I have been a Pete guy since I was a kid going on my dad's 1971 cabover 352 (318 Detroit) in the summer loved every minute. I've owned myself a 359. 377. 379, 389 are great too. This new 589 has the classic looks it's a good-looking truck, it is 2023. 50 years have gone by you could still have spring suspension; air powered wipers, air assist steering now that's classic if you like. I will take a new quiet, riding on air comfort.
you can get a stick in any truck even the new cascadias have manuals though they're harder to come by but I've seen personally 10 and 18 speed manual cascadias 2020 body style .The only new tractor I've haven't seen manual yet is the Volvos VLN but I'm sure they have them to just rare to see one.
That's a nice rig! Never owned a Pete because of size inside and between the seats. This truck is the exception. Old school flair with new school additions which is a great combination.
Gorgeous truck. I think Peterbilt did a great job on the 589. But I can't wait to see what Phoenix Designs, 12 Gauge and the rest of the chrome shops do now.
I'm noticing what is So Unique, now that makes it a 359, 379 & 389 is the...Split-Windshield. That's gone forever. So glad I have my 2015 PETE 389 and try to keep her going as long as I can with extra good maintenance & service at the shop when needed...Rest in Peace Split-Windshield, they done us dirty for-sure...Come-On !
I think with some touches here and there it will be a decent unit. Like you noted about the heat shields not dropping down to cover the elbow neck-down, the flex pipe in the stack, etc. I can’t really see how a drop visor is going to work with that mirror placement, but that got worked around on the 389 as well. Time will tell.
Good educational video Steve. I own and drive a 2023 567 with 80" sleeper and premium package and interior,so the truck featured in this video is virtually identical to mine from windshield back. Switching from narrow cab KW to this wide cabin and big stand up sleeper was a great change. It's spacious, practical, quiet... really driver friendly environment. It gives you a great ride on front air ride, which I'm sure will be at least the same with new long hood 589,so you kind of get best of both worlds. Navigation screen that you mentioned,I actually love and as you know you can get up to 12 digital gauges instead of only 6 analog and again... driver friendly, even for electronic equipment illiterate like me. I know what you are saying about it being expensive to replace in case of failure but should we be thinking like that when we spec these things? I don't think so. I'm not disappointed in mine,at least not yet. I know you will get a lot of negative comments about this truck, but people who never drove one of those 567 ,579 or new 589 don't have any idea what they are talking about. Either way starting January 1 of next year that's the new and only choice. It is what it is. Or is it? They can always get a new fancy International or Western Star. Personally I would take new 589 before those any day.
I appreciate you taking the time to give the real world perspective. Passion usually drives the negative comments and change isn't usually welcomed. Adapt or get out of the way is how its always been.
I currently drive a 2023 1:11 Pete 567 62 in mid roof. I drove a older w900 before. I like the truck. Company that I work for has been buying 567 set forward axle trucks
The new 589 will NEVER outlook a classic 389 or 379. Oh, too that big ugly windshield will be a big expensive cost when it cracks. Trucks are going just like the uglier styled cars anymore, pretty paint jobs, overpriced junk. Just my 2 cents...
Buddy I've been doing this for over 40 yrs. I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. YOU ARE DRIVING CALIFORNIA AND EPA DRIVEN JUNK THAT NEVER WOULD'VE BEEN BUILT BY AN ACTUAL ENGINEER IF USING REAL WORLD COMMON SENSE. THESE NEW TRUCKS ARE POLITICALLY DRIVEN LIE OF CLIMATE CHANGE GARBAGE. NUFF SAID. I WILL NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER OWN OR DRIVE ANYTHING NEWER THAN A 2007. THAT INCLUDES GLIDER KITS WITH THEIR FUCKED OVER BLOCKS THAT BLOW UP BEFORE 400K. YALL CAN HAVE THAT. ILL STICK WITH THE TRIED TRUE AND RELIABLE PRE EMMISSION TRUCKS THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Awesome looking truck! The self adjusting clutch is due to the hydraulic clutch, because there is no longer linkage and no adjustment for freeplay or clutch brake.
What is that look down mirror for?? I see a lot of trucks with that and I don't get why anyone would use that mirror. My best guess is to see if the step is still on the truck while your driving down the road lol.
Seem like they took all of the trucks they offer and put it into one. Would make factory life easier and production faster. What does your shop think about the flex pipe, I would think a flex pipe works better horizontal then vertical.
Im driving 2023 W990 and this truck is exactly the same just smaller tighter interior on 589 and different exterior. I personally love w990 because it rides and hauls like a dream❤❤❤ the old 389 is dead!
So the long hood is basically the short hood now ? It looks fairly short compared to the 389 long hood. Is the steering wheel standard or will it be an option of none smart wheel available?
From the factory, that is the only steering wheel. I'm pretty sure as these trucks start rolling out that the aftermarket will come up with steering wheel options.
Peterbilt needs to add practicality in the sleepers, have an integrated table under the mattress(removable cushion bed) flush fridge with solid handle lock, and secured microwave, other side have a few big open storage shelves and few drawers. That’s it
What on earth could be under there that you haven't seen in my other 200+ videos? Its already a 20+ minute video so I didnt feel the need to talk about X15's like I have 100's of times before.
@SteveCarbone Well Steve wasn't trying to be rude but I know there is changes coming on the cummins so I was just asking I have seen some of them . I thought it would have some test parts !!!
Steve I. Trying to find out the best way to custom order a new Peterbilt. I know there are a few companies that do it. If Peterbilt does it how long does it usually take? I’m looking at Kenworth as well.
The clutch not coming out from the floor anymore not a bad thing lol don’t really use the clutch anyway just to start and stop. The truck still looks nice over all and nice to see it’s an 18 speed and not an auto.
Did 46 yrs on the road and my last 3 trucks were W-900 L's with big Cats. Looking at this shit now makes me feel pretty comfortable being retired and out of the business.
I know it’s better than a 389 in every way but one thing I can’t overlook is that weird angle from the flat hood to the swept back round windshield. It looks better with the 567 because the hood slopes with the windshield
I think it’d also look better with a taller hood to be in proportion with that huge windshield, like the W990 (which is built on the same platform). Sadly this just can’t have the low hotrod look that any of the previous longhoods had due to the windshield.
Any word on dry weight when compared to a similar spec 389? I'm wondering how much the wider cab and bigger glass added to the truck in terms of weight.
is their a 589 flat top? Peterbilt's still the GOAT, this is a nice truck, it's kind of sad to see the 389 go but this is decent, hopefully still available in flat top?
Steve, can you clarify if that’s a car hauler axle with air ride? I thought the max weight was 13,200…most car haulers I’ve seen have 14,700 front axles.
Can you get it without collision avoidance and adaptive cruise?? That's the most irritating thing I've ever experienced in my 15 years of trucking. I actually returned a truck because of it. I need cruise, I just don't need it pouring me through the dash when the car in front of me takes an off ramp lol
I don’t think you can get it without it, someone told me after 2020 maybe that all CMVs have to have a collision avoidance system. Not sure if that’s 100% true or not
I wonder if a 5th battery could be put in that step box. Can never have too many batteries if you don’t roll with an APU. If the Texas bumper is on there you’d have to go with the square lights imo.
You know. I’ll always love the 389. The 589 like any new design will take time to adjust to but I know it will still be the choice for the owner operator. IMHO the 589 will be a much more comfortable truck for the driver. I just miss the 24.5 low pro wheels and tires.

