Had a 2018 F150 5.0 from new. The truck was absolutely fantastic and is the reason I’m going to be replacing it with a 2021. My truck unfortunately was totaled in a wreck, but it protected me and allowed me to walk away without even a scratch.

I have a 2018 xlt and its the best vehicle ive ever owned. I didnt know about the 5.0... review channels lead me to believe ford only does v6. But, i lucked out and got the 3.5l ecoboost at least. Had the truck for a full yr as of friday. Nearly 100k miles, doesnt skip a beat. I keep having nightmares that big blue (thats what i call her) gets totaled during my 21.5 mile commute. Sucks that yours got totaled... id literally give up on life if my beautiful girl ever got totaled!

We bought a one owner 2015 F-150 Lariat with 76,000 miles in March 2021. It was in pristine condition. I did a carbon treatment on the Ecoboost engine and it was clean as where the spark plugs. I put catch cans on as a precaution but we love this truck.

The big thing with those 5.4s is maintenance and especially oil changes. Extended oil changes can destroy those engines. The engine gets dirty, oil passages get blocked, and the timing gets thrown off. Then the cam phasers get out of sync and the engine commits suicide. Those 5.4s will last a long time if they stay clean.

I have owned a 69 f-100 , C6 auto, swb for over 41 years. It has a 300 cu. in. straight 6 motor. Avge. Yearly maintenance cost: $100.
It's got well over a million miles, but sad to say l can't prove it. It has turned out to be a a very good truck. Lil motor had enough power to pull a 16' trailer loaded with a early model Jaguar to deliver in El Paso, Tex. then went on to Douglas, Arizona in 1986. The total round trip was over 2,000 mis., used 1 quart of oil. Avg. speed 65 mph, never overheated, brought back my mom and dad safe and sound. Round trip mpg : 12 mpg. The only thing lacking: AC. but the delivery was made in Nov. so everything was Ok. I still have it. It's staying in our family. I wish Ford still made trucks as lasting as this one.

Bought my '17 f150 xlt supercab 4x4 5.0 in early '18 as a brand new "leftover." There she was just sitting in the middle of the lot SURROUNDED by 2018s! So... I rescued her. 10k off msrp and they even threw in a bedliner.
Absolutely amazing truck. One odd issue... at about 500 miles I noticed an oil leak just inside of the right rear wheel. First thing I thought?? Uh oh... rear axle seal!! Nope... leaking shock absorber. Didn't even bother to bring it in for the under warranty repair. Just bought a new shock at the parts counter and replaced it myself. Done.
Truck is now getting close to 100k... and has had zero issues besides a new battery this past summer. Great, great motor. So smooth but when you need it?? 385 horses ready to GO!!

Some years back I was in the market for a used truck, a few F150s came up, and I ended up buying a 2003 F150 Lariat, it already had around 160k miles, but it was a very good deal and the truck seemed in good cosmetic and working conditions, I didn't know at that time, but I was buying one of the best and most reliable Ford engines, it went to give me more that 300k miles before I had to redo the engine, I remember my neighbor across the street bought a used 2005 F150, the engine didn't go pass the 100k miles.

Some rust issues on the rear quarter by the bumper, but for 20 year old vehicle, that's not bad.

I put over 400k km’s on that truck doing a lot of heavy towing and in all those km’s the only repairs it needed - outside of regular maintenance - was 1 a/c condenser, a starter and a front locking hub assembly. Incredible reliability and even the body held up great with no rust on the fenders, cab corners, rockers or gas tank straps ( I live in eastern Canada where we have road salt on the roads for 5 months of the year ).

These lists don't take into account owner maintenance. The newer engines need regular maintenance or they will have oiling issues. I hear all these horror stories about the 5.4 but almost every one I've seen that's failed was due to oil changes not done regularly and people not servicing the cam phasers when they needed it. My 4.6 has 145,000 miles on it with no issues and my dads had almost 300,000 when he killed it running it low on oil.His 2008 5.4 was beat to death and when the cam phaser went he ran it till it blew. He kept saying it was an exhaust leak even after I told him to get the cam phaser looked at.

