I met Tom Baker at a convention in Boston back in 1983. There was a meet and greet with him afterwards. I was the last person in line. One would figure the person is tired, wants to go back to the hotel or something. Not Tom. We sat and spoke for close to an hour talking about many of the episodes, production stories and so forth. He was a wonderful, charming man, very generous of his time (then again, what's time to a Time Lord?)) )

Jon Pertwee was my first Doctor. He opened the door for me, giving me a taste of what was to come. But it was Tom Baker who brought me inside, sat me down on the sofa, let me kick my shoes off and take in all of the craziness that was part and parcel of his era.
And hide behind the sofa 😂
Unfortunately i didnt get around to the original series... But Tennant sold me as a true Whovian.
@markvonschlegell4953 Jon was amazing as the Doctor. I particularly enjoyed the partnership with UNIT, The Brigadier, Sergeant Benton, Captain Yates, etc....and of course the clashes with the Master!

The Fourth Doctor is undoubtedly the most iconic Doctor there has, is, and ever will be. Everyone recognises that scarf.
It took ages to knit a copy.
@reiganscott-palframan7281 God yeah! I don't think they were told how long the scarf needs to be. Just shows that some of the best things aren't intentional.
Still the longest running tenure as the character for seven years. Which is probably also why he doesn't often revisit the role since he did it for so long. He wore out that costume.
I certainly do as I have a Fourth Doctor scarf.

In 2006, I watched Genesis of the Daleks for the first time on DVD, a few days after my 10th birthday. And I immediately fell in love with Tom Baker's portrayal of the Fourth Doctor. Here's to 50 years!
Genesis of the Daleks was the first classic who story I saw in DVD in 2006 as well, he’s my fav doctor as well.

Snd everyone overlooks the fact it’s one of the first times the show goes against what it’s always done. In most classic who you have the docto aiding one group of good aliens against a group of bad aliens. But in genesis neither side is good. The thal are as evil as the kaleds. It’s just perfect

Doctor Who would air at a strange time on Canadian Television back then - back when there were only a few stations - that also didn't broadcast 24-hrs/day. I remember waking up at 5:10am just to hear that intro and chew cereal while that scarf-trippin Hippy & Companion would stumble through the Galaxy... Respect
Robot Part One went out 28 December 1974, which was a strange date to start a new season.
I watch it being broadcasted into Detroit in the 70s from Canada.
Came on TVO in the evening along with that movie show with Elwy Yost.
Let alone being the best Doctor, the man was the best dressed Doctor out of all of them! I loved every costume & make-up every set design, every special effect of 4th the Doctor series. How can one forget the "Mandragora Helix" or Leela's leather skin attire with matching knife shaeths! love it and remember it all. Thank-You ABC TV Australia.
Tom Baker was amazing as The Doctor! I had seen him in several movies before they started to broadcast Doctor Who in the USA in the 80s. And already knew he was one to watch from the movies. But when Doctor Who began to air here, that is how I became a lifelong fan! His talent, his manor of ortary, his humor, his wit and skill at improvisation, even his body language. Very very impressive! The Fourth Doctor is LEGEND! Forever more. :)

Tom Baker was my introduction into the Whoniverse, back in the '80s; and I still consider him a benchmark against whom all other Doctors are measured.
He had a way of delivering a throwaway line that I find masterful (no pun intended)...
Tom Baker is, was and will always be the BEST Doctor.

I found out about this show because a band I was falling in love with was inspired by it. Without knowing anything other than a dude who travels space and time, I watched it. I was hooked! Tom Baker was 1st The Doctor I ever saw. Maybe it makes me bias but he's still my fave.

Tom Baker played the Doctor when I discovered Doctor Who. He’s my beloved Doctor. Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant reignited my enthusiasm for Doctor Who. Happy to be back in the ‘Whoniverse’. ❤️❤️
Both Baker and Tennant have that edge. They seem the clown but let you glimpse the genius underneath. Then you realize the Doctor's brain is always running he is 2 steps ahead of everyone.

You see, all the others are "a" Doctor, but this is THE Doctor, the definite article unquestionably.
Interesting bit of trivia: The Horror of Fang Rock 46:59 was based on the true incident of the three lighthouse keepers of Flannan Isle who mysteriously went missing in 1900; to this day no one really knows what happened to them. The Doctor quotes from Wilfred Gibson's 1912 poem Flannan Isle as they get into the TARDIS to leave.
Tom is the GOAT. He will always be what comes to mind when I remember how great the show USED to be.

I grew up with Jon Pertwee as The Doctor, and this was in the day when Dr. Who was a prime topic in the schoolyard.
At the close of the giant spider story when the Pertwee Doctor returned from Metebelis Three and collapsed, then transformed into some guy much younger with dark curly hair, it was like waking up to find you had different parents. I was resolutely determined that i wasn't going to like this fellow. That he was an imposter.
But in the first few minutes of his first episode as The Doctor, Baker won me over.
He had charm, he had wit, he had a combination of adult moral guide and mischievous child.
Oh, and he had impeccable dress-sense!
I love the scene when he becomes outraged and angry at the Pirate Captain. The Fourth Doctor truly shows how appalled he is towards the villainy of the Captain about the destruction of other planets. Great and serious acting from Tom Baker.

There have been some amazing Doctors, classic and new, but Tom is the absolute GOAT. I think the Universe will shake when he passes, and I'll never be ready for that day no matter how old I get. Tom Baker was MY Doctor. As an American, his was the first time I’d been made aware of the show, and his was the one who made the biggest impression on me. Ever since Robot, I was HOOKED. to this day, however, Face of Evil and the introduction of Leela was perhaps my favorite episode - perfect mix of humor, one liners (“Well, Hel-lo, Neeva! Hotline to God?!”) (“The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views, which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering “) and a fascinating plot.

Watch and listen to Tom Baker being interviewed. Many videos exist of that online. Regardless of his incredible portrayal of Who, Baker is a fascinating wit, intellect and human being.
So many we have now lost. Our dear, dear Elizabeth Sladen. Mary Tamm. And Tom himself is getting on. Yet all my beloved Doctors and companions live on in my heart, reminding me how to be brave when I need it. How to face the demons.

For me the the Doctor that I started with was the 10th, then I saw the special where the 10th Doctor meets the 5th Doctor, then from there, I got into 4th Doctor serials
