    These are my 5 rules for fashion:
    1. You can wear white after Labor Day! White is a wonderful color to wear anytime on anyone.
    2. Don’t let what’s in the mirror dictate who you are! Do what you feel for that day and dress that way!
    3. Take a chance! Be bold! Live your life in living color. There’s beautiful colors all around in the world, take advantage of that.
    4. You run the fashion, don’t let the fashion run you. Don’t let the fashion police tell you what to wear.
    5. Fashion does not age you! You age in the fashion. Older women can pull off just about anything if you’re confident. I’m 54 and I still get complements on items I brought years ago and still wear.
    Do you in whatever you do and wear as you do Kay. If you live that way, You will always be well put together. Thanks for the great tips Kay. I just wanted to share mine as well.

      ...I agree! I was still able to pull off wearing a mini skirt till age 53 !! And I don't mean " really short mini skirt ", just mini enough, lol.
      I owned that skirt since I was 45 ..... it was so well made, a Donna Karan , beautifully made, lined, very small slit on the right side . I got compliments every time I wore it. I still have a few items from when I was 50, that still fit ( I'm in my 60's) and still look nice.

      Love your rules. Completely agree with 5. My mom is 70 and has a great style and fashion. She has mostly classics but adds a few modern pieces which keeps her looking sophisticated. I try to learn from her! She also lives shipping at thrift stores!

    Lol! You caught me! I grew up poor, and “high water “ pants were shamed. I had them and had to wear them. I didn’t realize it until now that not only am I still critical of them, but why I wouldn’t allow my kids to wear them. If they had a growth spurt and I didn’t get ahead of it with the proper length pants, they weren’t allowed to wear them outside of the house! I stand corrected. Thank you for being gentle!

      I wore my older sister’s hand me downs when I started elementary school, problem was, she is a petite and I was never petite. Mom said I wore her second grade clothes in kindergarten. I have a problem with shorter pants that I am trying to break. I totally understand how you feel. I was very aware of what my children, three sons, wore to school. A few pieces of well fitting clothes is better than a closet of hand me downs. Peace.

    Amen. I think the best takeaway is that these rules cause us to judge others. Was overweight for years and never felt I should wear horizontal stripes. Then one day decided everybody already knew I was overweight so not wearing stripes wasn’t hiding it. 🤣🤣

    I think rules about the fit of a garment, and the most flattering styles for your shape need to be followed, and you usually look more attractive in colors that are in your palette - but other than that - throw the rules out the window, be adventurous, try new styles. Being modern (rather than trendy) is something that's not too hard to achieve, but I think that you have to be in the mindset where modern is OK! I'm in 74, and I often wear things that my 40 year old daughter in law says she is afraid to try! I'm certainly not outrageous, stay away from too tight, too short, too glittery, because that's not my style, but I think all of the current fashions can be adapted to fit different ages, shapes and sizes. You are right about customs, cultures etc.having an effect. I remember moving to the US in the 80's, to a small New England town, and my neighbors being shocked that I wore high heels (I was only 35!) as they thought they were for younger people! But - if something makes you feel good, then it shows on your face, and that in and of itself is a beautiful thing.

    There's a rule that I have a harder time breaking although I do it sometimes and that's "Don't wear white after Labor Day". White pants or white shoes specifically. A white shirt is always in style. Another is that "You should not wear pantyhose and bare legs are in" that's a tough one especially as you get older I think a nude hose can make you look so much more toned and pulled together. It's important to not be critical of others and I really appreciate you bringing that to our attention with love.

    • @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms
      @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I think you can definitely wear pantyhose if you’d like. Yes, a sheer nude or sheer black hose is very elegant and stylish.

    It is so funny that you said that. My kids have been telling me to wear pants above my ankles and I tell them that I just cannot wear "high waters" because of how I grew up. I have some now but it took a lot of convincing.

    I have just returned home after clothes shopping for some needed pieces and thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt confident and focused and bought items I really like and look good on me. Usually I am overwhelmed and have difficulty deciding and often return things.

