  • @TomHernandez1
    @TomHernandez1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The sound is like an instrument that is not very easy to play but once you learn the correct way to play it, it sounds amazing. Basically what I mean is that there are some occasions where you are driving fairly slow in a higher gear and it kind of sounds like the cross between a lawn mower, a tractor and a Subaru (as a 718 owner I say that in the most respectful way) so you have to adjust your driving style to get the engine notes Porsche wants you to get out of this car. Bottom line is, the difference in performance over its predecessor (and the base model 911 if comparing to an "S" or "GTS") is so much of a leap that the only reason you might complain about the sound is that you are mad that you couldn't afford the 911 you truly wanted. Awesome review!

  • @dutoitm1
    @dutoitm1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As a current 981 Boxster GTS owner, I haven't even considered once "upgrading" to the 718. Admittedly I have not driven one and despite many reviews stating it was a leap forward dynamically, the 4-pot sound is just so dire I truly believe the 718 is a step back. Sure, the 718 has torque but revving my 981 to 7.5k redline is truly special. It's such a melodic soundtrack that I rarely even bother with the sports exhaust. I don't know about in the States but here in the UK the 718s are depreciating fast, especially the GTS. They're only about $8,000 more than a equivalent mileage 981 GTS in the UK now. I also know many people in the Porsche forums who went from 981 GTS to 718 GTS only to promptly get back in their 981. Still, great review and your editing and videography are improving constantly! Thanks Heidi.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for noticing the editing. It helps when you have more time to think it through (and have Franny’s help on some of my ideas). Drone shots up it as well (IMHO).
      I imagine your GTS is great, there is probably no reason to upgrade yet. If you had a 986 or 987, that would be a different story. I am curious how the gas mileage compares with a four cylinder turbo compared to the 981 with the same hp (981 S?). I would have to research those hp numbers. These newer cars have changes in consumption, but what I did not mention was the emissions too. My guess is that it has improved some also. Be happy you have your GTS, but if you were starting from scratch, I would not poo poo it just because of the engine. As time goes on, these engines and sounds will become more refined.

    Glad you like it! I have a 2018 718 Boxster, which replaced a 987 and was a considerable improvement; better handling, better ride, much more power everywhere, better steering, less overall noise which I thought excessive on the 987, better looking and so on. Mine’s a dark metallic blue with two tone heated seats and the sports chrono package and different wheels to yours.
    I’ve done 6,500 miles now including a trip around the Spanish mountains where the PDK and wonderfully light and precise steering really came into their own.
    I like the mute purr of the four and effortless way the car accumulates speed, apparently without effort. It’s ridiculously fast after the 987.
    I worried about the exhaust after all the silly comments in the press, but it’s just a better and more powerful car and more relaxing to drive because it’s so high geared. I’m very happy and will be even happier if you two buy one as well 😉👍😂😘

      True, after a few hundred miles in my 987S I'm toast. Comparatively, I feel like I could do a 750 mile day in a 718. While they are both sports cars, I think the 718 does look better and is tipping toward the comfort levels of a GT car. Unlike some other brands, I like the way Porsche puts thought into evolution of the product.

    Nothing compares to the wail of a flat six. That said, as the owner of a 6 cylinder Boxster S, I really have to hand it to these turbo fed 718 models at altitude. Driving a 718 "S" on Colorado's Eisenhower tunnel approach (`11,000 ft.), with zero power loss was SWEET!

    The Boxster is worth every nickel in my view. 19in wheels with 45 aspect ratio tires has better tolerance for real roads. Just back from weekend run the VA and WVA backroads. Rain fog, and sun ther Boxster was right for the trip. Luggage space is 9.4 cu ft. We had weekend luggage & had room to pick up a box of wine on the return. Thank for not bashing the exhaust. I will take the handling of the 718 coupled with the low rpm torque. The cabin is very quiet with top down and we can talk without shouting.

    I'm a 981 Cayman S owner. I've driven the 718 CS on track at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta and on the track at Barber Motorsports Park. The 718 does accelerate nicely and has more low end grunt. It looks the same from the side and the inside but I like the rear of the 718 better. As far as driving the two, I like the steering feel of the 718 better and I have the power steering plus option. Porsche really did something there. If you are really driving it hard as I did on the tracks, you don't notice the sound. But if you're on a mountain drive with the windows down, that sound definitely gets your attention. I have a set of Soul Performance headers with 200 cell cats and I have the Porsche Sports Exhaust. It is glorious when the valves are open. When I want to overtake someone on a country road, I switch from Sport mode to Sport+ mode and let it rip. The PDK shifts down and it literally screams. It gets me every time and that sound definitely gets the attention of the car being over taken. That sound...there is nothing like it. I am on the list to order a new 718 GT4. But that is the only version of the 718 I would want.

