Parity is good for the hardcore fans, outside of them, dynasties have always been far more profitable and better for the league overall, personally I'm loving not having any real idea who's gonna be in the finals every year, but look at the 70s, when was the last time you heard people ever talk about Willis Reed's Knicks or Wes Unseld's Bullets/Wizards, the 70s is literally the least talked about decade in NBA history because of parity.
this next decade will effectively be the same. NBA basically recreated the 70s era of basketball again and it will once again need to change things up so the new age bird, magic and jordan can help save the league again.

one thing i think people are forgetting is that the nba is now in business with sports betting apps. meaning with more parity, sports betting will now be a lot tougher when you don't know which team is gonna win it all. even on a game to game basis, one team destroying the league like 2016 warriors, 2013 heat, 08 celtics, 01 lakers 96 bulls etc will likely be a thing of the past. which means vegas and the apps will be losing a lot less on payouts. especially when you got a team like the 2017 and 2018 warriors where you already kinda knew the outcome of the finals before the playoffs began, people would be able to bet with confidence. now you don't know if boston will even return to the finals. even if there is an "upset" , the betting public will be so divided on who wins that payouts from the apps will consistently get lower and betting big will be more risky.

The league is sacrificing viewership for this though. Sports betters and fantasy leagues owners don’t boost ratings. And while deals with draft kings are big money, they aren’t as big money as broadcasting deals. That’s where the league makes the lump sum of its money. As the viewership declines, I doubt sports betting with make up the losses. So it seems that the NBA just as many corporations, has chosen money in hand today over money in the bank tomorrow. And that’s not a sustainable course of action.

That makes sense for the NFL but the NFL is a differently so the fact that he wanted to be like that is stupid. In the NFL you only have one game in the playoffs to lose. So that one game matters more. But for the NBA, the best team will win usually because it’s the best 4 of 7. The way they are structured is completely different. So if he wants NFL money he needs to restructure the league. I think he needs to focus on making the NBA the NBA and not the NFL. 💯

Not a unique opinion, but I think dynasties are important to sport. Parity gets boring, because there's no villain for everyone to hate on and no awe inspiring team that everyone talks about. The NBA needs dynasties more than any other league, since its so star driven. Every superstar has been connected to a dynasty: Kobe, MJ, Steph, Magic, Larry, hell, even Lebron OWNED the East. It was fun seeing what East team could take him down, even if none did.
NBA heads love parity, but it's bad for business and general cultural exposure. I get that the NBA wants to be the NFL, but the nature of the sport makes that so unlikely, and it's not like the NFL LACKS dynasties (hell, the Chiefs' success is a huge driver of interest)

So that's probably at least 5 years maybe more depending on motivation. All that changes if SGA decides he doesn't wanna be there anymore though.

as an okc fan it sucks to see how perfectly this rebuild has come together, while knowing that for the entire rest of our superstar’s prime, this cba is going to get in the way. i’m hoping we can continue to draft well, but it just doesn’t feel right that the team couldn’t possibly be in a better situation and yet things still feel so uncertain

Still find their gamble to remove dynasties a pretty confounding one, is it a strategy to create stronger core fanbases within contending organizations? I seriously don't know why they're suddenly going against a formula that has worked for so long. Not that the original dynasties era was perfect, but a little tinkering could've worked. This feels overkill.

@@KAye633 As an NBA junkie, I do admittedly love this era of extreme parity, but I'm just talking about it purely from a business standpoint. And even then, there was a twisted joy in rooting for the underdog to beat the big bad wolf. All those memories of me being tormented by the Warriors, I do admittedly wish we'd have an established villain team like that sometime down the line, but idk the new CBA stuff makes that impossible practically.

I guess these rules are made to prevent another golden state, but golden state was only able to work because the new CBA increased the salary cap by so much so the warriors could afford KD. The NBA is killing their product based on a miscalculation on their part.
The timing of this stupid shit stucks so much as a nuggets fan. We have a top 20 player in the history of the sport in his prime. Two years of his prime were wasted because of injuries to our 2nd and 3rd options, along with our bench being decimated. Then we finally break through, just to lose our 6th man. Then, because of the cba, not only do we lose a starter, our bench is filled with five guys who are unplayable, one guy coming off an ACL injury, a guy who should be a 3 or 4 who's gonna have to play the 5, a 3rd year player, a 2nd year player who didnt get much time as a rookie cuz of an mcl injury, and soon, the biggest wildcard in the sport in Russel Westbrook

As a thunder fan, Sam presti is a SMART ASS MAN. He has so many draft picks and will trade great players for even more draft picks and he will be able to continue this cycle of doing so and bringing players around Shai Jdub and Chet for years to come

this new CBA doesnt want superteams being formed especially by big market teams. this CBA goes after supermax players. basically, making them choose 25-35% of your team's cap or take a pay cut so your team has the cap space to give you help. supermax players cant choose both anymore.