    You hit a home run on this one (as the saying goes.) I have had these "fashion rules" drilled into my head as a child. Am still trying to shake them; especially the one on pant lengths. I love the suggestion about a color that maybe are not our best but using a scarf to soften it. I so appreciate your fashion suggestions and how to wear on trend clothes. I always said I didn't want to look frumpy when I get old (or at any age.) EACH AND EVERY TIME I wear something you suggest I get at LEAST one compliment. You also have such a beautiful loving spirit and it truly comes through in your videos. This is truly a beautiful ministry. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

    @vicwil2423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Absolutely spot on, Kay! I have broken some of these rules from time to time, and guess what? My family and friends still love me! The key rules I try to follow are some that you have mentioned in previous videos and posts: Dress for the occasion, less is more (and mysterious or alluring!), keep your garments and accessories in good repair, “set it and forget it “ (i.e. once you’re dressed for your day, don’t think any more about it), practice good posture, and always wear the same accessory-a genuine smile. (And remember that poem about “when I’m old I’ll wear purple”? I’ve loved that colour for years!).

  • @barbaraz8264

    This was so enlightening. It also made me think about other “life” rules we follow without reassessing them from time to time.

  • @janbeasley4251
    @janbeasley4251 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I have been encountering a "rule" that says nude hose or stockings are "out" and that bare legs, tights, or perhaps sheer black hose are the only acceptable legwear with dresses or skirts. I say phooey! Those folks don't have splotchy skin or spider veins or varicose veins. If a nude stocking is a close match to your skin color, they are barely noticeable, and anyone who comments negatively is too close.
    And as far as pants length, I wore just slightly too short pants for years because of long legs, and I am very sensitive about it, it makes me feel frumpy. Plus, I need socks in the cold weather, and then I prefer pants which just break at the top of the foot. The difficulty with all the various shorter pants length is that they put the focus on the shoes. I have problem feet and cannot wear heels or some other trendy shoe styles, I just feel glad to buy shoes that don't hurt.
    My comment on mixing patterns is that two different patterns need to have something in common to mix well, such as a common color, or mood or style. Or sometimes one of the patterns can be viewed as a "neutral", such as animal prints. And it is easier to mix patterns if they are not touching in the outfit.
    Thanks for addressing this topic.

      As far as nude hose go I wear them it's cold in Michigan now and bare legs....no way.

    Sometimes the rules are like taboos! Always do this! Never do that! But I agree so much with you, Kay, we need to do what makes us feel great :) I do like following certain "fashion rules", if they are chic, flattering and comfortable (most old French fashion rules are timeless anyway), but I don't like being limited to these only. For instance a few years ago, matching the colours of shoes and handbags suddenly started to be considered "boring" and dated, after DECADES being THE right/chic way. I love matching them, I do think it looks harmonious and put together, so I still often do it! But it's also fun to become more creative and not match them. Also common sense it important to me: wearing short length trousers leaving the ankles bare in cold weather because a few years ago it became trendy and socks were kind of banned... well... it doesn't make sense, so I stick to the older, classic rule of wearing socks with my loafers/ankle boots, and trousers longer than in the warm season.

    • @kimberlyperrotis8962
      @kimberlyperrotis8962 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Me, too. I both wear matching (or not) sets of shoes, belt and bag, match my hardware and jewelry metal colors, and wear socks when I want. I don’t like the feel of bare toes in a closed shoe, so I always wear at least toe covers, even if I want bare ankles.

    Good advice. So many women have been given the wrong advice about fashion. It is never too late to change and they should take your advice and try to gradually change their old ways. Fashion should be fun and not something that creates fear.

    I think you hit the nail on the head. I grew up hearing all these rules and criticisms. I agree that making fashion your own in a classy way is acceptable. I’ve ALWAYS heard that older women can’t wear red or bright lipstick. I think older women CAN wear red lipstick if it’s the right red for your coloring.

