I like how this game didn't feel the need to strictly follow the movie, but instead put Robin Hood on various adventures. The part where Robin Hood stops a wedding of a young lass to a corrupt baron is most likely taken from Howard Pyle Robin Hood novel.
I'm so glad I found this class. My older brother bought this game when it first came out. It took tireless nights and lots of game overs to finally beat this game as a kid. And even though it doesn't follow the movie the whole time its still a good game. Hard but good :). This, Mario 3, and Mega Man 3 were my favorite NES games. In fact Mega Man 3 was my first ever game I personally owned. My brother bought it for me for my birthday one year :D
I remember renting this from Blockbuster multiple times when I was a kid. I did beat it but the hardest part for me was the escape on horseback between Maid Marian's place and Sherwood forest.
Another fine video. I rented this game a few times back in the day. Beat it the first rental but continued to rent it a few times because I liked it. I haven't seen anything of this game since the early '90s so I'd forgotten a lot of this. I remember thinking the pictures of the characters looked so good. Not so much now.
Heh agreed on the character animations by today's standards, but yes this is a bit of an underrated gem, lots of surprisingly quality content in this one.
Aside from the lack of passwords and save files, this is a great game. Nowadays, I have no problem with using save-states between each level. I even liked the Nintendo Power issue of this game. Great review, btw... I like the cut of your jib.
Actually, you do get two continues, so it’s not one and done. Oh, and that door in Dubois manor near the beginning can be unlocked with a key you can find in that room. I believe you need to search around the green rug in that room. As for the weapons master, it is actually possible to not have the gold to pay him if you jump straight to his section of the game. If this happens, he tells you the price at the end of the fight, but remains at his house until you take money from enough guards to pay the weapons master. To prevent this, I recommend jumping to the tax wagon stage instead, as the money you get from that is enough by itself to pay the weapons master. Another couple of tips I have: the Locksley bow looks just like the long bow, as you said, but unlike the long bow, it somehow can be used one handed, so you can equip a melee weapon, like a sword, and the Locksley bow at the same time. Also, when you have to get the healing water, I recommend filling the flask and drinking from it, as it’s almost like a yellow and red potion put together - the red potion’s speed and the yellow potion’s health recovery. You can keep drinking the water to fully recover without using any other items, and keep refilling the flask until you are ready to move on, and better yet, there is another flask nearby that you can fill with healing water also, and you can hold onto them until needed! They come in very handy when you do need them!
i loved this game. I had a thing for robin hood as a kid; watched the disney cartoon a million times when I was really young, then this Robin Hood movie was my favorite movie for years, I think until Braveheart came out and replaced it. I played this game a ton, and I think I remember beating it back in the day. The memory's kinda fuzzy, but this vid is a big hit of nostalgia!
Glad to hear it! And yeah this game was surprisingly good. Normally adaptations are pretty weak on the NES/systems in general, but they brought it with this one.
Yeah it's still crazy to me that a 6th entry to any game series could have come out in 1990, but I guess Mega Man 6's release date wasn't too far later.
I recently watched another player level up at the wild hog cave. Using the staff, he/she defeated the hog, as it was blowing up, exit cave. Re-enter, as if by magic, hog is alove again. Repeat until level up then stay in cave and search etc. Also, i recall way back that after the fight by the gallows, if standing in a certain spot after the battle completes, it is possible to get suck in a bush inadvertently and ultimately having to reset. Very annoying bug! I wonder if anyone else experienced that one?
Yeah I've been knocked back into the cave to miraculously find the hog alive again. And yeah if you get in that sweet spot, that's a good point in that it's a great way to level up fast.
I am profoundly confused at the armor details and explanations @ 22:40. Statements like how the chain armor can "get you into Marian's pad" -yet that's the location where you obtain it, and how the sidebar states that the Loxley amulet js obtained at Marian's, when you clearly just got it a few minutes earlier from Duncan upon entering the ruins of Loxley Manor keep? You'll find if you compare your gameplay footage with the information being recited, almost all of it conflicts, there are even in-game values for the armor types displayed in the Player menu on the right side.
I'm sorry for the confusion, GC. As Blaze mentions, the CHAIN/medallion itself (not the armor) gets you into Marian's, and yes you get THAT from Duncan like you mentioned. You need to wear that early on in the game to get into Marian's. The Chain Armor is indeed in Marian's place, but again that's independent of the chain/medallion itself. With that explained I'm not sure there's any conflicts - as you mentioned the game displays armor values, but they tend to vary slightly depending on the character and other factors like player's level. That's why rather than giving specific numbers which aren't all that necessary anyway, we just rank them in terms of level and say the higher required level armors provide better protection, so probably keep the best armor on Robin since he's the only one who really matters if he lives or dies in this game.
"Ten" month journey?? I have the movie on DVD, and don't even ask me - Not that I can remember anyway - how many times I watched it on VHS as a child, but after the scene the Sheriff of Nottingham attacked Locksley Castle, it said _Four_ months later.
Dude, you walked passed right by the crossbow! You can have the Locksley sword in one hand & the crossbow in the other! It makes you almost untouchable! You need to be better organized in your inventory & prepare your characters better!
Word round town is Prof Brigands is the prince of thieves cuz he Robbin all the views from other channels cuz his content is so much better than theirs!!!!

