      - i own a 2012 XLT F150 Supercrew 5-1/2 bed with 3.5L Ecobeast it has 72K when i bought it so far no problem with the truck, and i would i have to say that Ecobeast engine it's very powerfull. :)

I just bought a 2014 XLT 5.0 supercab , then upgraded the front coliovers and went to the FOX adjustable 2.0 , the truck is now level . ditched the crappy p rated tires and got some 285/70/17 Cooper STmaxx tires , Then upgraded the open diff to a Eaton Truetrac LSD, now i can pull the 47 fuse for the nannys and ABS and have fun in the mud, snow 4x4n at all speeds and dont have to deal with the advancetrac and WSC kicking in, bad thing about the FX4 rear locker is fuse 47 controls it too , so when u pull the fuse the locker wont work and even when it does it will cut out above 30 mph i think , i rather have a good LSD like the truetrac , my truck is unstoppable even in 2wd now ! . Heres what mine looks like www.f150forum.com/f38/my-new-14-xlt-5-0-a-282686/ All in with all the upgrades i did im into it for 34000 Canadian dollars, everything here cost 10% more than the USA , Im going to black out all the chrome this summer and make it look more like a FX4 or STX

Very surprised how quiet they are for a tire that aggressive! , quieter than the 33' Nitto Teragrapplers i had on my 06 f150 . Better in snow and mud than the Nittos too . Only have 3000km on them now but we will see how they wear ? Hope i get as much life as the Nitto tires.

    • @klc317
      @klc317 9 ปีที่แล้ว

RatchetingWrench I've actually driven the base V6 and its not bad at all. Was pretty impressed. You can only get them up to a super cab 4x4 and a 4x2 Supercrew. Once you go into a super crew 4x4 the 5.0 becomes standard.

I just bought a 2000 F150 4x4 5.4, after research it became clear that the 5.4 2 valve is the way to go for the modern trucks.

    - I would get the 5.0. The ecoboost doesn't get as great fuel mileage as Ford advertised. The white is an excellent color choice as is the FX4 package. In terms of longevity I believe the 5.0 will outlast an ecoboost. There are also no turbos on the 5.0 so that is one less thing to worry about failing in the future. Anyway good luck on purchasing your new truck either engine option is great, test drive both and see which one is for you.

    - Got my '14 fx4 in aug and have enjoyed it totally. I have owned ford trucks in my business since 1984. This is by far the best ford I've owned. Ford has done a remarkable job of improving the product over the years. I'm personally encouraged that you buy what you work on. That is a good testimony for anyone looking. My recomendation is:
Buy the TTboost ... consider the 5.5 bed as its turning radius is great. I found you on f150 ecoboost forum, and thanks for the time and effort you put into your work. We all benefit from it.

    - I love the FX4 styling. I had an 03 FX4 with the 5.4l and loved that truck. As far as the motor options, I personally would go for the 5.0l just because I love the sound of the V8. Either way you go, your going to have a winner in my book.

-That's a sharp looking truck! I would go with the v8 and I personally would go with a different colour, white gets dirty quick. I think the truck would look cool in a metallic grey.

    - I have a black 2014 FX-4 5.0 v8 and I love it. It's my second F-150. Things to consider, parking this beast, height of the truck as far as getting in and out. I wish they would put a camera on the front of the vehicle. I have the issue with the bump of the transmission, but thanks to your post I hope to get that fixed. It's the nicest vehicle I have ever owned. I feel safe when driving and love the space of the super crew. I'm sure you will enjoy the truck.

-First off, thank you for all of your informative vids! They're awesome! Second, I like the truck you picked out. A loaded FX4 is one of the better looking trims IMO. Ecoboost all the way! You already know how to prevent the issues that could happen. They're both solid motors though.

    - I drive a grey 2014 crew cab fx4 5.0l 4x4.
Totally happy with it. Doesn’t have as much power as newer trucks in our fleet (all with 5.0l), but currently has 228,000 miles, never had a major problem with it.

    - Love that truck! I have an FX4('10), and I would def. recommend replacing those tires. You mentioned lots of snow/ice where you are and let me tell you they are horrible! even in rain!, and have no place on a 4x4. I would also size the sidewall to a 60/65 (fits a lot better and a better ride) Also would go with the 5.0 instead of turbo unless you are going to lease or trade before warranty exp.
    Thanks for the great vids!!

