    Thank you Yosh & Bonita, I have waited with drawn breath waiting for my hubby to cross that bar many times, I knew exactly where you were & the areas you were in, many boats have had serious problems with that bar, you did well, local knowledge is always best due to ever changing
    Sands, depths etc...

      Thanks. We dont plan to cross that bar again any time soon. It was pretty rowdy! As scary as it was though, I loved it haha. We had heard some horrific stories from other yachties about the bar, so we researched the crossing alot. Spoke to the coast guard on the phone twice to make sure exactly what to expect.

    Hi guys. Great video but I had flashbacks to my last crossing of Wide Bay bar when the waves were standing up and we were crashing into the troughs. The trouble is that once you are committed there is no going back! Gnarly stuff. Enjoy your cruising course. I like the way you are going about gaining knowledge before you head off.

    Gold coast to New Cal is a hard slog to windward for over a week. You gotta wait for a westerly change which will at least give you a few days of following winds. Im sure you will enjoy it.

    • @FrothLyfeSailingNandji
      @FrothLyfeSailingNandji  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have done a lot of research and know what we are in for. It will be our greatest challenge yet! Lets hope for a good weather window!

    • @superwag634
      @superwag634 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well done. What's your boat design? It looks like some kind of Roberts 40 pilot house or some such. You want a good heavy deep keel for windward work, or you end up going more sideways than forwards. Practice tacking through 90 degrees to see if you can hold it. If not, try to optimise your sail car positions,luff tensions and add wind indicator strings to your sails. cheers

    • @FrothLyfeSailingNandji
      @FrothLyfeSailingNandji  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are close to spot on. Nandji is a Roberts 40 sloop, made from fibreglass. She is a heavy three quarter keel, so wont point at 30 degrees close hauled but close to it. She tacks a bit past 90, more like 100 degree tacks. We have played around a lot with the headsail and luff tension and plan to add a barber haul type set up to help tighten the leech. It is going to be a great challenge! Any other advice you would recommend? we are all ears when it comes to knowledgable advice. Cheers!

    • @superwag634
      @superwag634 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Barber hauler can help but its an added expense and complication. I would start with getting the sail adjusted with the fairlead at its optimum. Depending on the size and shape of your headsail, this can be easy or difficult. If its a 130 size genoa, move cars as far back as you can but try to keep enough leech tension. Then adjust leech line to take away any flapping but not make the leech curl and disrupt airflow. Also essential is at least 3 rows of telltales made of wool or similar, and learn to trust them and watch them regularly. Avoid furling a large headsail, as it no longer goes to windward well. It may be better to install a forestay (permanent is better than the fiddly detachable ones) behind your headstay so that you can raise a well sheeted staysail for when it blows 15+ and youre trying to get to windward. A lot of people fly too big a headsail, lean over past 25 degrees, which feels like youre going fast, but if you watch your track on a gps, you see that you are going as sideways as you are going forward. VMG tells you this (velocity made good) to destination. Also a good thing to install is an inclinometer. Keep yourself at no more than 20 degree lean, and you will usually go about the fastest VMG. Its like a power sensor. Over 20 degrees lean, and its time to reef down. Works wonders yet not many boats have one.
      Dont forget to install telltales on the leech of your mainsail. This is very useful for trimming to windward and it tells you if your headsail airflow is backwinding the main. You can then play with mainsheet tension and traveller position to get the best setup for the conditions.
      There's many books out there to learn from, with the classics being much more useful than the new stuff which just encourage electronic gadgets, which always break down. Classic books by old sea dogs like Hal Roth, Hiscocks, Pardeys and even the free ones from Webb Chiles, a 6 time solo circumnavigator, currently doing it again solo in a 22 foot boat at the age of 75 whilst blind in one eye! Webb for instance uses headsail to tiller self steering as he is basically taking the piss to those who say it cannot be done and that latest electronic autopilots are "necessary". He has record for longest open boat (18 footer) ocean passage. It ended when he was arrested on suspicion of being a spy in Saudi Arabia haha. And another thing i learned over the years is to keep all weight out of the ends of the boat if you want the boat to perform. Dinghys on stern and heavy anchors and chains on front just make the boat hobby horse to windward and basically come to a dead stop.
      You'll get there. I learned slowly over the last 15-20 years and i think i have it mostly figured out now that im close to 40 :-D
      Keep up the good work its good to hear that you are serious about learning more about sailing. It never stops. I have cruised my boat solo the last 7 years and learn something new every time i take it sailing (which is a few times a week). Cheerio

    Sandy Straights can be tricky, the banks move around and they move the marks to suit and may not be where you see them on the chart/plotter. Spent 12 hours on a bank there, we touched and tried kedging off, gave up and in daylight found we were actuall dragging ourselves further on to the bank. Checked the chart against latest notice to mariners in Tin Can and found the channel had moved and the DHM moved the marks to suit.

    How do you do those waters without a searchlight? Glad to see you taking a course before a big crossing! I don't sail but I've grown fond of you guys and those two on the Vagabonde! They brag about their ignorance and that's just going to come back to bite them! So good for you study hard!!By the way Yosh, if I have your name wrong I'm sorry, I wanted to tel! You I like the hair cut!! Dreads just look so dirty!! Just my opinion,and you know what they say about those! Happy learning!

      @FrothLyfeSailingNandji  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ken, we have added a good spot light to the never ending list of items we need. We took it steady and I had charts, chart plotter, navionics and a cruising guide as references haha I know the sand can move, but I made an educated decision to continue on until I felt that what lied ahead to be to difficult at night.
      We are excited about the course. You can never learn enough I reckon. The more we know, the better.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hi Guys , at 6.14 there is a shoot of your boom, and a line may be an outhaul coming out of the boom and going on to a jaw lock I think. What you need here is a knot in the end of the line so it dose not go inside it and if it goes inside you may not get it back.

      Hey thanks so much for responding, really i was just rolling (not trolling~!!) y'all to make a point. I get what you're doing, I'm hoping to be doing the same thing within a few months after years & years & years, of preparation.
      Honestly, seriously, in another world we might been mates, your channel is my flat out favorite sailing channel, period. I was just being difficult to illustrate a point bout the need for diplomacy when addressing the gulf between your patreons & the rest of us cheap ass slobs. Peace! love you guys!

    • @MrZrryan2
      @MrZrryan2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Guys, seriously, ain't nobody more "cheap" than me.... I can and DO squeeze a penny so hard that the Queen farts.
      But even "cheap ass slobs" can afford to buy em a coffee per month? It's a "Thank You" of sorts for them sharing their adventures. You can set up Patreon anyway that you want... and that includes capping your donation at 2 or 3 dollars per month. Don't feel bad about capping... of the ~17,000 followers Yosh and Bonita have, if HALF of us pledge, say, 1 dollar per video capped at 2 dollars per month, what a glorious thing that would be (!!)
      I do this with about 6 or 7 of the best sailing channels on You Tube (based on my opinions only), and I also follow a bunch more, so if someone starts to shit-tank their content, I can drop em and swing that 2 bucks per month to someone else. I recently dropped Miss Lonestar and added Uma to the mix of those I support... it's a "fluid" list.