Bought my grandson a 2006 w/5.4L. 1.) did not ask enough questions; and 2.) did not do enough research on this year. It has been a small money pit, first, it had been in a front end collision that resulted end some suspension damage; and 2.) it is high mileage and stuff is wearing out. This biggest issue currently is the transmission shift cable/linkage! Wish I could afford to get rid of it!

I have a 2006 FX4 too, the shift cable has to be pinned/tied away from the muffler, often if mechanics work in the truck down there they leave the cable loose and then days/weeks later it gets burnt. I learned the hard way but as long as you make sure is not touching the muffler it's fine.

The first two months after he purchased it, it was in the shop three times because of the engine and some electrical issues. I bought a 2010 F-150XL 2WD with the crew can that has the standard 2 doors and the 2 half doors. The only major-ish issues are the center link as well as the the idler and pitman arms that need replaced, along with the rear shock absorbers. Aside from a tune-up and standard maintenance, I've had no major problems with it. Bear in mind, this was a state vehicle that I got in a bid for $9,000 even, and it MSRPs at around 30k brand new, and the resale value if they're in nearly pristine condition, is anywhere around $12-$15,000 used. This thing has just around 110,000 miles on it, and hasn't really given me any headaches yet. The spark plug blowouts were a design flaw that was recalled very early on, and it just requires changing the plugs out to avoid that issue. Ford was aware of it once it happened, and quickly redesigned the plugs, so the parts are there. The same issues were in the 96-99 models with the Triton engine series, so it's nothing new, and again, requires changing the spark plugs to the new design. As others have said, sounds like you got a burnt lemon.

This video offers ZERO insight on the reliability of the F-150 and should not be taken into account when deciding on a truck. Here's what you need to know about the 2004-2010 model years:
    1) 4.6L V8 is a very reliable engine with minimal upkeep however you cannot get one in the higher end trim models.
    2) 5.4L V8 has issues particularly with the timing system. Look for one that's had timing work done with FORD parts ONLY. To make this engine bulletproof, an upgraded oil pump, timing chain & tensioner, and camshaft phasers along with all associated parts will make it run for a long time. 2004 and some 2008 model years had spark plugs which break off. Extracting them isn't too bad of a job if you do it yourself but majority of them for sale now have already had this issue addressed. It's important to use 5w-30 instead of the 5w-20 which was only recommended because of fuel mileage standards. A good quality filter is a must.
    3) 2004-2014 trucks have a rust issue mainly with the rockers and cab corners. Depending on the climate and how well it was kept, it can be a problem. Budget $2-3,000 to fix or just leave it if it doesn't bother you. Front lower bumper and the rear bumper like to rust out as well but those are easily removable and can be painted to look new again.
Best bet would be to look for a well maintained truck that's had timing work done already. A nicely equipped and maintained 2009-2010 truck is the best bang for your buck, IMO.
Edit: totally forgot about the 6.2L V8. This was an option which many people did not opt for. With that being said, all you need to do to keep this running is change the oil regularly and that’s it. It’s one of the most reliable engines Ford has put in the F-series! It gas mileage isn’t a concern, this is the one to get if you can find one :)

    Keep it simple.
97-04 ( heritage ), just avoid the the pre 99 with 4.2L V6. Head gasket issues. Nothing major with the V8s.
Avoid all 2004-2010 F150s with the 3V 5.4L, 2009-2010 with the 3V 4.6L. Cam phaser problems which could lead from a simple sensor issue, partial engine rebuild, or a whole new engine. And a nightmare to replace spark plugs as they love to break.
I only flip that gen F150 if it has the old 2V 4.6L or the 4.2L V6.
2011+, I would avoid the Ecoboost engines all together unless it’s under warranty. The n/a 3.7L 3.5L 3.3L V6s, 5.0L V8 and the rare 6.2L V8 are the ones to get. The ecoboosts suffer from excessive carbon buildup, turbocharger issue, and timing chain problems.
There’s people out there that will say they’ve been problem-free with the engines I mentioned to avoid, but those folks don’t realize they are not a majority.