-The truck you have selected is a fine choice indeed. F150's in general seem pretty bullet proof with what seem to be minor aches and pains of ownership. I'd personally select the very same truck you have shown in this video even with the 3.5 Ecoboost. Despite all of the problems these initially had, the pros outweigh the cons especially since you know what to look for during routine maintenance. The white does offset the smoked lights and fx4 badge very well which, hell, you have to like the way it looks because you will be living with it after all. The interior of that truck seems pretty nice with the center console shift lever that leans a bit to the sporty side. The leather isn't a huge draw back as it would be super easy to clean any dirt and grime off with a paper towel. My brother had an 01 F150 regular cab sport with the 4.2 V6 and that thing took his regular beatings like a champ!

Had a 2011 the exact same you were looking at. -minus the beautiful hid lights
The paint on the rims chipped off after 2 winters
Plugs have to be changed every 60000 km
Did 190000 km 150000 miles no problems accept for the plugs, fan resister chip and brake booster at 190000 km. Traded it inn great beast.
Pricey on gas 13 liters per 100km average
Happy with my Milwaukee fuel impact.

    - First off i'd like to say that I really enjoy your videos. As a tech myself (International Trucks), its nice to see another tech that cares about the product and gives great advice and info for the less informed. As for the truck, it is very nice truck. Love the engine, just a little much for me. I would get the 3.55 if possible. I have 3.31 in my '14 STX Xcab 5.0L. It does fine for me but just seems a little laggy. And i agree with you on getting the 6.5' bed. 5.5' bed is not what I call a truck bed. Just what ever you do get what you want. I settled a little too much on mine and wish I had got the super crew cab I had test drove.

    - I would stick with the 5.0, but as for styling you are dead on! The FX4 is a great looking version, and white is the way to go. I am a Mopar man, but I certainly admit those F-150's are nice looking and nice riding trucks. Thanks for the video man, keep em coming!

-I own an FX4, 2012, 5.0, 5.5ft bed. My only complaint is the 5.5 bed is a tad small but nothing dropping the tailgate and using some straps can't fix. I love the 5.0 and can easily get 14mpg in town and 18 on highway, if you travel at 55mph-60 you can pull 22-23 mpg. I love the engine, sounds amazing and from what i've read the ecoboost doesn't do much better for fuel economy so i'm not actually missing out on much.
Keep up the good work on the videos!
Also mine is flame blue, add in the FX4 package and it is a beautiful truck. Still get comments here and there about how nice it looks.

I have a 2013 exactly as you describe in the Lariat package. But I went with the 5.0 for 3 reasons. 1) They basically have the same power and fuel milage. 2) Keep it simple. (Technology wise) 3. I used to work for a guy who owned a small aviation engine repair/rebuild shop. He always said. A smaller engine making the same power of a larger engine will have to work harder. The harder an engine works, many times means it's service life is reduced.

-I have a 2014 F150 4X4 LWB with the 3.5L ecoboost and have been pleased with the performance so far. Regularly tow 6000+ lbs and the EB is head and shoulders above my old 2007 5.4. I like the FX4 model but cheaped out and bought the XLT. Had the same truck in a 2012 as well and traded for the last year of the steel body because of concerns with aluminum durabilty and repair costs. I would go with a 5.0L if you are not towing as the ecoboost premium will never pay for itself and I had a bad timing chain rattle when I traded the 2012 at 20000 miles. Great videos and buy it if you like it!

-I have a 2013 FX4 appearance package super crew 5.5' ecoboost. Love it. It's my first truck, so it took some getting used to coming from small SUVs and sports cars. Fuel mileage hasn't been as bad as what I read online. Mostly drive conservatively and lifetime average (43k) is about 13.8 l/100 kms. I cant really complain about that. No issues with it up until last week when my air condition compressor let go and contaminated all the lines. Needs everything changed which sucks but that's life. I still have a smile every time I drive it after owning it for 2 years so that should tell you something. Go for it, you won't regret it.

