Today on the channel I am driving the second generation of Aston Martin's flagship Vanquish - launched in 2013. This is the car that replaced the DBS, which in turn had replaced the original V12 Vanquish.
Even amongst afficionados, the Vanquish is often overlooked, particularly these earlier six speed examples - but why? More importantly - are they any good?

Has any shop ever swapped the gearbox with the manual in the dbs?
I always wish for aston martin to make a two door gt car with enough room for 5 adults.
I’ve driven that very car! In 2014 for my wedding, then 4 days around the Wye Valley.
Nearly cried when it had to go back and my wife seemed cross that I didn’t get that emotional on our wedding day.
Haha Lolz.
Good god the sound of that V12 is glorious
😂 Like two V6's singing in beautiful harmony.
Why on earth AM got rid of the V12 on the new DB is beyond me. The V12 was defined those cars…..
@@ZATennisFan Emissions probably
The startup sound at the beginning sounds like a symphony
@@lptomtom I can’t see how that would not put a smile on your face every time you started it….
The crazy thing is this car is now over a decade old but in terms of styling, especially from the front 3/4 view it could genuinely have been released this year and I wouldn't question it (the rear's lack of a lightbar dates it a little, but I personally like the style). It's an absolutely brilliant piece of car design and for my money a far better looking thing than this year's DB12!
Id have one over a DB12 in a heartbeat
10yrs old!! Wow. Didn’t actually figure that till I read this! It’s stunning and has aged so well.
Class is permanent.
Thank god, this car does not have lightbar. All cars don't have to have unibrows ...
I've recently purchased a 2015 Vanquish... I highly recommend it. It's a FANTASTIC car, especially with the 8-speed gearbox and extra power. I love it so much I really can't imagine ever selling it.
If I still had a tidy sum I had few years ago mate, I’d do the same. Count yourself lucky to be in a position to indulge, I was knocked sideways recently, life happens.
I will probably trade-in my Rapide S for a Vanquish when my daughter turns 13 (about 3 years from now). I love the Rapide for practicality but it weighs 550 pounds more than the Vanquish and the exhaust opens up about 500 rpm later (at ~3,000 rpm). It’s a perfect intro to exotic car ownership, though because I never lose traction and can enjoy that glorious V12 sound year-round
@@sidelniewhat happens when your daughter turns 13. My son is going to be 16 September. Hopefully when this happens I get my life beck.
@@chrishart8548 when she turns 13 she ride as a front passenger in my dream Vanquish 😂
@@sidelnie That makes sense now. Does she like cars ?
There is this one episode of top gear that I watched as a kid that has stuck with me for years.
It was a US road trip where Clarkson had a yellow LFA, Hammond had a black viper and May had a light blue vanquish.
All 3 of those cars remain some of my favourites to this day. Its probably the single piece of media thats most informed my taste in cars.
I haven't watched that in ages. Might have to tonight
So interesting that the Vanquish would have been a competitor to the LFA at the time, the only thing that sets them apart now is rarity and that unique screaming V10
Love these, feels like a lot of car doesnt it.
@@bwdrives and about a million quid
To answer your 60k question, as someone who grew up around the time of the launch of casino royale, it simply would have to be a DBS. Specifically the tungsten silver example for sale at Aston Martin London for 59,900
So true!
I was at a party being given and attended by very affluent people. I was outside getting some air, when a guest pulled up with a DBS from the Casino Royale era. All of the valet parking staff lost their minds, including the women who were working there. The women generally don't get impressed by cars, but they were by this. I'm also blown away by the exterior, but having sat in one, the interior is deeply disappointing.
Love my 2013 Vanquish. It's "only" got six speed but I have never thought to myself "if only I had another two gears" and even the mighty Aston guru Mike from Bamford Rose once commented that six is enough.
When you have torque you don’t need 8 speeds. This generation of 8 and even 10 speeds transmissions help fuel economy and do not really help cars with large torque numbers.
I think over the years, that we became so over exposed to yet another V12 VH Chassis Aston coming out we didn’t stop to appreciate each of them in turn. Now they’re gone, they all seem really special. Time to buy before everyone else realises this too lol…
Interesting review from a former DB9 owner - DBS - Vantage and VanquishS are the best-looking AM - Love the Engine!
