I have been a Pete guy since I was a kid going on my dad's 1971 cabover 352 (318 Detroit) in the summer loved every minute. I've owned myself a 359. 377. 379, 389 are great too. This new 589 has the classic looks it's a good-looking truck, it is 2023. 50 years have gone by you could still have spring suspension; air powered wipers, air assist steering now that's classic if you like. I will take a new quiet, riding on air comfort.
you can get a stick in any truck even the new cascadias have manuals though they're harder to come by but I've seen personally 10 and 18 speed manual cascadias 2020 body style .The only new tractor I've haven't seen manual yet is the Volvos VLN but I'm sure they have them to just rare to see one.
Good educational video Steve. I own and drive a 2023 567 with 80" sleeper and premium package and interior,so the truck featured in this video is virtually identical to mine from windshield back. Switching from narrow cab KW to this wide cabin and big stand up sleeper was a great change. It's spacious, practical, quiet... really driver friendly environment. It gives you a great ride on front air ride, which I'm sure will be at least the same with new long hood 589,so you kind of get best of both worlds. Navigation screen that you mentioned,I actually love and as you know you can get up to 12 digital gauges instead of only 6 analog and again... driver friendly, even for electronic equipment illiterate like me. I know what you are saying about it being expensive to replace in case of failure but should we be thinking like that when we spec these things? I don't think so. I'm not disappointed in mine,at least not yet. I know you will get a lot of negative comments about this truck, but people who never drove one of those 567 ,579 or new 589 don't have any idea what they are talking about. I currently drive a 2023 1:11 Pete 567 62 in mid roof. I drove a older w900 before. I like the truck. Company that I work for has been buying 567 set forward axle trucks
The new 589 will NEVER outlook a classic 389 or 379. Oh, too that big ugly windshield will be a big expensive cost when it cracks. Trucks are going just like the uglier styled cars anymore, pretty paint jobs, overpriced junk. Just my 2 cents...
Buddy I've been doing this for over 40 yrs. I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. YOU ARE DRIVING CALIFORNIA AND EPA DRIVEN JUNK THAT NEVER WOULD'VE BEEN BUILT BY AN ACTUAL ENGINEER IF USING REAL WORLD COMMON SENSE. THESE NEW TRUCKS ARE POLITICALLY DRIVEN LIE OF CLIMATE CHANGE GARBAGE. NUFF SAID. I WILL NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER OWN OR DRIVE ANYTHING NEWER THAN A 2007. That's a nice rig! Never owned a Pete because of size inside and between the seats. This truck is the exception. Old school flair with new school additions which is a great combination.
Gorgeous truck. I think Peterbilt did a great job on the 589. But I can't wait to see what Phoenix Designs, 12 Gauge and the rest of the chrome shops do now.
I'm noticing what is So Unique, now that makes it a 359, 379 & 389 is the...Split-Windshield. That's gone forever. So glad I have my 2015 PETE 389 and try to keep her going as long as I can with extra good maintenance & service at the shop when needed...Rest in Peace Split-Windshield, they done us dirty for-sure...Come-On !
I think with some touches here and there it will be a decent unit. Like you noted about the heat shields not dropping down to cover the elbow neck-down, the flex pipe in the stack, etc. I can’t really see how a drop visor is going to work with that mirror placement, but that got worked around on the 389 as well. Time will tell.
Awesome looking truck! The self adjusting clutch is due to the hydraulic clutch, because there is no longer linkage and no adjustment for freeplay or clutch brake.
Peterbilt needs to add practicality in the sleepers, have an integrated table under the mattress(removable cushion bed) flush fridge with solid handle lock, and secured microwave, other side have a few big open storage shelves and few drawers. That’s it
Steve, I am not a driver, but always wanted to and have enjoyed your Peterbilt content for years and that of others. Change is inevitable and I think they did a very respectible job in the redesign. Both cab and sleeper combine to make a much more comfortable living space, seems to me. Keep up the pressure, Steve! They really need to contract you for design consultant and get more of the detail stuff right earlier in the process. Sure would help reduce the chatter and earn them more early positive market response... But what do I know...😁
Seem like they took all of the trucks they offer and put it into one. Would make factory life easier and production faster. What does your shop think about the flex pipe, I would think a flex pipe works better horizontal then vertical.