    - i have had 2 5.0 trucks
the first was a supercab 6.5 bed XL with 5.0 vinyl interior and white w chrome package, also 18.5 city and 20.5 hwy mpg
I LOVED that truck, easy to clean seats and white was nice.
    Got totalled by a drunk.
my wife wanted supercrew so i now have an XLT 5.0 5.5ft bed.
the bed isnt really a holdback for me, i run a business and haul plenty.
the extra weight of the truck brought mpg to 16.5 city and 18.5 hwy (fairly big hit on 30k miles per year)
this truck (2012) has 76000 and is in the shop for a steering angle sensor.
6000 miles ago the bulkhead connector was leaking.
This truck is making me anxious for post warranty years, I heavily use my truck constantly with 600lbs of tools on the bed at all times.
Love the room, but i do wish it was a XL for ease of cleaning (leather will be simpler, cloth is annoying and dirty) i do have weathertech floor mats.
I have hauled 8000 lbs to a scrap yard using the supercab, no issues except I wouldve felt safer with trailer brakes!
    hope this helps.

  • @RussellPompa
    @RussellPompa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    - I suggest the 5.0 over the EB 3.5
there really is not that much difference in mpg's, the V8 is an icon in the American automotive industry, it's tested and proven, the crew cab is great, get the ELD with your FX4 though, it will help supplement the 4 wheel drive system, i have always chosen Ford trucks over all other brands, white is a fantastic choice in my opinion, unless you PSG the pedal to the floor often or you pull a heavy Trailer daily the EB will not provide you with the benefits for which is was actually designed. Torque is best for 0-60 times and getting a heavy load moving. the turbo lag for me was a big turn off when i tested it a week ago. if I ever need to "go now" and i stomp pedal down, lag is the last thing i would want to encounter.

-I test drove both the EB and the V8, I immediately noticed a difference between the power of the two engines. I don't tow a lot but I drive many places that have severe elevation changes. During the test drives I was allowed to take them up what I would consider a small but steep elevation change. The EB did good but clearly not as good as the V8. This prompted my to think about what the EB would be like at 100,000 miles. How much power loss would it have? What would it feel like on a steep grade at 100,000 miles? I went with the V8. The FX4 you're looking at is beautiful, white is a good choice and the smoked rims are even better. Good luck and keep up the great vids.

    - I love my 2014 FX4 ecoboost with the appearance package. I highly recommend the FX4. The ride is nice. On flat ground I 22-40+ mpg on cruise doing 35-55mph. Add hills amd stops and the mpg drop to 14-18mpg highway. My city mpg are 13-16 mpg. I bought the truck to haul the family on road trips, large light loads from the hardware store and tow my muscle cars. I haven't towed yet, but with about 500lbs in the bed it acted the same as empty. The ride is quiet on the most rough asphalt roads. The Sony system is great but the bass is not going to blow your ear drums out. I love the MyTouch radio and with navigation the additional apps are mind blowing, like see doppler radar on the screen. The truck rocks! I hope you enjoy whatever you buy. Good luck and thanks for the great videos.

With the 8 foot box I could throw my 4 wheeler in the back and go without hooking up a trailer. I also hauled my motorcycle around when needed. I am not a fan of the Ecoboost but that is more of a personal choice. I am old school and see turbos as an added expense in maintenance. Good luck with your decision. I enjoy your videos.

Sandman3332 You said the magic words *for years. This is the first year that the hole body of the f150 is aluminium. There is no spot welds but rivets and adhesives now holding the truck together. Only time will tell if there design will work or not.

matthebest018 Um... Adhesives? I hope Ford did their homework on that... Ferrari had a string of vehicle fires in 2010 Ferrari 458s b/c the adhesives they used. There are several spectacular examples on TH-cam. The cars were recalled as a result and mechanical fasteners were used instead of the adhesives.

-I have a 2011 Lariat ecoboost super crew 6.5 bed and I love it. The challenge is in learning to drive and maximize mpg with a turbo engine. Also, in the winter when the turbos spool up and the torque comes on the wheels can get a little loose. Having said that I love how it lugs through pretty much anything. I can go up 6-7% grades at highway speeds and it stays in 6th gear without any effort at all. The other thing is fuel, in the rockies we have 85 octane as the base, not recommended to be used in the 3.5. That leaves more expensive mid and premium to buy (not so bad now). Buy it and the engine choice is yours to decide. I would definitely get the rubber mats for the interior for where you live.

