The first generation Vanquish was the car that, at my young age of 12 at the time, made me love cars thanks to Die Another Day. The noise and the looks made it an epic spectical. I love these 'meet the ancestors' reviews by Autocar. They show so well how the old heroes compare to the modern versions. Thank you Autocar!
Sorry for responding to an old comment, but I am an Aston Martin fan as well, and I would gladly take an older Vanquish over a new one, I agree with you that it's better in terms of looks.
I just love that new Vanquish, it looks absolutely gorgeous, it sounds splendid, and every time I look at it, I fall in love, and even though that F12 Berlinetta is very tempting put against the aston, I just know I will just give in to the Aston every time, it's just that gorgeous.
Using the old Vanquish is a bad comparison, they should be using the later Vanquish S model. The older one was not so good, it had a lot of problems, the S however had all of its predecessor's problems amended and as a result was the much better car, and it had a lot more power (522bhp) and had a top speed of 204mph, which is in fact a lot quicker than the new Vanquish. The Vanquish S was supercar royalty, this new one is slower than a Bentley Continental, a bit disappointing if you ask me.
Aston KNOWS how to make a good car, problem is they have so limited funds to DEVELOP them. Unlike Ferrari (Fiat), Lamborghini (Audi), Porsche & Bentley (VW), Aston is INDEPENDENT. This makes Astons feels truly bespoke. but this means that they lack the $ to make something that can keep up with the likes of the F12 Berlinetta, Aventador LP700-4 & Continental Supersports. And I find that a bit sad. Given enough funding, I bet the Vanquish mk2 will give those supercars a run for their money.
Personally, I think the current Vanquish has more of an appeal than the F12 or Aventador, its got a coolness the Italians cant really match (I get that 'cool' is purely subjective). I agree with you though, but thanks to the new engine partnership with AMG, hopefully a lack of funding wont be a problem for Aston Martin in the future.
manuel collado Fun fact; the reason why they called it the One 77 is they will ONLY make 77 copies. Pagani may only make 2~3 cars by hand per year, but even so they have already moved 203 Zondas before they stopped production. Aston isn't as remotely as expensive per car as Pagani; their prices more align with Porsche & Ferrari than Koenigsegg.
I'm not so sure, i think this new one has really grown on me, and in the blue i saw in the flesh (Probably the same car james may had on TGear) it is something very very special to walk around and admire.
Original Vanquish 2002: 306kph Vanquish S 2006: 321kph Vanquish 2013: 295kph Old Vanquish is prettier, faster and more luxurious, new Vanquish looks like a simple version of DBS...fucking David Richards.
Exactly ! Vanquish S remains the best Aston Martin ever... As you said, top speed was more than 321 km/h, only 1086 ever built, amazing sound and so much charisma. The last proper Aston... The new 2013 Vanquish is a just a tuned DB9, same thing since 2004...
***** And the worst thing is they lost the good and old tradicionalism, see the "Second Generation" of DB9? what also have to be called as DB10, because DB is the series and DB9 isn't a separated car, worst than this, the engine is a Mercedes Benz AMG 4.0 V8... lost the speed, lost the tradition, lost the most sexiest engine sound ever made... It's a Playboy Car, aren't a car of a real Gentleman, just like the best poster child for this brand: James Bond.
Never realized just how different these cars looked until I saw them together. On the outside, they both look great, but on the inside, there's no contest. The new one wins.
Keep your Vanquish S as long as possible The Best Aston Ever Made Only 1086 Vanquish S built from 2005 to 2007 Last handmade Aston at Newport-Pagnell factory 200 MPH top speed... the BEST SOUND too
Hard to screw so much power out of the engine when it is essentially still based on the same 6.0 V12 block that debuted on the DB7 Vantage in 1999. That same block I believe is loosely based on the Mondeo Duratec/Zetec 3.0 engine (times 2) with a crankshaft in the middle. So,,,,the engine is really really old...but still so soulful.
looking forward to seeing the next evolution in drivetrain, handling, & technology for aston martin. Lesser luxury car seem to compete with its performance. I not a brit but i;ve always like astons and hope they can stay viable and relevent in the automotive industry.