    I loved your comment about how to wear colors which aren’t necessarily the best when held against one’s face. I love bright yellow, but it does not look well on me when it is right against my face. Years ago I brought a brilliant yellow summertime skirt, and not only was the color supposedly wrong for me but it was also cut in a way which wasn’t considered to be the most flattering for my pear-shape. My daughter tried to talk me out of it! I balanced it with a white blouse which was also cut kind of full so it balanced out the skirt which was supposedly too full for me. After I wore the outfit she loved it on me… She told me I had such an attitude in it! And I did, because it made me so totally happy. I really believe we should wear what makes ourselves happy. We should wear the clothing rather than the clothing wearing us, if that makes any sense!

  • @tplayspiano

    I appreciate your original thoughts on this subject and positive attitude. Another childhood message was that people who wore ripped or stained clothing were poor. Today they do it on purpose! This is a trend I don’t personally like so I’m not going to wear it. I’ve decided to wear the nicest loveliest things that I can afford for the rest of the time I’m blessed to be on this earth.

    Thank you for all the thinking you did to prepare this video. The anxiety about everything related to the pandemic has created a national irritability.🤨 It was good you addressed the negative impact of a critical spirit, both on ourselves as well as our targets! I was amazed what a difference the vertical line of the navy vest made upon the Breton tee. You are so right: "high water" pants were always looked upon with derision in our childhoods. How interesting to have that insight now at 73.🙂 You did a wonderful job of demonstrating ways to tweak things to present our own most flattering look. Thanks so much!

    The one fashion rule I adhere to is 'no white between Labor Day and Easter.' If someone wants to, that is their choice and that is ok. For me, the only exception is winter white wool. Other than being brought up hearing this all my life, I like that white has its seasons - Spring and Summer. It is such a refreshing ,cool color. I hardly wear any other color of pants in the spring and summer. I love that fall and winter are for warmer, darker colors. Bottom line, 'you do you' as the saying goes. Wear what makes you feel good. Have a great day.

    This was great. I had never heard the "rules" about pants lengths, so that was a new one. But like you, I believe we should be wearing what we want and what gives us confidence. Appropriate attire is important, but that can still be done so creatively (and without arbitrary rules). Thank you for this!

    I grew up in the Deep South and we were told not to wear white shoes after Labor Day. Pure white pants would be frowned upon too. Recently I have seen white jeans, with white boots in a winter outfit and it looked fresh as snow. If God dresses the winter landscape in white, why can’t we do the same? Yes, fashion should be fun and interesting and we should all dress our attitudes with grace toward each other, and joy in every day that God gives. Kay, you exude these traits, which makes me enjoy your channel! Thank you for this inspirational content!

    You made some very good points in this video. Regarding trends, we women of a certain age need to be judicious about which trends we choose to wear and how we wear them. For instance, I can't imagine wearing a bra top, even though it's a current trend. Better leave those for the well-toned teens and early twenty-somethings.

I don't think I can mix prints on myself, but I can let other people have fun with it. And I am so glad that pants are various lengths now. Good fashion content, thank you. All agreed except the mixing of prints... It is possible to mix prints but you need artist eyes for that, anchor colors that connect the prints and a substantial difference in the scale of the prints that are combined. Just my opinion here...

    Wonderful tips. I will say that when I let my hair go grey I stay away from beige, brown, camel, and off-white colors which I love but feel they clash with my hair and skin. I wear purple pink red white shades of blue some gray some black.

    Thank you, Kay! You spoke to several fashion “rules” that I have cowered under. What about headbands for women over 60? I am a young looking 62 year old. I see so many lovely headbands-I am mostly thinking of the ones I see at Anthropologie. I am letting my gray grow out and keeping a shoulder length style. What are your thoughts?