I do agree that the nba does not want there to be dynasties, however I do think that they want the league to still be player driven. They just want those players to be spread across every team so every fan base has “their guy”. Brunson in new york, ant in Minnesota, ja in Memphis. I think we will see this trend continue.

I think back to back champions/finals appearances are really good for the league because it makes finals matchups that much more interesting and get higher ratings, because there’s more familiarity.

Celtics are in like the perfect situation as they got the Chip and their 2 core stars are only 26 and 27 so barring any career ruining injury they still have 2-3 years of championship contention and 5-7 years of being relevant as well as the other contracts are built where it ends when their prime ends or the start of their inevitable decline (well except Jrue cuz we payin that man till he's 38) but Boston basically did is we got our chip and lets ride it out till the wheels fall off

Look at every competitive team you’ll see a common trend. Their superstars were drafted and their role players were signed.

@@donleonard4446 the Celtics had a very unique scenario. If you remember, they did go out and get superstars, they got Kyrie and Hayward, they didn’t work out. They were able to draft high at the same time because of the Nets fumble. The only other times I can really remember that happening are the Warriors getting a high pick because of injuries, the 76ers because of injuries and the Spurs to get Duncan, because of injuries.

The fans cried for parity for years. It’s as much their fault as the league’s for making it harder for teams that draft and develop top talent to retain them for extended runs.

And the reason they’re panicking because the one young budding star they were developing got shipped out due to problems within the team. Historically golden state wasn't a greatly ran franchise for decades.The curry era has brought immense high value to them but they still hold no generational prestige to them like the lakers,knicks or celtics hold so if they start slipping once curry is gone idk if players look at them the same like they do with teams I mentioned before outside them being a california team

I love it honestly, for a few years the nba was being held hostage by superstars signing contracts and demanding trades months later that hurts teams and it gives guys to much power to just go to to where they want without playing out there deals

What you're missing is that everyone is in the same field. Its up to players to take pay cuts. Either you get your max or a chance to win titles. Winning titles can generate money outside of the league. Mj made more money through endorsements.

The point of the second apron is not to reward or punish teams for drafting well, it is solely to bring a greater degree of parity. Good or bad, taking your spurs example with Wemby and another player, well, if this second apron continues, it means they will have to decide between a top heavy team or a deep team. It simply means that there will be no more teams with big 3s and deep rosters. That is a necessary change for parity. That's the whole damn point of the new CBA; to make more competitive teams.

@@nickjohannessen9855 Yeah, that's the point. You force teams to let go of some of that talent to other teams. Just because talent is home grown doesn't mean it's good for the league. All anyone did during the 2000s and 2010s was complain about the Spurs and the Warriors, but the majority of their cores were made up of homegrown talent.

@@nickjohannessen9855 they're looking to change how the league is marketed. Look at the NFL. Absolute parity, with only a small handful of dynasties, and they're doing better than ever. The league wants to shift away from marketing players and more towards marketing the league, but they can't do that without parity

Adam Silver basically wants the NBA to return to the 70's: parity among all 29 teams and one-year champions, NO dynasties or great teams.
In my own opinion, I think that the second apron is a good idea. However, it is made severely more limiting by these gigantic supermax contracts that are being handed out and seen as the norm. In hockey for example, unless you're like Connor McDavid, you're probably not making much more than 8-12m per year, even as a superstar. And that is simply a result of there being a hard cap I am sure. I don't think that there should be a hard cap, but I do think that there should be severe penalties for going over the salary cap.

We all love parity. I love that everyone gets a fair chance but we need dynasty’s. Maybe not a team that always wins but a team to hate. Rick flair said it best “you need a good guy and a bad guy”. You always need a team to hate where people will watch you just to see you lose as much as others want you to win. I care about basketball and don’t want to see the league go downhill.
I view it like this : you’re watching your favorite tv show and your favorite character dies near the end of the season (the nuggets lose in the second round). And you kinda check out of the last few episodes because the rest of the character and plot development wasn’t good enough.
Dynasties build investment for fans of BASKETBALL. Not just their team. In the past few years, when your team loses there is less at steak. There is not a draw without a storyline. A rivalry. A arc. That can only be built over the course of years and years.

