spare part prices. e.g. VST filter on a F40A is around $90. To fix this, Yamaha wants close to a grand as it involves removing the CST and they wanted to change the pump too. Their warranty is as valuable as the paper its written on. Filter lasted 10 hours on a new install and they were trying to deny the claim. Only way they honored it is because the service manager said and I quote, " I've eaten a ton of warranties for you, you are eating this one!". Five days in a marina to fix it while we lived aboard. Cost close to a grand anyway. Their own certified Yamaha tech told them what the problem was and they refused to budge forcing the service manager to lose it. Apart from that, their engines are great. No complaints once I ditched their filter for a custom SS3166 ultra fine mesh. Because the replacement lasted all of a year till it too died. I'm also not the only one this has happened to.
So yeah, warranties are great but if you have to struggle to get it honored with 10 hours on the clock, its worthless. Then you are on your own and need to buy parts. For me, I wouldn't piss on Yamaha and their warranty department if they were on fire. I'd love to know if Mercury or any other manufacturer actually honors warranties and provides reasonable priced spare parts. Particularly consumables.

Buying a transom mount engine is a massive investment today . I spent 6 months deliberating before pulling the trigger . What sold me was in incredible harsh environments like the North Canada polar regions , governments , explorer's, and native folk mostly had Yams hung over the transom. Good enough for them, me to . 3 years later I'm very happy . F15

As someone who works on boat motors daily im speaking from experience. Yamaha is a tight very well made motor the design simplicity and quality are hands down the best availabe even the paint on the yamaha outboards are gorgeous.
Mercury has made a ton of clunkers over the years theres no doubt about it. The optimax and the supercharged verados had alot of issues, i really enjoy the supercharged verados and they will last but they always seem to need something which is crappy if you have no outboard experience. Mercury has easy and simple maintainance on the new motors.
Back to yamaha, aside from oil changes and maintainance you will litterally never touch them 99% of the time. Yamaha comes with a better steering system, exterior fuel water seperator and a carbon exhaust system for the fuel tank, no mercury comes with that.
There were a couple years some yamahas like the 225hp had [2000-2005] corrosion issues but most are still ticking even with it. Mercurys fine but yamahas better, yamahas made of metal, mercury is a mix of plastic, metal and crappy alloys.

I had a 50 hp Honda since 2000 and had no problems. As my family grew I needed more horse power. After a lot of research I went with a Yamaha F70 due to it's power to weight ratio. No one else was even close. That was 3 years ago and I have no regrets.

Had a honda 90hp last me well over 1000 hours before I sold it. It never really gave me any issues. IMO yamaha and honda are the two best. It also depends on the weight category. Curent Yamaha 50's and 60's are the same engine, former having a restrictor plate. The honda 50 is lighter, but the honda 60 is nearly as heavy as the Yamaha f70.

I have a friend who bought a brand new Mercury 50 HP four stroke, he started having issues as soon as he got it. Yamaha 50HP seems to be faster than Mercury 50 HP too and DEFINITELY MORE RELIABLE!!! YAMAHA IS THE WAY TO GO, PERIOD!!! 👍😎

