I have a 2ft plaster crucifix that was damaged in a fire and broken in early 1900s. It was brought up from the church basement and I was asked to repair it if able. The paint was flaking and tested positive for lead. Do you have any recommendations and methods of safety for removing the paint? Any special primer to use to cover it? (You were so gracious to answer my questions before. Thank you for your shared knowledge! )
Hello Melissa. When working with leaded paint, it's important to take proper precautions - particularly avoiding exposure to lead dust by young children. When we work with old statues that test positive for lead, I wear protective clothing (disposable cover-alls and gloves), wear gloves and a proper respirator (you should do better than the standard n95 particulate masks) and I make sure the seal around my face is air tight. A respirator is a mask that you can buy at Home Depot and it has TWO filter cans that stick out the front. This is one example but be sure that whatever you use clearly states that it will filter lead dust ( www.homedepot.ca/product/workhorse-dual-cartridge-half-mask-p100-asbestos-lead-respirator/1001104518 ). We find it is better to avoid sanding if possible, and gently reduce any peel edges with a light sandpaper (ie 400 grit) and once reduced, you can use a thick bonding primer such as Zinsser Peel-stop Plus, made by Rust-oleum. That goes on like a gel and dries almost like a thin rubber coat so it hides the old paint chip lines. It is definitely better to COVER and seal off old leaded paint than it is to sand it off and let the toxic dust float around or settle on things nearby. So a good bonding primer and then a premium paint should work for you. We can only provide general information here as we don't know your specific project details. We urge you to do some reading about safely removing or dealing with leaded paint before you delve into the actual work. It'll help you do it right, and give you peace of mind so you don't have to worry about exposure. I hope this helps! - steve
@@BrushworksStatueRestoration Thank you Steve for your quick response and generous advice! I'm very beginner at restoration, but a decent artist. We haven't handled this piece well so far, but are making new precautions from here forward. I had vacuumed up everything that was coming loose with a hepa filter vacuum. My husband, a carpenter, has the proper mask, which I'll now use. ✔️ I'll look for that paint! God bless you! - Melissa
The face looks great, especially the eyes. Can you tell me if there is any advantage to using plaster over spackle to fill in the unwanted cracks and pitting. I use spackle and seems to work well.
We typically mix and use hydrocal plaster for our projects. But spackling paste or even drywall mud are very close to the same thing. Spackling tends to dry more quickly and shrink less so there is that advantage. I just wouldn’t use it for anything larger… For example, creating or sculpting a hand Would not be advisable. Spackling would be too weak. Hope this helps and thank you for your compliment!
@@BrushworksStatueRestoration Thank you for your prompt reply! Yes, for larger areas or extremities, I have been using Abatron Wood Epox. It hardens to a rock but is extremely lightweight. Maybe someday I will be half as skilled as you two! Will watch all your videos!

Normally we use Zinsser Bullseye primer, then Behr Premium paint. But for specialty areas such as faces, skin tones and flowers Pauline custom blends acrylic paints. Her preferred brand is Liquitex but it must be the professional grade (avoid using student or learner grade paints). Hope this helps! God bless!
Awesome work! I have a question. I am repairing a sacred heart of Jesus statue 36" tall the hand that's pointing to the scared heart is missing. I plan on create an armature first then cover it up with plaster then carve it to the desired shape of the hand.. Is this the correct method? If so what type of plaster should I use? or should I use I different material
Thank you Gabe! You can do it the way you describe, and we would recommend a harder plaster such as HydroCal. But you might also consider making a rubber mould of an identical statue hand and then just casting a copy of it. You’d need to sand it smooth of course but if you’re not an experienced sculptor that might work out much better for you. Another option is to use an epoxy based sculpting material that works like clay. You’d get some time to work it, shape it and smooth it out before it hardens overnight. We often use “Apoxie Sculpt” made by Aves. I hope this helps. God bless and good luck with your restoration! Let us know how it goes ! 🙏

Bonjour Jacqueline.