Agreed. Kenworth dropped the ball with the W990, it looks terrible in my opinion. It's nothing like the W900. This 589 while not perfect, looks a whole lot better and actually still mostly resembles the 389 atleast. I prefer the W900 over the 389, but definitely would much rather this 589 over the W990.
I just wish they had updated that interior as that interior goes back over a decade. All they’ve updated is the steering wheel and the screen in replace of analog gauges. It would have been cool to design a modern interior inspired by the classic 389 interior that way it can at least share a lineage and similar layout. So they could still use these 579 cabs but just improve the dash layout and stuff; it’s just so basic.
@@SteveCarboneYeah the 2013 had the same exact dashboard and layout. They’ve definitely made it more upscale over the years with wood grain pieces, updated steering wheel and trim, the screen that replaced the gauges, etc. but the entire dashboard is the same exact piece from a decade ago. It would just be cool to see a redesign.
I know it’s better than a 389 in every way but one thing I can’t overlook is that weird angle from the flat hood to the swept back round windshield. It looks better with the 567 because the hood slopes with the windshield
I think it’d also look better with a taller hood to be in proportion with that huge windshield, like the W990 (which is built on the same platform). Sadly this just can’t have the low hotrod look that any of the previous longhoods had due to the windshield.
Honestly i love the 589. I drive a '15 w9 glider and stepped away from my '20 567. I miss the cab, pedals, sleeper, and the ride. I love my long hood non emission w9 like no other but, the cab and feel of the new wide cabs are really nice and i would love to get in one of the new 589s. 3 1/4 rears 18 speed and a 605 cummins would be a great setup. I honestly cant wait to see what the after market comes up with for lights and visors for the trucks and to start seeing them out on the road. Its an end of an era to be loosing the 389 but i really think they nailed it on the 589, people that are driving and buying these trucks are just stuck in their ways, but they will turn around and see that the change is nice. Just takes time.
The single, and most important styling cue Pete forgot, was the forward slant on the sleeper. That was a huge miss, and it was 100% "the look" of a Pete for decades...
So many were not happy about this new model. I like it. Once the aftermarket guys get on board this will be awesome. I really want to drive one . I like the way you spec your trucks Steve. Keep up the good work. 💪🏁🇺🇸
@SteveCarbone Clean come back, but no automatic transmission for me, or a 589. Peterbilt has lost thier mind putting that cab behind a long nose hood. Save money Peterbilt, and I'll save mine as well. No disrespect to you Steve, but everyone that is talking this truck up, and selling it to the O/O's knows in the back their mind that this is not an O/O truck, it's just a way to save money. Hate the huge windshield, electronic dash, the ugly a$$ dash, the doors, and that wide a$$ cab, and especially those small air cleaners, that come off a Lone Star International. 379 for life ! One thing that stays the same, everything changes, but in this case not for best in my opinion !
Im a pete 359 379 389 fan. Ive driven a 389 flatop with the bigboy sleeper 8 inch stacks and a detriot 60 series 😍....... All that being said..... This truck is not good looking. I hope after market parts make it look better. 😢
It just dawned on me. They basically just took a "cowboy edition" 579, slapped on a slightly bigger 389 hood with a Texas bumper, threw on some air cleaners, tweaked the mirrors, and then called it a day. I don't hate it, I actually love the resto-mod feel to it, but when you break it down like that it feels a little...uninspired.
I wonder if a 5th battery could be put in that step box. Can never have too many batteries if you don’t roll with an APU. If the Texas bumper is on there you’d have to go with the square lights imo.
Did 46 yrs on the road and my last 3 trucks were W-900 L's with big Cats. Looking at this shit now makes me feel pretty comfortable being retired and out of the business.
Im driving 2023 W990 and this truck is exactly the same just smaller tighter interior on 589 and different exterior. I personally love w990 because it rides and hauls like a dream❤❤❤ the old 389 is dead!
The clutch not coming out from the floor anymore not a bad thing lol don’t really use the clutch anyway just to start and stop. The truck still looks nice over all and nice to see it’s an 18 speed and not an auto.
Can you get it without collision avoidance and adaptive cruise?? That's the most irritating thing I've ever experienced in my 15 years of trucking. I actually returned a truck because of it. I need cruise, I just don't need it pouring me through the dash when the car in front of me takes an off ramp lol
I don’t think you can get it without it, someone told me after 2020 maybe that all CMVs have to have a collision avoidance system. Not sure if that’s 100% true or not
