Oh, my goodness! I've never seen this one, but I want to. It looks like a hoot. Stanwyck never gives a bad performance. I especially love her in comedic roles.
Pinky Lee had a live children’s after-school show when I was a little kid...I remember one of the sponsors was Tootsie Roll. Right in the middle of the live show, he passed out! The camera quickly panned away from him and to a tight shot on the girl singer, who started singing “Shoo Fly Pie” while nervously glancing down at Pinky. All the little kids in the bleachers thought it was part of his act....as did I. I always thought he had died that day, but later read that he lived to his late ‘80s.
Thank you Steve for another great review....you bring every movie so alive....for a few minutes, I forgot about this Mad Mad Mad Mad World!!! Stanwyck is one of the best ever.
That was very interesting to hear that Barbara Stanwyck had described herself as common. I remember a scene in "Titanic" in which Richard (Clifton Webb) and Julia (Barbara Stanwyck) are having an argument and she loudly says something like "I'll be as common as you think I am!" Richard calmly replies, "Do you think you could be common in a slightly lower voice?" Great dialog between two performers who went so well together.
Yes, Stanyck never denied her background and her honsety fed into all her roles. I love "Titanic" as well. You're right, she and Webb were perfectly paired. It still makes me cry. Thanks for watching.
@@stevenhayes4063 The scene where he says 'There is nothing Julia you can say that can make me give up my son' PAUSE 'He's not your son.' TWO SECONDS He turns and walks away. The cabin door in front of Stanwyck slowly swings as the Titanic floats along. Drama at its very best.
Thanks Steve, I have waited so long for you to review this fabulous movie, and it was worth the wait. I saw it as a kid back in the late 1940's, and in the UK it was called "Striptease Lady". I suppose thay they thought we Londoner's wouldn't know what Burlesque was.. Another of my favourite Stanwyck films was "The Other Love" in which she played a consumptive concert pianist. She is fabulous in it, and I would love to know what you think of it.

This is one of Barbara stanwyck`s best films! I just watched it again a few days ago. It's full of mystery film noir comedy and glamour..little bit of everything. Iris Adrian is sooo great! I have a beautiful autographed photo of her. She needs to be remembered more! I'm pretty sure she has a small cameo in Joan crawford film flamingo road..the whole cast is amazing, the whole film is amazing!
Another great review, Steve. I can't wait until you re-examine "Clash by Night" for us. One of Stanwyck's greatest performances, as far as I'm concerned.
Rick Wilson Yes I agree. Her bra strap falling from her shoulder in the middle of the argument - it must have been coached to do so at the exact right time in the dialogue.
Each girl had a specific way to insult the detective as they walked out and the last girl would always deliver the slap. I can watch it 100 times and still catch a different detail.
Dear Steve, thank you so very much for recommending this - I think Barbara Stanwyck is marvellous and I knew nothing about "Lady of Burlesque" until I saw your review. I will find the film the minute I can. It's always wonderful to see Barbara Stanwyck dancing (as in "Ball of Fire") but she's marvellous as a chorus girl here. And I'm fascinated that it's based on a novel written by Gypsy Rose Lee. All the way back in the 'fifties and early 'sixties there was a chat show on British television hosted by a man who didn't know how to handle anybody and somehow he had Gypsy Rose Lee on his show. He introduced her and then started referring to her "dancing". Gypsy Rose Lee was clearly as down to earth as Stanwyck and said "Dancing? I never danced a step - that wasn't what I was doing!" She had a lovely deep voice and talked fascinatingly and absolutely took over the show. This was long before the film "Gypsy" came out and she was unforgettable. I so look forward to seeing this film and thank you again. Best wishes, Alida
If you go on TH-cam, you can probably find videos of the daytime talk show Gypsy did in the '60's. She's hilarious! I wish you had a 4K Home Theatre set up. Mine has made a big difference especially watching Classic films. Some of the older films have been beautifully remastered in Bluray and 4K and it is as good as seeing them at a theater again. I am finding a lot of wonderful stuff on streaming channels like Classic Reel on Roku. I love your reviews. You always have an interesting perspective. You would be so much fun as a host on TCM. You could be the un-Dave Karger.
Just watched this on your recommendation. I don’t know why I never saw this before! It’s so much fun, I figured pretty early who was the murderer, but who cares! Stanwyck’s dance number with Pinky Lee is worth the price of admission. The dialogue is hysterical, not sure how they got some of it past the censors. When Stanwyck tells Michael O’Shea he wasn’t the murderer because his hands would have gone somewhere else 😂! The ladies are all great & Michael O’Shea is adorable! 😊
Hello Therese! Yes; The mystery is esecondar to the delights of the dialogue, the cast and the rpoduction! So many of my gavorite character actresses in omne movie! Iris Adrian is sensational and O'Shea is perfect as the leading man. Stanwyck obviously loved doing this one because it takes her back to her broadway/chrous gilr roots. I saw you did Demetrius and the Gladiators...I'd LOVE to see you do one on the film Demetrius was the sequal to- Quo Vadis. Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments tend to get all the praise for Biblical films, but my favorite is Quo Vadis- and I'm an atheist. It was up for Best Picture and Peter Ustinov chews down walls- not just scenery, as Nero.
