  • This video documents the restoration of a badly damaged plaster statue of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The statue was made by Daprato Statuary of Chicago in the early 20th century. This video shows the restoration process in several stages, and we hope you enjoy it! We're a small family operation so we'd really appreciate a like, share or if you subscribe! Thank you! #statuerestoration #statuerepair #brushworks #plastermaster

    Finally! Very inspiring video. Nice how you showed how you resgtore the hand. Also, that after painting it is needed sometimes to re-do certain places...I was wondering whether it is possible. as for the tools: I saw that for lips you use a brushe probably 'adjusted" - I need to adjust mine too, by simply cutting out the hair? Even very thin brushes get hairy pretty fast....

    That's so great!! I have a question, which material would be best to use when creating customization to a statue if it is made with resin? (Customization like adding some elements)

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! And our suggestion for customized sculpting on resin would be a product called Apoxie Sculpt. It's made in the US, but we can get it here in Canada, or it can be ordered online. It goes a long way, so I'd recommend buying the smallest quantity available. You blend two parts together, and you get about 2-30 minutes to work with it. And it sticks to everything..even glass!

    I was wondering why you did not use pegs in her larger part of her torso along with the epoxy glue ...
    Beautiful job ...

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The plaster around the torso breakage was not thick enough to implant sculpting wire or a dowel. Those options are good when dealing with two thick pieces such as a wrist, or neck, arms etc. Still, we felt that the length of the bonded joint was quite long and applying the epoxy PLUS plaster cloth would make it sufficiently strong without throwing off the centre of gravity by adding too much weight higher up. Hope this answers your question, and thank you for the compliment !

    Such exceptional work! Thank you for sharing and teaching this! May I ask what type of paints you recommend for plaster statuary repair? You mention "premium paints." Is that the same as paints used for home projects? And may i ask what shine you recommend, flat, egg shell, satin, etc.? Thank you.

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you Sue B! Depending on the specifics of a project, we use Zinsser primers, Behr Premium (ie Dynasty) paints, and for the artistic work, Pauline uses professional level paints from Liquitex and Golden or other brands that are in the professional class (avoid using "student" level paints due to poor pigments). Keep in mind she usually custom blends many of the colours for things like skin tones and faces, and shadow tones etc. Our work is mostly with flat/matte paints, but in some cases where the statue may be subject to touching we will use low sheen paints or even apply a low sheen lacquer. Hope this helps!

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration

      Hello! Without access to the materials it is of course more difficult. IF you can't access the Apoxie Sculpt, you can try using very basic plaster (Plaster of Paris) and if you find it is not strong enough, we have heard of artists using Plaster of Paris mixed with that apparently helps it hold stronger, but we have not tried it ourselves.
      God Bless and best of luck with your project!

    Hi! I have a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. She's 19 to 20 inches stall and its made of unbreakable fiber but it has a small dot sized hole both of her eyes. One is at the top of her eyebrow and one is at the inner corner of an eye. What kind of material can i use to fix it?

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Without seeing the statue, our best suggestion would be to use a product like Apoxie Sculpt. If you cannot source it, you could also try a common product called JB-Weld. It's also epoxy-based and although we haven't used it, we're told it works much like Apoxie Sculpt for repairing things like pinholes. Hope this helps, and best of luck!

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration

      Silvano, Pauline doesn’t use a single colour. She applies a slightly darker acrylic base coat, but then blends colours to create her own tones. She applies slightly different shades to different areas of the face (please see the 5:00 mark in this video).
      When we have a chance we hope to create a few instructional videos and one would be by Pauline.. showing the process of paint blending and her style of painting faces!

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration

      Hi there. Depending on the statue, we use custom-blended acrylics as well as Behr Marquee paints. Interior or exterior depending on the statue's ultimate location. And while Pauline did add eyebrows, eye lashes would have to stand out three-dimensionally or be painted straight up onto the eyelids. That never looks good.

      Dear "Aspiring:" I offer this response with genuine care and kind intentions. Catholics do not worship statues or pictures or saints. Adoration of the saints has never been and will never be part of Catholic teaching or prayer. We venerate the saints. We are strictly forbidden from worshipping anyone but God. And thank you for quoting from the Holy Bible, (created by, for and under the authority of the Catholic Church). Your misconception is a very common one among people who don't understand the faith of the church which was established by Jesus Himself. But rather than quoting a passage you don't understand, I respectfully ask you to read this article which may help clear up your misconceptions. www.catholic.com/tract/do-catholics-worship-statues . As a Catholic convert from the eastern faith. I really like the religious figures, which is like having a "picture" reminding me of the stories of God's creation and Holy religious significance. I'm sure allot of people,that you Love, have pictures to hold a special time and space in ones life, to remember them by. Same thing with Catholics, remembrance of the Biblical stories. Not pagan worship.

    • @BrushworksStatueRestoration
      @BrushworksStatueRestoration  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@joanahope3013 depending on how porous the statue is, and how thick the wax residue might be… You might consider warming it gently with a hairdryer, and using a dry paper towel to wipe off any wax that you can. You may find, then that a gentle sanding will expose the plaster to a point where you can paint it properly. Avoid using water on exposed plaster because it will be absorbed and it can make the plaster much weaker… Potentially even crumbling. It’s important to get the residue off because the paint will peel much more quickly if there is any wax underneath it. Hope this helps.
