    My wife and I were on vacation at the time of this movie’s release. It was a rainy day so we decided to go see this flick. The theatre, however, was a very old one and within about ten minutes or so, the projector broke down and we all (probably about 10 people total) were given a refund of the ticket cost and left. • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple 10 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      jokesterr119
      I'm an ego maniac? Okay, how? For what? Well, I may not have made a film, but I've spent years making several comics series, and guess what? There are some of them that, looking back, I don't like very much anymore. There are some that I admit aren't very good and don't hold up, or that I think I would've done differently if I were to try to now.
      ANY kind of artist NEEDS to be able to look back at their work with a critical eye. That way, they'll see their own faults and strive to do better next time, to improve themselves and their work. That's GOOD. That's being humble. If someone can't do that without having a mental breakdown or having their spirit crushed, as you seem to be implying, if they have to look back on their work and think "Yep, I'm just perfect. I don't need to improve in any way. People just don't understand how utterly infallible and awesome I am," then they're going to stagnate because they just stop trying. Shyamalan is not another Spielberg or Chris Nolan.

    I haven't seen it but it seems like Shamalan just assumed any idea he came up with had to work because of his overinflated ego. I think the basic concept of a water nymph living in a pool and a secret hidden world full of weird creature could be an awesome movie with the right writer and director. Anyone agree?

    • @ArabKatib
      @ArabKatib 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think he chose himself because of ego.. I think he fullfilled a need which the script had, and maybe saw himself suitable enough for the role to be able capture what he devaloped in his head. Nothing wrong with this.
      (But people are generally harsh toward any form of "self-insert").
      There are many indie-vibe films out there with directors injecting themselves into their works with blatant narcissism, their faces hugging the camera, while their movies are completely empty of any story whatsoever, not even any significany story elements, fragments or tiny bits. Yet? They still get praised by many pretentious critics and for silly reasons.
      Lady in The Water on the other hand did bring an interesting, enjoyable, fully devalopped, fleshed out story, with lots of action and scares, which many indie films do lack..
      I don't know why many people hated this film, but we did love it, yet we were not even M. Night Shamalan fans back then.

    I think M. Night Shamylan's character in this is a misdirect too. The "writer" is Paul Giamatti's character although he is also the "healer" and his writings are his diary. He is the one that has to be "awoken" because he has shut himself off from the world due to his inability to face his grief. As Story is getting ready to leave he tells her he is glad she read his diary and thanks her for saving his life. This isn't my favorite Shyamalan film but I think it gets far too much hate. It is incredibly unique, Paul Giamatti's performance is fantastic, it's beautifully shot and the score is gorgeous.

    You know, it looks like it could be a good story. Shymalan has a good eye and understands pacing and generating interest but he, I think, makes the mistake of thinking all of his ideas are gold. Magic milkman I'm sure the version he told his children was a lot more simplified and short. Completely different than a full length movie made for an older audience. Didn't help that the movie was marketed as a horror film so I'd imagine that would throw off and confuse anyone.

    Even though his last half dozen or so movies have sucked, I still think M. Night Shyamalan (however the hell you spell it) is a pretty brilliant guy. Sometimes pushing the boundaries doesn't work. Sometimes it does and you can redefine a medium. With genius comes insanity. The guy is weird. That's why he made some pretty badass movies in the past.

    • @Thorntonian
      @Thorntonian 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Damien Cross And by some, you mean one.
      That being the sixth sense, the only film he has made that everyone seems to agree worked.
      The rest of his work is half debateable (films like the village, the visit, unbreakable, signs), and half universally hated (lady in the water, avatar, the Happening- so bad it's good still counts- after earth...)
      Also, pushing the boundaries? Shyamalan?! You could make a very dangerous drinking game out of his tropes. When you find a Shyamalan movie that does not contain slow dialogue, a twist, at least 50 ripped-off shots so blatant he may as well give Kubrick a credit & a theme about either faith or critics of his work, you can make the argument he's branching out. But pushing boundaries?! The only thing he's been pushing since signs is luck.

    The film critic should have been the main character. A cynical man who meets a water nymph who tells him to write a story about his experiences with her. We learn that the film critic is actually a former film writer who was blacklisted in the industry.
    No "twists," no mythical creatures. Just a lady from the water inspiring someone to follow their dream one more time.

    I just can't fathom how people could absolutely hate this show. I mean, generally disliking the method of presentation or just being indifferent towards the idea of it all, that's fine, it's not for everybody and that's okay, but to actually write nothing but bitterness and contempt for FanboyFlicks? Really? Wow, people. Mark presents himself and these reviews in such a way that is so mellow, easy-going, and non-confrontational that even when I find myself disagreeing with him, I don't even think anything contrary, I just go with the flow and keep watching because I'm being entertained. Maybe it's the Canadian in me...
    Basically, I watch this to hear _his_ interpretation on these bad movies, not use it as a vehicle to voice mine.
    So good on you, Mark. I like that you don't change the show's format and shape it due to what endlessly critical people are saying. Instead you conform it to what the people who like it are saying.
    With that being said, please, everybody like me, I must be liked! My life needs to be validated by you all acknowledging my existence and having a favorable impression of my entirety!

      Tbh the music titled The Healing is very moving and the other pieces that follow after it on the soundtrack that play while the wolf/plant creature is being recaptured and then on to the finale and end credits.
      I heard them before seeing the film and it made me want to watch it. I have to admit the creature the effects team created was an amazing feat. A complete animatronic that could actually walk and stalk on its own.
      They even built an entire fully functioning apartment complex from the ground up and turned it over to the city where they filmed.
      There's the old story of Paul McCartney and George Harrison having a chance meeting with some of the guys from the Beach Boys at a training seminar to learn to play the sitar being taught by the legendary Ravi Shankar. It was there that they gave McCartney pointers on how to write a beach song for "Back in the USSR".
      I always thought of M. Night Shyamalan as the poor man's Ravi Shankar. Overdoing it on the enigmatic aesthete thing.
