  • Today we're learning about 25 signs about family and clarifications. This is part 6 in our series 150 Essential Signs. We feel like these 150 signs are must know signs that you'll need to carry on a basic conversation with a deaf person. Learn these signs and you're well on your way to knowing American Sign Language. Watch all the way to the end of the video where we go over some basic sentences and phrases.
Use the chapter markers to navigate to a specific word.
150 signs is a lot of signs, but I promise, you can do it! We're breaking these videos down to 6 bite size videos where we'll spend a good amount of time with each word. By the end of this series you should be able to carry on a basic conversation with a deaf person. How cool is that!

I work in customer service, and I recently started learning to sign so I can have a more personal interaction with our deaf customers. I’ve watched so many videos, but yours are the simplest and easiest to understand! You have such a great teaching style, and I so appreciate Your little tidbits to explain why a sign is what it is. That really helps me remember it!

Heya, I'm not deaf but I'm partially mute and I've been trying to learn ASL to better communicate with friends or when I meet new people. Your videos are pretty helpful, I've only just started learning and I'm getting the hang of it quicker than I thought. Thanks for putting out these videos, you're a great teacher!

    • @unknown-ct3kj

@@priscillajimenez27 It's officially called selective mutism, it's a kind of anxiety disorder meaning I can lose the ability to speak in social situations or when I'm stressed and overwhelmed. hope this helped clear it up!

It's been three moths now and because of your videos My mom and I video chat three times a week. It is amazing and such a blessing!! that I found your channel. Meredith, Thank you so much for All your teaching videos! It’s like your Ministry to be helping teach people how to be able to communicate with the deaf. Last summer when I went back home to Va. for a visit..my best friend shared with me that God revealed to her that I was suppose to learn sign language, I was very surprised to say the least..when I got back here in Texas I found you online..You are my favorite teacher! I really like the way you categorize your teachings! Your husband does a great job in his part of it all! I actually prayed & asked God for confirmation about doing this signing..I’ve had two dreams where I saw myself signing to people so I’m really working more with your teachings and as soon as I’ve learned all your sessions here on You Tube I will be signing up for skillshare! I really appreciate all your work you’ve done to help teach so many people online that you don’t even know! You’re a Huge Blessing! Oh and your children are incredibly Precious!

I was able to see all the 6 videos. There is enough material to play for many weeks.
I am getting the help of my 9 years old son. We are from Venezuela, we speak Spanish. Together we have learned English or at least a bit of it, we are learning Italian and he wanted to know about ASL. So, where we are taking the very firsts steps.
Thank you very much for this very hard work. I know how hard is to produce a video. Greetings to the team, I know you are somewhere around.
I hope to see this channel at the top ten. And why not, your own tv show.

I'm hearing and found your videos only recently after I have been learning German Sign Language (DGS) for some months now. Thank you so much for teaching ASL, this beautiful language in this easy and delightful way. How ever, I've come accross some deaf people in the US and Germany criticising hearing Sign Language tutors, saying Sign Languages schould only be tought by deaf tutors. I am a language teacher myself (spoken languages German, Spanish, Persian) and understand that point of view, especially because of the power balance between hearing and deaf people in society. It would be very interesting to learn your POV on this delicate topic. Again thank you so much for doing this - You help me a lot. Greetings from Berlin, Germany

My girlfriend is taking a college ASL course online because she works in childcare and wants to be able to sign if a child needs it. I've got to say, these videos are far clearer and more informative than the videos made for the course. I think most teachers who are used to classrooms have no clue how to make learning videos. Watching these is like a breath of fresh air comparatively.

Finally made it to the end of this playlist! I started the first 4 videos back in June when I started learning ASL basics, but then I got caught up in watching more of your other videos all because I paused and thought it would be fun to learn 4th of July holiday signs (it was right around the corner), so I searched "4th of July ASL", and your channel popped up again! From there I went exploring your other videos and I have been hooked ever since! I continued to practice from you in that time, and 3 months later, I was back to this playlist! I also just watched your Halloween signs for more fun learning in between the serious learning. I'm learning so fast, really enjoy your teaching methods, and certainly your tips for remembering. Thank you for sharing! I work at a museum in south Texas and love passing on what I've learned with my coworkers. Thank you for giving me, them, and our deaf community an opportunity to connect!

Just binged this series for a refresher on ASL. Overall, fantastic job and truly did brush off those cobwebs. You do well with explaining, speed, and clarity of voice.
Only critique I have is that when you sign the sentences at the end of the vids, you don't seem to have consistent syntax. Most are ordered subject - verb - object - subject and some are object - subject - verb. You do well at explaining what you're signing when, but newer folks to ASL might find sentence structure a bit confusing without consistency.

These videos are great! Manageable chunks to work on each day, and the list in the description is handy for coming back later and testing myself or refreshing if I forget! I'm hooked!
Very small gripe: I view the bonus content at the end to be a relaxed quiz of sorts, so it would be nice if "name", "son", and "daughter" were in the initial lesson. (or one of the first 5) Like i said, VERY small gripe. Carry on!

I would look at sentence structure and grammar in general. Then keep adding to your vocabulary. You'll find teachings on more than 1000 signs. Think of our videos as sign categories. Sure, you'll see some repeated signs, but there is a lot there. Once you feel like you have retained 50 signs or so, know your alphabet and numbers 1 - 30 you're more than qualified to sign up for a course.

That is not the sign for DOG. The way you do it looks almost inappropriate. Your fingers snap either audibly or quietly they don't do a "23" motion. It's also a bit lexicalized D-G.