You know. I’ll always love the 389. The 589 like any new design will take time to adjust to but I know it will still be the choice for the owner operator. IMHO the 589 will be a much more comfortable truck for the driver. I just miss the 24.5 low pro wheels and tires.
I like it but most of the older school guys are not going to like the interior but come on things and time change In the future everyone will love them
is their a 589 flat top? Peterbilt's still the GOAT, this is a nice truck, it's kind of sad to see the 389 go but this is decent, hopefully still available in flat top?
I'd still like to see a electric blue with reflective red decals and this cab and all looks to be great however does the def have a delete kit thats the only reason y so many like old school trucks also u r right about the heat shield it should have hidden the exhaust elbow with a lil curve on the bk en to match the cab line too however I'm thinking that when adding stainless with lights that will take up to the cab line if the exhaust heat shield is extended 2 inches or so would've been nice also I personally think s&h tube would like a go at this truck or one like it they r a custom stainless shop and do outstanding wrk and they have utube channel too also the front hub/rotor centers should be painted red to match frame too also does it have automatic balancers too 4 the tires and look at the stance of this truck it sits well but how does it preform is it still the same meat and taters as the old schools or is it turned dwn like most factory trucks if it's turn dwn that 650 is 550 is what most think any who plz plz paint one or oreder a electric blue maybe with a red frame but electric blue truck would be nice however that's my opinion tho also sending up prayers 4 healing and unspoken and 4 everyone and bless great healthy peaceful safe journeys travels and happy hauling and happy day everyday in name of the Creator God and Yeshua/ Jesus and the Holy Ghost Amen much honor and respect keep walking tall always and petal to the metal hammer dwn and keep'em on the pavement/ roads and keep'em rollin also catch u on the flippy flops and cool truck 🚌🌅🌌⛺🌄🏞🏖 👍👍💪🙂👍👍
Peterbilt did a much better job with this 589 than Kenworth did with their W990. This truck actually still looks a lot like the 389, whereas the W990 looks completely different to the W900.
What on earth could be under there that you haven't seen in my other 200+ videos? Its already a 20+ minute video so I didnt feel the need to talk about X15's like I have 100's of times before.
@SteveCarbone Well Steve wasn't trying to be rude but I know there is changes coming on the cummins so I was just asking I have seen some of them . I thought it would have some test parts !!!
So the long hood is basically the short hood now ? It looks fairly short compared to the 389 long hood. Is the steering wheel standard or will it be an option of none smart wheel available?
From the factory, that is the only steering wheel. I'm pretty sure as these trucks start rolling out that the aftermarket will come up with steering wheel options.
Great video Steve!! I’ve bought two 567 and ordered them with full gauge packages within the digital gauge cluster which can be modified to each driver’s preferences and ordered them with the little shelf where the navigation screen would normally be. My drivers really like that space to put wallets and notebooks. Can you explain why you prefer bolts on the frame instead of huck bolts? Thanks
I always love the 389 and I didn’t buy it back the because it looked so outdated. Now I’m seen this truck and it kept the nice classic look which I believe is so awesome but with the technology from a 579 which is super super awesome. I can but it now but how the economy is I rather wait. But the truck is one of the best ones on the market
Hey Steve been a while glad to see you posting videos. I love the 389 and the 579 driven both. I always said if they made a combo of both it would be cool. It looks great. I’m sure we will be able to get double bunk option for my kiddos to go with me. Can’t wait to see the chicken light packages will be available in a couple years.
That’s literally what they did It’s like the 389 and 579 had sex and named they offspring the 589 I hate it 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ we don’t like it peterbilt please go back to the drawing board take the 389 make the cab smaller and more narrow and make the windshield smaller
What is that look down mirror for?? I see a lot of trucks with that and I don't get why anyone would use that mirror. My best guess is to see if the step is still on the truck while your driving down the road lol.
I have a 567 and that windshield is a terrible rock catcher. And replace the whole piece of glass instead of either side. Luckily I was able to order one of the last 389’s. This is a huge change and I’m not a fan, lots more room but def paccar threw a curve ball with this model.

