Why Say Anything's Boombox Scene Is Amazing

  • We’ve all seen the iconic scene from the Say Anything and all the homages and parodies of it. But there’s a lot more going on in the scene than meets the eye. So much so that, beyond all the surface level references, people have kind of forgotten about what lies beneath. So what’s the story behind this classic scene?

    Met a college bound girl right after high school in 83. I was directionless, she was studious. She went to college, I went into the Air Force. We worked the long distance thing for a few years, getting together whenever we could. When we watched this movie we kept looking at each other sideways. In 1994 “In Your Eyes” became our wedding song. She’s in the other room right now and I’m waiting for he to come watch some TV with me.

    Say Anything was the culmination of 80's teen movies. The boombox scene closed out a decade with passion. It was symbolic for a lot of reasons.

    "nobody thought they belonged together" One scene that has stuck with me forever is when she says something to the effect of "everyone says this will never work" and Lloyd immediately fires back with "Do you realize that you have just described every great success story?" Something like that, my memory gets a bit spotty now and again. Still waiting for a situation where some girl says that to me and I can use his line. Ha! ; )

    I grew up in Indiana and this was always my favorite romantic movie because it wasn’t your typical Romcom. Fast forward, I ended up living across the street from this park where this scene was filmed. Your breakdown of this scene and the importance of it struck such a cord with me, especially as someone who had worked in film and tv for years. Thank you so much for expressing what I feel which I couldn’t put into words.

    I think I love the scene in the car just just the tiniest bit more than this one. It was just so romantic with Lloyd shaking and In Your Eyes playing. That really got to me as a teenage girl. Edit: I completely agree with your analysis. Diane was still in love with Lloyd and he wasn't doing this to win her back or guilt her. It really was a reminder to her of what they had, and that it was worth fighting for. She just needed to be brave and stand up for the relationship with him.

    You didn't bring up the thing that bothers me most about how this scene is interpreted, or misinterpreted. Everyone says Lloyd is standing outside Diane"s bedroom window, but he's clearly in the park near her house. He's not trespassing and the scene is much less aggressive and stalkery in its actual context. I hate when it's used as an example of stalking and toxic relationships since I feel this film shows one of healthiest teen relationships, with Lloyd being respectful and supportive of Diane, and the two of them bringing out the best in each other.

    • @EverydayTape
      @EverydayTape  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I didn’t get around to talking about that part but I did initially. I cut that information out of the final cut so I could keep the focus on the central point. But I agree, if the scene is being talked about in the context of toxicity, then that’s way off mark.

    • @janleonard3101
      @janleonard3101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@EverydayTape I've seen videos about toxic tropes in romance on channels like The Take and Pop Culture Detective which includes it in a video called "Stalking for Love". IMO Edward Cullen and Lloyd Dobler should not be in the same category. I really love this movie so it annoys me that everyone thinks Lloyd was outside the window.
      It's interesting that, according to the behind the scenes info you showed, they almost filmed it like that. Thank goodness they didn't because it really changes how intrusive it is. I always read his expression as angst rather than defiance. For me it's an expression of just how much pain he was feeling.
      Anyway, I enjoyed your take on this film. It's nice to see someone talking about it more in depth. :)

    • @Aster_Risk
      @Aster_Risk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@janleonard3101 I'm glad you commented about this. The boombox scene is lumped in with a lot of really messed up stuff, and it's as if people haven't seen the film or remembered it incorrectly. Lloyd was actually a good and the relationship in this film really was much more healthy than a lot of adult relationships.

      I’m surprised by the story about a different selection for the song. Did they already select in your eyes for the love scene in the car? I would think it the obvious choice if it had already been selected for the car scene. I mean it is just so obvious because it ties the boom box scene with the car scene to the intensity this love flows. I would love to know if anyone knows if in filming that they really just sort of came up with in your eyes for the boom box scene and if they did just sort of came up with it then how did it affect the filming of the car scene. I don’t see how one could select another song if this song had already been decided upon for either of these scenes. Yeah. I love this movie.

