Baby Blue That was my first step, too. It made it possible to gradually wean myself off other sugar laden foods. The baked goods and candy were much harder for me because I already preferred unsweetened tea. The sodas I've tried taste like chemicals and sickly sweet syrup now. I can't believe I used to drink that stuff all the time, even craving cokes.
I always used to put a lot of sugar in my coffee. Now I add unsweetened almond milk. It adds just a hint of flavor and cuts down on the acid for my stomach.
Your vídeos are great, very helpful. I was born in a country producing sugar, When babies cry moms put little bit of sugar water in the babie bottle to calm the baby, I am sure they did that with me. I love sweets, kakes, cookies good for me I don't drink sodas or any drink that are too sweet, but the minute start watching any tv program I start looking for food, especially sweet. I do eat a lot of veggies, but still have the sweet tooth. I live Your videos, they fully of great ideas to keep the good health. Thank you.😘
I’m getting ready to give up sugar and this is so concise and covers all the important points better than any clip I’ve seen yet. Most people forget to talk about the steps to take to avoid craving it in the first place and tell people just to have stronger will power, which doesn’t work on its own. So thank you! 😊💕
Haha!! Will power is TOUGH. It's about breaking it down and understanding our attachment to the addiction to begin with and be conscious about it. Happy to know this video has helped you. =)
What I do is I replace jam or jelly for my peanut butter sandwich with banana🙂. I know it sounds weird but it tastes so good. So I do toast ( it has to be toast ) and then I spread PB and I cut slices of banana. You can sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top. I literally started doing this THIS MORNING lol, acting like it’s been something I do all the time 😂💔
bananas are actually pretty sugary and fatty. not that they are not tasty but they might not be the best choice if you want to look out for sugar and your weight.
Hi Joanna. I was able to ditch sugar for almost 6 months following this video. But then i tasted something sweet and I’m dead. Now I had to come back to your video again
Thank you so much I have officially cut out sugar in my diet I'm so pleased now I have to do the same with fastfood/processed food and cola now 😊😊 I have cinnamon and ginger in my black coffee and tea ☕🍵❤️❤️
My diet is free from any added sugar since a year and a half, I did took the decision after seeing how much healthier my dad became because he started that before me, and since I'm a nutritionist I was always trying to control my sugar but it's so hard because most of days you ended up crossing your daily added sugar recommendations. So after seeing my dad's blood test, especially HbA1c i was shoked that it was 5, very normal level considering that 2 years ago and more his HbA1c used to be 8, so first thing I did is I asked myself why I am addicted to sugar, I ended up discovering that I eat it only because of boredom and enjoying it with others. But the difference in my process of cutting it out of my diet was I did eliminate everything at once not gradually like you mentioned. I saw no difference at first with or without as health benefit but after a month I start noticing changes in my overall health, physical activity and mood. I discovered that I was just eating it just for the sake of its existence but as taste it didn't at all bothered me replacing it with fruits, date, honey ( in moderation), ...
3 months of deeply cutting out sugar has changed the way food tastes. I appreciate the sweetness in fruits and vegetables more. I hope I can keep going. I keep telling myself if i really want something after my goal date, I can try it, but I'm hoping this is permanent, nd that I can reserve the special treats for rare occasions, like a great restaurant dessert that I can share with my husband... have to wait and see. These are great tips.
Joanna you are wonderful! For the soda fans - try mixing juice and sparkling water 50/50 and then reduce the amount of juice. Now I never drink pop and rarely drink juice, only carbonated or still water.
Dear Johanna, your advices and instructions are of such great help. I do know many of these facts, but it takes discipline to endure with good habits (actually with all new habits) and encuraging is helping a lot.
Luckly, my problem was never sugar. Yes I like cakes and stuff, but I don't eat pastries regularly, maybe once a month. I have always liked 85% dark chocolate, and drunk tea or coffe without sugar. Also, I hate fruit juice and soda drinks. However, I was still fat 😅
For some, it's the fat and salt that gets us. I always wanted the sweets, but friends got just as chubby as me with chips and bread (which I also liked, so double whammy there). :)
I hv replaced all sugary drinks and foods with fruits and veges smoothies.......lemon ,ginger and honey water and coconut water along with regular exercises......n seriously m loving it more than my older routine of addiction for cookies, pastries, cold drinks n all junk foods😁😁😌
Yeah surely....but now too am on by way to get sexy abs n a perfect toned body....n thnk u soo much am so inspired by ur healthy recipe as well as work out videos...luv u😌😁😘
I used to put 3 tsps of sugar in my tea. I travelled with my choir, I brought tea with me but no sugar. Once my roommate was away, I made tea and discovered that I have no sugar. I saw my roommate's sugar cubes on the table and took one. I thought she wouldn't be angry but she was indeed... Ever since I drink tea without sugar, only add one teaspoon to hibisc because it's too sour (but I don't drink it often though). Cereal is extremely sugary, prefer muesli. Chilli sauces are often 50% syrup. Bought dates instead of candy. Take always no more than two cookies for the tea. If I have sweets at home, I put them somewhere far out of my way, so that I even forgot their existence. I mix sour juices (orange, grapefruit, cranberry) with mineral water - almost like soda :)
Does anyone else find it SO hard when the cravings are there and then when they pass it's like totally different mindset, but when the cravings hit they are so strong, it's like nothing else matters. then as soon as I give in and eat, I feel like shit and hate myself! I also have BED but the first step I need to do is deal with the sugar addiction
Hmmm personally, I’ve been taught by my grandma that drinking sodas will harden my poop, and from that day on I reduced my soda intake lmao. Helpful video though, love you Joanna!
I have the biggest problem with eating chocolate when I am sad. It makes me feel better and in doesn't help that the past months I've been going through some problems. I am trying to be better starting today though and this video is giving me a boost of hope:)
YOU GOT THIS!! Chocolate may only make you better temporarily. Let's be more aware of our emotions and deal with that on a deeper level, that'll heal you. =)
One thing I did to reduce my daily sugar intake was to mix plain oats into the sweet cereals I used to eat for breakfast and gradually increased the amount of oats while reducing the amount of cereals. Now I enjoy eating oats with nuts and fruits much more than artificially sweetened cereals!
I was badly injured and lost part of my foot in an accident. I gained a lot of weight and hurt my back and recently sustained a tendon injury which is extremely painful. Do you know if there are any foods or supplements which help to minimize pain and speed healing?
It's amazing that people drink fizzy drinks daily. We were thought they were a treat. We'd have them birthdays, Easter and Christmas ! It thought us they aren't "food"!
The video I was looking forward to.....thanks a lot....love your work...please make videos on making homemade healthy evening wholesome snack with less sugar or without sugar....
Any tips to get the mind off of chronic pain? In the last step you suggest walking but during flares I'm lucky to even get up to get to the bathroom, let alone around the block...

