    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lloyd (John Cusack) uses a meaningful song to call Diane (Ione Skye) back to him.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Ione Skye plays Diane Court, high-school valedictorian on the verge of heading to England on a prestigious scholarship. This is especially thrilling to Diane's divorced father, James (John Mahoney), who has always shared a special relationship with the girl, less father/daughter than friend/friend. When Diane begins dating irresponsible army brat Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), her father despairs at her choice of an "underachiever." Pressured by her dad to break off the relationship, Diane spends the rest of the summer being pursued by the lovestruck Lloyd, who does everything he can to win her back. Diane finally realizes there's more to life than perfection when her sainted father comes under the scrutiny of the IRS.

+Steven Zore It is because some scenes just become famous. It's not some sort of science, it's just how it is. Take Scarface or Taxi Driver for example. It's either you talking to me? or say hello to my little friend. some scenes just become pop culture and get spread like diseases.

It's obvious why he's doing this, because he's in love. As far as it becoming iconic as Movie Phantom said who knows why this one scene from an otherwise forgotten 80s romantic comedy stuck. In Your Eyes went from a modest hit off of Gabriel's So album to the what it's become now thanks to this scene as well. The song is as much of what drove this to being this hugely iconic and parodied scene.

This was one of the most amazing movies. Loved when she confronted her father about his stealing, how she had chosen him to live with because he had told her she could say anything to him.
It was so a revolutionary concept and still is tell me what you think and and feel without fear of punish, or shame or judgement I will hear you because you matter. Whoa that fight they had when he showed her that he meant " You tell me what I am comfortable hearing about you and your life, you can't tell me what you really think about me I'm still your father."
Just Epic moment of realization of how she had been played by her father, and that he was lying and stealing from his residents and he firmly thought she had no right to be angry and disgusted by his behavior, to silently support him .
Wow it was one the best scene's in film... AWESOME MOVIE!!! Not preachy or making anyone into a cliche just showing the flaws of relationships .

Hmmm What does Your father's naval career have to do with Dennis being a two faced deceiver?
Dennis was a man desperate to salvage something from his marriage , during the divorce he chose a lie to bind his child to him.
He told her " If you pick me You can Say anything, with out fear of reproof, shame or judgement but most important I won't respond that you can't speak your mind, just because I'm your father."
Knowing his daughter he knew she longed for a mutual relationship based on respect and understanding. Instead of resolving to build it he chose to be what he is and was a man determined not to lose any more after his divorce.
He could of accomplished binding her to him by telling her " Look I love you I'm not a perfect man, Mother and I are divorceing because we couldn't make it work, but from this day forward I will strive to be a better father than to you than I was when I was married to your Mother.
I want you in my life I have lost your mother I think will lose you too if you live with mom so here's my offer take it or leave it."
" You can talk to me with respect, I'm your father though treat me with honor for my that.
I'm no shakespeare or Jesus I get angry, I have my pet peeves and biases and yes I'm prejuicded against a lot people it's how I was raised. But I love you child, my daughter I don't want a son I will take all comers to defend you and provide for you.
Please pick me Diane I love you just as much as your mom, I can't change that much but I am stepping out to claim you if you will choose me."
See if he done that their would be no film, but what he did instead was he told his daughter she could tell me anything and he trained her to tell him everything about herself, while keeping her in the dark about who he was and what he was doing until his habits of lying and stealing got him arrested for fraud in the nursing home.
He was your basic I'm not going to expose my vulnerablities to my family so they can know me, No I will tell them what MAKES ME APPEAR GOOD so they think they know me.
Dennis is a guy who doesn't understand how to be emotionally available to the people in his life, then wonders why they freak out over his deceptions and half-truths.
Where is lying to your daughter about who you are and what you do, stealing from your dying elderly clients, while trying to run off a well intentioned honest young man away from your daughter ( so you won't lose her to marriage before she goes to collage) are anything those things motivated by the love of a parent to a child or just a loving but scared controlling person who is too screwed up to make his relationships better through honesty.
He had to tell Diane the truth because of the investigation into the nursing home, when he was bothering her over her testimony that is how she found out he was a thief.
So yes Why would you think your fathers career would be a relevant discussion point to study Dennis's actions in the film?
Do you really believe actions taken by a parent to eliminate people in the child's life who could become more meaningful to the child in the future simply to keep the relationship between parent and child at status quo.
When it's the parent who has difficulty forming and maintaining relationships that are based on mutuality and equality instead of position and previlege?

Karen Lacey Lloyd Dobler is the character played by John Cusack, Diane's father's character name is James Court. Lloyd is the hero of the movie, he's the one who had the courage to ask out Diane in the first place. I'm sorry, you misunderstood what I was saying. I was skipping past the relationship between Diane and her dad James Court and saying my dad the Savior is like Lloyd, risking all of his emotions, his own well being taking a chance trying to be Diane's *boyfriend!* There's a dynamic I see between Lloyd and Diane's dad James Court at the end of the movie where Lloyd is talking to James in prison, and then Diane comes over and talks to her dad. At first only Lloyd would talk to James Court. The point about my dad being in charge of 50,000 military personnel is that I never had any dad issues. My brothers & sister, Joseph, Mary and John & I had the perfect role model in a father. Lloyd was James Court's best friend despite James' attempts to separate him from his daughter. We're on the same page.

Peter Gabriel wasn’t too convinced to let Camerone Crowe use this song for the culmination scene of “Say Anything”, until he saw a rough cut of the movie and was sold. I don’t know how Dianne didn’t run to the window and give Lloyd a break. In any case, I was Lloyd to a degree, lost, emotional, funny but not the smartest guy in the room. It worked out for me and I found my Dianne. I watched this movie over 15 times in the AMC8 theatre in Tacoma, Washington.

Grand romantic gestures and chivalry were jumped by feminism and the word "cringe." They still _exist_ , but I'll be goddamned if those don't get brought up by people insisting they _shouldn't_ . I mean, I doubt I'm the only one who remembers "fight for the one you love" turning into "learn to let them go."
Is there a point where the first sentiment goes overboard and makes a relationship unhealthy? Yes. Is there a point where the _latter_ sentiment goes overboard as well, and instead nukes a relationship from orbit before it learns to even _crawl_ ? _Hell_ yes. I get the impression that at some point in the near future "romance" will be banned because outcriers _insist_ on any possible negative being the only possible outcome.
And boy, would _that_ be a terrible world to live in...

    • @thecalmingwitch
      @thecalmingwitch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Chris Wolff it’s not devastating... it’s beautiful. It signifies his love for her and how ingenious he is to come up with this. Every time I watch this film with someone, they always say something like “oh, I thought she’d run out to see him,” something along those lines. But that wasn’t the point of this scene. The point was, previous to this scene Lloyd was doing everything he could to get Diane back. Contacting her in every way he could, and her seeing him psychically or hearing him or feeling his presence didn’t help. It pushed her away even more. So what he did was he thought of a way to get inside Diane’s head in a pleasant way without actually “doing” anything to her. He played the song outside her window so that in her point of view, the song was coincidentally playing, reminding her of the night the two spent together. It was the most romantic thing I ever saw on screen to date.

Cusak didn't wanna do the scene and fought Crowe about doing it for the entire film shoot. Finally, it was the last day of filming and they were by some park and it was getting dark. Crowe convinced Cusak to do the scene with that last bit of light. Hence the location that doesn't make too much sense.