The reviewer did say the Vanquish Mk1 is one of the 'old school' exotics. The M135 follows an entirely new principle in car design (flyweight handling) vs. the Vanquish Mk1's "POWER!!!" and little much else. There exist a large performance gap between cars of different eras. I will however, doubt that the M135i will keep up with the 'new design principle' of Astons, take the Vantage S for example. A M3 maybe, but that's another story.
Autocar, if you read this please respond. Couple of months ago Steve drove the 2013 DB9. Now in that video he already told us that the new DB9 gets very close to the new Vanquish, but now Sutcliffe states he underestimated the new Vanquish up until now. I'm wondering whether you guys could describe the difference between both cars. As a great Aston fan, but one that has too be very lucky to drive one, i'd really appreciate it.
@Ricardo I have to admit the M135i has a nice sound. Why I know this? Well, I am sitting outside in front of a cafe and here's a guy in a white M135i driving in a circle around the cafe since 30 minutes begging for attention.
The lines on the new Vanquish are simply gorgeous. However I really don't like the back end though, I just doesn't work with the rest of the car. Hopefully they'll get it right with the inevitable 2014/15 Vanquish GTS ;)
"There are others that accused it (Vanquish) looking, well, a little bit vulgar at the styling front." Whoever said this, they didn't open their eyes quite much. It is beautiful. I would say that this car is like a scaled-down version of the One-77, carrying the name "Vanquish," where you can buy it without fearing that you might not be able get one of this because of the limited production numbers. I agree that I can't agree with that vulgar styling front comment.
According to their own website, the Vanquish is the "Ultimate GT". However, this does not mean that it should not perform. (Yes I used a double negative) So, I would say that is a sporty GT. It's an Aston Martin, it should perform.
I love the new model, its stunning. But I would take a MINT black, factory conversion manual Vanquish S over a new one. The original Vanquish S is so handsome, timeless. The new one is a little bit too footballer's wages for me. Dont get me wrong. Its still awesome.
For the time the old one is better without a doubt! Back in the day the old Vanquish was one of my favorite cars, the new one for 2016 is not. But then again the new Vanquish in today's world is much cheaper then the new flagship Ferrari's and Lambo's, the old not so quite.
Basic block isn't exactly what you redesign every year. If it's OHC there's not much to work on anyway. The basic design of AM V8 from 1968 was in use until year 2000, BMW used it's M10 engine for 26 years 1962- 1988.
i'd have chosen 2013 bentley gt v8 as a proper long distance tourer over this new aston without a shadow of a doubt! what aston does is it lures with its stylish carbon exterior but it is simply overpriced for what it is. bentley's better looking interior, four wheel drive, better mileage, lower emissions, adaptive air suspension, impressive torque of nearly 500lb/ft from just 1700rpm, cheaper price tag etc is what i look for in a proper gt car. oh, and the naim audio for bentley is a bonus :)
It would've been much more interesting if this new Vanquish had been compared to a late Vanquish S - preferably an 'Ultimate Edition'. The 'S' was launched in 2004 and had 515 bhp if I remember correctly - so in 8-9 years the Aston engineers only managed to gain 50 bhp? Ferrari 575M had 540 bhp in 2005 - the F12 now has 730 bhp - so in the same time Ferrari has managed to gain 190 bhp. The old Vanquish seemed a much better contender to Ferrari etc. than the new one does.
I am quite young, yes. By this rate, when I'm your age I'll be able to buy a V12 car that can handle properly and accelerate like a V12 should. Cheers.
thanks 4 something i already know mate !!thats not the point ,the thing is AM is so expensive you could never afford to buy one even if you have 2 lives
If you're talking about the dark blue one with beige interior, it is not a Vanquish S. It is a Vanquish 460 bhp with S clutch and wheels, look at the 3rd stop light, it should be in the trunk, while it is behind the rear windscreen. The minimum price for an early 2005 Vanquish S is £80,000. It can go up to £185,000 for a Ultimate Edition 2007-model (one for sale by Aston Martin Leeds). That was the price of new in 2007. Aston Martin Works (Newport Pagnell) is selling a 2007-year model Vanquish S at £125,000.
