Catherine Tate did an amazing job in this scene playing the Doctor Donna. She mixed in the Doctor's smarts with Donna's personality. But what makes this scene is the hand version of the Doctor where Tenant mixed his Doctor with some of Donna's personality tweaks to really sell that the blending was mutual. But it really shows that the gender of the Doctor doesn't matter if the writing is there to support it.
that's the main part, though, innit. the writing has to be there to support it. jodie's been doing a banger job so far but like. there are no callbacks, no signs, nothing whatsoever to indicate she's the same person as capaldi and smith and tennant and eccleston played. unfortunate, really

It's writing that prioritized the show, its lore and its continuity that made Donna's evolution work. The 2008 showrunner made no attempt to ruin or disintegrate the canon, by converting the show into a man-bashing drama and smashing to bits the entire history of the time lords. Fans have rejected the 2018 Who because the show shifted into prioritizing agenda, not just flipping gender.
You pegged it right on the nose the problem has always been the writing the only reason the last episode of Jodie Whittaker's era is even worth watching is because of these great actors from previous years gone by making it work literally pulling it together they aren't flaws there are problems but they pull it together and they make you literally not pay attention to those details that's how good it is I mean seriously you see Graham looking at Ace and you get the impression those two are going to go out on a date someday. And it's good only reason it's good it's because of the actors involved they are able to pull to pull off a really good send-off because in all practical purposes chibnals writing really really was a problem he did not know how to write for a woman or for a character that is supposed to be a woman but with certain shall we say man sense so she does a lot of mansplaining in this last episode she doesn't do that in harkens back to the old era and I think that's what makes it good certainly not as good as this but definitely I'd have given it a b+ rating bordering on an a- this is absolute a plus plus there's no higher grade. You have all the best people there the people who no matter how bad the script is they can literally managed to pull it off and that's rare.
The episode where the Daleks are treated like jokes is considered one of the best finales??? How??? This episode is meh. The only good thing was The Doctor and Donna's final scene
I miss this era everyday. David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, John Barrowman, the return of Elisabeth Sladen... this was definitely the golden years of New Who. Though I'm very excited to finally see this new era too!

Catherine Tate did some quality work here, but I have to give huge kudos to Tennant also. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure in this scene that the legit Doctor works out almost immediately what's going to happen to Donna, whereas meta-crisis Doctor is too caught up in the moment (too human, maybe). So you watch their reactions and the meta-crisis Doctor is so excited and mirroring Donna, while legit Doctor is sort of watching with a sad smile, happy for what is happening but so very sad for what must come after. Tennant had to play the whole scene, twice, from two very different perspectives, and they both feel extremely genuine and suitable.
No, it's a meme people think they're being cute in saying; I've seen the exact same set up (there above in quotation marks) on a video where Mr. Rogers visited Sesame Street. My favourite Series finale might actually be the most recent one, The Doctor Falls. Not the greatest episode of all time, and not as good as the first part, but it's pretty good for the most part. I also have a soft spot for Doomsday, which is the first Doctor Who story I remember seeing. EDIT: I also like a lot of Classic Season finales. Survival, the War Games, Greatest Show in the Galaxy, the Horns of Nimon (Soldeed makes that story. #BringBackSoldeed!), Inferno, the Time Meddler, Planet of the Spiders, the Green Death. Yeah, many a good Classic finale.
Seriously though, among my season finale faves are: The War Games, Seeds of Doom, Survival, and Waters of Mars (yes that counts, The End of Time is technically a Christmas thingee).
Its amazing how both River and Donna. One a natural hybrid and the other by accident and temporary are both extremely goofy and just excited to be there.

Donna being the DoctorDonna was a significant factor in me wanting to one day see a woman playing the Doctor. Nine years later and it's happening! Also, Catherine Tate is nailing that impression of Tennant's Doctor. It's brilliant, and I wish we could've had more of that.

I see from your recent comments that you aren't happy with Chibnall's writing, but there's nothing in my comment that suggests I was expecting excellent writing or that the Doctor being played by a woman automatically makes things 'good'. Though if you want to talk about quality of writing: given Chibnall is writing the same things 19-year old self from 11 years ago planned to write as fanfic, I'm not terribly impressed thus far at his grand plot and think that Whittaker isn't being served as well as she should by the writing. (I won't say any more in the comments of the official TH-cam channel, partly because I don't think it will do any good, and partly because I would rather spend my time writing debatably better fanfic.)

Journey's End was the best Special they did so far. Story was amazing and the amount of Characters revisiting the Show was brilliant. Also Doctor Donna was so amazing she deserved her own Show or atleast more screentime. Best example how to write a female Doctor, sadly Chibnall didnt took notes.
One thing I don't really like about the new series is how they made the companion so damned important. You can be an awesome character without being the greatest person who has ever lived (until your title is taken by the next companion). Rose - absorbed the time vortex, wiped out the Daleks, made Jack immortal while the Doctor mucked around Martha - walked the Earth for a year, rallied the entire planet while the Doctor sat in a cage Donna - became half timelord, helped created a Doctor clone while the Doctor stood in a spotlight Amy - wished the Doctor back into existence Clara - Apparently helped all incarnations of the Doctor in various ways, including telling him which Tardis to take
I do agree with your point. On the other hand, Bill Potts was the only companion in the modern Doctor Who era who wasn't the focus of the Whoniverse. She had the most tragic destiny by becoming the first Mondasian Cyberman and literally dying. One thing was annoying about her character and I blame that on Moffat: she have one punch line 'I am not interested in men'. Still, Donna Noble is my favorite companion: she wasn't gushing over the Doctor, and she was sassy and kind at the same time. I never stop thinking what would've become of this show if she was continuing to be 'Doctor Donna' for at least another season.

Another great example of RTD's ability to tug at the heartstrings; at this point Ten was surrounded by every companion and even a new twin brother, 10 minutes later he's alone in the TARDIS with Donna gone forever.
The Doctor himself is just a part-timelord (as 8th Doctor said)! So, according to this Episode, there should be literally no difference between Doctor Donna and the actual Doctor... that's a sin ;-)
The best we have is to watch for fanfiction about him. There's some relatively good stuff out there online, though there's some really crappy stuff, too (depends on whether you just want romance with Rose in the story, or whether you want actual adventures!).