Good call, agreed that it's nice to see they weren't just covering the movie beat for beat and worked in more of the lore and stories.

Yeah this is an underrated gem of the NES as far as I'm concerned. A lot of games based on movies were not so good, this is an exception.
I remember renting this from Blockbuster multiple times when I was a kid. I did beat it but the hardest part for me was the escape on horseback between Maid Marian's place and Sherwood forest.
Yeah because they give you no second chances. One rock, done.

Thank you RocKnight! And I'm with you, save states are great for games like this which are built on awful (by today's standards) password systems.
Ty for share , wish an nice day
Thank you!
Great video. I loved this game as a youngling, especially after watching the movie.
Yeah it's very cool if you had just seen the movie as it covers a lot of that while throwing in a few other bits of lore from the story.
Incredible VG101! Jackie Chan of Sherwood Forest. lol
So many unnecessary flips!

Excellent supplementary info. Didn't know that about the water, that's a nice hack.
36:45 All I can see is Guy of Gisborne looking like General Zod from Superman II
Ha I definitely see it.

i'm still playing catch up on your channel & well................never knew this game existed back in the day
Yeah this is a solid, underrated licensed game on the NES which I believe most folks seemed to have missed based on the response. Well worth a play.
currently looking for a copy for my collection of nes games. rented this from a video store as a teen. still have the vhs of the movie
Yeah this would be a good one to have, for sure. Extremely underrated title.
poor duncan. he should eat all the turkey legs if you don't beat the game fast enough.
I like that alternate ending.
I picked this game up not long ago at my retro game store, i haven't played through it yet!
Nice, give it a go sometime!
It looks like a lot like an ultima game, very nice. I liked ultima 6 a lot, underrated game. I may check this game out!
Yeah it's still crazy to me that a 6th entry to any game series could have come out in 1990, but I guess Mega Man 6's release date wasn't too far later.
Great video, thank you again!
Love this one, thank you!
I enjoyed watching this. I like all of your vids dude!
Thank you very much, Matt!
@@VideoGames101 you're welcome
This is a really cool rpg for its time pretty impressive right.
Completely agree!
Do back to the future and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure!
We're doing a month of all games based on films soon, so I've been putting together the class list for it and will keep them in mind, good call.
@@VideoGames101 Looking forward to that! Keep up the good work!
Love how their skeletons explode
Ha yep that's how hard Robin swings.
I remember the movie. I am surprised it had a nes game
A surprisingly decent one, at that.

Another fun fact. You can't see Robin's face on that cover of Nintendo Power, because Nintendo didn't get the copyright usage of Kevin Costner's face.
Ha nice, had never heard that one!

Ha good call for keeping them honest! Seems an odd thing to mess up or change.
@@VideoGames101: Guy of Gisborne didn't approach Robin with his daddy's sword, the Sheriff did! *_(May the great Alan Rickman rest in peace)_*
Never played it, seems fun
Yeah I wasn't sure how familiar people would be with it, but it's a quality game.
It’s very fun. Always been one of my favorites.
I always got lost in the forest 😂😂😂
Yeah virtually every screen is a mini maze.
21:50 - Wasn't the cloak covered with horse crap in the movie?
Ha was it? I don't remember the film that clearly it's been a couple decades at least.

@@VideoGames101 Tony your channel gotta be the most under rated channel on the history of TH-cam land.
Seen the movie but never played the game it looks good
Yeah it's pretty beat for beat faithful, it's impressive. Also a good game.