Yes, he is absolutely right, I have a 2013 Vanquish and Im extremely pleased with the car, can recommend to anybody who is looking for a sports car in this price range to go and get one ;)
What do you think of the maintenance or reliability of the db9? I've been looking to getting one (and maybe even dailying it)
Starting off the videos with revs and engine sound and nothing else is genius :)
As much as I love the Vanquish, the DBS just looks so much nicer to me. As for what £60k Aston I'd have, it is a hard decision between that and a V8 Vantage S. If I could buy a cheaper car and have the rest of the money to "mod" it, I would have a DB7 3.2. I have had some very interesting thoughts about what I would do to one of those
wow the amount of information i gather of a car in your reviews are so far ahead of many famous channels. good job sir
This chap is A VERY good presenter indeed - very very engaging.
183… to 201mph… not sure I will ever get to test that improvement.. but… one loves this car, just exquisite.
Just buy yourself a Vanquish or DBS, James! 2 years ago your videos helped me decide on whether to buy a Granturismo, Vanquish or DBS, as those were my top 3 choices. I decided to go with the Maserati, as after 20 yrs of Porsche's, I desired to finally own an elegant Pininfarina Italian super model, so I went with the lowest mileage 2017 Sport in Grigio Granito/Cuoio that I could find. I can say that I honestly have zero regrets. BUT, I still search the classifieds regularly to see if a DBS or vanquish pops up in my perfect spec. You only live once, buddy, and you've already had your fun in the F12. I personally believe that the Astons or the Maserati suits guys like you, and I better than anything from the prancing horse. Good luck from across the pond and best wishes on your Quest, my friend!!
Possibly my favourite review so far. Absolutely excellent. So pleased your channel has went from strength to strength. You talk absolute sense in a straight forward way. That shouldn’t be rare but we all know it is. And if for nothing else the 80’s inspired outro is magical. Thank you
Vantage V12 manual would be my go to option, right after the early V8 Vantage.
Agreed. I think the V12V is starting to go up in value too.
I would absolutely, absolutely, absolutely have a 2013 Vanquish. I can’t quite put my finger on it but it’s one of my all time dream cars. Especially if I could find one in Flugplatz Blue.
Ooo James you must get one. I still miss my old next door neighbours on start up every morning. And at Castle Combe they always get the most attention.
Jay your videos are great. I’m thinking about an Aston recently so these are really helpful with all the other tidbits of info.
never been so early on a video!! been absolutely loving the videos lately
Vanquish with the 8 speed box would be my choice. I'm lucky enough to own a DB11 and love it, but I think the Vanquish has the best sound track of any supercar.
This era of Vanquish is my favourite of all the possible Astons I could reasonably see myself getting my hands on. Would love an S but not for the current premium and I would be constantly worrying about damaging that front end!
I would nearly just buy this car simply for the noise. It's soooooooooo good 😮
Thanks for the video, still tempted by an Aston...
Lovely stuff as always Mr Emm!
💪👌
Great review. This is my favourite modern Aston. In my opinion, the Aston is miles better looking than a Ferrari F12- it’s barely a conversation.
I wish we could go back to the days when Aston Martin made beautiful cars
I look forward to the day when they rediscover an original design
Great info and great video, now I’m looking, just looking👍
Excellent review again.. you've definitely got the hang of this TH-cam thing. 👏👏👏
Always so incredibly informative James!! Love the Vanquish so much, that noise!!!! Makes me cry how cheap cars are in the UK, you guys have it SO good over there!!!
Excellent film, one of your best. I've got a Gen1 VQ (my third!) and I'm besotted. Your vid is the first time I'm tempted to look at gen 2...
These Vanquishes are incredible packages. Drop-dead gorgeous, incredible sounding, by most accounts quite reliable and comfortable (read:daily-able). The 8-speed ZF is icing on the cake. The fact they are as affordable as they are is amazing to me.
I was lucky enough to drive a Vanquish Carbon Black a few years ago, and compared to my V8 Vantage it was a massive step up in performance and luxury. It became my “lottery win car” but my numbers have yet to appear.
I sold the V8V and zip around in an A110, which is the most fun car on the planet but I am very tempted by that Vanquish… here’s hoping the numbers come up.
Nice video as always.
Great video. I’m on my second viewing already 😄🙌🏼
Awesome video video Jay! You guys have it so good in the UK the cars are so so cheap!!
Have the 2013 6 speed and it's amazing! As a cruiser it's ideal but just comes into its own on sweeping roads when you press those sports buttons. It's also achingly beautiful and I propose to it everytime I see it.
Hi James, Astons do currently seem to offer some very tempting and good value pickings compared to their contemporaries. Encouraged by our recent(ish) BAE Vantare project and a bunch of your Aston Martin videos (thankyou), I just picked up a lovely Rapide gen1 in Casino Royale silver. I absolutely bloomin love it. Agree nothing wrong with the 6 speed TII transaxles. Do it 😎. Dom
This body style I still think is the prettiest Aston ever. I love how sleek it is.