    - I bought a 2013 Screw 4x4 with the 6.5 foot bed with the 3.5 EcoBoost in Race Red. A great truck for my daily driving, but MPG suffers on the around town loop. 22+ MPG on the highway on the flat Ohio roads. The only thing I don't like is the chrome package, but that's what I got. The truck is surprisingly fast with that boosted 6 banger! Love the old man step in the tailgate too.

-I definitely would not go with the ecoboost; I'd stick with the 5.0. The mileage between each engine is really only 2 mpg(16 vs 18 combines) from the fueleconomy.gov website. If its driven 20,000 per year, and kept for 7 years... that's just over $1400 with Gas at $2/gal. For that money over 7 years, I would think the longevity of the 5.0 makes up for sunken cost of gas mileage. Plus, the meaty motors are that much more fun to drive! I've got a 2010 with the 3rd gen 5.4 that has 134,000 miles. It drives like new!

    - I've had both a 2011 supercrew xlt with the 5.0 and now drive a 2011 supercab xlt with the 3.5. Both race red color. The supercrew was a nice truck but only had a 5 1/2' bed which I needed bed space more than passenger space. Went with the ecoboost to see what all the talk was about when I traded the 5.0 in. Overall pretty close in gas mileage with maybe 1.x mpg difference for my personal driving. About 15-16mpg with about 50/50 highway/city driving daily. Can't go wrong with either engine especially since you have the inside track on any info due to your job. Just comes down to if you want that signature v8 growl or not. FX4 trim looks good in any color but I'm a sucker for chrome so I stick to XLT package. Good luck and early welcome to the F150 family I hope!

    - You're looking at the same package and set up as I want. My biggest hang up is whether to 5.5" or 6.5" bed. I personally think the 5.5" has better proportions but I am concerned with that depth for hauling bicycles and such. As for the color, I like white, my 2004 Mustang GT is white. I can tell you this about white, it can be hard to keep really really clean. I've found that reds and silvers tend to be the easiest to keep clean.

    - although you will have many comments about this truck or any other choices you may have, it is ultimately up to you to decide what is best. Meaning, how you plan to use the truck, what color and options are available for a particular truck you find you may like. That being said, the white may cause you issues. Since you are in a snowy area, the stuff the DOT guys put on the roads will turn that white to a nice shade of yucky light brown very quickly. The grey fender flares will not stay that factory color very long unless you constantly put something on it to bring back the color. The projector headlights look awesome on these trucks. The biggest suggestion I can make after the initial statement is to find a truck with options that you want. As a Ford mechanic, you know how to fix those things that can and will go wrong with it over time. Now for the engine, I have always been a huge 5.0 fan, but I own a brand new 2014 F150 with the Ecoboost and absolutely love it. I think it could have actually outpulled my 2001 7.3L F250 because of the quicker spool of the turbos, not to mention the cost of diesel versus gas (I traded my 2001 F250 in for the 2014 F150 Ecoboost). With all of this being said, when you see a particular truck, you will say, that is the one I want. I did when I saw my new truck and I have not regretted since. Good luck in finding a 2014 and enjoy it no matter which one you decide to buy.

    - I have a 2013 FX4 supercab in black with the ecoboost. Mine also has the leather and its really nice compared to the cloth. I haven't been able to really drive a 5.0 so I can't comment on that engine. I can say that the ecoboost pulls from the get go, can be tuned for way more performance and economy with an aftermarket tuner. I personally have left it alone as it is plenty strong enough for me. So much torque down low that in city driving you don't need to get your foot in it. Summer time average 16.5 with 75% city driving and have hit 22 on a 80 mile trip keeping speed down around 70. The faster you go the more your mileage comes down. Hard to tell winter time since I use the remote start. It does burn more during winter time. Up until 2013 I worked in the Dearborn Truck plant body shop that assembled the bodies before paint. I can tell you the process is amazing how consistant we build these trucks. There is 5 laser checks that the units go through as it is being built up and if it fails in 1 area the line is stopped and a quality person comes out and visually inspects the truck. Many times its glare or oil on a panel but if there is a defect the truck is scraped. Its cheaper to scrap out a full cab in bare metal than a completed unit of the line. You should know more about the motors with what you see there at the dealer as far as repairs. Good luck.