5 star review sir *****
Still wish there was a option on the digital dash sometimes you just want normal gauges lol.
Surprisingly, the only thing I disapprove of is the dash. Im gonna miss climbing into the truck and seeing nothing but gauges.
I agree I would take mechanical gauges over digital gauges any day
I totally agree with you on that, digital gauges make me nervous.
The air cleaners kinda look goofy. Surprisingly I like the digital dash
It grows on you because it’s so much easier to keep clean and scratch-free.
good to see they are still putting sticks in these ❤️ not all hope is lost

After seeing this, we’re gonna have to switch to the dark side and get a W9
Rumor is going around the w9 won't be around much longer either. Blame the epa for that

W990
@@kylewest7449 w900L the 990 is a rebranded 680

Just wow, and wonderful. Thank you so much for this video. This video allowed me to show my wife, why I easly love this truck brand.

Much better job then what Kenworth did with the 990!!

Awesome looking truck! The self adjusting clutch is due to the hydraulic clutch, because there is no longer linkage and no adjustment for freeplay or clutch brake.

I forgot to add, I love it! The Roominess and comfort of the 567 with the looks of the 389. I can't wait to order one with a heavy wrecker body.
Only looks it shares with a 389 is the hood. The rest is trash poopy
The hood is completely different too. Shorter and its got weird angles to it. Looks like shit