I love the looks & sound of the the Vanquish, but as everyone has said on car reviews the gear box is crap, the DB9 gear box was so much better,i haven't seen a Vanquish for years but i do see a DB9 nearly ever day at work
Achilles204 Yes that's for sure, Vanquish S Ultimate Edition (50 last ever built) are for sale at £180,000 which was the price of the new car back in 2007. Late 2007 models are at around £125,000. Anyway, £100,000 seems to be the minimum to get a great Vanquish S (2005-2007) with perfect service history, perfect condition and relatively low mileage. They keep on rising !
I Couldnt Agree More The 2007 Vanquish S Is A Beast It Does A Proper 200 MPH Whereas The New 1 Runs Out At Barely 190 Also The 2007 S Model Had A Much Nicer Dash With Sat-Nav I Bet Autocar Would Be Embarased To Compare That To The New One Because It Would Beat It Lots OF Areas And Im Sorry But Apart From The One-77 The Original Vanquish Is The Best Sounding Aston Ever Made (PERIOD)
I can and I just did. It bothers Vanquish owners that a small family hatchback beats the shit out of their handcrafted V12 exotic, believe me. I've had two going ape when I beat them in the bends (one in Parque Florestal de Monsanto, the other one in Sintra). Driver input might have helped, but it surely doesn't explain everthing.
From what I understand from Steve is that there's basically NO CHANGE, or little of it, in just decade, in terms of performance. No wonder Aston needs to depend on Daimler-Benz for hand-me-down engines.
While the new one is a pimped DBS, the real Vanquish is a stunning masterpiece and a piece of art. Timeless and classy. I owned a Vanquish (Non S) and now a 06 Vanquish S - I will not sell it (probably I will if I find a better color combination) and I would NEVER trade it for a new one. For me, the new one is way too overstyled (technically it´s a decade behind a modern Ferrari) and too aggressive for an Aston Martin.
An 8 Series is not an Aston Martin - the brand is a lot less exclusive, it's not in the same segment, it cost a lot less and it never took itself half as serious as the Vanquish did (which, if you've not figured out yet, is my main point). Besides, the 8 Series was introduced 24 years ago - that's late 1980s engineering; the Vanquish was born in the 21st century.
I love the old vanquish always looks like the king of the lineup , But as for the new one i really don't find or feel anything special about it especially for the price. You still can see it as a DB9 with modern standards its like a 3rd facelift...
As we all know, the original Vanquish is the most beautiful.
That's for sure ! Original Vanquish FOREVER
As a big Aston fan, I think the new vanquish looks better
Sorry for responding to an old comment, but I am an Aston Martin fan as well, and I would gladly take an older Vanquish over a new one, I agree with you that it's better in terms of looks.
You definitely have taste ! :)
My god, this is an old comment xD
Time must be going fast ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Once on a german autobahn, an old Vanquish has passed me on full chat. The sound of the V12 has brought tears in my eyes...
The old vanquish was much better in terms of looks. It still looks unique. The vanquish is just a tinkered DB9.
I just love that new Vanquish, it looks absolutely gorgeous, it sounds splendid, and every time I look at it, I fall in love, and even though that F12 Berlinetta is very tempting put against the aston, I just know I will just give in to the Aston every time, it's just that gorgeous.
New Vanquish is one of the most beautiful and elegant cars out there, enough said

Pagani hasn't got any funds too. But they are making perfect cars. I think funds are not excuse to make a good car.
selim türkel
Pagani is is another league of EXPENSIVE to be able to offset the cost for their cars. (A Huayra is 2~3x a V12 Vanquish)
Trades46 Funding? Explain that One 77 they made. Super expensive Pagani price range car.
manuel collado
Fun fact; the reason why they called it the One 77 is they will ONLY make 77 copies.

Aston isn't as remotely as expensive per car as Pagani; their prices more align with Porsche & Ferrari than Koenigsegg.
It doesn't matter how much better the modern Vanquish is compared to the original, the first One IS And Will always be a very much more special car
The Old Vanquish
I'm not so sure, i think this new one has really grown on me, and in the blue i saw in the flesh (Probably the same car james may had on TGear) it is something very very special to walk around and admire.
the older vanquish is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen.
I love to watch Steve Sutcliffe's reviews. Thanks another nice review from Autocar.
