  • welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
    Woodturning - Spalted Elm Burl
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large Spalted Elm Burl into a spiral topped vase.
when woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you hitting the thumbs-up button and if you'd like to see more from me you can simply click the subscribe button or bell icon.

My favourite moment in any woodturning video is, the first time the oil touches the wood and the beauty underneath is brought to life!

Cheers Randy, I must say it’s not my favourite piece, I was very limited by the punky’ness of the wood, a little too much spalting.
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it

@@JackMackWoodturning I hear what you are saying. You look at the end result and think you could do more with a better piece of wood.
I look at it and think what about the amazing creation you made from that punky wood.

There was a big old crack down from the rim, which is why I couldn’t make the walls any thinner. That piece of wood was too far gone with spalting.
So it was glue the crack or cut it out. Any excuse to try something new 😊
      Thanks for watching Jeff 👍🏻👍🏻

For a timber that stinks so much sure looks nice. In my timber falling days, I never got used to the smell of Elm wood, doubtful there are any English Elm's still standing after the Dutch Elm disease devested them.

We still have the odd tree knocking about up here in the north. Plenty Wych elm still.

Cheers Bryan, it’s not my favourite piece ever, the wood was a little too far gone with spalting which meant I had to leave the wall way thicker than I would normally.. but there’s no denying the beauty of a spalted elm burl 😊

American Elm smells quite strongly when its being worked on, does it smell like poo in the UK as well? I love Elm by the way, its got so much character, and it doesn't get enough love over here since it has such troublesome interlaced grain.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi William, this piece actually didn’t smell at all, I think it’s because it was so old and dry. Iv turned green English elm and it has got a less than desirable smell.
I like elm, but I must say I think it’s somewhat over rated by most turners, I’d rather turn sycamore or beech anyday. I guess like anything be it good or bad if it’s rare people want it.
      Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
