  • Robin Hood Prince of Thieves for NES was a pleasant surprise to discover for the system. As a long-time lover of the console and Robin Hood stories, this weird little action RPG was something I never knew I needed in my life. 🍖
The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

Okay I have to admit, the visual comedy of 3:47 made me crack up laughing. You make a good point about the password system. I begrudgingly admit, as much as I hate those long passwords, they do serve a purpose. I really like how this game is structured but it has a lot going against it. Those dang bats or birds or whatever those things are...

You know, it's funny because when Renesance played through this on stream I made fun of him for "tripping on a puddle" and I got my just desserts. I deserved that more than you know!
And I re-watched your video on this after I posted mine today, and I agree... the structure's nice but a little more freedom would've gone a long way to take this game to the next level. I guess they just really liked the movie.
And that noise SLAYS me. I cracked up so much just even editing that part about the ending... I'm such a dork :D

My grandparents owned this game and as a kid I popped it in one time to try it out and fell in love! Not being able to save was detrimental as was the fact that I could only play it at their house, but when we were staying at their place I would wake up at 5am to play and ultimately beat the game. I loved all the different phases of gameplay, the graphics were impressive for the time, I drew so much art inspired by this game, and really Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is a title I had loved but forgotten about over the decades until seeing this video. I am definitely going to have to go back and give it another play now almost 30 years later. Thanks for making this video!

I remember the top-down perspective causing some really weird stuff when you're walking around. Basically, if the perspective showed an object in your way, then it was in your way.... even if realistically, it shouldn't be.
For example, the castles were designed isometrically, so the towers looked slanted. You could get stuck by walking in to the 'top' of the tower, even though the castle should be something like 30 feet away.
"Oh no! I'm being blocked by that castle way over there! How will I stop the Sheriff now?!"

    • @hungrygoriya

"These and many other little sidequests were stuffed into a movie plot that already had a ton of great things going for it."
The truth is, it's actually the other way around. It was the movie that got shoehorned into the game.
Many gamers never knew this cart originally started out as a generic Robin Hood title, and it was even previewed in Nintendo Power #16 as "The Adventures of Robin Hood." But when Virgin and Sculptured Software saw the movie was coming out they saw an opportunity to sang the license and basically added in the movie plot at the last minute. That's also why you don't get any songs from the film as well.

    • @hungrygoriya

This is one of my favorite movies and favorite games on nes. It was actually a decently hard game at the time and still gives a pretty decent challenge now, well worth a play. I wish there were still more conversions of movies to games like this.
Your review is very spot on to my experience. Wish I still own this, need to get me a nes again, with the covid retro spike prices won't be anytime soon.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. I was pretty surprised that I made it through since you're absolutely right... this game is hard! I white-knuckled my way through the horse parts and got lucky for sure!
And yeah, game prices are on the obscene side right now... my collecting has really slowed down over the past few months for the same reasons, but this game is thankfully not overly expensive from what I recall. I hope you can get a copy or find a way to play again sometime.

Glad you went with this one next! This game has a lot of history and interesting tidbits and factoids around it, and it had a huge scope for such a small, intended-as-throwaway cashgrab title. And with such a unique dev team, they managed to make a weird but fun, charming game I have to say is good.

I really appreciate that you review some more obscure games. While i enjoy the nostalgia of hearing you talk about something like Faxanadu, these less well known game reviews make me feel like i'm slowly gaining a better appreciation for game design - it's as though i'm taking a history class. Different possible approaches (lives, passwords, leveling up vs not, equipment, inventory, combat styles, view, etc) were tried in every combination in the NES days, and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
It's like the very early days of flying machines - all kinds of different bizarre designs were tried before trial and error pared it down to the few working body plans we see today.
Thanks for this - your videos are great.

Goriya, I'm sending a pattern here. I feel like either you are tragically subjected to games that need you to start from the beginning, of you seek them out and might be a glutton for punishment. But with how you beat em should show how good you are! This one looks really fun, but those portraits are just nightmare incarnate! This is yet another one I've not heard of until you!

Hahaha well, I think they just happen to find me. I don't usually go into a lot of these knowing much about them at all, though it does sound like a curse when you point out how many times this has happened to me by now!
And yeah, the portraits man... holy smokes. They're something else! There's that one nice one of the mean Baron that's in more colours than just brown and black, but that's such an outlier compared to everything else that's going on. It's so silly!

  • @Larry

What a bizarre thing to hide a password system behind a cheat code :S That must have been a last minute change, _"oh, we wanted to make an RPG, but realized it's a bit short, let's make the player finish it in one sitting now!"_ How did you get the passwords in game?
But it was made by Sclptured Software, who would also make the Super Star Wars games and the SNES ports of Mortal Kombat 1-3.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

See that's the thing! There were no in-game passwords at all. When you died, you could either "continue" or "restart" with no other options. I have no idea how or when the passwords themselves were discovered but I was able to find them online. They more or less take you to each major plot point. When I played through, I didn't use them.
The Super Star Wars games are so fun but so tough... I love the music and the visuals though. They clearly do good work! I've only played MK on Genesis. I'll have to try out the SNES versions sometime.