Great video Steve!! My drivers really like that space to put wallets and notebooks. Can you explain why you prefer bolts on the frame instead of huck bolts? Thanks
Agreed. Kenworth dropped the ball with the W990, it looks terrible in my opinion. It's nothing like the W900. This 589 while not perfect, looks a whole lot better and actually still mostly resembles the 389 atleast. I prefer the W900 over the 389, but definitely would much rather this 589 over the W990.
I have a 567 and that windshield is a terrible rock catcher. And replace the whole piece of glass instead of either side. Luckily I was able to order one of the last 389’s. This is a huge change and I’m not a fan, lots more room but def paccar threw a curve ball with this model.
@@rtz549Yes, I know why it's done, I want to know how it's done. Electric heater in tank, circulate coolant through tank, heater in fuel filter assembly that returns to tank? HOW?
The single, and most important styling cue Pete forgot, was the forward slant on the sleeper. That was a huge miss, and it was 100% "the look" of a Pete for decades...
It just dawned on me. They basically just took a "cowboy edition" 579, slapped on a slightly bigger 389 hood with a Texas bumper, threw on some air cleaners, tweaked the mirrors, and then called it a day. I don't hate it, I actually love the resto-mod feel to it, but when you break it down like that it feels a little...uninspired.
I always love the 389 and I didn’t buy it back the because it looked so outdated. Now I’m seen this truck and it kept the nice classic look which I believe is so awesome but with the technology from a 579 which is super super awesome. I can but it now but how the economy is I rather wait. But the truck is one of the best ones on the market
After seeing this, we’re gonna have to switch to the dark side and get a W9
Rumor is going around the w9 won't be around much longer either. Blame the epa for that
Long as it's PACCAR PRIDE LARGECARS K-DUBBS & PETES it's ok!!!!!!

Surprisingly, the only thing I disapprove of is the dash. Im gonna miss climbing into the truck and seeing nothing but gauges.
I agree I would take mechanical gauges over digital gauges any day
I totally agree with you on that, digital gauges make me nervous.
The air cleaners kinda look goofy. Surprisingly I like the digital dash
It grows on you because it’s so much easier to keep clean and scratch-free.
good to see they are still putting sticks in these ❤️ not all hope is lost

They have the same BBC (bumper to back of cab), but the cab on the 589 is longer, so the hoods are shorter.
They could've made the BBC 135 on the extended hood and 125 on the short hood.
Just curious, how does the long hood version of the 589 compare in length to the car hauler hood on the 389? Seems very similar
Excellent eye, same hood for both applications

Absolutely

The single, and most important styling cue Pete forgot, was the forward slant on the sleeper. That was a huge miss, and it was 100% "the look" of a Pete for decades...
I actually like it. By looking at the comments you can’t please everybody but I’ll give it thumbs up 👍🏾
I feel like that's flex exhaust might be a problem in the future when the truck gets some miles on it
Wonder how it will work for the car hauler platform.
How many different colors can they put in that interior?
Looks way better than the Walmart truck I drive!
So it’s a 567 with a 389 hood?
Pretty much yes
I always love the 389 and I didn’t buy it back the because it looked so outdated. Now I’m seen this truck and it kept the nice classic look which I believe is so awesome but with the technology from a 579 which is super super awesome.
I can but it now but how the economy is I rather wait. But the truck is one of the best ones on the market
I understand