    • @teresacarle294
      @teresacarle294 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      💐Mary Patricia: Anthropologie has been featuring some lovely headbands lately👍.
      As to your hair, I say God is a master colorist. Although depending upon your natural hair color, there can be a tricky transition (esp. for darker shades). If that's the case for you, a trained colorist can make it less painful.
      I'm a dark brown brunette who always turns reddish during the 😎 sunny months. My hair was in this natural transition year round with new & old growth too.
      Started getting threads of silver around the very front frame of my face in my 30s. (😉My mom💋 said they made her look older.) It never really went beyond that, but those hairs are white now. If I let it loose, they do not stand out. It's only if I wear a headband or clip it up on top that my 🦁 "lion's mane" is obvious.
      Now, the ladies (my age or older) are quick to disparage it. They may grudgingly say it looks nice on me, but would never work for them😔. Understandable, bcos I live in LA where almost everyone is chasing youth. Surprisingly, I get more unsolicited compliments from men my junior.
      All this to say, go for it. Do it for you. I just decided I didn't want to deal with chemicals or color upkeep. I also prefer to keep it up & off my face a bit. My delight, acceptance, & confidence has won over all the ppl in my life who truly count. For the rest, I try to let any negativity roll off like water💧on a duck's🦆 back. Life's simply too short to please everyone.

    Thank you Kay, great video (again)! I think hair over 50 is another challenge and I know I have some opinions about it. It is probably similar to clothing in the sense that some can wear certain hair lengths/styles better than others depending on face shape and hair type. It can get tricky especially over 60, as I am finding out. Happy thanksgiving and thank you for all your hard work!

  • @janbeasley4251
    @janbeasley4251 ปีที่แล้ว

    As far as mixing prints goes, it works better if the two prints are separated from each other. For example, I would not suggest a print scarf over a print blouse. Or a print top worn with print pants should at least be separated by a solid belt. It also is helpful if the two prints have something in common, say both have red as part of the print, or both are geometric shapes such as wearing dots and stripes in the same outfit. Another good way to combine two prints is to have different scales of design, so a small print would combine best with a larger print. It is best not to just randomly mix two prints. Give it some thought so that the choice of the two prints looks intentional.

    I think your video is great. I bought two knit poncho/cape/scarf pieces that are usually worn over an outfit but not over a coat. It really limited my use of the pieces since we have a lot of cold weather. I have started wearing these things over a wool pea coat and a long wool coat. I like breaking the rules and doing what I like. It also gives a new way to liven up my same old coats. I also live where women don’t wear baseball caps but after a few years I decided I would break convention and started wearing a cap almost daily in summer. I can do it because I have confidence. My style is my own.

    On this day before Thanksgiving I am so thankful for your videos, Kay. You really do make fashion fun. As I was watching this video two words came to mind. FLOOD PANTS. Even though I am now 63, I hear those words every time my ankle shows when I'm wearing jeans. That was the absolute worst fashion faux pas one could make when I was a teenager. You have given me permission to bare the ankles with confidence :). Happy Thanksgiving.

    Great tips! I break all the rules you suggest we can. I wear whatever color I like. I love color and I don’t think I need a neutral wardrobe to be stylish. I mix prints, I wear trends and I wear pant lengths that suit me. I did smile when you talked about society’s comparison of pant lengths and socioeconomics. I remember hearing that as a child. Good for you in pointing out we should not be critical of others. 🥰

    For myself, I really can't wear my shirts, sweaters partially tucked into the front of my jeans/skirts. At 73, I just don't feel comfortable following that style, and yet, I often see that not tucking your shirt in males you look frumpy. I guess I look frumpy as I prefer to not put my tummy on display.

      I am in my early fifties and have found it hard to break some of the rules, mixing prints was something I wanted to do, but was frightened. I started a couple years ago, I use very fine polka dots and gingham tops with floral skirts or now the stripes and polka dots. It is so much fun, because as Kay has said, it’s creative! And it’s adventurous too, shackled all those years with ridiculous limitations due to color and prints. I quilt so mixing patterns has been a part of my life, as well as mixing prints when sewing clothes for small children. So if in doubt, look at these other things around you for inspiration. You will probably get compliments!