The only major thing that needed replacement was the power steering and the associated steering components that simply wore out at 230k miles. I used nothing but synthetic oil, Mobile 1 oil filters, and replaced it at 3000 to 4000 mile intervals. That avoided the all to common sludging issues brought on by extended oil changes and/or using the cheap Motorcraft oil and filters. If those 5.4 engine got dirty, all kinds of issues could happen.

Jan 2020 Bought used 2016 f150 xlt 302a 5.0 fx4. for 25k. Put 30k miles on it along with upgrades: wheels/tires, shocks, bed matt, interior all weather mats (husky) and hard folding cover, Katzkin leather seating, Hooker cat back 3" exhaust added summit resonator to quiet but is all straight through, KN cold air intake (too noisy) , Luverne bumper guard, Bull 13k winch, Grille, Axiom Headlights, Leveled with Bilstein 5000s, Rear 1" lift and Tuned the 5.0 for about 420-430 hp w93 octane. In houston you never know what apocolyptic crazy may happen so try to be as prepared as possible! 83k miles on it now. Needed starter and caliper froze in 3 years thats it. I have more parts to add but haven't gotten to it. EMP protector ready for install, 1.5 inch spacers and fender flares...maybe not, as neither really offer upgraded utility.

2006 F150 4WD. I changed the plugs after buying it with 108,000 miles. All 8 broke off so it was a pain, but other than that, I have had no issues in the last 4 years.

2021 2.7 XLT Sport Appearance with 10speed. 16k miles and no issues so far. Had a 2019 5.0 XLT before with 30k and had no issues except an annoying tick at idle which I think was a big complaint.

I had a 2005 XLT Supercrew. It was my favorite truck I have owned. It only made it 59k miles though before someone totaled it for me, so the long term may have been a different story. My next truck was a 2006 King Ranch Supercrew. Other than being a 2wd, I loved that truck too. I did trade it off around 100k but I had no major issues with it either. I do not live in the Rust Belt, so I am sure that helps.

the only downside with 2018 and up is if you get the 5.0 they do have an oil consumption problem but its really easy to just make sure you check you oil when youre filling up at the pump

Had a 1999 F150 with the 4.6L. It went to 315K before I sold it, so the engine held up fine. Many ancillary systems broke such as wipers, power windows locks, blend door, other electrical items, and boy did it rust. Went with exclusively Toyota Tundra after that and would never buy anything else.

The worst part of the '04-'09 is the 5.4 3V engine's phasor/oil pressure issues. That engine doesn't have much power and gets terrible mileage. Personally I think the '15-'17 5.0 powered truck is the one to have, even though I have a '15 2.7. It's in the shop right now getting a new oil pan, which is a common issue due to oil leaks. It's been otherwise reliable for 150,000 miles.

    • @GusMahn
      @GusMahn ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@rickflair747 It depends on condition and location, but for a highly optioned truck in good condition, that's probably in the ball park.

Ok, I have a 14 year old 2009 5.4 3V that’s been mostly trouble free over those 14 years and just got over 20mpg on a multi day road trip and gets 18 mpg in everyday driving. I’d say that kind of blows your generic description all to hell. Frankly I’m tired of people bashing the 5.4 when if you take care of them properly they last great.

    • @GusMahn
      @GusMahn ปีที่แล้ว

@@squangan Glad you have a good one, but a lot had 5.4 3v engine issues. I might help that yours is late model. Other than the engine, that generation is a solid truck. My opinion cost me about $6,000 when I had to have an engine put in my 110,000 mile well maintained truck. It actually locked up 200 miles from home with a car trailer on back! Multiple coworkers traded in their 3V's when the ticking started. My 2.7 4x4 Supercrew gets about 22 mpg on the open road. My '05 Supercab 3.73 geared 4x4 never got better than 15 in similar driving.