    I had a 987, currently have a 981 and tested the 718 and 718S.
    I enjoyed the 987, it was a great car but the 981 outperforms it and has better creature comforts.
    The 718 I tried had very noticeable turbo lag but a power curve that was awesome. As far as I'm concerned a $60+ car should not have turbo lag.
    The 718S eliminated the Turbo lag with the variable vane turbo but at a cost of an additional $20K. To the disappointment of my dealer and the relief of my wife, the dealer and I could not meet on a price. They were also shorting me on my 981 trade-in.
    So I kept the 981 it was paid off 8 months later and I'm happy with my choice. And, looking at the sales figures it would seem that I'm not alone. If I was looking today, I'd be looking for low miles 981.

    • @HeidiandFranny

      The 718 is much faster than a 987. We had one and Franny wants one again 987), but if we get another Boxster, I think the 718 is better. I felt no turbo lag. Interesting that you did. My turbo has more turbo lag than the Boxster. My opinion as you have yours.

    +1 .. An enjoyable, informative, Boxster 2.0t video review while driving throughout Colorado's Front Range. .. The lower elevation of nearby Denver is 5,280ft elevation is just the start. .. Porsche AG's recent turbocharging adoption of the Boxster/Cayman cars along with the 911 Carerra models pay big, big dividends. .. The normally aspirated 3.6l in our '98 993 coupe is sucking wind when scooting throughout Colorado's Front Range. .. A private pilot offered this Rule of Thumb, back of the napkin calculation. .. Specific output is negatively affected by -3% for every 1,000ft above sea level. .. Denver neg., 15%, Vail neg., 24% give or take. .. Enough said, get over the sound of the Boxster/Cayman turbos. .. What a lovely engine note, reminds me of the Volkswagen bus my parents had in the late 70s. I drive a 987 S and the whining (at low rpms) and screaming (at high rpms) engine can get a bit tiring, i would trade some of the drama for torque. But I am just too cheap to shell out the money for a 718, 987 caymans are less than half the money.

    The 718 is a great car, both as Boxster or Cayman, but not many people seem to know it. I've only seen one on the roads where I live. That said I went to Cologne the other day and there these cars are quite common. The Boxster and Cayman also were kind of the default favorite of the car journalists in this price segment, at least over here, but with the Alpine A110 available in some markets that has changed.
    There has been so much debate about this being a four cylinder instead of the old six. In most videos I've seen so far the four cylinder doesn't sound that great, not bad either. In your video here the sound is good. I'd keep it with the stock exhaust. Also I've heard a lot of different opinions on the 2.0 liter versus the 2.5 liter. Some in favor of the base engine, the other of the S.

    • @HeidiandFranny

    In the 2006 “Best Driver’s Car” test for Britain’sAutocar, the Cayman S won outright and bumped the 911 Turbo down to third place-writer Chris Harris even proclaimed that the base Cayman “has better steering than any 997, a more attractive cabin, and still retains the same generic feel to the controls.”
    And that how it is the Porsche Cayman is the better car it is a pure drivers car and not the 911’s anymore I prefer the 987 or the 981 and the Cayman has also the better design 😉

    Yes, 4 cylinders are enough if turbocharged. But... a NA 6cyl is more linear and some of us like that better. But... a sports car, if driven by a sports car driver, does not need lane change assist and other gizmos like that; they belong in moving lounges on semi-self-driving cars for people who hate driving.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I am indifferent about the lane change assist, but somewhat miss cameras when going back to my vintage cars and am backing up. Not an issue if I am in a good spot, but tights spots and no camera do make me a bit nervous some time. I do not need all the bells and whistles, but some things are nice. I also like speed limit display and heads up display.

    Good review Heidi. The way I see the 4 vs 6 argument on the Boxster is: the Boxster was a nod to the 550 Spyder... a flat four; which progressed to the 718... a flat four -- connecting the dots, a flat four is the logical choice. I love the way my 986 sounds when you let the Banshee out the bag above 5K rpm; otherwise, I can't see where I would miss the flat six sound. I just hope these new Boxster's remain as unloved as my 986; perhaps in the future I will be able to buy a718 for under $10K as well! And I agree, Porsche is subtly getting it's customers anesthetized to accept hybrid... then electric... then.... ZZZZZZZZ

    We happily bought a used 2006 987 Boxster S with a stick shift 2 years ago and I would never think of buying a 718. Is the 718 more modern and faster in all ways? Probably yes, but that’s not what excites me. Always loved the sound and the especially the character of the flat six boxer. What I especially dislike with the 718 and many other modern cars these days is the artificial exhaust farting which is built in with every up or downshift. I like flat 4 in a 550, a beetle, my old T2 and T3 VW buses and with a Subaru WRX. Not with a Porsche for that kind of money. Boxster annual sales in the US was more than double back in 2013 (4.632 sold) and more than 5 times higher (13.312 sold) compared to 2018 (2.097 sold). The market speaks for itself and I would not be surprised if the Boxster will be discontinued some time soon. Such a lovely car to drive though.