    • @japanimationman4442
      @japanimationman4442 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It sounds like the passwords might be some sort of debug mode for the devs to test things during development. A lot of times that stuff just gets hidden rather than removed, since removing it takes more work and taking out whole swacks of code might create bugs.

As flawed as this game is, I really loved it as a kid, even to the point of renting it multiple times just to get that little bit further. I never owned the NES version, but I did get the Gameboy version which I played the most until I was an adult (and as far as I know, the Gameboy version was very nearly identical to the NES version, but I could be wrong on that point). Looking back, its clear that the developers had a very good vision for this game and it might have been a bit to ambitious, but I would MUCH rather prefer a game with ambition that ended with a flawed game over the amount of cash grabs at the time. Plus it helps that Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is one of my favorite movies. Also, Robin Hood: Men in Tights is alright ;) the 90s was good to Robin Hood.

I'm sure it really is worth playing as you say, but anyone who has a NES Classic Mini has a ton of A-level NES adventure games that easily blow RHPOT out of the water. Zelda: Outlands, Zelda: Legend of Link, Silva Saga, Just Breed, and dozens more. But back in the 80s, if my parents had bought me RHPOT I'd probably have enjoyed it. There's a lot to be said about not having any other games to play :)

I think there's good in every game. It's easy to compare them to others and write them off as worse, which is a fair way to assess how you choose what you'd like to play, but I like to take a game out as its own thing and try to examine it on its own. I grew up with very few games, so having an opportunity to play something like this, based on a movie I used to (and probably still would) love dearly is a positive experience.

This really needed a battery save system IMO. It was fun and as a long time lover of the Robin Hood story (A version of Robin Hood was the first book I ever read on my own) I enjoyed it. The wedding quest I didn't actually mind because though it wasn't part of the movie such activities are common in Robin Hood literature. I saw the movie when my parents rented it soon after it came out on VHS but didn't see it again for several years because they preferred the Errol Flynn Robin Hood so much. (We watched the Flynn Robin Hood as a family once or twice a month) I liked both so when a TV and VCR were handed down and put in my room I got myself a copy of Prince of Thieves on VHS then later Prince of Thieves was one of the first five movies I owned on DVD.

one of my childhood games, since we had so few games back then. I played this one a lot. Its one that I have a hard time not wearing the rose colored glasses on when people expose its shortcomings lol.
But it does have its fair share of pain points for sure. Back then, I didn't even really understand the concept of leveling up. And when my uncle showed us the passcode system and I found I could use certain ones to skip back after dying, I got frustrated that I couldn't' wear certain armor when i did that as some items are level locked. When I found the game in storage when I got into high school and played/beat it again for the 100th time, I realized why. lol
but yeah, the bo staff is a cheat code when you first get it. But one of the maces/flails is my favorite weapon as it has as much reach as the large sword, not as strong, but super fast to use like one of those balloon bounce balls on a string.

Oh, enemies do have spawn points where they do come at you non-stop, so yeah. They best way to progress in this game is just ignore most of the enemies.
Best way to grind exp in this game is the Giant boar where you can enter leave and re-enter the cave every time the giant boar is exploding. Plus yeah, Staff is literally the best weapon in this game. Rodents can be easily handled with better armor since this game loosely follows D&D rules.
You can also select your party member during combat section by select button so if they're stupidly running towards arrows as they usually do, you can avoid instant slaughter by arrows by manually moving them out of the harm's way.
My main problem with the game was that it was supposed to be bigger DnD adventure but it had lots of chests and stuff left out of the game because it was rushed out of the window for the movie release which is a big shame because I really liked this game as a kid. With little hex editing you could have a working shield for an example which was never used in a game itself but working code and sprites were there for you.
Plus there were couple of chests and keys that led to no chests at all in the game itself that programmers just forgot about.
Basically, in many respects, Robin Hood the prince of thieves was pretty much unfinished game that would've been much bigger and better defined adventure if devs would've been given time to finish what they started instead of just rushing it out for holiday seasons.

@@lucassdmsiudym7707 OH that's right! I remember now... I remembered fighting a giant skeleton later on in the game but I didn't realize you could see him early on! That sucks that he was invincible early on if you didn't know any better. It kinda takes the wind out of the sails of exploration.

They do show him, but he looks more like a robust Legolas than Sean Connery! I'm still always surprised to see him at the end of the movie... it's such a strange cameo.

I have played this game so many times inn my youth. I Have nevere ever seen the game over screen before this video. This is a really easy game. YUou get so many apples and bread from the dead enemies at its imposibil to lose. And for grinding if you want to do that just wait until you get the stick from Litle John
