    I do my laundry similarly to you but after air drying over a rack I toss my items in the dryer on air fluff to soften them. Works like a charm!

      I wash all of my clothes in cold/cool water on the delicate cycle. Then I lay on a drying rack or hang probably 80% of my clothes. I have very inexpensive tees from Walmart that I’ve had for several yrs that still look new. I try to keep knits and sweaters/cardigans pill free with a shaver. I don’t have a large clothing budget as I’m retired on a smallish amount of money. So I try to take good care of my clothes.

      Excellent idea! I'm tired of my denim jeans fitting snug after drying in the dryer so I was thinking of air drying them but have never liked the stiffness.

    I think that when women feel their waists or hips are “too large” there is a temptation to hide them with looser pieces that skim over their entire bodies. The problem is that this makes every part of their body look as large as their largest part. Show off the part you are happier with. If you think your hips and tummy are too large to tuck a shirt, try tucking in just the front and blousing it a little. If you think your hips are too big, tuck and belt and then add a blazer or cardigan to create a “skinny” pillar down the front. Or don’t wear the jacket and just show off your waist and curves. Whatever part you are happiest with, give yourself the opportunity to show it off.

    I'm glad that you addressed this issue of fashion mistakes, Kay. Your videos are always full of well-researched, practical content. I found your TH-cam videos a few months ago when I was struggling with negative body-image issues that were affecting my self-esteem and willingness to get out and about. At age 61, post-menopause, my recent retirement and too much stress-eating during the pandemic had left me feeling embarrassed about changes to my body shape and unsure how to dress myself. My tummy has been the most challenging issue and your advice about that problem area has worked a miracle for me! I love to watch your videos for the great fashion advice but also because your warmth and kindness just really brighten my days. So thank you for all that hard work you do and thanks for being such a lovely person.

    Kay, this was such a helpful video!! I think as a young girl without a lot of money I was taught that you should save those beautiful clothes for a special occasion, but then I found that they were just sitting in my closet. What a great sense of freedom to wear them for everyday, not to mention that they just make you feel great!! Thanks and btw, that sweater looks great on you!

    Love these tips, Kay! I just recently had double mastectomy and I'm not having reconstruction. I'm opting for smallish prosthetic instead. I'm just now getting to the point where I'm interested in dressing for my day. I'm still spending time in my pg's (4 weeks out of surgery) but today I did dress and makeup for bible study. Thank you for all this work. It is inspiring to me...but even more since my cancer diagnosis. Much love...

    This is a gold mine of great and useful content, Kay. Thank you! On the topic of colour intensity, or high-contrast vs. lower-contrast colouring, would you consider doing another video just on this topic? It would be helpful to see pictures of other women and what colours suit them best vs. outfits which did not suit them as well. A good example of high-contrast colouring is the beautiful Amal Clooney. She looks amazing in red, mustard yellow, etc. In northern climates, we are bombarded with black clothing, although it does not flatter everyone. I'd appreciate more detail on this topic if you can. Love your channel and your kind and gracious manner.

    Lots of helpful information, but the biggest thing I got from this video was the contrast explanation. I kept seeing people talking about it in other videos, but I didn't "get it". You explained it so much more clearly and I LOVE the examples you showed afterward. NOW I get it! Thank you so much for making this video. And my husband thanks you, too. I've definitely been spending too much money on clothes for a long time only to get rid of them after wearing them a few times. That stops today.

    This was just the advice I needed to hear! As a 57 year old, I know my style but fall prey to the influence of “the trend”. Stick to what makes me feel good, limit colors for a season as you stated to keep things simple and incorporate trends in less expensive items…jewelry etc.

  • @kimberlyperrotis8962
    @kimberlyperrotis8962 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    My pro color analysis 40 years ago has been a great guide for me, but recently I dropped a few hues, like purples and most grays. Even though they were recommended, so they don’t clash with my coloring, I didn’t feel great in grays and I always found purples too difficult to style. I like having fewer colors, actually, there is a lot less work involved because I don’t have to find items “to go with them”. (I don’t believe that black goes with everything, it’s not recommended for me and I look sickly-pale with dark shadows in it, so I rarely wear it). There are still many colors in my palette that I really love to wear. I think the tighter the color palette, the easier it is to create a wardrobe that works really well. I have also been choosing lighter colors as my natural coloring fades, they are more flattering. (Soft Summer)

    • @mamed944
      @mamed944 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I loved the point about tightening your color story for the season, I am a deep autumn and I love all my color possibilities (browns! olive! rust! brick! slate! aubergine! cream! wine! dark teal, dark greens) but I don't look or feel cohesive if they are all in my wardrobe at once. It took awhile to figure this out. I too never wear black anymore and I stay away from grey near my face. I think those colors don't 'do' anything for me, whereas browns/navys/cream-ivory-beige help me look and feel more energetic.

    Taking care of your clothes is key! Hanging things back up when you've finished wearing them, and checking to see if they have any spots that need cleaning. I have a small capsule wardrobe, so I'm able to see everything at a glance (except the heaviest sweaters which I do fold and keep in drawers). I do hang lighter sweaters on satin padded hangers and this way they don't get shoulder bumps. I always hang coats - and yet I see people having them on a hook by the loop in the collar - not the best for keeping its shape. My theory of hanging everything is that if I can't see it, I forget to wear it! Not washing things too often is also important and definitely don't put them in the dryer. I am an ironer (call me crazy!) and a steamer, and I think this helps keep things fresh. Chanel used to hang her jackets out of a window to freshen them! Really good points - but I have to say, I've tried and tried to feel comfortable half-tucking a shirt or blouse - just can't get it to work. I am very short-waisted and have long legs but carry all my excess weight in the midriff and tummy. I won't give up, but by the time I get to like it, it will be out of style!

