Ooh la la... Maybe Nature herself didn't know how miraculous her creatures are! By the way, should some day you turn a ruffled root having an end of log into A MERMAID with her long tangle hair? I'm eager waiting for that Master Piece. Nice day.
Did you ever use some of the pieces of wood you had left from this one? They look like nice size pieces. I love the way this vase looks. It's very very beautiful.
I have, I tend to make small lidded boxes with the of cuts of wood like this, For box making it’s best to start with fully dry wood as you don’t want any movement in the wood after it’s been turned. So these pieces are currently in my wood drying kiln. They will be boxes or inlays in the next few months.. I may even make a video of one 🤞🏻🙂
I really loved this birch burl. The pink tone to some of the grain was simply gorgeous! Is this common to all birch, or just the burl. It was a lovely piece!
Hey malcom, I completely agree, it’s always a battle of ideas. What you don’t see in my videos is the time spent staring at a piece scratching my head and wondering what to make of it. What I would say is to remember that no matter what you start with 90% of the blank will end up as shavings, the key is to capture the beauty of the piece regardless of weather your starting with burl or straight grained wood. The best way to improve is to just get stuck in. That being said I have a whole shelf full of burl that I still don’t feel ready to turn. The offcuts from this piece are in the kiln, drying, and will be used for a resin project soon.
I’ve got a big chunk of burl the guy I bought my lathe from gave me, way to big for my current lathe. I was going to cut it down but this piece makes me think I should wait till I can afford a bigger lathe and make the most of it 🤔

I’m never sure how to cut the log to get the most out of a burr to avoid wasting it. Nice one! Hope you managed to use all the offcuts...
