      Catalytic heaters are available commercially at camping equipment stores.
      They use propane for fuel which, when burned, gives off C02 and H20. They require some fresh air for safety and could cause moisture build up in a small setting, like a tent. These problems are alleviated by having some ventilation.
      The BTU's and burn times are listed for the various models... usually something like 5,000 to 10,000 BTU's with burn times of 6 to 8 hours on a regular canister.
      If you are looking for larger units, then there are heaters designed for contractors that put out much more heat and use BBQ type propane tanks.

    I used a can with wick using 90% rubbing alcohol and the can was 1.5 inches tall and about 4 inches diameter and it ran for 2 hours if I'm remembering right. The longer it ran an I used a sheet metal floor heat duct boot with a 4 inch 90 degrees elbow on it with a thermometer hanging at mouth. Temp was 350 degrees for long time but I put 2 cans under the boot and temp was 450 degrees. I added an old computer fan that was 12 volt DC, an wired it with rocker on n off switch and a 9 volt square battery that turned the fan using it 8 hours per day the battery lasted over a week. The rubbing alcohol bottle lasted 2 an half days running 2 can in it. Well worth it to watch the safe emergency heat teaching grandson other ways of making heat. Plus him being 8 years old he loved using my tools to make it. I used heavy wood around left an right side and back of heat duct boot so it wasn't too heavy, that's very important to make sure it can not fall over. Tip if you get soot from burner since I use wicks. Means the wick is to long so cut it down some till it stops smoking.needs to be 1/4-3/8-1/5 inch depending on type of wick you are using. Many videos on here on making wicks during a emergency such as shoe strings and ropes.

    As a pocket warmer this process works great and heats up the metal enclosure up to 60 degrees celsius for 12 hours just on fumes. But at larger scale you downgrade efficiency, flames are still visible and that means an ordinary burn is taking place. Keep away of these dangerous experiments. Buy an old Kerosine heater if necesary and use bio-ethanol of high grade.

  • @ifell3
    @ifell3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Ozark Trail camp heaters are $50 and much safer than anything you cobble together.
    Buddy heaters are $70 if you want the name brand.
    Enclosed, neat, hard to tip, tip sensor that cuts the propane flow... oxygen depletion and CO sensor that shut them off.
    Just buy one and be safer. You can hook them to a larger propane tank if 4 to 8 hrs of heat is not enough for you.

    • @chefbperez
      @chefbperez หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Indeed but without propane you have no heat. It's good to learn how to make heat in a pinch.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chefbperez most of these cobbled together heaters are literally an accident waiting to happen. In a tent, one bump and they fall over,,,,stiff breeze fluttering the tent...they fall over. Any with liquid fuel will spill the fuel upon a wicking surface (the floor or ground) and even supply the nice flame to light it.
      Commercial stove cut the flame if tipped, cut the flame with O2 depletion and are typically very hard to knock over....requiring less don't go near it room.
      Of you want to ensure you have heat without technology, then a small wood stove in a flame retardant canvas tent with a stack.
      If you're in a polytaffeta nylon tent, any flame heater is typically a bad idea...even propane. Better to boil water outside, pour it in a stainless bottle, slip it in a tube sock and place it between your thighs in the sleeping bag to warm your arteries. Heat for 8 hours.

      Isopropanol worked well for me. If your home is Insulated you can go from 55 degrees to 68 degrees. Soot was not a problem. On Mine I used a thin sock for wick and kept the cans close in size to limit wicking. A can inside of a can the inside can has top on but bottom cut out. Wet the top and one edge of bottom to start. It needs a more blue flame. Mine burns lower when fuel runs low giving a blue flame. Runtime 1.5 hours

    Mr. R. I live off the grid up north. On very cold nights my under-house equipment room is still vulnerable to freezing. I need ten hours of heating time. But the room/closet is small. Is your cat heater safe? How long will 6 oz burn? Can I use kerosene?

    The Japanese use lots of catalytic heaters to heat their homes. They are very common and use kerosene as a fuel. They emit no fumes and are very efficient. They still need ventilation as they can burn up all the oxygen in the room.

      Nope... i had one from france.... they use them alot there too
      .
      They are amazing and i didnt even buy the premium odorless fuel
      .
      .
      Just regular karosene from the red diesel depot
      .
      .
      The first couple of mins smells a bit so you just light it outside
      .
      Once its hot it pumps out 2.2kw of odorless heat,
      plus infra red radiation as a bonus,
      And they dehumidify a damp cold room really well for extra bonuses
      .
      There awesome

      A catalyst by definition is a substance that facilitates a chemical reaction without being consumed itself.

      @TheChipmunk2008 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As Hoy has said, a catalyst is not consumed, but the last reaction with stainless steel is normal combustion, with the mesh acting to contain the flame within, similar to a miner's safety lamp. Still very useful and efficient

      The only way I see is to make it run out of fuel, or cool it to stop the reaction. If you managed to seal it from Air, sure you could stop it, but with the output of this, something to take the heat is needed. Probably better to run a test to determine consumption and fill only to last the desired time

      A person could make the outer reflector sized to fit around the heater, complete with handles on the reflector, so that when you want to turn the heater off, simply put the ends of the reflector together, thus depriving the heater of oxygen, smothering the fire inside.

    I'm fascinated by this concept, and asked a question on the forge-iron version of it. Please help me understand. The bottom container holds the ethanol, and there is a small gap between it and the upper container, which holds the copper? And, due to heat, the ethanol is vaporized and the vapor comes into contact with the copper, where it catalyzes with the oxygen in the air for combustion? Then the heat from the combustion keeps the ethanol hot so it continues to vaporize? Do I have all that right? Спасибо