    I wouldn’t trade my 981 BS with any 781. On a recent service visit I test drove a 718. Nice ride (no turbo lag) and has better low end torque but the thing sounds soulless. It sounds okay if you have never driven a 3.4L flat six. The sales prove out the problem...Overall drop in sales after the 4 cyl introduction: (20%) Boxster and (42%) Cayman per carsalesbase.com - Porsche response is to include sports exhaust as standard in the 2020 models. Hmm...

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, honestly, Boxster or Cayman standard 981 or S is slower than the 718. I did drive a 2016 Cayman and I did love the sound. Several subscribers said to try the 718 and so I did. Nothing sounds the same as the flat 6. I will not deny that. We have three if them. I won’t leave these cars. However, the 718 will kick your cars ass (unless you have a GTS) in power. Even the normal is faster. It is a tough decision. BTW. My turbo does not have the wonderful flat six sound (even though it is) , but that Mezger engine will blow away the 718... Still and it is 15 years old! You have to find what fits you. Sounds like you did. That is awesome. Hang on to that car. You will regret getting rid of it.

    • @michaeldeangelo5599
      @michaeldeangelo5599 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a nice car, but not one I could recommend to people. Having been around Porsche for most of my adult life its reasonable to expect the 718 won't be in the Porsche line-up for long. The 718 name is a holdover from 50 years ago and most view this model as a "tribute" car. And, declining Boxster/Cayman sales support it. The next Boxster/Cayman will be electric - see article last week in Road and Track. For me, it will be easier to move from the NA flat-six to a hybrid/EV than that turbo four. I would rather have no noise than that fork in the blender sound. Save yourself some $ and grab a nice used 981 Boxster / Cayman. The NA flat six is highly coveted and may actually appreciate in value.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you are going to have to buy used or wait for something special like the Boxster Spyder (2016). Now and then Porsche might offer something, but I think Ashley is correct. It probably won’t happen because of the regulations.

    • @BourneAccident
      @BourneAccident 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashleyjames308 Maybe so, but my opinion is that simpler is better... especially from a maintenance point of view when they hit the market with high mileage.

    • @ashleyjames308
      @ashleyjames308 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bourne Accident The 718 engine is just 2/3rds of a 911 engine, so a tad simpler and potentially no less reliable.
      I think there may be some misunderstanding about the benefits of Turbos. In simple terms it means that a 718 has 100lb/ft more torque at 1950rpm than my 987 had at 4,500rpm, so now I have a 5,500 rev power band instead of a 2,500 rpm one. Thus the four is a much better engine on the road. It accelerates from any speed and extremely quickly.
      It also has the advantage of having better fuel consumption from a 2 litre engine when cruising than a 2.7.
      Since more and more engines are turbocharged now, Porsche had to do the same to compete. It would not be possible to make this much power without a turbo unless they’d fitted a larger six cylinder engine and in the UK and Europe that means doubling fuel consumption and increasing road fund license and insurance costs as well as not differentiating 718s from 911s. The two models have different customers.
      Finally I think it’s wrong to imply there is fault with Subaru engines because they’re incredibly durable and can give enormous power. I only hope my 718 engine lasts as well.

    • @BourneAccident
      @BourneAccident 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashleyjames308 Fair enough. I do agree with what you say, however I cannot afford to buy a new or even late model Porsche. I have two Boxsters. The 2008 S I purchased brand new. The 981 S I purchased as a high mileage vehicle. I do all my own repairs. So the thought of a turbo system has me a bit weak in the knees when it comes to maintenance on high mileage vehicles. Other than that, I agree that turbos are fantastic. I have one on my diesel truck (that just had to be replaced by the way and it wasn't cheap). So fair enough and I respect your opinion.

    Great video as always. But I have to respectfully disagree about this being a winter car. Putting snow tires does not make the car suddenly have the ability to go through ten inches of snow. It is too low to the ground. This ideal vehicle for the snow would be an all wheel drive, higher ground clearance with narrow snow tires. Driving a less than ideal vehicle in the snow is simply not worth the risk when there are much better options to choose from.

    I live in Denver and I drive a high performance turbo-charged 6 cylinder car. I don't think it's completely true that the turbo makes up for the altitude. In DC, my car is easily a second quicker. Anyway, the 718 is over-priced but let's cut Porsche a little slack. By running some wicked turbo boost, the 718 is performant and not slow. As I said, the price is a little greedy though.