I could listen to that all day Jay
I am sooooo enjoying your journey down the VH Aston rabbit hole! 😅 For me for £60k I’d take a Rapide S touch tronic 3! And daily it… But as part of a fleet the vanquish 2 is hard to deny at this money
I've had a ZF8 version since 2018. Great car. I can't believe how cheap the early 6 speed cars are now, and they still drive great. You don't win the "200mph club" chat down the pub, but who cares when it's the same price as a 520d with a few options. I wonder if they'll eventually climb back up and be seen as peak era - that noise, natural aspiration, carbon, that styling... Ticks a fair few boxes.
Great video again, if had the money for any car I wanted(A.S)i would definitely pay for your advice on my purchase, hope you get the car of your dreams. I await your next great video
I'd go with the DBS, love the shape of that and the DB9
40 seconds in and I’m sold on the sound only. Drooling 🤤 over here.
I was about to say some negative , this video started, the engine roared, and i’m gobsmacked ! Epic .
One recently dropped into the low 50k price range but with a 2019 vantage around similar prices it also makes that a bargain not to be overlooked
There's a 33k mile 2013 Vanquish up for £53,500 at the minute in a great colour combo and spec. The second gen Vantage from 2018 have always depreciated like a stone due to the styling and Mercedes heavy interior. Tht's why it's been replaced already with a newer model.
Yes thats the Vanquish i saw it was priced over 60 only a couple of weeks ago, i dont have the money for it but have been watching them but with the next gen Vantage going for 60 could this be the better option as i worry about the running costs of a 2013 Vanquish over the Vantage
@@BangAverageRider Potentially, but that would likely be offset by the lower depreciation on the Vanquish going forward especially if bought well like that black example?
As a daily the Vantage makes a lot more sense, but as a car for more limited special use the Vanquish has it beaten hands down for me.
I have to agree, looks, sound, a special occasion car for sure.
I cant imagine the vantage going much lower as the other older cars are not much cheaper!
Great video as always Jay!! Staring across from North America I have to admit I do get jealous of the over supply of Astons in the UK, the prices here across the VH range is still relatively high because of lack of supply. Any of them that have dropped in price are usually cars that have not been cared for all that well and especially so for convertibles showing notable sun damage to the interior leather and trim from a life in the sun. Oh if only the UK was LHD... ;-)
Yes we may have salt on the roads but the sun is nowhere near as brutal!
Your Aston videos have been really useful! I was looking at a £70k db11 v8 but I found the ride very firm compared to my 991. Either way the Astons are very affordable
Jay based on your previous review of the Vanquish I bought a later 8speed Carbon edition last year and it is awesome. I love the styling cues from the one-77 and the sound of the V12 is awesome. Final point as you say is the value. My car was over £200k new and I picked it up at 6 years old with only 17,000 miles for just under half that. 😊
Cool
Aston Martin V12 music is magic. Just want one because of this🧡🇬🇧🎶🎶🎶
The vanquish everytime. And what you said about the running costs of the F12. Get a vanquish S sell the F12 and bank the money left over. Win win. Have to disagree the vanquish looks sooooooo much better than the F12
Quite possibly the most beautiful car ever made ❤
I adore all aston but if i had to have only one it would def be a vanquish . Loved this video
I had a look on Autotrader, right now in Bagshot there's a Vantage S 4.7 in Volcano Red with Sahara tan leather, 2017 21,000 miles, £58,450, it looks gorgeous and different a beautiful car a great colour combo, whoever chose that brand new fair play to you great choice, there is some cheaper Vantage S 4.7's looking nice in black, but when I saw the red one, then saw inside, yeah very nice
The Vantage S is a very different car though. On AT at the minute there's a 2013 33k mile Vanquish in black with cream interior for £53,500. That would 100% be my pick.
@SW-by9ob They're certainly all very nice, I was looking for something in a different colour combo that the normal, there's a nice DB9 Volante in British Racing Green, a few Rapides in different colours, but the rest are all silver grey and black, out those 3, black looks good on an Aston, Tungsten Silver is nice, there's an old Vanquish with a magnetic gearbox upgrade looks good, but that red one I saw just looked so good amongst all the others and in great nick
I had a Virage which I loved, especially the V12. The love affair turned into a disaster as going through a deep puddle, not a flood, produced hydro lock and a write off .
