If i am correct, this is not a bas (from the italian baso relievo) but a high relief (alto relievo) masterpiece, where parts of the figures are sculpted in the round, completely free from the background plane! An amazing work of art and an absolutely perfect restoration!
Thank you for your kind comment about our work. Bas-reliefs and alto reliefs are very similar, in that the protrusions stem from the background while remaining attached. The notable difference is that high reliefs protrude significantly more than bas reliefs. Whereas you note that "some" parts of the figures here are sculpted in the round, we concede that indeed the more accurate term would have been alto relief. Thank you for pointing that out. We've learned something and will certainly keep it in mind for future videos. 🙏 Ευχαριστώ κ. Πασσαλή !
Very close! It's actually called "MisereRE Mei Deus" (Latin for "Have mercy on me, O God"). It was composed by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri and based on Psalm 51. We think it's a beautiful composition and beautiful performance by the Tenebrae Choir from England.
Hi Norma! For larger surfaces, we plaster with a product called Hydro Cal plaster. It is harder than plaster of Paris, and we find it better to work with. However, if you are resculpting a missing finger, it would be best to use an Epoxy-based sculpting material. We use. .Apoxie Sculpt .. which you should be able to find and purchase online. I recommend you buy the smallest possible quantity because it does go a long way. hope this helps. You’re also welcome to email us directly if you have other questions. Thank you for your prompt reply! The statue is 24" tall, so it's a small piece that needs to be sculpted. I will check out Apoxie Sculpt. I will email you with any further questions.
Hello Jet! Thank you. And Pauline uses a variety of acrylics for indoor statuary, as well as some Behr premium (Marquis) paints, often blending her own colours to suit the project..
I’m not religious but I’ve always loved religious art of this type.
So amazing to see the details come to life...great restoration as always.
Thank you so much, Charlene! 🙏

What plaster do you use to re-sculpt? I am restoring a statue of St. Joseph who is missing a finger. Thank you.

Hello! I really like your videos on religious statue restoration. What type of paint does Pauline use? Thanks!
