciated. Well done on the lamps - the black and red one is especially beautiful with that bead trim!
Thankyou for a great video. I'm designing a parlour for the basement and I have been thinking victorian now with your lamp idea shades it's decided. I have a couple bronze statues for the base. I was thinking stained glass shades but yours look much more fitting. Now I will build the wire frames to fit. I'd like to see the room you put the shade in.
That all sounds so amazing, best of luck with your project! I have a video here of what I did with the rest of the room. I mention the lampshade about two-thirds of the way through th-cam.com/video/MEyvKx6dP-Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_pGrFUzaTIbU-W4T
I love this vid. Your personality really comes through and I can totally relate to you. I'm a novice at this too. Walked in to Joann's yesterday and was completely overwhelmed. Got my frames from Mary Max too. She is so helpful! I'd love to see how your shades turned out with the light on! Good Work!
Beautiful! I’m doing lots of research about this craft before I attempt one myself. The only thing you could have done to make your life a lot easier (according to what I’ve found online) is to cut your fabric on the bias. Then you can pull and tug your fabric and create like a taught drum effect over the sections. Bias creates stretch so you’ll not need to wrestle with the fabric to make it lay ‘flat’. I hope this is helpful to anyone reading!! P.S I am Living for the red one ❤
Ahh that feels so obvious now that you say it, I got it pretty tight but there was some streaking in the fabric, cutting on the bias would have definitely solved that. Thank you for your comment 🖤
Thank you so much 🖤 Yes! Affordable Fabrics in Rocky Hill, they also have a store in Uncasville never been but they said it's a bit smaller. They change their inventory pretty regularly every time I come down there's new stuff.
I actually had ordered and already was working on my lampshades before she posted anything 😂 but I absolutely love her. I was very inspired by Mary Maxwell and others who have been preserving this art form for several decades from the Victorian era I left her info in the description as she's an amazing resource
These are Beautiful! Just took a peek at your other videos. Why haven’t you got more followers 🤷♀️ It’ll come. Looking forward to what you have in store 😊
This is such a stunning art form that is rarely seen today. Bravo to you for keeping it alive! You are a true artiste!! I just adore everything you did on both shades but if I had to choose, the second is more my personal style but both are gorgeous!! I've been inching my way to this stunning art form by first experimenting on existing shades in my home just to practice and they do look better but I am aching to give this a try finally! Your video was very inspiring!! I've got an idea that involves plumage!
I can’t figure out the pleating on a lamp. Granted I just picked up a needle 2 days ago (seriously) but man I don’t know if it is in the measurement, how taught you draw it or what. If you double the width do I also double the height? Help me please!
It honestly took me a few tries. I didn't double the height just made sure I had a good "seam allowance" as I did with all the other pieces. It's a lot in the pulling the top fabric taught it starts to naturally create these pleats and then you can go in and pin and adjust the pleats before sewing🖤
I got mine from Mary Maxwell I linked it in the description I think she has 160 different options and styles. Typically they are welded and shipped to you. I have heard that some people can also find some vintage ones on eBay, etsy or FB marketplace if you do a bit of digging 🖤
I'm not sure how much overseas shipping would be from the place I bought mine from (link in the description) but you can search for a German lampshade frame company. Here in the states, they operate via a catalog that you can look through and then call in an order. I would also check eBay or Facebook Marketplace or anything similar. You might have to do some searching but people sell frames there (or old vintage lamps) that you can use!
beautiful!! i love your lampshades, they're gorgeous. i want to make one myself too! question, when you sew the fabric to the frame, do you go around the frame wire with your needle or just through the fabric tape at the top? thanks!
The lampshade did not seem to be lit up at the end of the video. Also, everything is so dark, it's hard to see what you're doing. From what I can see it all looks good but I wish I could see more!
Thank you for watching 🖤 Which lampshade did you like most?
I personally love the black with red, like I said my gf just started making lampshades and she looks for material everywhere. She just ordered some lampshades from Mary maxwell!
Green is my favorite color, but both of them are so beautiful and ornate
Love your video. Where did you get your trim and other supplies? Your shades are beautiful!
Blues are usually my colors, but I'm really feeling the black and red ♥️
A blue lampshade would be lovely 🖤

Did you have to use any heat resistant fabrics?
I didn't but you certainly can!

where do u find more special shapes of lampshades, or how do u make them by urself, like the raw metal thingy haha?