Most BADASS OPENING SHOT EVER! You've got me as a subscriber, that's for sure.
I feel we have some modern cars that can’t compare to the beauty of the exterior of the old vanquish.
Is it just me or does the spoiler on the Vanquish look like the spoiler off the Lotus Evora
Original Vanquish 2002: 306kph
Vanquish S 2006: 321kph
Vanquish 2013: 295kph
Old Vanquish is prettier, faster and more luxurious, new Vanquish looks like a simple version of DBS...fucking David Richards.
totally agree
Exactly !
Vanquish S remains the best Aston Martin ever...

It's a Playboy Car, aren't a car of a real Gentleman, just like the best poster child for this brand: James Bond.
Yes. I believe the 05/06 Vanquish S ( with that attractive nav screen)is the best Aston Martin to date.
God that Colour is so Beautiful with Carbon Fiber parts, reminds me if the DBS
But... nothing beats a childhood hero!
they've come along way especially with the new 2017 S
i like the old one soo much, i prefer it to the new one!
I want the original Vanquish so badly. It's tons cooler than the new one.
Never realized just how different these cars looked until I saw them together. On the outside, they both look great, but on the inside, there's no contest. The new one wins.
Bought a DB9 recently.Just found a 2002 Vanquish for sale online.Tempted.🤔🤔
Great review from Steve. I find the new Vanquish absolutely stunning!
Keep your Vanquish S as long as possible
The Best Aston Ever Made
Only 1086 Vanquish S built from 2005 to 2007
Last handmade Aston at Newport-Pagnell factory
200 MPH top speed... the BEST SOUND too
they did change the back into that floating kind of wing, which i think is kinda cool
Near-perfect drifts. Looks like great fun
They've somehow managed to make it prettier AND more aggressive looking. Neat trick Aston!
So,,,,the engine is really really old...but still so soulful.
new one looks more db9ish
when the first vanquish came out, was a lot more spectacular than the new one, with reason
"Yeah, theres just a touch of understeer" *drifts around the corner*
If the new one had the headlights and the squared off rear quarter panel of the old one it would be perfect
looking forward to seeing the next evolution in drivetrain, handling, & technology for aston martin. Lesser luxury car seem to compete with its performance. I not a brit but i;ve always like astons and hope they can stay viable and relevent in the automotive industry.
The V12 Vanquish is still my favorite Aston.
Yes correct for the Vanquish S (2005-2007) with 200 MPH top speed !
I always thought the new Vanquish is beautiful until now I saw it next to the old one.
One of my dream cars
The dashboard changed on the Vanquish S in 2006, DB9-style inspired
i LOVE the new facelift !! but the rear why not give it a update too ? shame it could be perfect. almost
I was about to say the older one looks better, but the new one got it beat in all areas.
...one thing is for damn sure! Aston makes OK looking cars!
The new Vanquish looks like an after market bodywork on a DB9.
The reviewer did say the Vanquish Mk1 is one of the 'old school' exotics. The M135 follows an entirely new principle in car design (flyweight handling) vs. the Vanquish Mk1's "POWER!!!" and little much else. There exist a large performance gap between cars of different eras.

i love all astons but i was wondering why in every video with the vanquish the headliner rail stitching has holes
Couldn't say better than that, that's true !!!
@Ricardo I have to admit the M135i has a nice sound. Why I know this? Well, I am sitting outside in front of a cafe and here's a guy in a white M135i driving in a circle around the cafe since 30 minutes begging for attention.
You should have drove the 2006 version with the updated interior. The 2006 vanquish S.
The lines on the new Vanquish are simply gorgeous. However I really don't like the back end though, I just doesn't work with the rest of the car. Hopefully they'll get it right with the inevitable 2014/15 Vanquish GTS ;)

Oh god... It beautiful.
According to their own website, the Vanquish is the "Ultimate GT". However, this does not mean that it should not perform. (Yes I used a double negative) So, I would say that is a sporty GT. It's an Aston Martin, it should perform.
Awesome beginning
I love the new model, its stunning. But I would take a MINT black, factory conversion manual Vanquish S over a new one. The original Vanquish S is so handsome, timeless. The new one is a little bit too footballer's wages for me. Dont get me wrong. Its still awesome.
