When I 1st saw this movie I felt this deep connection with the character Jimmy that's hard to describe. And I'm not a teenager anymore and yet still speaks out to me to this day.
A wonderfully sensitive review, Steve. You really 'get' the phenomenon that was James Dean and the profound effect he had on many teens over the generations ( including me) with his tumultuous portrayals.
"A blazing comet', as has often been quoted about him and as cliched as that may sound, I think it fits perfectly. He is impossible not to watch. Thanks so much for the comment and for watching! best Wishes for a loveley summer! Steve
I saw East of Eden for the first time on the late show in 1984 when I was 13. I love it so much that the next day I went to the library to find out who this James Dean guy was . I was completely devastated when I found out that he died shortly after making the movie and that he only made 3 films. Such a loss. Ive always wondered what his career would have been like.
Dear Shawn; I have a feeling that we saw the best he could do in the three films he made. If you read any of the bios on him or of people who worked with him, he was a prertty disturbed individual who had alot of issues he never delt with. He was extremely self destructive in most areas of his life and evenetually I think the studios woudl have tired of his constant shenanigans and stopped working with him. But the legacy he left was impressive, so much so, that it remains vital to this day. Thanks so much for watching! Best; Steve
What a passionate review! I haven't seen Steve talk about anyone that way for a long time. There's almost a palpable affection towards JDean. And it's got a touch of sadness to it too. I really enjoyed this episode! Love you Steve!
James Dean what a hunk. This movie is great saw it for the first time a couple of years ago. I always enjoyed old TV shows, and ever since i found your channel I've been watching all these new movies, that are just great. Thanks so much for making these videos I love 'em.
Have you moved into a house? Your spaces don't look that cramped, and the same wonderful movie reviews, that make us fall in love with movies all over again!
I am sure you already know this but, Sal Mineo said that he fell in love with James Dean.. Also, in the scene with the 2 guys and Natalie Wood in the abandoned house, Sal Mineo was having a hard time getting the scene right. James Dean told him to look at him the way he(James) was looking at Natalie Wood. Hence, the very intense eye contact between James and Sal. True Stories according to Sal Mineo.
And he would know. How that love story ever got by the censors, is a miracle. It was so obvious to me. Probably because I went through the same thing when I was that age in highschool. Unrequited love. There is nothing more romantic or heartbreaking, particularly at that age.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Talk about it Steve. The very first time I saw "Rebel…." I was a young teenager. I remember thinking, "Wait, Plato is in love with Jim. But how can this be? This is the 50's?" Mineo stated that it took him a long time to accept James' death. Guess he continued to love him. And I don't blame him. Besides being very talented, Dean was talented, mysterious, brooding and very beautiful.
You noted that James was a comet; however, recollect that Sal and Natalie's lives were both ended prematurely. While the film, of course, stands on it own as a fantasy; in retrospect, listening to their speeches, knowing their respective sad ends, adds an even heightened degree of poignancy.
I agree with the comment that you should have your own show. You're great on camera, you're a great extemporaneous speaker, and you have a wealth of movie history and information from which to draw. What movie fan wouldn't enjoy listening to you? (I know you're probably thinking...well get me the damn show and I'll do it...I'm just saying. I would definitely tune in to watch you)
Oh Bash, you made my day! Thanks so much! I hope this finds you safe and healthy. I appreciate your generous comments more than I can say and hope you continue watching TOQ!!! I love your name! So would Jean! Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!. OXOX TOQ
Is it just me or does Charlie Hunnam ( Sons of Anarchy) look a lot like James Dean? I also see a young Brad Pitt looking much like Dean too. I love all 3 movies with Dean, but East of Eden is my favorite. :o)
@@bovnycccoperalover3579 Probably would have been another Brando, Olivia, Nicholson or Hopkins among other multiple Oscar winners. He had the talent which was already apparent.
He was there alright. Nick was driven and tenacious and tried to get as close to Dean as he could. After Dean's death he got milage out of playing up they're supposed close friendship. he also cozied up to Natalie Wood and eventually to Elvis Presley. . I'm not saying he was a user, he just wanted to get ahead and knew who to get close to in order to get where he wanted to go. He later dubbed Dean's voice in the last scene of "GIANT" , where dean is passed out and mumbling drunkenly into the microphone. Rock Hudson used to say that Nick was a "big man' on campus, who got around. I always liked him and thought he was sexy and a good actor who could do comedy as well as serious roles. He died traically young of a drug overdose. .
Do you do BLU-RAY ˝presentations˝ also? I love old movies, too, its all I ever watch and I collect Blu-rays... and DVDs of course...I cant wait for 4K Blu-ray format to come out...
I often find myself wondering what wound have happened to James Dean had he lived? Would he have had a career similar to Paul Newman’s, that lasted for decades, or would it have imploded early on?
I always felt that we saw all he had. When you read his biographies, especially Kazan's , he was obviously unbalanced and very self-destructive. If he hadn't destroyed himself, sooner or later the studios would have tired of his shenanigans and seen a s aliability, he would have eventually been ousted.
One thing that always bothered me about this movie was Natalie Wood’s dad (the guy from Perry Mason). Their whole relationship was so bizarre. What was up with that?
I think t was to give her something to work with in the dysfunctional parent aspect as well as Dean's and Mineo's. Unaffectionate father. Not unusual, it had been done earlier in "The Heiress" to great effect. Thanks, Steve
Corey Allen..the kid in the chicken race who catches his sleeve in the car door, and plummets over the cliff. Corey went on.. to become a wonderful television director..
A good actor. The scene just before the crash where they share a cigarette and reveal that they actually liking each other and then shrug it off with "It's something to do." Heartbreaking. He was also terrific as the sleazy horn player who rapes poor Clare Bloom in "The Chapman Report" .
Hi Steve, I know I'm in the minority here, but I've always thought this movie is overwrought and melodramatic...and kind of the same for James Dean. He's a ham and comes off as the temperamental brat he allegedly was off camera. (Same in 'Giant'). But as an expression of teen angst, mixed-up emotions and identity, I find 'Rebel' unconvincing. The way Dean and Buzz bond with each other on the cliff before their race - as though what they're about to do really stands for something profound...I don't get it, or why Buzz is then considered some kind of courageous martyr.I like elements of it, and especially Sal Mineo's sensitive performance, and when I catch it on TV I'll usually watch it for a while, but it mostly leaves me cold. You are, however a genius in all your reviews. I think this is the only one of your picks I haven't related to :)
JungleJim0617 I totally agree. "Rebel Without a Clue" is a ludicrously overpraised POS. It's right behind "The Piano" on my list of "Shitty Boring Movies That Way Too Many People Like".

Sal Mineo was clearly in love with James Dean...and it showed onscreen.

You should have your own show! Always enjoy watching you talk about the classics.
isnt he great even if I have seen the movie I watch it again and his reviews are spot on!

Thanks for this excellent look at a tremendous film.

Sal Mineo "he's clearly a homosexual." You are too funny.
Nicholas Ray and this cast; what's not to love? And I think I spied one Nick Adams in the background at the auditorium.

Plato seemed to be looking for a father figure. He kept fantasizing about having a father who was a hero. I don't know if this became sexualized.
