My piano teacher always told me: Never practice fast. Only practice right. And in time your brain will handle speed all on its own. When you attempt to practice fast, you’ll sabotage yourself, as you’ll literally be training your mistakes into your muscle memory.
For this reason she always insisted that I practice any given musical selection from start to finish at the speed with which I was comfortable performing its most challenging part. And she was absolutely right! It was often difficult to maintain that level of self discipline, however, within a few weeks (or months, for more difficult pieces) of holding steadfast to her advice, I would find it easier and easier to bring the entire song up to tempo.
Although I learned this technique in a hearing context, I believe it can still be helpful with learning the alphabet in ASL. Don’t try to master rapid fingerspelling. Instead simply practice slow and steady while allowing your brain, in time, to increase speed and fluidity all on its own.
LOVE THIS!
I loved what you piano teacher told you!!!
Fun thing, my martial arts teacher said the same thing to me tonight. "Technique first, your brain will speed it up on its own." :)
This true however saying the word “right” when you mean “correct” is confusing for left handed people that are focusing on learning to use the correct hand. Typical people don’t say the word “left” when they mean wrong or incorrect. Signing uses a persons dominant hand. When I am practicing and speaking via ASL I use my left hand. My dominant hand. If you say “right” to me to at any time I think naturally that you mean my right hand. You confuse my brains fluid motion…. So important just like fluid motion when you are playing your piano proficiently.
While I'm right hand dominant, I'm missing half of my right thumb, therefore I finger spell with my left hand.
I’m sorry about your thumb!!
Did you lose is in a hay baler? That how my uncle lost Margot of his thumb.
Makes sense. Sorry about your thumb.
Thank you for reminding me, "Where there's a will, there's a way."
So jealous. The only finger I have on my right hand is my thumb, so I'm left-hand dominant.
Being a beginner, I find running the video at 0.5 or 0.75 playback speed helpful. I hope to speed things up as a progress.
Yes! I do love the speed control feature. This is a great tip. Thanks for sharing.
Wish I could read other signers finger spelling as easily as I can finger spell myself.
Thank you so much my classmate is deaf and I wanna communicate
I struggled with "g" but I found thinking about holding a "tea" cup put my fingers in the right spot :))
Whatever it takes! Glad you cracked the code in your brain 😀
yes ty for posting this...I got the urge to learn
Great tip!
This actually works was also struggling till I saw this ✨
@@tiffanymiji I'm happy it helped ☺
Who else is learning this after or while watching Twinkling Watermelon?
Dude same
same same 😭
I knew most of them but after watching this I know them all, thank you!! Took about 5-10mins of practice but I got it 😊
wow, and just like that I know the sign alphabet off by heart(with a few moments where i have to think for a moment) but if I practice every day, I'll be flying through the alphabet and finally have a means of communicating with family members at reunions. Thank you!
You read my mind. I was just thinking about this as I prepared to take my ASL class today 😊
I hope it helps!
It really helps
Thank u
Great love it
I use ASL with my girl as a baby so there was never a moment I could not communicate with her and we still use it now.
Thanks for this great videos
My goal is to be able to sign my husbands sermons for our TH-cam videos.
Started learning ASL because I found your channel..thank you
Thank you for this. I am a trainer for a warehouse and we have someone who is hard of hearing and needs an interpreter. This is great for me to understand and be friends with her. So excited.
this is so sweet 😢

Tip #3 is PRICELESS!!! 💎💎💎
This was an excellent video for someone who learned the alphabet in like 1st grade (almost 30 years ago) and hasn't used it since. I actually remembered roughly 75% of it! Thanks for helping me relearn the rest!
You ma'am are an inspiration! Thank you for helping people with hearing disabilities an easing the anxiety of learning something you are unfamiliar with! I am deaf in one ear and have hearing loss in my other ear. So I really appreciate being able to learn! It actually very exciting the way you teach! Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving!
the tutorial is super helpful and easy to follow. I learned all of them just by one watch. Then i just practice on my own to strengthen the memory. thank you
You are an amazing ASL teacher. I learned all alphabets after watching this. Thank you.
You're doing an amazing job :)
I'm glad you're feeling better 🫂 and thank you in advance! 😀🙏🏾
Thank you!!
@@LearnHowtoSign - Thank YOU! 🤗
Teaching my 8month old sign language has been fun. He’s already signing more food and outside. Our 3 year old has been learning to and he’s already understanding why it’s important. So cool to see them practice together
This is amazing due to throat cancer I im no longer able to talk due to on tracheanotmy this past January. Meredith
U are awesome as I cope with a disability.my work and most ppl don't understand as they focus on blind and deaf which I'd great
You are an amazing ASL Teacher I have learnt all the alphabet after watching this video
Thank you Meredith. Just starting to learn ASL and this was fun and helpful.
I LOVED this lesson, will repeat tomorow!
wow thank you thank you!! I have a prospect who communicate with ASL so I was thinking to learn some. This video is absolutely amazing. Really learn fast with your clear instructions!
This is soooo helpful! Thank you! Im ambidextrous in everything except writing and find myself practicing ASL with both hands.
I'm picking this up again after so long, I'm enjoying it so much. I used to know the ABCs and the song as well but I didn't retain it, however I learned it so young at the time I picked up the alphabet easy, at 35 now it's harder, but it's fun!
Excellent video, been wanting to learn the basics and this made it very clear, TY.
Thanks for making it simple and easy!
You are a great teacher. I am learning it and loving it. Thank you much Happy New Year!

