Ive read that Jack The Ripper seemed to represent how kid Jack was scared he was going to be this violent killer. Basically a manifestation of his anxiety and fear of becoming an evil dude whos gonna kill women, maybe even Acacia
im glad you said this, omg 😭 a long time ago, i theorized that he viewed jack the ripper as something he didn’t want to become/didnt want people to see him as (a monster). he also mentions them having the same name in the book and i think that makes it clear that it’s meant to be a parallel of sorts
i vividly remember being traumatized by this movie as a child to the point that every single nightmare i had for like a year after contained some element from this movie, i have not rewatched since
when i tell you my little brother absolutely terrorized me w this frrreaking movie for months. we watched it together as kids and it absolutely terrified me and he just loveddd talking ab this nightmare of a movie literally every. chance. he. got. 😭💀
I was like 5 when I saw this but honestly I didn't find the movie scary so much as I found it strange and confusing and really depressing and different from anything else I ever watched but I was just really freaking sad at the end "huh why did every thing freeze, what how is he climbing the freaking snowflakes, wait did he DIE! wait nooooooo fuuuuuuuuu-" I think I watched it a few times after that to try and make sense of the movie but I haven't watched it since then but its been lingering in the corners of my brain ever since and I find my self thinking of it every now and then and then I saw this video and was like "HOLY CRAP ITS THIS FUCKING MOVIE" and clicked immediately
Yeh it was creepy but it didnt give me nightmares... I rewatched it and its kinda good and the scene where they see for the first time and sing was lovely.
if i remember correctly either the book was based off a concept album or the concept album was based on the book - all i remember is out of the three the movie is the one that was made last (it uses the songs from the album) - so i guess they just tried fitting that one song that doesn't really have anything to do with the movie's plot into the movie as best as they could
What i find interesting is that the character designs of the movie kinda reminds me of the singer Kerli's first album cover and Jack off Jill's "clear hearts, grey flowers" album cover🤔 They both look like big-headed porcelain dolls.

I am OBSESSED over jack. The ending always left such a bitter sweet moment. So many mysteries and things you don’t find out and it’s just a wonderful emotionally driving experience.
The reason jack didnt tell acacia he was the boy she was in love with was because he thought acacia was in love with joe, not him. Later he realizes she was talking about him and thats when george helps him tell acacia. Thats why jack was upset about the situation, he didnt know it was him at first.
I LOVED all the weird surreal parts of the movie. It felt like an old school Alice in Wonderland type fairytale like not everything makes sense but we’re all okay with it. Also the music is TOP TIER
'La mécanique du coeur' is like my favorite novel and when you tried to pronounce it i had an aneurism rapture. So that's why everything just blends in so good. The ending is also very different from the book. it's kinda long to explain but here i go. SPOILER WARNING FOR THE ACTUAL NOVEL. So in that version Jack doesn't actually die and just gets in a long coma, pursues his dream to be with Acacia who is now married with joe, actually achieves it, but fumbles by not revealing his actual identity. Acacia gets really mad, dumps him and just lets Jack reflect on his actions and their consequences and they just go on and live their life.
I was hearing him talk about the good music and keep waiting for him to mention the writer being in a band. Happy to find someone who commented about it. The vocals in French are sooooo good
The book ending is honestly such a tragic for realistic story of what would happen in that scenario, and it makes me sad that in order to get an animated movie that told the story, they had the dumb it down for kids and make everything more kid friendly
@@Pilapuzzles Yeah, that's annoying. I like the book ending better, it teaches kids that you shouldn't lie or hide who you are to the people you love.

I can clearly remember how hard I fell in love with this movie as a child, I remembered every single part of it before it was cleared from my memory and you revived all those good memories of me watching and rewatching this movie which I'm very thankful for.
I remember watching this movie when I was like 11, the Jack the Ripper part was the most memorable part to me too. I always figured the reason why he shows up is to kind of show Jack's fear of being dangerous to other people around him after presumably killing Joe.
I love Jack the Cuckooclock heart! I was scared of some of the scenes but now I’ve watched it over and over so now it’s more peaceful. I love the songs and the ending. ❤ great movie
its crazy how i watched this movie as a kid and remember loving it!! and i would rewatch it all the time during elementary and middle school, it was one of my favs growing up, even tho i didnt understand as a kid, i was so captivated by the visuals and the songs and I was a sucker for romance, i def cried at the end each and every time.

Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart (La Mécanique du Cœur) is a French fantasy novel by Mathias Malzieu, who is also the lead singer of the band Dionysos. The book was adapted into an animated movie in 2013, but some aspects of the story were toned down or censored in the film, making the book version slightly darker and more complex.