Great video as always, Stanwyck had such a vibrant energy to her that no one else has been able to replicate. Knows that these were all made before I was born but I kinda miss the subtlety of old film seduction and sensuality. Nowadays everybody just hops into the sack and much of the nuance dissapeared.
You know, this movie would make a perfect Holodeck program. I get first dibs on “Dixie Daisy” although playing a character called, “Biff Brannigan” has a certain appeal. Sorry...my SciFi geek self took over. Thanks for the this romp with Miss Stanwyck!
I just rewatched this. What fun! Steve, I adore all your TOQ episodes, but have you ever considered reviewing a silent film (I'm a big Louise Brooks fan) or possibly a foreign film (I love Kurosawa's work)? Just asking.
I have, but I feel there are more than enough movie mavens out there to cover those areas better than I could. I may revue "Sunrise" or "Pandora's Box" sometime. As for Foreign films; If I did a Kurosawa, it would probably be one of the later ones like "RAN". Thanks for the recommendations.
Isn't it! I adore tghis one and you can tell Stanwyck had a ball doing it. Prefectly cast all around, especially iris Adrian as her side kick! Thanks for watching! Steve
Babs is the most underrated movie star ever but she was the ONLY movie star for me. I loved her dearly. LOL makes me remember the night I saw Charles Pierce at the Dotty Chandler Pavilion when he did his imitation of Barbara: "Oh Walter, Oh Walter" through gritted teeth.
Tons of great one liners, quite funny. It’s like a play. Stanwyck is fun. Princess Norvena adds camp value lol. Lady is highly recommended. ps I am watching this January 2024, huh TH-cam?
I have a wild idea! How about you venture forth into the American-acclaimed European films? There’s plenty of iconic Dietrich Burton Garbo Fellini, so many wonderful Russian oldies, and above all... the New Wave. If you asked me, I’d start the new segment with Breathless A bout de Souffle. Much, much love darling! And may the protesters prevail and black community reach the goal 🖤💪🏼
Steve, regarding Barbara Stanwyck -- Have you ever seen or reviewed 'No Man of Her Own'? That's a good one. Also, the scene in the Thornbirds where Barbara is at the door of her room with Richard Chamberlain standing at the door reading his beads up and down and uses the term 'your vengeful God, etc.' Whoa that scene made me COL-cry out loud. Even in her elder years she was still the Queen of Cinema.
I'll put "No Man Of Her Own" on my "to do"list. Thanks for the reminder. I love Stanwyck in "The Thronbirds" and Jean Simmons was excelent as well. Barbara always pulls at my heartstrings.
Sent you "Good girl." (Shirley MacLaine to Anne Bancroft after Anne throws martini in said MacLaine's face in "The Turning Point) kudos for Mary Boland. Deserved. But your Barbara Stanwyck (my favorite actress bar none) is no slob. You are brilliant. Barring my entry into traditional heaven (Streisand doesn't have one yet) I opt for a continuous loop of Stanwyck's showstopper "Play It on the G-String." And Edith Head gets merit badge points as well for her almost nude, midriff bearing hotcha stripper gown with ermine stole.

Steve love your reviews, I am a big fan of classic films, noir’s especially, Love Mitchum and Robert Ryan, anything from RKO , pre H. H. Keep them coming brother
While she wasn't a mere "Pin Up" type, she did have "legs for days".
I watched this movie somewhat recently. I enjoyed a lot. But I adore Barbara Stanwyck.
Me too and this one especially. She's so confortable with both the role and the setting. You can tell she had such a good time!
She was a terrific dancer and I agree, she and Pinky were adorable together. it's one of my favorites of all her films, because she so enjoyed herself. Thanks so much ! Stay SAFE! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 you stay safe too!!!
Wow I’ve been aware of this movie for a long time but never realized it was a murder mystery, I will definitely check it out!
It's so mcuh fun on so man levels. Enjoy!
You make all the movies you talk about fun
You make me so happy!
Just watched it for the first time. It was a lot of fun. Great wise cracks. Steve, your review was right on the money.
Hooray! I just lve this film and all those beautiful, hysterical dames! Whevere I'm in the dumps for watever reason, this is one that I grab. Always makes me feel better! Thanks for watching! Saty SAFE! Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ ...if I make film suggestions, is that really in poor taste???
