BRAVO STEVE!!!! For many years, Broadway legend Chita RIVERA was my neighbor in NYC. According to her, when she lost the role of Anita in WEST SIDE STORY to Rita MORENO, and Rita won a supporting Oscar for the role, Chita was devastated. NOT because Rita MORENO won the Oscar, but because she wore the EXACTO costume Chita wore on the stage. I think deep down she knew she couldn't compete with MORENO'S natural born beauty.... Miriam had every right to hate BETTE. BUT, deep down she knew BETTE was the better actress.
Miriam had a wonderful run in the early thrities before Bette came on the scene. But Miriam was her own worst enemy, vene before her problems with Bette and became more and more difficult to work with . In fact, Willie Wyler, who'd worked with her in "These Three", offered her the supoorting role in "The Heiress", which was a comeback for Miriam into important pictures again. However, he made it clear he wouldn't put up with any of her usual shenanigans . She behaved and he used her again in 'Carrie" and "the Children's Hour".
I agree. They tried to do an updated remake with Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergan in the late 70's called " Rich and Famous" directed by George Cukor, but it didn't have half the sparkle. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Excellent review, Steve, as always!! I loved the line when Kit tracked down Deirdre to her beau's apartment and knows she's hiding behind a dressing screen: "Come out from behind that screen." "How did you know I was there?" "I've been hiding behind screens since before you were born." 😂
Gorgeous Miriam was huge star in 1930s pre-code Hollywood and when Bette won her first Oscar, one of the actresses she beat that year was Miriam. By the time they made The Old Maid, in 1939, Miriam's career was almost over and Bette was the queen of the Warner's lot. No wonder she hated her. Check out 1966's The Chase (Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda) to see a few seconds of Miriam playing Robert Redford's mother.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I'm a total fan - I love your work! The Chase was such a mess, but so many pretty faces ...Angie Dickinson, Janice Rule, Martha Hyer, Brando, Redford, Fonda ... it ended up a sloppy disaster. No one could do it better than you, if you get a chance someday.

I sometimes wonder if Miriam Hopkins had not made 2 pictures with Bette Davis. Miriam Hopkins was probably the only Actress in Hollywood that wasn't scared of Bette Davis.
Not at all. She was fearless and more than that, jealous. She made everyone's life miserable and in the end, only damaged herself, because reports of all her shenanigans got around. Best Wishes; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I had a friend who was nuts about Miriam Hopkins. He had all the photographs, posters and lobby cards of her movies. He even met her when she toured in I think it was one of Tennessee Williams plays. Miriam Hopkins actually starred (I think it was in Boston) of the first Tennessee Williams play, later called "The Fugitive Kind". From what I remember the Stage caught fire during the fire scene and the Play was a disaster. Very interesting story. My friend told me Miriam Hopkins was into Numerology and based a great deal of the decisions she made on numbers. That included her turning down the part in "It Happened One Night". Thank goodness she didn't turn down the Lubitsch movies she was in, and I think that was in part because Ernst Lubitsch liked her so much. Her last film "Hollywood Horror House is a hoot! I though she did well in "The Chase" with Marlon Brando (especially the Courthouse scene) and the episode on "Outer Limits" she did called "Don't Open til Doomsday".
Steve, this is one of my favorites! They may have truly hated one another but Davis & Hopkins' chemistry together is brilliant!!! The Old Maid is definitely another fave of mine!
Though the other is the more famous, I've always liked this one better. "The Old Mid" is too self-sacrificing for my taste. I also I like Bette's character in "Old Aquaintance" so much and apparantly so did she. She always thought this character was the most like herself...which, from what I've read and heard, is somewaht debateable. However, I love the way it looks at the importamce of friendships, the toll they can take , the drifting apart and then getting back together, the importance of letting go and most importantly, of forgiveness. Big life lessons, displayed in such a enjoyable context. Happy Holidays and thanks so much for watching! Best Wishes; Steve

I don't think there would have been a problem. They were never compared to each or in competition. I also don't think it would have worked with Norma in the selfish Miriam role. Finally watched this for the first time, and was pleasantly surprised on how good it was. Davis as always gives a consummate performance. All are good, but Davis showed how skillfully she can portray a genuinely vulnerable and sympathetic character. Despite the two hating eachother, it never really shows on screen. I saw this movie on Turner Classic Movies years ago, and I really liked this movie. I still remember that scene where Bette Davis shook the other actress and then pushed onto the couch. I laughed so hard when I saw that because I did not think they would make a movie like that. Thank you Steve for posting an enjoyable review. I laughed so many times when you did your Bette Davis impersonation. I look forward to your next review.
The thing is, at the time this movie was made, the height of the war. the movie going public was made up mostly by women. Working women. And Bette fought to make stories that women could relate to as the main characters, not secondary window dressing to the leading man. She wa s a maverick! So glad you watch!!
GREAT! GREAT! HILARIOUS REVIEW STEVE! I've never even heard of this one... And I LOVE Betty Davis. You had me cracking up, sitting here, watching this in the car. YOU ARE SOOOOO CRAY! Ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Thanks soooooo much. LOVED it!
I have never seen this movie but it certainly rang a bell...reminded me of the movie made by Jackie Bissett and Candice Bergen must have been a remake!
I’m listening to a bunch of Betty Davis interviews and she seem to have much more venom for Miriam Hopkins and fig Dunaway than she ever did for Joan Crawford
Only when you started describing the film narrative did I realise that George Cukor's Rich and Famous (1981) was a remake of Old Acquaintance. Astonishing! Of course we only watch the 1981 retelling of the original for that scene with Jacqueline Bissett & Matt Lattanzi`s bottom in the bedroom seduction scene that follows so closely on from that clumsy copulation in the Airplane toilet. Which makes It more like a sex comedy especially with those subtle touches of hilarity that Cukor has Michael Brandon, who plays Max the married man, explain away why he has a a sticking-plaster over his wedding ring: is the funniest thing I had seen to date. I was barely a teenager when I saw the modern version, and even as a callow youth, it was done so well I immediately got the joke. Such that afterward I didn`t quite resent the deception because who could blame him, Michael Brandon, when he has a WASP - with a sky-slope nose - for a wife, played by Ann Risley. I do love your commentary and the fact that you have clearly done your home-work as to setting the circumstances & set-backs of the production. Oh well Old Acquaintance is another to add to my `to do` list of films following your recommendation.
I always thought they gave her dreadful hairdos except for "Now, Voyager" and "All About Eve". Although I like her grey streak in this one as she gets older. Happy Holidays 7 Thanks for Watching; Best Wishes; Steve
I absolutely LOVED this one. You do Bette FABULOUSLY. Honey, if you do her again, have a REAL cigarette and BLOW that smoke in our faces! ALSO... YOU did the "Sorry" better than Bette did. Great, great review!!!