Dude thank you you have given so many movies of this style the love that they deserve STILL 9 FROM 2009 IS INCREDIBLE AND WISH IT WAS ACTUALLY MADE IN STOP MOTION BUT IT IS STILL AMAZING
20:50 The real reason Madeline told Jack not to fall in love wasn't because of his fragile cuckoo clock heart, it's because love is a confusing-ass mess! 😅
i remember this movie being on netflix AGES ago, and i never watched it because the previews scared me when i was younger. now that i'm older i should give it a shot because i have learned to love this art style
The way you describe movies is honestly very captivating. You clearly care about representing the work honestly while giving your thoughtful takes on the films as a whole. You are definitely an underrated TH-camr
The reason why the music in this movie is so good is because the movie itself was made out of the concept of an album from a band called Dionysos, their music is what you hear along the movie
This is if Tim Burton animated Hugo and the main protag was the automaton that the kid in Hugo was messing with first half of the movie lmao I actually..really love it. It made me relive a lot of the feelings I had watching Hugo. Ty for the suggestion!
a great movie that defined my childhood. after a rewatch, i’m realizing there’s some weird kind of sexist remarks about Acacia that don’t hold up very well. that aside, the animation and story line are kind of masterpieces
I remember how much I loved this movie even the parts that scared me. But when I showed my parents it they immediately told me that I couldn’t watch it again so after that I had to watch the movie in secret😅
Ahhhh this movie is one of my obscure faves, I always appreciate your channel talking about some of these obscure movies I was convinced only I enjoy! Also thank you for talking about the MUSIC in this movie, the song that plays over the final scene brings me to UGLY tears every time!
This is my favorite movie since I first saw it when I was little. I always thought of it as this odd story about different kinds of love and how powerfully it can affect us.
Wasn't one grave for Madeline, one for the hamster that got punted like a football, and one for was Jack when they told everyone that he died instead of telling them that he really ran away?
Aww I've been waiting for this for so long! Thank you! I feel like this was somewhat a passion project, that's why it comes out a little weird sometimes, it is full of symbolism that you have to interpret yourself, like in poetry (like when Acacia literally covers herself with thorns when she feels uncomfortable), but it made me listen to the soundtrack over and over for weeks
I watched this 8-9 years ago with a friend of mine, I absolutely hated it, but it might just be how my friend reacted to it, by the end she was bawling like a baby, digging her finger nails into my arm, mumbling an almost unintelligible "it's so sad" until she was screaming it into my ear..... good times.
love this movie so much and it finally just clicked for me that jack the ripper is probably symbolic or a sort of vision in jack’s head created by the guilt of thinking he murdered joe. i honestly could never wrap my head around that scene either, but i think it makes a lot of sense this way.
Hi! The scene in the ghost train is a wink to the writer of the book, director of the movie and finally voice actor of Jack, Mathias Malzieu who has a band called Dionysos. It the french version of the greek god's name and "os" is "bone" in french so the skeletons are a play on words. Also it was one of my favourites growing up (I didn't watch the dvd that many times but I know the somgs by heart). I am surprised that the songs are well translated and sung in the english version. Even if it cannot compare to the original french ;)
I remember being sick one day and I was in my moms bedroom all day watching Netflix movies, I eventually watched this and it's the only movie I still remember from that day it just stuck in my mind for years
i watched this movie as a kid because it's quite popular in france, and then rewatched it at like, 12 years old and made it my entire personality. i've always loved the creepy but also cute and poetic vibes, and how slightly nonsensical and whimsical universe. many backgrounds characters have these cool quirks and designs. i really recommend listening to the album "La mécanique du coeur", which is by the band Dionysos. the singer of this band is the author of the book the film is based on and the album is REALLY good. overall, i just love the fairytale vibes of this movie, and how artistic, funny and emotional it is
I loved this weirdo movie when I was in middle school, I still occasionally listen to the music and the visuals are super cool. Plus you gotta love a suprise Jack the Ripper scene, because if I had a nickel for every time that's happened I'd have two nickels, which it's really really weird that it happened twice.
Fun Fact! In the Fairy Acacia scene, it’s a metaphor for the fact he’s having a wet dream…! And this doesn’t just stop at the visuals, if you listen to the song “Le Berceuse hip hop du Docteur Madeleine” (also the same song that plays in the background of the scene) the lyrics literally state it.
I honestly love this movie but will also admit that parts of it are like... an unsettling acid trip. Overall though it's a beautiful and poignant story, and really beautiful aesthetically.