@@guilfordcigarman Not at all. I'll put the ones I like onto my "To Do" list. I always like suggestions, in case I've overlooked something and it also shows me that you like what I'm doing. I take it as a compliment! Suggest away! Thanks so much and stay SAFE...I know, I say that alot, but condisdering the circumstances, you can't sya it enough. Stay Safe! OXOX Steve

Love this movie!
Me too!!! Thanks fo watching!
By any chance, did you see Showgirls? LOVE your reviews! You NEED your own show! I could watch you ALL night! Hi to you too Johnny!
Thanks. I saw "Showgirls". LOL!
I'm so glad! I'll tell Johnny!
🤣🤣🤣🤣Another great one.. Thanks Steve. ❤️❤️
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Stanwyck always gave 110%
Enjoyed as always!! I'm hoping one day you'll review A Face in The Crowd, with Patricia Neal and Andy Griffith, that's my favorite "backstage" showbiz story.
It's a great one! I'll put it on my "to do" list!!
I'll put "Quo Vadis" on my to do list! Thanks for watching!
@@stevenhayes4063 please do, i love Quo Vadis.
Peter Ustinov's Nero is a hoot. And Poppea is fantastic. Leopards on a leash!
Yes, we're all in need of you, Johnny, ditching the glasses, the facial hair, and the shirt... HUBBA-HUBBA!!! 💋
Thanks so much for watching! Steve
Great video as always, Stanwyck had such a vibrant energy to her that no one else has been able to replicate. Knows that these were all made before I was born but I kinda miss the subtlety of old film seduction and sensuality. Nowadays everybody just hops into the sack and much of the nuance dissapeared.
Grand kids are loaded on processed wheat, butter, and maple syrup and eyes glued to B&W screen. They have learned VHS. Again thank you .
Good! They are in for a marvelous ride in the wonderful world of Black and White Classics! Hooray!
This is a favorite:)
that looks like a fabulous film. Love Barbara Stanwyck what a talented multifaceted actress. Great review Steve, two thumbs up!
Hey Buddy, thanks so much for your comments, as always! Sending a hug and stay safe!
Steven, artists gotta support the arts ya know!! you're welcome.
You know, this movie would make a perfect Holodeck program. I get first dibs on “Dixie Daisy” although playing a character called, “Biff Brannigan” has a certain appeal. Sorry...my SciFi geek self took over. Thanks for the this romp with Miss Stanwyck!
My pleasure. I want to play Dolly (Iris Adrian) ! All gin soaked and wisecracking.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I understand. There may be, as you say, more than enough movie mavens out there -- but there's only one TOQ.
@@johnreimler467 Awwwww, I'll give you an hour to cut that out!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Love to have you do "Ran". Also "The Leopard", "Borsalino", "Purple Noon", "The Conformist".
@@davidburgess3882 "Purple Noon" is definitely on my'to do' list. Also, "The Leoard and "Garden Of The Finzi Contini's".
I love this movie❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ lots of fun❗
I agree. Hilarious!
I love this movie..... It's here on TH-cam !
I know! There are so many wonderful films available on TH-cam! Nice you dont have to search! Thanks for watching!
I like this film so much more than Ball of Fire. It is so much fun.
Isn't it! I adore tghis one and you can tell Stanwyck had a ball doing it. Prefectly cast all around, especially iris Adrian as her side kick! Thanks for watching! Steve
When are you going to review the Feud TV show?
Babs is the most underrated movie star ever but she was the ONLY movie star for me. I loved her dearly. LOL makes me remember the night I saw Charles Pierce at the Dotty Chandler Pavilion when he did his imitation of Barbara: "Oh Walter, Oh Walter" through gritted teeth.
God, Charles Pierce was a genius. They don't make 'em like him OR like Stanwyck anymore. We're we fortunate to have seen him? Thanks for watching!
David Loehmann She's not underrated. She was a huge star. My Mother loved her.
like Leave Her to heaven....i love watching this one
Like Gypsy Rose Lee, the less she took off the more they liked her!...wish I'd followed that advice... oh, well...
Tons of great one liners, quite funny. It’s like a play. Stanwyck is fun. Princess Norvena adds camp value lol. Lady is highly recommended.
ps I am watching this January 2024, huh TH-cam?
I love this one. Iris Adran has me in stitches. You can tell Stanwyck really enjoyed herself .
Fabulous
I think so too!
How many times do I have to rewatch "Trick" before you'll do a piece on "The Trouble With Angels" and "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows"?
How many??
It's on my list! Don't give up! Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ To quote Stevie Nicks, I can't wait.
🤣🤣oh my god, your imitation of BS is the best😜
OMG, your compliment made my day! Steve
Love Stanwyck in this movie. AND all the other girls. Thankx for tickling my g-string with this one !
My pleasure! Now, play it on the "E" string! OXO
Awwww, thanks, Dave. I"ll give you an hour to cut that out! OXOXO
love

Was Pinky in Shadow of yhe Thin Man. If not he had a double.