    • @hildacollier2638
      @hildacollier2638 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      To Fiona Frazier:. I hate that half tuck thing. What's the point? I don't know who started it but it really looks stupid. Kind of reminds me of when a woman goes to the rest room and the hem of her skirt gets caught in her underwear. Looks like a mistake . I guess women will be wearing their skirts like that next and calling it fashionable.

      .....Fiona .... I am also short waisted, have long legs for a woman that is about 5'2 "... and I detest that half - tuck !
      The first time I saw it I thought ..." what is that ...?? that just looks like you forgot to finish getting dressed, okay..?!" I said that out loud, to myself! Lol. It looks wierd. No thank you. I kind of considered it a trend that I hope would go away and it's still around and I just never even understood women doing that it just looks weird to me. Never tried it, and have no desire to. Lol. Sometimes I think these people that come up with these ideas , you know... they they're trying to get people to embrace being less bored with their clothing and do something different with it .....well, be that as it may , there are other ways to kind of " freshen up your look " without resorting to stuff that looks silly. ( just IMHO). I'm also in my late 60s and I prefer a classic kind of wardrobe with a few edgy pieces like Moto jackets... really cool boots, fringed jackets , velvet leggings ... but I lean towards the classics. Always have.

      I can see why people would dislike the half tuck but personally it has been a game changer for me. I think it makes an outfit look more polished and gives you shape without having to commit to completely tucking in your top ( usually isn’t very flattering for most of us!)

I think I have done this because many of our friends see me casually and I want to look special or different on date nights! Dumb right! I have to work on this! I just love these tips! Many good reminders that I've forgotten or need to try and a few that have already helped me so much. The BIGGEST thing for me was learning about contrast. I'm light like you and I was all of a sudden able to figure out why some of my favorite clothes were unwearable for me. The second thing that was a game changer was taking pictures of myself, full length, head to toe pictures in outfits that I own and ones that I've purchased and am undecided on. This is a great way to see what length your clothes need to be, where your waist is, what shoes and accessories are right etc. For special occasions where I'm buying a new dress, I love to bring several home and put them on with the shoes and accessories and take pictures. It's usually a no brainer which one I should keep and wear once I look at the pics. Thanks for using the word "relevant". I think that's what I want most. I don't care if I'm seen as stylish but I do care that I'm relevant to others and I think style can really do a lot to help with that. I would love a video about what different ways of dressing conveys to certain situations. Like is blue more powerful than pink in a big business meeting? Or if you're needing to talk to a dr about a plan of action for your health and you want to really advocate for yourself, should you wear a suit, jeans and a t-shirt, certain colors that might be taken more seriously? I'm sure you have thoughts on this.

    Finally getting to the point where I will spend more on basics, jeans, workpants. Haven't got there with tops yet though. I also tend to wash everything after one wear, I think pants fit better. I also dry everything. I am tall and don't need things to shrink!. I have a problem with not hiding my body. I am about 80 lbs over weight (working on it) but there is no way I'm going to tuck something in or wear a belt to show my middle! Lots of good things for thought!

    You’re so right about trying something several times. The key is taking a picture of yourself in the outfit and looking at it over and over again. This is such good advice Kay, I’ve done it and it changed my perspective of an outfit from bad to good.

    Great video. I had to order 3 times before I found the perfect pair of wide leg jeans that felt just right for my 62 year old self. They are fresh but feel just right for me. I had to kinda chuckle at my 33 year old daughter who scoffed at them. I wore them boldly to church this weekend and didn’t blink. She is gonna have to deal with the new look as I did when those skinny jeans arrived on the scene. Good ideas in your video, Kay!

    Another awesome video !! I can so relate to most points, specially having to many colors in my wardrobe. They all suit me and match with things, but it comes to a huge amount of clothes in the end. I often bought an item since I do not have one in that color. I'm also bad about not wearing my 'good' clothes every day. I hang all my clothes to dry and take good care of them, but I still like them to look in 'like new' condition when I go places. I have to make some changes there. There are more clothes to get were they came from.

    Each year, I make several fashion lists. I list the current fashions I would wear. I list what is currently in my wardrobe that matches that. I make a list of possible outfits.
    And the most important list is my capsule wardrobe. This is the backbone of my wardrobe for the season and what I need to complete it.

    I LOVED this video. You spoke the truth about all 10 mistakes we make. I especially liked the wear a belt if you like - I would like to as I see it would add a lot to an outfit, but I feel my belly sticks out too much. I have to just get over it and try it!! Also, I've been taking the advice of buying quality over quantity, and having a plan for what I want to buy, and then buying it when I see it. all good advice!!

    All wonderful tips. Thank you, Kay! I am analyzing contrast now when putting together outfits, and I better understand why I just don't like to wear certain items together even though they look great together on a hanger. You inspired me to try a couple of new-to-me styles, with some appreciated success. Also - you look truly fabulous in that Talbots sweater! It compliments your skin beautifully and brings out your beautiful eyes. Love it!

    I’m almost 70, tall, and a plus size. I still enjoy experimenting with fashion. I’m proud of my hour glass figure and have found ways to modestly showcase it. You are so right, we plus size ladies sure can accentuate our curves and look good. I also agree with having a smaller wardrobe of quality pieces, they last and are a good investment.