It would have been helpful to get an analysis from a MAINTENANCE PERSPECTIVE emphasizing ease of working on the two competing products, cost of routine and non-routine maintenance, availability of spare parts and supply chain/expected delivery time for those parts across the various manufacturers. Several years ago I was enrolled a marine technology vocational program through a local community college that offered ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) training and certification. Suzuki had donated 20+ outboards to the vocational program for us students to tear into along with the supporting technical manuals. I have got to say that I was thoroughly impressed with the Suzuki product. Personally I found their technical publications easier to read. in some cases I found getting access to perform the various maintenance tasks slightly easier on the Suzuki. I am in the market to buy a new 250 hp outboard and I will likely go with the Suzuki as a result of that exposure. Before I had attended the marine training course Suzuki would not have been on my mind.
When you stated that both Mercury and Yamaha are excellent products you will get no argument from me. I would add Suzuki to that statement as well. I am not paid by or compensated by Suzuki or any other marine product manufacturer in any way whatsoever. I though the best point you made-outstanding really- was the link between the availability of support and service being a key factor in deciding on which engine to purchase. If you rely on somebody else to maintain your outboard engine then being able to access that service is key and very likely should be the deciding factor when considering which engine to purchase. Personally, I would want to do all my own maintenance. That way I control the quality (only limited by my own knowledge/skill) and time frame (job gets done according to my effort (given parts availability)) and I save on labor costs (not my highest priority, people deserve to be compensated for their skill set, time and effort) plus I ENJOY the work. The work is both interesting, educational and rewarding.
Finally, cost should have been included in this analysis. It is obvious why dealerships try and not divulge cost as there are many variables. As a consumer the lack of transparency and availability of easy to understand cost information is troubling. If Foothills Marine had provided a generalized breakdown according to horse power on say an identical service job on the two might have provided some useful information. Your shop labor rate is going to be the same. Why not compare the cost of a 20 hour and 100 hour inspection(s) on a low and high horse-power model from each manufacturer? You went into detail explaining the different extended warrantees offered by the two competing manufacturers, but again completely omitted the dollar amount charged by each manufacturer for that coverage. Foothills Marine knows consumers place a great emphasis on cost; omitting any meaningful cost analysis detracts from the quality of this video big time!
You told us that they both "look cool" and get good fuel economy, but did not provide any numbers on fuel economy. Why was there no demonstration/test on identical boats loaded to the same weight? Foothills Marine obviously has an attractive dealership, access to most if not all of the information your viewers (who may be considering a purchase are interested in). Foothills Marine already put in the time, effort and cost in producing this quality video. Not including the maintenance perspective or any meaningful cost information seems like a serious oversight to me.
This video begins by criticizing a dealership for only recommending the product that they sell. Then this same video goes on to do exactly the same thing by essentially declaring it a tie (in the comments and video content) and recommending only what they sell. "Yamaha vs Mercury.. and the winner is" is entertaining clickbait. I have never been associated with "Foothills Marine" this was my first exposure to this company. None of my criticism is coming from any kind of personal animosity. I am trying to continue to educate myself about outboards which is why I viewed this video in the first place. I wish Foothills Marine every success.
    _ Respectfully

Thank you for such an insightful and constructive review! We completely understand the callout about not being specific enough - and you're exactly right: there are so many variables between both brands at different horsepowers that it's difficult to delve into EVERYTHING. For now, we hope to provide a good comprehensive overview of the two brands and their product offerings. On the horizon, however, you've certainly inspired us to do more in-depth breakdowns between specific models. For example, a Yamaha 250 SHO vs. Merc 250 FourStroke would be an excellent time to dive into fuel consumption, engine performance, and all the specs we can think of.
We're more than happy to discuss prices for things such as service jobs, and you propose a great solution: compare the cost of a 20 hour and 100 hour inspection on a low and high HP model from both Yamaha and Mercury. That's an excellent suggestion. We're actually in the middle of writing a "Cost of Boat Service' script and will be sure to include that!
Again - we appreciate your comment and time. Thanks for helping make our video series better.

As a dealer you know that the 40-60 hp class Mercury's are all are made in China and the 30 HP and below Mercs are all made by Tohatsu. At any rate the comparison should be between Yamaha and Suzuki in mid-range HP class. Who cares about who has the best motors for the huge HP class :) if you have that much money repowering at 500 hours is no problem. Most all major makers are producing great performing motors....but for the common man in the mid-range HP class, I think 9 out of 10 guys that put a lot of hours on the ocean would say Yamaha over Merc, but pick Suzuki over either. But the later G1 E-tec's were better than either in all aspects but suffered from bad marketing.