My last truck before my F150 was a Dodge Ram 1500 Sport with the painted front end. I would never get another truck with a painted front bumbet. I had that truck for 15 years and by that time there were numerous chips in the bumper from rock and had started rusting in the chips and I live in AZ. The paint scheme, wheel color, and blackout option on the lights look sharp on this particular truck. I don't know much about the ecoboost option with the turbo and DI, but I do remember your earlier video regarding the cons concerning the problems Ford has regarding the servicing or lack there of for the carbon build up on the ecoboost vehicles. You'll have plenty of room for your dog's inside and you won't have to get frustrated with always having to leave the tailgate down when trying to carry something in the bed. You might not think the leather is necessary but imo it's much more comfortable then the cloth and will hold up better. -If it's what you like, I say go for it. It's a great looking truck. The 3.5L Ecoboost is a good engine, although most comments about choosing the 5.0 aren't completely missing the mark. But we all know you won't have trouble getting any problems taken care of and I might be mistaken, but aren't most of the issues that plagued the first few iterations of the EcoBoost taken care of now? I think the only thing the truck needs as far as styling are tinted windows and something to protect all that white paint up front. Might not have as much of an issue sitting higher off the ground, but I've got a little white Corolla and the front end is just peppered with black spots from small chips of paint coming off.

    - I thought I would give you my thoughts as I have an '09 FX4 in Oxford While - super crew but with the 5.5' bed.
Don't be put off with the white. The white will not attract more bugs or rocks than any other color! But yes, they are more visible. I also have the big tow package mirrors which seem to collect just as many bugs as the nose. I only detail my truck once a year in the spring, but will wax the nose and mirrors more often - like at every other wash. With the good coating of wax and a mild scrubby pad it cleans up very easily. I also do a chip patrol in the spring with a bottle of touch-up paint - they use nasty gravel type anti-skid around here and the chips are unavoidable.
I've had many white vehicles and what I like most is they don't really look dirty when they are - that is until you wash it then you see the difference.
I have the luxury package (which it looks like that truck may have) and it was worth every penny for the upgrade in my opinion.
The 6.5' box would be nice - I find the 5.5' box wanting sometimes and I don't think there would be much difference in parking.
Can't say anything about engine choice being I have the last of the 5.4L
Hope this helps some - looking forward to what you decide to go with!

I am a fan of the white and but, partial to a V-8. The fact that you work on them on a regular basis to be would be a major factor as to which is more reliable in your eyes as you will be the one servicing and maintaining it.To me if it truly suits your needs, power, fuel economy, passenger capacity, infotainment system, bed capacity, ride quality and cup holder size /position. You may chuckle about the cup holder but that and how easy seat belt buckles and where it comes across you will be increasingly important each time you drive it. Just a few thoughts to consider. - I just ordered a 2015 f150 supercrew xlt 4x4 with the new 2.7L v6 with the xtr package. 2014 sounds like the way to go due to the fact that they have brand new ones sitting on the lot that dealerships want to get rid of. i only got a 2015 because my cousin owns a ford dealership near me and gave me a wicked deal on a 4 year lease. i have driven a 2014 xtr ecoboost and they ride very smooth and pretty quite stock. i am always impressed with ford and their f150. a Fx4 is also the best trim package to get due to the fact that you can get a shifter in the center console and leather seats, neither are that important but make they make the interior look nicer and its more comfortable shifting with a center console shifter then a shifter in the steering column. also i would get the 3.5 ecoboost because it does put out a decent amount of power (enough for what i need) and it also gives you decent fuel economy. if your worries about stone chips on the front for your car 3m makes a clear tap/vinly wrap type self adhesive tap that you can put on the front of the hood to help protect from stone chips. good luck with your choice.

