It was called Rynn’s Might. Even when the tracks were clogged, it opened its hatches, and a bunch of Orks wanting to loot it came in. It proceeded to detonate its reactor, killing every Ork within fifteen meters. The Crimson Fists actually managed to recover the Machine Spirit, and are currently looking for a vehicle worthy of it.

Otherwise, it's less a euphemism and more an actual belief that any and all technology have an animistic spirit as part of an extension of the Machine God, known as "Motive Force". Said spirits literally need to be appeased through ritual and occasionally sacrifice, if the machine is expected to work. Everything from Voidships to Baneblades and Heavy Bolter to Boltpistols are believed to literally have a spirit. It's also the reason why Imperial denizens are forbidden from using Xenos tech. The Imperial view is that xenos techs aren't built or used with the Machine Spirits in mind and thus are heretical.

I think when you're a slow painter (like me), even a small mini takes a while to finish, and therefore you need to keep your motivation and focus up throghout. With vehicles and large minis that is multiplied by a factor of like 100...

    • @jamminghaze
      @jamminghaze 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Do it 10 times in a row, you might get faster or if you're really, what you call slow, you're making those details even more crispier, and you're truly never ready. Every stroke counts and God wont forgive you if go out lines. Experience is the best teacher. Making different styles might give you insight of what you like and what you don't. It's clear ya like smooth surfaces and clean details and struggling in free hand and going over lines. delicately in order, you must break your habits and learn new ones. GG GJ joy!❤

even without sponges, you can use a large crappy/sacrificial brush and stipple (stabbing motion) the paint over the large flat areas to get a relatively smooth finish versus just brushing normally, helping to match say, a rattlecan base coat. I was very much the same (finding painting vehicles a chore), but then I started to actively eliminate painting steps and techniques in all my painting and replace it with something else that's more clever, quicker and more fun than basecoating, washing and layering. One thing that really helped me and actually made me LOVE painting vehicles was watching a LOT of scalemodeling videos here on YT. There are SO MANY techniques and products over there that are fun, easy to do, yield amazing and realistic results, and that can also very easily be incorporated into our wargaming painting niche. It even made me approach other minis apart from vehicles differently, and now I can much more focus on the fun of painting and also immensely speed up processes.
That stippling technique was amazing, BTW. And those retro flames are BOSS! Awesome result, mate!

When you said that you think about who the miniature is and what their motivations are and how long they will last in battle - this really resonated with me, as I do just this and I think what I was going to call "narrative painting" really drives me to create a better paint job, and it's easier to place dents and scratches by story rather than just randomly deciding.
By contrast, however, I *love* painting vehicles and terrain. Story doesn't need to end at personal narrative - you can ask yourself the same questions, and in my opinion, there are more things you can ask yourself about vehicles and terrain. "Who uses this?" (soldiers? police?), "Who maintains this?" (specialist experts? advanced users? idiots?) "Where is this deployed?" (urban? marsh? volcano?) "What's wrong with this vehicle?" (caught a shell near the track and it keeps falling off. concrete is cracking as the inner steel reinforcement is rusting away) "What workarounds are people using to deal with the faults" (desire paths) "Who loves this, and how do they express it?" (the freehanding work like on the side of the enola gay). There's _so_ much you can think about for a simple vehicle - and you went absolutely whole hog for this tank.
Anyway, great job on this tank. So many cool techniques and it was a joy to watch you work. I hope that you continue to enjoy building vehicles and working on that pile of *opportunity*!

Try watching some videos from armour modellers and checking their forums. They're big on adding weathering and details to add visual interest and tell a story. Plenty of these tanks and their crews have rich history behind them which the modellers really get into, trying bring to life.
Perhaps this could provide the inspiration you need to get excited about 40K vehicles and create your own stories that excite you the same way infantry models do.

  • @RavenSaint1

I think, even after 2 years, there are merits to both techniques. Airbrush and rattle cans allow for faster base coat and larger areas to be done faster and less time waiting for the first paint to dry or end up with brush strokes and dry/wet layer edges on the base coat. That is if you have a quick drying paint you are using for base coating with paint brush. Also, you can do quick and dirty painting of vehicles you don't feel like decorating beyond base color and minor details.
For brush painting the whole model, without rattle can base coat. Having self leveling paint that is thin enough to not fill in details, but thick enough for a single base coating is important. Then you can detail the heck out of the vehicle with smaller and smaller brushes. Finishing off with what probably amounts to diorama sorts of details for those who love the gritty looks of armies on the move.
I hope that many painters will find the joys of creating some awesome vehicles.

Very nice! I'm painting my first vehicle which is also my first model and although it's only 70mm. I do feel the need for an airbrush as if you are not really good with a normal brush it shows. Like some areas of the paint is raised above the others as I was moving it to get a total coat. However, I can just paint over that another color to make camo.
As for Primarus in land raiders yes no reason not too and I'd say the same for land raiders in Imperial Guard.

Nice work and I've been looking for non-airbrush tank help for a while now. I just never liked the end appearance of airbrushing. Now, I just need to paint.... 3 of these.... Only in white, I made the silly decision to invert the pallet for all my LRs. Yet to decide whether I apply that to the Mastodon and Fire Raptor yet. But first, the BGV and new Templars from the box lol

To be fair airbrushing isn't always the best and as seen isn't the only way.

Awesome video, mate- and can I say just how fantastic the whole panel looked that you showed between 11:07-11:10? The entire tank came out great, but that part really stood out to me. I subbed to your channel a few months ago, and you’ve quickly become one of my favorite hobby/painting channels. Your content is really helpful, your stories are relatable, and I always end up smiling (if not laughing) at some point in your videos. It seems like you have almost as much fun making them as I do just watching them, and that’s important to me. Nobody wants to watch a person who seems like the whole thing is a chore. Thanks for all the work you put in, and I wish you tons of success! 👍🏻
PS- Thanks for the suggestion for those stencils- I’m going to their website later today to see what they have that I can use.

You should give the Artist Opus channel a look, Byron does some great vehicles by brush, stippling mostly.

You bring up a great point about Primarus and transports Jay. My friends and I have have developed a work around for this GW stupidity. We ignore that rule. It's so much more fun.

Primaris marines have their own transports though.

They have ai in them and you can think about what battles they've been in ,what commanders they've had ,the damage caused by the environments they've been in and so on.