This new one might be terrible value but as a car its amazing
the old vanquish is better
agreed
For the time the old one is better without a doubt! Back in the day the old Vanquish was one of my favorite cars, the new one for 2016 is not. But then again the new Vanquish in today's world is much cheaper then the new flagship Ferrari's and Lambo's, the old not so quite.
+Uzeyr Hassan The old vanquish is not better for the time at the moment it will always be the best for the entirety of time.
VANQUISH MK1's value (2001-2007) is increasing
Basic block isn't exactly what you redesign every year. If it's OHC there's not much to work on anyway. The basic design of AM V8 from 1968 was in use until year 2000, BMW used it's M10 engine for 26 years 1962- 1988.
Actually if you read their website, they list the Vanquish as a GT.
Thbe only cars i've ever dream to have:
The AM V12 Vanquish
The new 100th aniverssary Vanquish
And of course the now 50 year old Aston Martin DB5 1963
I'd take the old one, hands down!
beaten flat by f12
but looks beautiful also the interior is nicely styled, do remember its a gt
i'd have chosen 2013 bentley gt v8 as a proper long distance tourer over this new aston without a shadow of a doubt! what aston does is it lures with its stylish carbon exterior but it is simply overpriced for what it is.
bentley's better looking interior, four wheel drive, better mileage, lower emissions, adaptive air suspension, impressive torque of nearly 500lb/ft from just 1700rpm, cheaper price tag etc is what i look for in a proper gt car. oh, and the naim audio for bentley is a bonus :)
I'd agree that the old one's better looking.
I'm with you on that.
God that thing sounds amazing!
Love that green!
I like the front of the new car but the back end is better on the older car.

The old Vanquish seemed a much better contender to Ferrari etc. than the new one does.
what's up with the almost square steering wheel?
New Vanquish looks amazing. but that old Vanquish? There is something about it when you see it on the road that just makes my jaw drop!
New vanquish all day long
and then the new Aston will become a hero again in the next 007 movie
Just a classy car
I am quite young, yes. By this rate, when I'm your age I'll be able to buy a V12 car that can handle properly and accelerate like a V12 should. Cheers.
the rear licence plate on the old one... Can you have them cut to shape in the UK?
No, the plate had to fit the shape of the Aston. (If you could, everyone would want to change their plate in the UK!)
the old car is for sure better looking from ALL angles bar the front, what does that mean?
The owner of an Aston who just got beaten in the twisties cares, believe me.
don't get it why they still don't but the paddles on the steer??
thanks 4 something i already know mate !!thats not the point ,the thing is AM is so expensive you could never afford to buy one even if you have 2 lives
Just looked on auto trader old Vanquish S £45,000. I'll have the DBS tho
The old Vanquish S is fast approaching over £100,000+ and will continue to rise. I bet many have not even seen one on the road in person.
***** Meanwhile the latest vanquish seems to be plummeting! You seem quite an enthusiast on the Vanq S which is nice to see.
I Couldnt Agree More The 2007 Vanquish S Is A Beast It Does A Proper 200 MPH Whereas The New 1 Runs Out At Barely 190 Also The 2007 S Model Had A Much Nicer Dash With Sat-Nav I Bet Autocar Would Be Embarased To Compare That To The New One Because It Would Beat It Lots OF Areas And Im Sorry But Apart From The One-77 The Original Vanquish Is The Best Sounding Aston Ever Made (PERIOD)

vanquish S was awesome
Why is the steering wheel square? :))
where the hell do these guys go to test these cars?
styles change over time... I guess people will complement this 2014 vanquish 10 years or so later.
You just read out my thoughts precisely. The front is gorgeous, but the back doesn't belong on this car. I like the dbs back more.
From what I understand from Steve is that there's basically NO CHANGE, or little of it, in just decade, in terms of performance. No wonder Aston needs to depend on Daimler-Benz for hand-me-down engines.
old vanquish is easily 1000 times better looking
My, how little has changed.

Go see evotv review of f12 vs aventador vs vanquish, I think it's a more critical review
Am I the only one on this planet who has difficulty telling one model from the other from Aston Martin?
Wtf they just kept playing the same clip of it going around those two corners the whole