I was the 590th thumbs up… doh! Looks great! Not all change is bad. Honestly, most drivers today couldn’t fit in a classic Peterbilt cab from the 80s.
Got that international lonestar look going
The last truck I drove before retirement was a 379X. It was a head turner back in the day. Seems like yesterday.
379 Cat 3406E, 18 double over
Will always have my heart.
Looks way better than the Walmart truck I drive!
I think it will look great with a steeper drop visor and matching chops too.
Same
Drop visor that covers the window
Just can’t get over that giant Volvo windshield
They did what they had to do , this is a nice rig.
KW is still keeping the classic w900 peterbilt drop the ball, the 389 was the best looking truck on the road.
Not sure if that’s 100% true or not
That Peterbilt 2025 589 is really cool
Thank you bling!
Excellent and informative video as always.
Just wondering - why a 302" wheelbase instead of a 300" or maybe a 305"?
After we sold 100s and 100s of 300's we started doing 302s just to mix it up
Makes sense. Thanks.@@SteveCarbone
You know. I’ll always love the 389. The 589 like any new design will take time to adjust to but I know it will still be the choice for the owner operator. IMHO the 589 will be a much more comfortable truck for the driver. I just miss the 24.5 low pro wheels and tires.
I agree 100%
Red. So RED. Awesome looking rig!
Thanks!
I like it but most of the older school guys are not going to like the interior but come on things and time change In the future everyone will love them
Younger guys don’t like it either. The original cab was classy, this is a abomination
is their a 589 flat top? Peterbilt's still the GOAT, this is a nice truck, it's kind of sad to see the 389 go but this is decent, hopefully still available in flat top?
Yes, I have a flat top the way. Will do a video when it arrives
Nice job Steve truck looks awesome I just can’t be spending over 200,000 on a truck
I'd still like to see a electric blue with reflective red decals and this cab and all looks to be great however does the def have a delete kit thats the only reason y so many like old school trucks also u r right about the heat shield it should have hidden the exhaust elbow with a lil curve on the bk en to match the cab line too however I'm thinking that when adding stainless with lights that will take up to the cab line if the exhaust heat shield is extended 2 inches or so would've been nice also I personally think s&h tube would like a go at this truck or one like it they r a custom stainless shop and do outstanding wrk and they have utube channel too also the front hub/rotor centers should be painted red to match frame too also does it have automatic balancers too 4 the tires and look at the stance of this truck it sits well but how does it preform is it still the same meat and taters as the old schools or is it turned dwn like most factory trucks if it's turn dwn that 650 is 550 is what most think any who plz plz paint one or oreder a electric blue maybe with a red frame but electric blue truck would be nice however that's my opinion tho also sending up prayers 4 healing and unspoken and 4 everyone and bless great healthy peaceful safe journeys travels and happy hauling and happy day everyday in name of the Creator God and Yeshua/ Jesus and the Holy Ghost Amen much honor and respect keep walking tall always and petal to the metal hammer dwn and keep'em on the pavement/ roads and keep'em rollin also catch u on the flippy flops and cool truck

👍👍💪🙂👍👍
Peterbilt did a much better job with this 589 than Kenworth did with their W990. This truck actually still looks a lot like the 389, whereas the W990 looks completely different to the W900.
Does the hood open or whats under it you can't show????????
What on earth could be under there that you haven't seen in my other 200+ videos? Its already a 20+ minute video so I didnt feel the need to talk about X15's like I have 100's of times before.
@SteveCarbone Well Steve wasn't trying to be rude but I know there is changes coming on the cummins so I was just asking I have seen some of them . I thought it would have some test parts !!!
WOW Great machine and nice colors
I'm hanging on to my 06 379 double frame tri axle dump with a C13 and a 8LL. I poke along all day at about 116$ per hr. 30 gal. a day.
For jobs that only require 39 gallons a day you have a great machine for that. This is not one of those machines....
They have the same BBC (bumper to back of cab), but the cab on the 589 is longer, so the hoods are shorter.
They could've made the BBC 135 on the extended hood and 125 on the short hood.
I feel like that's flex exhaust might be a problem in the future when the truck gets some miles on it
they really dont look bad just different
Great video Steve!! I’ve bought two 567 and ordered them with full gauge packages within the digital gauge cluster which can be modified to each driver’s preferences and ordered them with the little shelf where the navigation screen would normally be. My drivers really like that space to put wallets and notebooks. Can you explain why you prefer bolts on the frame instead of huck bolts? Thanks
Welding inspector here. Cycle loading welds breaks them and it’s much easier to repair or replace bolted stuff.
I understand
Nice truck
thank you
Hey Steve been a while glad to see you posting videos. I love the 389 and the 579 driven both. I always said if they made a combo of both it would be cool. It looks great. I’m sure we will be able to get double bunk option for my kiddos to go with me. Can’t wait to see the chicken light packages will be available in a couple years.
Double bunk is an option now
That’s literally what they did It’s like the 389 and 579 had sex and named they offspring the 589 I hate it 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ we don’t like it peterbilt please go back to the drawing board take the 389 make the cab smaller and more narrow and make the windshield smaller
I have to agree 100% with that. 217k on mine 4 windshields.
Excelente video saludos desde Córdoba Argentina
thank you friend
This is a Great tractor Thank You
No dark side! Only the #light! #Jesus
This style of Peterbilt is gorgeous.
Love it!!
Awesome truck…
Thanks 👍