    • @janleonard3101
      @janleonard3101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@lookslikekevin There's an interview with Cameron Crowe in Entertainment Weekly where he says the song that was on his mind as he wrote the scene was “To Be A Lover” by Billy Idol. He says they tried a number of songs but "In Your Eyes" was the only one that worked for the scene.
      So there you have it and I love the movie too. 😊

    Ione Skye's character introduces the song earlier in the movie and asks Lloyd to listen and exclaims how beautiful the song is, that she love's it. I always thought that's why he played that particular song on a boom box. To show that he heard her and would acknowledge her. And so she would know he was out there. So, I'm really surprised they originally had another song in mind for this scene. The must have backed into the connection. Or maybe substituted the same song in the earlier scene after the fact.

At first I thought it was a bit hubristic on your part - the subtleties of the difference between reminding someone that you love them - or even that they love you (um… no) - and reminding someone that you have something together that’s unique and worth fighting for, worth committing to, is really really important. Much more than my sleep addled brain caught several hours ago. Fascinating that they didn’t know that they were going for… and then you’re pointing out why it worked - Golden. Learned something pretty awesome today. Thanks

    So on the alternate take special feature you referenced it showed the following: for Ione Sky's shots they played Tokyo Storm Warning by Elvis Costello on set while filming. That's the song she's reacting to. On nearly all the other takes with John the song is Turn the Other Way by Fishbone, which is apparently his vote for what the song should have been. For the footage of the final take they show though the song is Simon Says the Kingpin by Fishbone. So this means Cusack was playing the cassette of the album In Your Face and for the final take just let it play instead of rewinding back since there is one song between Turn the Other Way and Simon Says the Kingpin. th-cam.com/video/_kBd8x-xSGE/w-d-xo.htmlm34s

      Other trivia: the song To Be a Lover by Billy Idol inspired the scene in the first place and Cameron Crowe thought he may have written in the script that it was the song Lloyd was playing. However in the shooting script dated 1/18/88 both the car scene and the boombox scene mention "Emotional Love" by Crowe's then wife Nancy Wilson. I can't find that song online unless it became "All For Love" which did make the soundtrack, just not in those scenes.
      After it was filmed they couldn't figure out what the song should be for the longest time until Crowe was re-listening to a mixed tape made for his wedding and In Your Eyes was on it.
      Getting Peter Gabriel to let them use it is another story and worth Googling.

I have to agree with out a back story to it, one does wonder "Why did some one follow a girl home just to play a boom box on her lawn and how is this romantic? It falls in to that category of things every one memes but no one's seen. Many of us having been to young to relate to a romance film. Its right up there with Risky Business, The Graduate, Fast Times at Rigmond High, The Breakfast Club , Flash Dance, Mommy Dearest , Clock Work Orange, Reiver Dogs, Warriers, Apocalypse Now, in that list of things that every one memes but that has zero interest to a young child of the 80s who was way more in to Star Wars, Ghostbusters, He-Man, ALF, Transformers, Ninja Turtles. We had no time for no way to relate to movies about love and kissing and stuff.

    Remarkable how you've failed to even mention the most powerful thing about the scene... Peter Gabriel's masterpiece "In Your Eyes". Truly one the most beautiful loves songs ever written that can bring tears to the eyes of even the most jaded.

    I think those 2 characters Lloyd and Diane, really deserves a sequel. We need to know how they broke up in England, what happened after Mr Court was realesed from jail, now probably LLoyd is a widower and Diane is divorced, they meet again in this high school reunion after all those years and they felt they deserved another chance. Some shit like that.

No women wants a man to stand outside their window playing lovesongs,, this only works in the Movies , men believe this type of stalker bullshit is what women want... then get friendzoned or a restraining order in real life....women do most of the pursuing,,, All men have to do is play it cool and let the women chase.... , this is how they are wired,,