As a fan of the Pistons, I love the second apron keeping some of these dynasties in check. The Warriors vs Cavs always making the finals was boring. The dynasty isn't terribly exciting and the second apron really forces you to draft well to remain competitive since the price of a star is so high

Not a new opinion but I just wished that there would be exceptions for how grown talent. It supports the teams who actually draft well. Look at OKC. Sure they are good now but once everyone gets out of their rookie contracts, they are gonna be in trouble and that’s sucks, because most of their talent home grown (outside of sga cause hes from lac if Im not mistaken)
I think this is the most meaningful discourse we are having about the nba in the last 25 years. It’s kinda 50/50 though. The 2017 and 2018 finals sucked, we knew who was making the finals before both seasons even started. Also there are other reasons why the league suffers not just because of parity.

I loved the way you explained what is the second apron and why it is such a greedy (and stupid) idea. lets hope this gets reversed or canceled some time sone because there is no way a Team can be formed and develop truely and sustainably in this cenario. I dont think this stops at the dynasty, but its actually a team killer, we will see trades and a lot of free agency testing that will make teams completely different from what they were 2 seasons ago. How can a team that builds on chemistry on the court and certain tactical ideas be actually competetive when these get thrown out the window because you cant afford to sustainably develop talent to fit those roles without putting your team's future in jeopardy?! It feels almost against the sport itself and anti-competitive, it levels the teams to a lower level. Yes, they are leveled but with a worse basketball product. No fun in a playoff game with 1 star in each team. I hope the NBA will see this and realise that the regular season wont really atract much more of an audience to compensate for the one they will lose when the playoffs come. (Just a reminder that the NBA draft is built exactly for the "parity" the NBA wants so much to achieve. The second apron is a lose-lose situation)

Also the reason why the NBA will never touch the NFL in popularity is because they market the players and the teams involved, even letting bad teams have nationally televised games. They actively encourage player fans, but mostly team fans.
Globally, the NBA is way bigger than the NFL.

The issue is that there is parity, but we don’t see it in the finals. Naturally, we’ll see miami/dallas sneak in on good matchups but they only end up as fodder to the juggernaut that won the other conference because the nature of basketball is just the better team wins.

Dynasties are fun but without them a larger number of teams will have the chance to win. That's just math. And that will invigorate those franchises and engage their fans. The league as a whole will profit from that.

I don't think the league wants dynasties to die. They want them to be organic. Actually invested in by their orgs. Otherwise they become the suns or the nets or the clips, forever mercenary teams with no actual meaningful designs on being a good basketball organization and they slowly destroy their own fan base lol
Mate great video but no one can deny that big market teams were eating up the big name players. LA alone had Lebron, AD, Kawai, Harden and PG all go there. None of them were drafted there. This doesn’t happen in smaller or even middle sized markets.

Even though I love multiple teams doing well or reaching the finals, I’m okay with single team dynasties or even 3-peat matchups. But if we get anything like the Warriors and Cavs again, I’ll lose my mind. Goated era fs, especially with social media taking off, but I also hated it badly.
I think what people here are forgetting is that the nba are trying to sell more of there games to more platforms. This requires more games people want watching and to do this you need a more competitive league. People talk about how popular dynasties are but nobody cares about mid table teams when only 2 teams could realistically win the championship.
I will definitly say that parity is great for the league. As a Wizards fan it's often felt hopeless and they barely have any support at all. Not sure this is the right solution though, but it's nice if more teams have a chance. I will say the late 2010s got painfully boring when it was Cavs vs Warriors every single year and after the Warriors got KD it felt there wasn't even any point in watching the NBA because we all knew who was going to win. I feel like the league is much better when you don't have that true dominant team and there's more suspense about who's going to win it all. I didn't watch the NBA in the 90s but I'd imagine I probably would've gotten pretty tired of seeing the Bulls win every year, probably rooted for the Jazz during the finals just to have a different champion.
2nd apron hurting small market teams who draft well is going under the radar. Like you pointed out so clearly, the Thunder gotta win a title in the next couple of seasons or they're going to be screwed once SGA, Chet, and JWill need to be paid. Same goes for any other team that's in the midst of a rebuild who is stacked with picks.
I don't know how the exact mechanics would've worked but there should've been a provision for teams to re-sign players that they drafted/acquired during the draft and developed at a lower cap/tax hit. That would still lead to hard decisions but give some wiggle room for homegrown cores to stay together. It would also stop built super teams from dominating since traded players and free agents would count fully against the cap/tax. That would benefit the Nuggets, Celtics, Warriors, and Wolves, who all have/had mostly homegrown cores while it would hurt the intended teams like the Clippers, Lakers, and Suns who all mostly traded for and signed people.
I'm pretty convinced this will only hurt the NBA in the long run. We'll see what happens