    - I have been looking and test driving F-150 for the last 3 months trying to find the best options at the best price. The particular F-150 you are looking at is great. Being a Ford tech you get the employee pricing and obviously maintenance is not an issue. I bought used as I could not afford the $43-45K price tag for new. I bought a 2011 Ford F-150 FX4. It has the upgraded interior and the 302A package. My truck unfortunately has the 5.5' bed. I have been watching your videos as I traded my 2007 Ford Exploder in on this truck (replaced the tranny three times over the last year on the exploder). I avoided the 6 cylinder based on your recommendation about the carbon build up on the valve bodies. I also saw that there were some recalls on the 6 cylinders. Even though the 6 cylinder turbo is supposed to be the better engine for power and towing I went with the proven 5.0L as the engine of choice. Nothing beats a V8........Plus if i need to tow i still have my F-250 Super Duty to take care of that. Oh....the minus of this truck which is really the only complaint that I have are the step rails. They SUCK, they are to tight to the body and it feels weird getting in and out. I noticed you didnt really get the interior and i notice that the truck you were looking at has the full touch screen that is great choice. I know that if you buy that truck you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

I have an 08 Lariet Supercrwew 4X4 with the 5.4L 3V. short bed (bought labor day 2008), oversize off road tires and 20" chrome rims. Its been a great truck, only have 31K miles. My biggest issues were the front brakes over heating and warping. Transmission went out and was rebuilt, but that was due to a bad programmer. (no more programmer) Upgraded all 4 rotors and pads with slotted and drilled rotors and now it stops like a car. CAI, and Exhaust. With a big truck you need a big non turbo engine. I think Ford still has some tweaking to do on the Ecoboost before it becomes truly reliable. The enjoyment of owning a Ford is having a good dealership that treats you right and takes the time to physically sit down and discuss your vehicle's needs. Keeping mileage low, plan on towing Travel Trailer when I retire in about a year and it is a perfect tow vehicle.

--My boss has a white 2011 fx4 crew cab with the ecoboost and 81,000 miles. It's been a good truck until recently the radio made a popping sound and stopped working and it has a slight coolant leak by the expansion tank.
We also have several fleet f150's single cab, long box, xl package with the 5.0. The highest mileage unit has 150,000 miles and we have had zero issues with this motor. We typically average 17-19 mpg with a bed cap and parts. If it was me I would go crew cab fx4 in white, 6.5' box, no nav, with the 5.0 the ecoboost is a strong engine but unless you are doing heavy hauling or towing 5.0 is the way to go, at least with the 2014's. - I have a 2013 FX4 supercrew with the 6.5 Bed. I like it a lot. I got the Supercrew to replace my single cab F150 after I got married and realized baby seats didn't fit too well in the single cab and bolting them in the bed was unsatisfactory (even though that may be useful when they are teenagers). My comments on it would be to inspect the fit on the doors and tailgate. I ordered the factory spray in liner and it rubbed the tailgate to metal. I have enjoyed this truck immensely. Parking lots can be a drag in cities with the 157" WB. She just takes a little bit of planning when driving. Camping was a lot of fun. The all weather mats the FX comes with are nice. The black interior showed a lot of dust from camping. The blacked out lenses with HIDs look sharp and cause the BMW guys I work with to look longingly at her. The 5.0 has a good sound to it when you want it and is quiet the rest of the time. I was hesitant for the Ecoboost Because of the 11'-12' problems with them. I plan on owning this F150 until parts can't be gotten for it. I'd say go for it, the only limitations are ground clearance and turn radius when off road or in parking garages. Thanks for your videos, they are entertaining and educational.

-I was a porter at a Ford dealership for a little over a year. As a porter I did ALOT of driving in all the different vehicle, my favorite being the F-150's. My personal favorite trim level is the platinum. My next choice would be the Fx4 only I like the dark candy red color. I think you should get it! However if it was me I'd go for the 5.0 liter engine, they just sound amazing. I'm not longer working for Ford because I'm going to school to be a certified mechanic! Actually just started school today!

    - My wife almost bought an FX2 just like it. She absolutely fell in love with it! I was partial to it because of the Ecoboost. Lost of room for improvement with just a few upgrades. Not really sure how the 5.0 would do in comparison?

-I like that truck, exactly what I am looking for when I upgrade to a newer F150. I like having the larger fuel tank with the longer bed. Also love your videos, they have helped me immensely! Thanks!

I have the 2012 ecoboost. I love how the truck handles, like a car! And the ecoboost is better on fuel than our last v6 minivan, which needed about a mile of room to pass anything, but not the ecoboost, tons of torque and power! Really glad to have this truck.