I picked up a Quantum Silver Vanquish Volante late last year. MY14 with 6 speed ZF. It's a great car. It might be a bit blasphemous, but I did a primary cat removal / equal length headers with upgraded secondary cats. While the original exhaust is glorious, I have grown to love the new sound. It quite literally screams, now.
Do you have a video? Would love to hear
@@Alex-iu8xx Exotic Autosport did the install. Let me know what you think. I was hesitant at first, but man I love it. th-cam.com/users/shortsHAEDON68iIc
This is a gorgeous looking car with great old school analogue controls. Really wanted one but I was too frightened about the running cost and reliability, so bought a Porsche 911 Turbo S which is an absolutely brilliant car….BUT this Aston still looks soooo good and sound amazing 🤩 😍
I love all Astons, but the one I find most beautiful is the DB7 - so good, I bought one. Nice to hear that they are increasing in value.
Very enjoyable !
Love it. I would actually prefer a manual swap vanquish 1. Just looks awesome.
The old Vanquish is a majestic beast, but for a daily feels a bit long in the tooth. I'm also concerned it would break in a way I can't fix
@@JayEmmOnCars fair. It’s not a daily but I do think under valued. As it ages it’s not the kind of car you’d grab by the scruff of the neck with any confidence!
yo that was probably the smoothest transition I've ever seen at 0:43
Vanquish is my favourite Aston ❤
The vanquish is my all-time favourite dream car
Buy One! But the 8 sp, its much better!
I paid little visit to the AutoTrader and around 60k...Always a big fan of the saloon body type, so I found a 2015 Rapide S at Aston Martin London: beautiful 20 inch wheels, unique shade of sliver (tungsten silver as they said) with ZF 8sp box at and in a solid spec. I do wish it could have a colored interior rather than black and 62 grand seem bit off from average price as AutoTrader suggested... but hey i ain't gonna complain no more with that more even powerful v12 soundtrack under the bonnet.
A manual 4.7 Vantage would be my first search
Why not a manual v12 vantage 😂😂😂 you’ve got 60 grand mate
I’d go Vanquish 8-speed. The 8-speed really makes a big difference. Experienced it in the Rapide. Day and night.
Halle Berry was the best thing about that film. The Aston, close second.
Can't argue with that. Die another day though was in my opinion, the worst bond movie ever.
Hi James.
Hope your doing well.
I really loved the video.
I would still buy a DB9. I've always liked the DB9.
I loved all the colors of those cars.
Agreed ! I bought a 2008. DB9 And it is all the Aston you really need, all for £35 -£40k for a good one. Do it ! You only live once 😊
Such a beautiful and great sounding car. Would you go for a DBS mk 2 instead if they were around the same price?
I own this car, same year too. It's an absolute automotive "masterpiece", I highly recommend it.
For the £60k AutoTrader Game; I love the Mk 1 Vanquish, I think the Virage is a very clean look and the Mk 2 Vanquish is a stunner but I'm going for the one that is rarer and turns more heads: the DB7. A coupe GT (For the manual gearbox) in a dark colour with cream interior. One currently on AutoTrader for £50k.
My perfect colour is the light blue (apparently Mendip blue, didn't know it, but looked it up) with the cream interior.
Far more than just an XK8 in a fancy suit and stands out from any VH-Platform Aston while still being as classy as it gets. Rare as heck so will be always feel as special as a car can get.
I always found the DBS to be a little too similar to the DB9, though comparing it now to the Vanquish that replaced it, I can better appreciate its more classic beauty, and it certainly looks more athletic than earlier DB9s. But I'd say the Vanquish better matches your shirts....😁 , it's the newer car so likely to be the more resolved drive, with an improved interior, so would get my vote.
Pretty is not a word I would use to describe the F12. The Aston Vanquish blows the F12 out of the water looks wise. Its lines are fluid while those of the F12, while striking, are angular and therefore disjointed.
I would definitely get this car. That's my dream car.
But for my next car, it will be a DB9, in something like 3 year.
But after the DB9, the Vanquish is my ultimate goal, the 8 speed version more precisely. I found this car perfect in term of design (which is extremely rare for me, I always tend to found some little things for this or that angle, but not on this one), sound and practicality. Plus the 8 speed is quite fuel efficient, I could even say very efficient for a v12.