I can’t help but think that the CBA is a way to retire older stars and reduce their power. So many stars demanding a trade and shifting so many organizations, and the stars being older, make it feel like the NBA is trying to give organizations more power over the players.
Paying an older star a max and then having them only be available 50 games (intentionally or not) is great for parity in the regular season, but not as a championship team.
The CBA is able to be renegotiated after 7 years, forcing players to play 65 games for award considerations and limiting player movement.
I think the NBA is trying to give the reigns to the younger guys

I like dynasties but only when their top 2 or 3 players are drafted.
This is why i respected the Spurs, Bulls, and the Warriors (without KD).
I also like when superstars stay where they’re drafted. Giannis, Jokic, Embiid, Curry.
What i can’t stand is when Golden State can pickup KD after having the best record in NBA history, when Lebron can demand for more help while having one of the best teams in the league, and when weird super teams like the clippers are made.
11:58-12:08 I get what you’re saying but these players were drafted/traded. And even then “the media” wants to get those players to a bigger market. A lot of people were upset with the Suns vs Bucks finals because they were both smaller market teams compared to previous years. The problem with small markets is trying to attract big names during free agency. Dame wanted to go to Miami originally but he ended up in Milwaukee and was bored allegedly (there were other factors of course). Small market teams can’t compete when it comes to living in LA compared to Detroit.
I agree with most if not everything you said in this video but one thing you failed to mention is that if good players still really want join up all they have to do is take pay cuts like if you really want to win you taking the pay cut like Brunson did. Players just now have to be more accepting to taking cuts. A players greed and selfishness now is what’s going to determine how things turn out PG and klay could’ve taken a pay cut to stay but both said how they felt “ disrespected by the offers they were given “ well you have 2 options now star player do you want this $250mill max contract which nobody gonna blame you for taking you did earn it but it’s going to ruin the teams chances of making any moves or are you willing to take cuts to build out the roster and actually win a ring.
Love the video, but one criticism of your argument against the “players go to better markets” point - yea players like Ja & Ant are in smaller locations but they were drafted there. Staying & the. signing for an extension nobody else can pay you is different from actively seeking those locations out in FA. Dame went to Milwaukee to ring chase and San Antonio is a top 10 largest city in the US (with a dynastic history.) I feel like those counterpoints don’t disprove the argument

Parity was cool when you had the Harden Rockets, Lob City Clippers, a young warriors squad, KD/Russ dynamic duo, the timeless wonder Spurs, and the Lebron Kyrie Cavs.
You had huge superstars at their peaks, with all time teams, all competing for the championship.
Now days you have half built teams catching fire randomly, shooting their way into the finals.
There are no interesting storylines anymore, no peaking competing during their championship window.
It’s all due to player movement

Dame didn’t choose Milwaukee over Miami if I remember correctly. Joe Cronin refused to do business with Riley after a certain point.
That being said, I really enjoy this video and critical look at the second apron. I wish there was a different way to achieve the spread of talent that didn’t come at the cost of established vets and role players that do the little things to push teams over the top.

Maybe something like every extension a player has with the team, the less the deal affects the cap. Like persay Wemby gets a supermax after this. Instead of being counted as 5 years 350, it would count toward the cap as 5 years 315 toward the cap. And then it tacks on an extra 5% discount every extension toward the cap. But make it only for players drafted by the team.
Also, the way players develop is more universal than in times past. Like Jordan said that he couldn't imagine going straight to the nba like Kobe and LeBron.
It's nothing totally new. But there is a stronger emphasis on weeding out nba material than during Jordan's time.
They're actually just more potential stars than at any time ever before
