  • Today we're learning about 25 signs about time and questions. This is part 5 in our series 150 Essential Signs. We feel like these 150 signs are must know signs that you'll need to carry on a basic conversation with a deaf person. Learn these signs and you're well on your way to know American Sign Language. Watch all the way to the end of the video where we go over some basic sentences and phrases.
    Use the chapter markers to navigate to a specific word.
    150 signs is a lot of signs, but I promise, you can do it! We're breaking these videos down to 6 bite size videos where we'll spend a good amount of time with each word. By the end of this series you should be able to carry on a basic conversation with a deaf person. How cool is that!

    I thank God for your channel!! Even though my first langauge is Spanish. I do speak English. Now trying to learn basic ASL. I’m profoundly deaf now and trying to cope with having lost all my hearing during this year 2022. Used hearing aids but now they don’t help me at all. Your channel gives me hope because I’m learning

    I've never truly been able to retain the ASL language until I started watching your videos! My friends and I use ASL to communicate when we are too far apart to talk! And I love talking with my hands, at least now I'm using a language now instead of random hand movements! 😂

    Thank you so much for this and all your videos, they are amazing and have helped me immensely to start learning ASL! I'm curious why - when we ask 'How much time do you need?' - the sign doesn't include the 'you' preceding and ending as some other questions do? Maybe a good engagement that's already in one of your videos I'm yet to watch!

    When asking, how do they know if you're referring to them or someone else since I didn't see pointing to another person like when asking what time do you need?

    • @LearnHowtoSign
      @LearnHowtoSign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If there is no pointing, then it would be assumed that the person who you are talking to is who you are asking.

    I'm confused about something. At 2:45, you explain that in ASL, time starts the sentence. However, at 6:14, you sign "I arrive home 9 time I" (similar to PSE syntax) instead of "9 time home arrive I" (ASL syntax).

    • @eel_grrrl
      @eel_grrrl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’m confused too

    • @RaveScratch
      @RaveScratch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know this was a while back; however, I think "general time" statements, such as "future" or "past" start the sentence; however, "specific time," such as "9:00," are used after the verb they are describing. Though, I'm not entirely sure as I'm learning myself.

    I have a question. In the numbers video, our hand is facing us (the signer), but here when giving the time, the hand is facing away. Is this the norm when telling time to someone else? Thank you! :)

    • @LearnHowtoSign
      @LearnHowtoSign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question, when incorporating a number into the sign the number will flip. The rules is 1-5 faces towards you when it is sign independently. Hope this helps.

  • @carterstanton3540
    @carterstanton3540 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am a little bit confused by how you make a sentence in the past or future tense. Initially, I thought you would do the sign for “past” or “future” at the beginning of the sentence but it looked like you made your sign extend forward more instead of actually signing future itself. There are not many videos using the past and future tenses so I am a little confused on how to use them properly 😅

    Weird question. Would the same signs work if we are using these wh words in sentences that aren't questions? like for example "I don't know WHAT im doing" or "I don't know HOW to explain it"

    • @GB6__YT
      @GB6__YT ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m pretty sure in those sentences, the words are unnecessary. You’d probably sign something like “I don’t understand do I” for the first one

  • @MicheleoTuTo

    May I ask you if the sign ARRIVE you do is from a specific region? Because to me it looks like ALL, and I've always seen ARRIVE with the dominant hand moving from the shoulder directly to the non-dominant (but I'm hearing and Italian, so really not an expert)

    • @LearnHowtoSign
      @LearnHowtoSign  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Great question!
      ARRIVE vs ALL is very similar.
      ARRIVE does a partial twist arriving to the non-dominate
      ALL does a full circle around the non-dominate hand
      Hope this helps!

  • @nicoledarling8388

    Most of these signs are correct but you honestly need to have a deaf person checking your videos.
    The first who was correct and the second one was not. Nobody signs arrive! It’s actually more confusing in sign because it looks like “all”. Instead it’s important to set the sentence and concept up where you just say home or home+here. Signing has a style for sure but make sure you actually ask deaf people about there only language.
    Overall a clear video to help beginners.
