How can I make the overlapping pattern using only 1 single character?

If working on paper I would sketch the character out roughly, cut the sections and re-arrange before refining the outer edges of the character - is your character going to overlap with itself? Some time after I made these videos Photoshop actually added some repeat pattern support, which could also help if you have access to it.
