Wow, just wow. I remember playing this game on one of those 101 games in 1 cartridges (I had an original NES, and one one of those knock-off famicoms out there). It was a nightmare, especially dying (like I did) on 8-1, 8-3 and 8-4. I honestly thought 8-3 couldn't be beaten until I did it once. I was a persistent lad, now, at 45, I don't have those skills or patience anymore 🤣 EDIT: That no death run gave you a new subscriptor

I love old proto-metroidvania games like this and Legacy of the Wizard.

This is weird because I remember beating this game years ago however I don't remember playing through the lava level or most of the underwater levels. Is it possible I beat it without rescuing all the Goonies? It's a fairly monotonous game even when you're making progress but I kept at it because I love the Goonies and the music is fun to listen to. It took hours of exploring and backtracking and still didn't get everything. It was one of the most satisfying experiences beating this game given the number of cryptic clues scattered everywhere, just like Castlevania 2 which I beat only using a strategy guide. I have no idea how I figured out how to get the candle. I must have gotten lucky or simply frustrated at some point. The game itself is OK, but not as good as the cover art promises.

This game reminds me a lot of Friday the 13th. I think it’s the way the rooms are handled. I appreciate the anecdote about the arcade machine. There was a place where we used to camp regularly when I was a kid that had a small arcade room. I used to go for Bad Dudes and Xenophobe!

You know, the cave walls in the underwater sections remind me a lot of the walls from the Dam level in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game - which makes sense since both games were developed by Konami. Just goes to show how often assets were re-used back in those days.

The Goonies 2 is absolutely one of my favorite NES games of all time. My cousin and I played it so much as kids. I remember when we finally found the diving suit. It was such a big deal lol.

I remember playing this as a kid without any guide. It took me awhile, but I beat it. It was very rewarding, this game does have a neat exploration factor.

I was hoping you'd cover this at some point! I played a bit of this growing up but didn't make it super far. Amazing soundtrack, as you mentioned.

I rented and beat this one over a weekend using my trusty Official Nintendo Players Guide. These days I probably couldn't get past the first room. That 8-bit rendition of The Goonies 'Rr Good Enough is AWESOME, though.

Goonies 2 looks complicated but manageable. Worth playing once or twice and worth checking out. The positive is the game has originality. Not many games look like this.

Love this game. Rented it half a dozen times and never finished it until emulating it later. I was one of the few people who did see the Goonies 1 in a Nintendo machine in the arcades, so I knew there was a first game. Just didn't learn it was Japan exclusive till years later. I own both Goonies games now.

Ok, take two of my comments. The first time I played figuring out how to navigate between the two maps was brain-bending as the halls were confusing at first navigation. My brother gave up on the game because of it. Once my brain did bend the game was fun for me at least. Without a walk thought it was a two-week or so play thought after school.

Such an underrated fun game. I got to where I could beat it in a little over an hour as a kid.

I live where parts of the Goonies were filmed in Oregon, and I would note that the Goonies House is, of course, still standing, though the current owners tend to be a bit cranky about people wanting to see the house. Also, there have been Mini-Cons featuring public viewings of the movie with stars, as well as Q&As.