Great lesson.i am really happy I have learned a lot
i really like how you teach thank you
Thank you the making this sign
Hello Meredith, In past videos you signed LIKE, COMMENT, and SUBSCRIBE. You might want to sign those words at the end of every video.
This video is incredible! I'm sure there are other ways to learn how to fingerspell, but I've tried to learn how off and on for years, and nothing ever stuff. Yet, here I am, able to spell some words. Question is whether it'll stick after a few days, but for now, at least, I feel like I'm a little better able to communicate with people who aren't always able to communicate with others outside of their community.
LOVE THIS!
ty for this tut, i can use to it communicate with my deaf classmate
It's late at night and I want to go to bed so I set the video to play at 2x the speed. My hand is sore but I kept up! Ha ha
Eager to learn and following from Malawi
thank you so much this video helped me learn sign in 4 days I wanted to learn cause i got a crush on a girl at work and i wanted to learn sign for her hope it goes well next time i see her :)
Thankyou...Nice teacher...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤...
Wow I actually managed to learn super fast
I am not handicapped nor I know someone who is
But still don't know why I have this feeling that someday It would help someone ❤
Same i just got the sudden urge to learn! though i find it very fun :)
pov: you have small fingers.
i was suffering making the letters M, N, R and S T^T but thank you so much for making it so easy!
Im Australian so I'm learning Auslan. Our alphabet is with two hsnds, but i like learning asl too
Im joining asl club!😊
Do I need to change the direction of some signs as a left handed person? For example, you do J to your left (or inside) so should I do it to my left aswell? I'm a bit confused.
The "J" does still go inside. In some ways those who are left handed have an advantage watching our videos because you don't have to mirror it in your head, you can align your left hand with my right and follow along.
Thank you!!!!
can you do a video explaining ordinal numbers and the rule of 9?

She already has a video for The Rule of 9. I don't know how to put the link here, but it shows in the search bar.

@@gardeniagirl1374 okay I'll search. Thank you
Besides being very hard of hearing I am left handed and graphically dyslexic. That is to say that I willingly see the opposite (obverse) of what others only can see straight on. I watch your image off to one side ( not looking straight at you) and see a predictable rhythmic pattern in my minds eye. It’s like music and like songs that I know I can play the ASL alphabet in my minds eye. This works for others learning one component after another. It becomes intuitively predictable. Practice A to B to C etc. fluidly then when becoming adept at this one can start stop start at any mid point without missing a letter or having to micro pause. Pretty cool huh?
When moving from one letter to another are you okay with returning my hand to a neutral position then going to the next letter or should we focus on fluid forward motion? Kinda like changing chords on a guitar.
thankyou
You cant tell me ish now! I am way too excited I learned the alphabets
Good job💐
Well that was easy. Now let's see how many months it'll take to be an expert. Thanks
We always to this in are class
I'm right handed but it's easier to use my left t sign. I actually use both hands regularly
Need more practice to learn the alphabet but atleast i can sign my own name ❤❤❤
I'm from Scotland I interested in learning more I don't have anyone to practice with I perfer one handed than the British version as you need two hands for the alphabet
I am drawing the hand signals and im gonna put them on my bedroom wall so I can remeber the alphabet!!
I have a question about the letter j. Does your whole hand move? Can you just move it from the wrist up, or it doesn't even matter
Awesome
Is it necessary to put your eyebrows down when asking "Wh-" questions?
I know BSL fingerspelling and wanna learn ASL fingerspelling
I trained in makaton but I love how asl fingers pulling looks
Letters learn i will keep coming back to make sure it sticks to my head
8:25 the one piece reference XD
I'm born from springfield missouri!
Index finger is pointing up.
Curious question, did they change the alphabet? 'Cuz my e, d, f, r?
I watched a silent voice and I somehow ended up here 😅
Im over here confident as hell spelling bone lmao
I’m still having trouble w X
Can you show that one again please
replay the video..?
The aphabet Its almost the same as LIBRAS(Brazilian Sing Language), the diferences are the letters F, H, G, X, T
❤️ love ❤️
The last place I would expect to see a one piece reference
😊😊😊😊
The letter X is the most difficult 4 me. Learn HTML and ASL
🎉 10:34
It is very nice, but when you say a little bit faster, I always have to rewind over and over. It is not a little bit faster for me, only for you in my opinion.
F

❤❤❤❤
4 fingers together.
I hate that I can not memorize these. I have tried for years to do this. And I don't know anyone who signs to tell me if I am doing the letters correctly.
I'm glad you are determined to learn! I can relate to wanting feedback from someone who signs to tell you if you are doing it correctly. There are several videos of the manual alphabet on TH-cam, and some of them show the hand movements from different angles. You might find side views of letters to be helpful. Maybe watch videos from different signers to see if their methods work for you. Best wishes.
Thanks. It's been so hard to find close ups from different angles. But I have not given up.
@@lisastoran2519 Good. Perseverance pays off! Check online for Deaf meet up groups. Maybe attend a deaf chat. People who are Deaf and people learning ASL meet at a deaf chat to practice, socialize, etc. I've gone to a few deaf chats @ Starbucks. They are helpful because the Deaf are patient and want people to learn. Best wishes!
Early❤
Use dominant hand in a slightly bent position, practice producing the fingerspelling clearly.
🤟🤟🤟
My cousin might be going permanently deaf, so i wanna learn sign language so i can still talk to him(He's 9 years old)
also the letter J confuses me