Gig Young.. he was supposed to play The Wakko kid in Blazing Saddles. But he'd had drinking issues and needed to be taken off by ambulance.
As for the first director on this flic FAKED a heart attack to get out of it.
You are the best thank you my morning has been rescued
Glad to come to your rescue!
A wonderful film, only these 2 amazing strong actresses could portray.
On screen, amatch made in Heaven,on the set, a made in Hell. LOL!
Thanks Steve, another fabulous review! It's kinda spooky that almost without exception, your tastes and opinions are a match for my own. And you always make me laugh at your obvious love of the golden age of Hollywood. Keep 'em coming you (not so) tired old queen! PS dare I suggest Madam X as a future feature?
You can dare and I may just do it! Thanks so much!
Time to revisit this. Steve, great stuff.
Absolutely!
I wish you would review 'Old Maid' also and compare the films. You're a master at story summary (sans spoilers), also production details alloyed with just enough juicy gossip to stimulate without derailing the narrative.
Thank you. It's on my "To Do" list. best Wishes and thanks for watching! Steve
Great, you're still doing segments. Luvit !
Just discovered your reviews and what a glorious one to start with , I love this movie so much and even more now knowing the back story !!! Gonna watch it now and also subscribing of course xxxx
Thank you SO much!
Steve you have to do "The Turning Point" now.
GREAT! GREAT! HILARIOUS REVIEW STEVE! I've never even heard of this one... And I LOVE Betty Davis. You had me cracking up, sitting here, watching this in the car. YOU ARE SOOOOO CRAY! Ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Thanks soooooo much. LOVED it!
Great! So gad you liked it! Car or no car, thanks a million for watching!
Great review! Such Fun!
Steve, have you reviewed Of Human Bondage with Ms Davis? I can't find it if you have...
Nope. But, it's on the "To Do" list.

I have never seen this movie but it certainly rang a bell...reminded me of the movie made by Jackie Bissett and Candice Bergen must have been a remake!
It was indeed! Thanks so much for watching. Please subscribe and push the "LIKE" button. Say well. Stay SAFE. Best : Steve
Fabulous start to the new year Steve, or should I say Miss Davis!
Don't tell Bette that! She'll shoot you...she's like that!
Like the late Charles Pierce, you both do a great Bette Davis....
High, high praise. Thank you!
Loving your impersonations of Bette Davis...
Thanks so much!
I’m listening to a bunch of Betty Davis interviews and she seem to have much more venom for Miriam Hopkins and fig Dunaway than she ever did for Joan Crawford
Absolutely. But, the Crawford fued got the press because "baby Jane" was all over the papers and the feud sold. Happy Holidays; Steve
Love this movie...Love you guys too!
Thank you so uch for watching!
Why do they Call you Tired? You Don't Look Tired? You are not Even Dead.
Bette Davis ❤❤❤❤
I know...BETTE DAVIS!!!!
I believe this was remade in 1981 called “Rich and Famous” with Candice Bergen and Jacqueline Bisset. Am I right?
Bingo! It was Cukor's last film...and I don't think nearly as good...though the guys were cuter. Happy Labor Day! Steve
Spot on, Betty Davis imitation🚬
Many thanks, althouigh Bette might have a thing or two...or six... to say about it...YIKES! Steve
You missed the Jezebel reference by Hopkins.
Steve! ❤️ you always Pick Winners! 🤩.. I am not a Gambler
but perhaps we might go to the Racetrack one day!
You are the Best 💕 from Antonio
Steve, I LOVE your videos... but please do reviews of movies that have OTHER stars in them
Well, if you look through my past reviews, I think you'll see quite a variety. Happy New Year!
Sounds hysterical
Was this remade in the 70s with Jaqueline Bissett and Candice Bergen? I think the title was Rich and famous
Absolutely. With alot more sex.. It was George Cukor's last film, but it doesn't have the zing that this one does. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
The movie with Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergen is called "Rich and Famous". PS. Steve, you Bette is brilliant.
There you go and thank you for the comoliment!
I’m even mesmerized by Bette’s hair. She always has it parted SO far over to the site, oops I mean side. 😝
I always thought they gave her dreadful hairdos except for "Now, Voyager" and "All About Eve". Although I like her grey streak in this one as she gets
older.
LOL! Thanks for the compliment! I like this one too. It moves me a great deal, because she's so accepting of who, what and where she is at the end. The champaigne toast at the fianale always make me cry a little. Thanks for watching and please stay SAFE! Best; Steve
I read somewhere in an interview that Bette Davis thought Miriam Hopkins was a good actress but she was so impossible that eventually nobody would work with her.
Yes. She got in her own way.