@johannasoh What to do if I fall in the category of liking the taste? Moderately sweet though, like puddings, ice cream and tartes, as well as all this chocolate.. I almost never drink sodas, and don't take sugar in coffee or tea, but just.. How do I stop wanting that sweet, creamy taste? because that's what's always missing from fruit, though I like them moderately, they're never as soft and creamy.. And I don't like sour things, never have.
Hello Johanna ! I am chinese too, and I think I love white rice a little too much because I cant feel satisfied unless I eat rice every night. What to do?

An acquaintance of mine routinely gave her grandson sodas in bottles and sippees (not uncommon among some southerners). At 4 his baby teeth are horrible, totally rotten. She is unwilling to see the connection because the whole family lives on sodas. She's a very loving grandma, and she adores that boy, but that sugar is seriously addictive stuff. I've been there, so I can't afford to judge too harshly. We believe what we want sometimes, especially if it involves addiction to so-called comfort foods.
A couple years ago I stopped putting sugar and cream in my coffee. It was hard at first, but I will never go back, I only stick to my black coffee now and don't crave the sugary coffee flavour anymore :) ou and I also lost weight! :D
I gradually reduced my intake of chocolate and coffee. then, I felt there is no sense to put extra sugar so I replace it with stevia. Instead of having other sugary stuff like gummy or chocolate I ate more fruits which significantly reduced my craving. Also, I put a small piece 85% chocolate inside the date.
Cut it down little by little. For instance try to have americano with hazelnut syrup (and request for less). eventually just go with plain black. It'll take time but your palate CAN BE RETRAINED. =)
Hey. I discovered recently that I'm skinny fat. I always wondered why I only have bigger tummy and bulkiness near the arm pit. I do not go to the gym. Is there any exercises that you recommend that I can go at home. Would be great help. Also, my arms and legs are skinny. I do not wanna loose anymore weight but be healthy looking.

Funny thing is... i been trying to find a way to stop eatting sugar... but i know what the problem is with me. If sugar is in sight then I want to eat it because I get stressed easily. Expectually this week since i have a VERY important foreign language exam on monday. I work out about 5 days a week and drink nothing but water. My mom buys sugar stuff for my brothers but I get the craving for it knowing that its there.... UGH this addiction is so annoying!!!
Hence, sugar addition is typically linked to an emotional issue. I, myself can relate to what you're saying, stress eating and when it's in sight, it makes you want it more even if you know you don't need it.
I ditched sugar since last August. Lost 21kg in 4 months.

What if you're going through an eating disorder? Is it bad to stop sugar or okay to eat it
I know water is important but is it okay to use the flavor packets? I use those because I legit don’t like water. Is diet sodas okay as well?
What a well put together video Joanna! and veryyyy insightful! :) Thank you for sharing!