This is the very car that made me like Aston Martins, and to me this is the most beautiful Aston ever made (I don't know a lot of the classics) and perhaps, one of the most beautiful cars ever. ❤ I like this more than the One-77. (That is too aggressive for my liking)
And also, that "V Car" naming startegy is an amazing fact! :O I had no idea! It could have worked if instead of introducing a whole new car with no point they would have just renamed the DB9 but well, here we are with the David Brown 12 😂
I have a DB9 and I’m thinking of up grading to the DBS or a Vanquish, From my research i think the Vanquish is the better car and if you take it to Bamford Rose they do some awesome upgrades which make it just as good as the 8 speed. Get the Vanquish
V12 Vantage as a weekend toy for me and a simple Audi for midweek motions
2:53 - Eh? 'Yomp' is military infantry-speak for a gruelling hike; I think you may have meant 'yump', which is Finnish-rally-driver English for 'jump' [i.e. a bump in the road big enough to get you airborne].
A yump is usually marked in the pace-notes as 'flat over brow' or Flatoverbrau if you prefer German lager.🍺 Cheers!
Great cars , owned a few but you do need the 8 speed
I'd probably go for a v8 vantage N420 edition, perfect amount of power and upgrades to make it more sporty
Now that engine sounds deliciously angry and the car is definitely a looker!
I'm sold. Love it.
60k. Budget. I want the best I can get
AnyAston is a dream come true, a DB9, who in their right mind could grumble at that. A vantage ahhhhhhh heaven but if the budget is $60,000 how could anyone not go for the holly grail
The vanquish !
Only trouble is I’d want to sleep in the garage 😂
My wife would divorce me and I’d have to agree to her having the house so I didn’t have to sell my new bedfellow.
Think I’ll get a 4.3 vantage and share the house with my lovely wife. 😊
I’ve driven one of these. Absolutely beautiful car
Vanquish; Percy Brosnan Bond, Haile Berry the bond girl, Madonna on the mic/ soundtrack 💯 peak UK history
Looks nice, but,do the bhp numbers matter,,(adequate) unless on a race track, how much is usable
I've yet to own a more stunning car than my 05 Vanquish. It looks better, more attitude than the later iterations imo. I loved it despite the ford bin parts, no sear height adjustment and the peculiar clutch system on a semi auto box. I used to reverse it intoy garage and rev it hard, just to get more glorious pipe music. A real head turner.
I set the Autotrader search for Astom Martin...price up to £60k and there were 350 Astons fro sale.....they used to make that many a year at one stage didn't they????
Like you I have noticed that the price of a Vanquish 2 has dropped...and I do like them a lot....even though I have just got my DB9 I am keeping an eye on the prices! I do like the red colour too!
This was always my favourite from that era. Just subtly nicer in small ways
How many owners do you reckon have opened the boot or fuel flap by accident when trying to get the windows down 😂
I played the game, but I went to car & classic instead of auto trader. There's a 1981 Lagonda up for £59,995. It appears really well sorted with a great history. It's probably a good thing that I haven't got the money.
Love my Volante 8spd! Bit too heavy to be really exciting and never feels quite as fast as the numbers suggest but a wonderful car nonetheless. Looks, feels and sounds very special. But yes, you are right to be concerned about that front end… no matter how careful you are 😬💷
Not convinced the 8spd is essential though; there is loads of torque and 8th is only really for the motorway anyway. I had a 6spd DB9 previously and I find myself thinking 7 speed would have been ideal ha!
For the 60k question it would have to be either the DBS for its stunning looks, or a V12 vantage with a manual. I always remember Jeremy Clarkson reviewing the V12 vantage for top gear and he barely said a word in it, he simply let the looks of the car and the engine note do the talking with Brian Eno playing over the top.
Its a beautiful car - to this day 2024 looks brand new in style
You can always add after market gear paddles?
Hi @Jay,
I've been watching your channel for a while now, in answer to your question, as someone who has access to an aston (4.3 Vantage, Manual) I've been looking to buy my own. The £62995 Vanquish on autotrader is my dream to be honest. I'm a couple years shy of budget to buy it however. I have however decided, I would have to buy 2014 onwards based on your previous videos where you've talked about the DB9 & vanquish. I also like the blue DB9 for 40k on autotrader, however I know if I buy the DB9 I'd still want to get the vanquish eventually being honest.
Love your channel, I own a Range rover - Know they are not your favourite but we can still be friends right?
I just can't handle the fact they took the Vanquish that launched them in to the modern era, and imo a stunning vehicle and is aging beautifully and changed it to look so much more like everything else they were building at the time.
Wow, what a range of Astons for £60K. I can't believe you can get an original Vanquish for this money or a special edition like the Vantage N430. But if I had to choose I think I'd go for the lovely dark red Rapide. I have a big family and I have always been a sucker for 4 seat GTs. Wonder what I can get for my rusty T5 Shuttle and that A3 saloon....?