No doubt that Yamaha is very reliable, but they've made very little investment in improving their offerings over the last 10+ years. The only thing "new" has been their 5.6L V8 motors (425/450hp) and that was because they had to come up with a replacement for their 5.3L V8 (350hp) that was destroying flywheels regularly. Other than that, they just change the look of the cowlings and put NEW on their website for the same product 3 years running. Understandably, they want to keep things simple to maintain their reputation for reliability, which has served them well. They are the Toyota/Lexus to Mercury's BMW/Mercedes-Benz/Porsche (at least in the 200+hp range).

I have personally have a 6HP Mercury Outboard from 2023 on my small inflatable boat and it has been a dream, starts constantly on first pull no problems given it is a new outboard, I haven’t had the opportunity to try Yamaha although my friend has one with 30hp and he said it has been fantastic and reliable since 2006

After sixty years of boating … fishing, diving and commercial ocean work, my knee jerk reaction is that these are both fine manufacturers and I have used a bunch of both in varying displacement and applications. I think this was an an excellent review and reasonably balanced. I would concur that both will do the job(s) relatively equally but I agree with the reviewer that the higher power outboards are pro-Mercury all the way. For me, if I need one or more outboards over 100HP each, I always go with Mercury. I admit that as former Navy… I lean towards American brands. And finally, I think the reviewer missed a very key point in that it matters very little which of these two brands you purchase unless you take very good care of these machines… especially in a saltwater environment… you are going to have problems and surprises… most of which will be bad.

I’m about mechanic at an actual boat dealership Yamaha is waaaaay better you will never touch it unless for routine maintenance like oil changes. Literally just oil changes The only thing I ever work on every day is mercury because they are constantly breaking down. I never see a Yama unless it’s an oil change.

Yamaha are the most reliable so that's more important on a boat than on a car. If your car breaks down, you can get out and wait for help without any issues. If your boat engine breaks down, you could be on the rocks before you know it or turned sideways to the waves.

Great review, but there is a glaring omission. Our host mentions mercury’s joy stick control and that Mercury uses, paraphrasing here, cutting edge technology. The host mentions Yamahas slow trolling feature but fails to talk about the plethora of advanced features of Yamahas joy stick system, the Helm master EX that works with Yamahas digital motors, (Mercury verados are all digital and are what is required for their joy stick system) In addition to the slow trolling feature there is a spot lock feature which will hold the bow or the stern into the wind, there is also drift point that will follow a route you set up with speed to slowly navigate the boat over a reef, wreck or other structure and then if desired will hold the boat at the end of the route. The helm master EX will also function with your mfd and act as an auto pilot for headings and speed and upon arrival will slow the boat and hold it in that position. Yamaha wrote the book on joy stick controls and are by far and away the best in this area.

I purchased a new 25 foot Robalo center consul and my dealer offered Yamaha or Mercury, I decided on the Mercury for two primary reasons; first, Mercury was a V8 where the Yamaha was a V6 and second mercury is made in the USA which is very attractive to me. it also did not hurt that the Mercury was black and the Yamaha gray or white as the hull of my boat is all black and the mercury was aesthetically more pleasing. I only have one season on the boat/outboard, but to date I have had no problems with either.

I've had nothing but great things from Yamaha Outboards. As a Rowing Coach, I switched to a Yamaha 15 hp and the results were remarkable. Much more quiet, very good on fuel, and the get up and go when needed. I'd put on in hours daily use that most Outboard owners would get in years of use. A season in Coaching on the water for us in Competitive Rowing was incredible compared to weekenders trolling for a few hours maybe once a month. I'm an avid fisherman outside of my Coaching. My Yamaha was outstanding.
Now I have used both Mercury and Evinrude during my many years of coaching. But I wanted my own Outboard and no sharing. The Evinrude was good, and it was good on fuel use too. It loved to use fuel. Mercury though loved being run fast.
So, I equate the Evinrude and Mercury perhaps to choices of spark plugs. When you run these engines for 6 hours per day weekdays and 10 hours on Saturday and Sunday. It totals up the running hours per motor really fast. But I must say, my Yamaha, first pull, every time, and quiet.