This movie owes its hauntingly unique character designs/art direction to Italian pop surrealist, Nicoletta Ceccoli. One of my all time favorite painters, her work is mesmerizing and deserves so much more recognition!! If you love Alice in Wonderland themes, medieval symbolism and dark fantasy, please check her out!
I watched this for the first time when I was like 5-6 and I fell in love with everything to the art to the music their voices stayed in my memory for years. For a while I thought it was something made up in my mind from when I was little but then I finally found it on TH-cam and immediately recognized it and then rewatched it 5x a day 💀
I really need to take the time to watch all the movies you’ve reviewed that I haven’t seen because you only seem to cover stuff I’m really interested in. And everything you talk about that I have seen are movies I already love lol
I LOVVVVEEEDDD this movie when it first came out on Netflix it really inspired my art for a couple years, it was the perfect mix of surrealism w a quirky style
10:06 HOLY SHIT. I GUESSED IT. I KNEW IT. but also THANK YOU i have memories of watching this when i was a wee lad but i had forgotten the title and now i can finally rewatch it
I loved this movie as a child, and I still do to this day! I had it in French as a child, but the music has always really stood out to me in both the English and French versions!
I love your run through of animated movies lately. You're giving light to so many of my favorites and I love hearing someone new talk about them. I wish I could be a patron to give suggestions because there are SO many gems hidden in time.
If you think the music are good, it's normal : the guy who wrote the book and who made the movie is also a singer. He's the voice of Jack in the french version. He wrote all the songs when he was writing the book, and all the characters are dubbed by singers of his friends. And fun fact, miss acacia is inspired by the singer olivia ruiz, who dubbed her in french and spanich, and at this period, olivia ruiz was in a relationship with matthias malzieu, the guy who wrote, realize and dubbed Jack, and after who the design of Jack is made And you need to listen the slammy songs of Joe in French : he got a voice so deep it's scarry, and so coool ! I love this movie with all my heart, the guy who wrote it has a very strange universe, but it's so imaginative. Also, the guy named George who invented a camera is actually a reference to George Mélies, the guy who made the movie with the moon and the bomb in her eye
I watched this movie countless of times even during childhood because I just love it, the music is great and the characters are amazing. This movie has my heart and I'll always be glad to rewatch it any time of the day, it brings me comfort

The obsession i have with this movie is unreal its definitely a special interest it captured my heart the second i watched it as a child ❤❤
I watched this for the first time when I was like 5-6 and I fell in love with everything to the art to the music their voices stayed in my memory for years. For a while I thought it was something made up in my mind from when I was little but then I finally found it on TH-cam and immediately recognized it and then rewatched it 5x a day 💀
This movie felt more like a series of interconnected music videos than a movie
It’s been so long since I have seen this movie. Seeing the title I remembered liking it yet I suppressed the memory at the same time. 😂
The book of life comment was crazy that movie along with its covers were fantastic
10:06 HOLY SHIT. I GUESSED IT. I KNEW IT.
but also THANK YOU i have memories of watching this when i was a wee lad but i had forgotten the title and now i can finally rewatch it
If anyone was able to watch this film at the earliest release of it. You're all legends.
One of my fav comfort shows! So glad you made a video on this
I loved this movie as a child, and I still do to this day! I had it in French as a child, but the music has always really stood out to me in both the English and French versions!
God the ending of this movie fucked me upas a child, I cried so hard oh my godI still tear up at the thought
YOU FINALLY COVERED THIS MOVIE YESSSSSSSSS
I've seen this movie a million times, absolutely one of my favorites. SO GLAD someone is talking about it!!!!11!!!1!1!!!
And fun fact, miss acacia is inspired by the singer olivia ruiz, who dubbed her in french and spanich, and at this period, olivia ruiz was in a relationship with matthias malzieu, the guy who wrote, realize and dubbed Jack, and after who the design of Jack is made
And you need to listen the slammy songs of Joe in French : he got a voice so deep it's scarry, and so coool !
I love this movie with all my heart, the guy who wrote it has a very strange universe, but it's so imaginative.
Also, the guy named George who invented a camera is actually a reference to George Mélies, the guy who made the movie with the moon and the bomb in her eye
Well now that hes revied one paris themed underrated film, how long until he revies a momster in paris huh?
I watched this movie countless of times even during childhood because I just love it, the music is great and the characters are amazing. This movie has my heart and I'll always be glad to rewatch it any time of the day, it brings me comfort
God, this was one of my FAVORITES as a kid
This is one of my favorite movies! I love the music too. I watch it at least twice a year
