    Love seeing these in a church because they reinforce the belief in the Real Presence.
    Their hands are also in two different positions of prayer, and my theory is the one with clasped hands is to receive Communion looking upwards, while the other simply has hands folded across the chest and head bowed to show reverence and signal non-reception of Communion.

      Well hi Ben, and thank you! We have raw footage of many statue restorations, and we keep trying to find time to edit something together. Hopefully we'll have at least one new on in the next week or so. Thank you again! And we'd love to see some of your work, too!

    what the best way or removing all the old paint from a plaster statue

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello World Match! it really depends on how deeply the existing paint has penetrated the surface, and how soft the plaster has become. If it crumbles and turns into powder, we find it best not to try to remove the paint. Instead, using a very fine grade sandpaper (400-600 grit) we hand sand to remove the ridges of the old paint, then apply a primer and then do the artistic painting.
      *IF* the plaster is in good shape, you can consider a gentle biodegradable (usually plant based) paint remover (without harsh abrasives like ammonia, vinegar, paint thinner etc, to avoid serious damage to the plaster). Be sure you do NOT soak the surface of the plaster with any liquid! Very important!
      Do you feel you MUST remove the old paint because it is peeling/chipped? If kijt is smooth, consider whether to paint directly on tp of it. Sanding or removing thick paint can reduce fine sculpted detail. If you are planning to paint over the existing paint, ensure you do not use latex or flat paint on top of glossy oil-based paint. It will not bond.
      We hope this helps. And good luck!

      Thank you! And to answer your question, we used HydroCal plaster for things like the broken corners and to replaster the cheeks and flat areas. We sculpted new fingers and the nose tip out of a product called Apoxie Sculpt. It’s made by a company called Aves in the United States. Hope this helps! 🙏

    Hi! I’m restoring a statue from Virgin Mary. It is life size and it’s my first time doing this. I found that it was repainted with latex paint, believe it or not. It has a thick very textured from brushstrokes. I’m trying to sand it but it is a laborious process. I’m also supposed to restore a similar statue of St Joseph( also life size). I’m planning on using oils after I finish sanding but I don’t know what to use for the gold part on the hem of the dress. Do you have suggestions? Thank y oh and God bless!!!

    I’m restoring an Infant of Prague. What type of paint did you use for this?

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. We typically use acrylic paints, either with a blended primer or by adding a premium primer such as Zinsser. For outdoor statuary we use primer and premium Behr outdoor paints. Hope that helps and good luck with your project!

    Wings colour not looking good, other wise it's beautiful 👍

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Remembering that our task was to restore the work and not to change it, the wing colours were matched precisely to the exact same colour as the original artwork from 100 years ago. But we appreciate your compliment, Suman.

      @@BrushworksStatueRestoration it’s a very nice study. You should try studying the angels and their behavior etc 🤍🕊💪✝️

      @@issachar760 There is no single biblical description of angels, as they are spiritual rather than physical beings. We believe they exist because they are mentioned many times throughout the New Testament. The depiction of wings was devised through illustration to distinguish them from humans. They are described over the centuries as two- or even four-winged beings, but there is no authoritative single description. So to suggest that "angels don't look like that" is interesting. Nevertheless, we appreciate your feedback.

    • @issachar760
      @issachar760 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrushworksStatueRestoration the Bible speaks about cherubs, serafs, zoa’s, archangels and more and they are described in detail, you know the visions of ezekiel. The Bible is authorized. And besides that, you cannot portray a biblical character the way you like just to distinguish them.

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@issachar760 This isn't the place to debate your particular religious beliefs, thanks. But since you say angels do not have wings, yet you reference the Bible (Ezekiel), consider this passage: "While I watched, the cherubim and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them.... These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River, and I realized that they were cherubim. Each had four faces and four wings, and under their wings was what looked like human hands. 22 .." (Ezekiel). There are many different descriptions and visions of angels in the bible. But more to the point: yes an artist can indeed portray biblical characters the way they like. Countless beautiful artworks like the Pieta, the Ascension, The Stations of the Cross and thousands more are expressions from the artist's mind, not from a photograph. These are called artworks. The Sistine Madonna, DaVinci's Annunciation, Jacob Wrestling by Rembrandt, St. Francis of Assissi by Caravaggio. The Holy Trinity by el Greco. Guido Reni's famous depiction of St. Michael the Archangel is his artistic expression. When these works are done for the praise and glory of God, they are not only beautiful, they are considered to be Divinely inspired. If you're interested in learning more, I recommend these sites: bit.ly/3serViL or Ezekiel 10, or Catholic Answers at bit.ly/3HE0ZPS . Finally, remember that we restore artworks and statuary which are created for the Glory of God. If you have issue with these particular statues (created by Tomasso Carli) your argument is with the artist. However, delivering your argument would be difficult since he's been dead for a very long time. Much respect, but we may just have to disagree with each other and not continue an endless debate.
