Aloha , thank you for sharing this timeless movie. Believe it or not, I worked with Pinky Lee in the late 1970’s. It was thrilling as he had a TV show when I was a child and I always watched it. Many famous celebrities started in burlesque. Even in his senior years he was still very funny and talented🌟.
A treasure trove of fun. Who knew Stanwyck was such a good dancer/mover. But then she did start in the chorus in New York. And the wonderful Iris Adrian. She's a hoot!!
I absolutely love this film and have seen it many times on several channels including Turner Classic Movies and unfortunately NO ONE has a decent print of it! This film is in bad shape and desperately needs restoration. It suffers from the fate of many old films that were released for television in the 50's and 60's, they were hacked to pieces by each TV station to make room for commercials. That's why it's so choppy and seems to have parts missing. I hope someone finds another print and saves this wonderful film!
Cassandra Richardson, You know who's an icon and is considered the most beautiful woman in God's Creation except Eve? Her name is Louise Brooks. She also started the flapper fashion and the Bob hairstyle.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
High-class this ain't. Here's tough lady Stanwyck in costumes by Edith Head, choreography by Danny Dare, and Iris Adrian in one of her 100 film appearances as a blonde bombshell, Gerald Mohr singing off-key, and Michael O'Shea as a leading man! Jeez, it's fun!
Steve Burstein Yes indeed. Which is why I’m so grateful that the 1932 Film “Rain” starring Joan Crawford was directed just 3 years before that fascist Code went into effect. It’s one of my personal all time favorite pieces of Cinema. For me the film “Rain” is so honest with itself & pays its own respects to the historic WW1 period that the films fictional plot lays play.
@@PurpleCloud619 I love the way Joan looks in "Rain" and what a performance! Had it been an MGM production, she probably would have received and Oscar nomination.
Barbara married Frank Fay, who is in this movie. He was a huge Broadway star & she was still an unknown. They say that the movie A Star is Born, was about them. He was an alcoholic, beat his women, anti-semetic, huge ego, an all around son of a bitch. No one in Hollywood liked him. Barbara's star rose & he faded away. Just like the movie, A Star is Born.
I doubt that "A Star is Born" is about her marriage to Fay. She was not that big in 1937, when the first film was done with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March.
Frank Fay is not in this film, you probably have him confused with the star Michael O'Shea who's the comic ( they do look a little alike). And "A Star is Born" is based on a famous silent star and his actress wife, not Stanwyck and Fay.
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie to the end ! Oh ya I used to watch Barbara Stanwyck in the " Big Valley " back in the 70s . Bionic man ( forgot his real name ) but he was on the TV series as well. There was another really good movie where Barbara Stanwyck was a rich married woman stuck in bed . She had a phobia gets a phone call from a stranger an then ......well....you know the rest.
This is the first film I ever saw with Stanwyck, and was mesmerized. The film itself is pretty awesome, and also made me appreciate older films as well. I haven't seen her other films but this film really showcased her as not only a skilled actress but a classic Hollywood hottie.
@@bobbyshaddoe3004 You absolutely HAVE to see "Double Indemnity" , made around the same time as this. It's one of her best, and she's SO evil in it. It also stars Fred McMurray and Edward G. Robinson. A real gem!!
They used the word Gunsol at about 24 minutes, that and the Maltese Falcon , the onty time I have heard it, in the Urban Dictionary ,they only site the Maltese Falcon,

Barbara Stanwyck is absolutely fabulous in this movie! And Pinky Lee as Mandy the
comic is absolutely adorable! 😊😊

There's a difference between a mystery and a horror
Really appreciate those comments that add info on the actors
Thanks !
Barbara Stamwyck, was a great actress, and she could break dance also, awesome!!!

Were you waiting for the spin too like I was? Cause she definitely did the damn thang! lol
One of the best of this genre. Thoroughly enjoyed this; thanks so much!
1:17 Love how the cop just naturally pockets most of the sleazoid's good cigars.

All the comics had worked in burlesque. Those were real routines, cleaned up for the film censor.
Thank you.
Really good who done it 😃
TALENT TO THE INFINITE ULTIMATE

She's brunette here.
Her Mother was Jewish , But she was raised Christian
Somehow this 40s movie has a little of the pre-code flavor, though it was released nine years after the code crackdown.

Only thing lacking is the varied odors of the "Craft"!

ladies of the 1940s were such gorgeous and well dressed with mink coat,

I think it's called Sorry, Wong Number
Is that the same Pinky Lee who had a children's TV show in the 50s?
MsLeesan Hello, it’s He, his name is Pinky Lee!
The very same.
I love Barbara stanwyck
Have you seen her film, "Always Goodbye"? It's available on here.
Love This Movie With Barbara Stanwyck.

Gypsy rose lee was billed in lady of burlesque but i dont know who she played. Barbara Stanyck played the lead.
Gypsy Rose isn't in the film. She wrote the novel on which the film is based. "The G-String Murders."
Gypsy Rose Lee is a icon ❤
Dirty Martin, No she's not, but Louise Brooks is.
Great who dun it
the other posting of this movie is better quality
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

No, LaVerne is reading the riot act to Gerald Mohr and definitely says “gunsel/gunsol”.
@@kimdorris8106 You're right, I replayed it!!
It means gunman. Usually a hired gun in the mob used as bodyguards, for strongarm work and occasionally to rub someone out.
america was still at war.
I'm so gay, but I love Biff
Biff is played by a guy so your statement makes no sense.
