  • Cassius Clay, The Rock, Arnie. They all successfully re-invented themselves after cult status, and now Porsche is trying to do the same with the 718 'Boxster'. Question is though, now the straight six is defunct, does the new four-pot have what it takes? Subscribe to Autocar now: smarturl.it/autocar

    Just bought the 718 Cayman and was an owner of a previous 981 Generation-and other then the sound, the new 718 is dynamically better, in virtually every way. Excellent review by the way.

      Marc Nobel Might not be the case for the 718 GTS in time to come, as the trademark of the 718 is its flat 4

      Not sure about the GTS, but Models like the GT4 will still go with NA flat 6. Same to GT3 and GT3 RS and R Model of the 911.

    • @detaart
      @detaart 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +subaruwrxfan Hi Matt,
      The problem is that porsches are pretty much defined by their flat six engine.
      The cayenne or macan aren't exactly sports cars. People don't tend to care.
      Besides, a v8 cayenne sounds pretty sweet.

    • @pranavmukesh
      @pranavmukesh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      but they're not traditional Porsches. they're just holes in the market for the sake of selling. real Porsche's are the CAYMAN, boxster and the 911. I think the panamera is a proper Porsche as well because it is kind of a modern day 928. but Cayenne and Macan aren't "real" Porsche's

    Honestly, I prefer the sound of the 718. Ever since Porsche started putting roughly equal-length exhaust headers on their sixes, the sound has been a bit... clinical. Now the engine note has some personality again. whether or not it "sounds like a Porsche" may well depend on whether you're old enough to remember when some Porsches had flat-4 motors, or even when the flat 6's still had that nice boxer rumble. IMO this is a return to form. Count me as a fan of the 718.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You haven't even seen a 718, let alone heard one! What are you talking about?! And if you are like 99.9% of the people, you didn't have the chance to listen to a flat 6 for 5 minutes either, that is you probably never had the chance to drive one. Jesus... you posted that 3 months ago, where there weren't any 718s around, and still there are like 6 people to like this nonsense... that is TH-cam for you.

    • @Guy_de_Loimbard
      @Guy_de_Loimbard 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Baerchenization Perhaps you weren't aware that this and most other car review videos have, like, an audio track n' stuff to go along with the video?
      Look son, the number of cars I've owned over the decades probably comes close to the number of years you've been alive. I've owned one or more Chevy, Ford, Buick, Porsche, Volkswagen, Nissan, Mazda, Dodge, Saab, Audi, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and probably a couple others I don't feel like scouring from my memory banks right now, equipped with a whole variety of power plants -- I4s, I5s, flat-4s, flat-6s, conventional V6s, narrow-angle V6s, V8s, and even a rotary.
      I've heard enough exhaust notes over the years to know what I like and what I don't, even if I'm only hearing it in car review videos for the first time. And yes, I'm aware that the in-cabin exhaust note is often electronically enhanced/synthesized these days which is why I listen and judge the exhaust note from exterior shots only.

      Says someone who doesn't even have a Porsche to actually know what he's talking about. You can't tell it until you drive it. The flat 4 is fucking bullshit, feels the same as driving the new audi S3 or the golf R, but paying 40k more.

    • @Guy_de_Loimbard
      @Guy_de_Loimbard 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aitor Jara I've owned Porsches before and I don't have to own one now to know I prefer the sound of one over the sound of another. If you think driving one of the most well-balanced sports cars ever built feels the same as driving a nose-heavy, understeering hog like the S3 or Golf R, you have no business telling anyone they don't know what they're talking about.

    slightly ... a little bit ... ever so minute ... might ... not sure ... slightly less ... not as much ...
    Just say it! It's a four pot, and it's not slightly less involving, not a little bit worse, not just a bit less. It's a real loss, and a real shame.

    • @ashleyjames308
      @ashleyjames308 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      john m I’ve just bought one and it’s fantastic, the new four is a huge improvement, considerably faster everywhere and noticeably better handling. The old six was noisy, hard work and slow in comparison. Mine has the PDK too, which is much better than manual.

    • @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab
      @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashley James You need to book an appointment with your Doctor to get your ears checked out.
      You might have persuaded yourself, but you are not kidding anyone else.
      The new car's engine sounds worse that a Subaru. Faster. True, slight improvement in steering feel, but otherwise everywhere else seems worse. Turbo lag, (poor throttle response) weird droning sounds, rear lights look like Halfords aftermarket, cheap looking plasticky steering wheel, bland front bumper, no soul, no charisma, a major step backwards compared to wonderful looking and sounding 981. And yes, in case you hadn't guessed, I have driven both a lot. Driven 4x 718's (different models) Had a week with 718 Cayman and was glad to hand it back. A shame. On paper it sounds great but the reality is shocking.

    • @ashleyjames308
      @ashleyjames308 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Peter Oxley The 718 has GT4 rear suspension arms, a wider track and much better handling. The previous models never felt quite right IMO, whereas the 718 is beautifully balanced. There isn’t any obvious turbo lag just more power everywhere. The old six was a bit gutless unless you kept it above 4,500 when it was noisy and tiring on a journey. The new car is much quieter.
      Im sure you’re very upset because Porsche have rendered whatever you own out of date, but they had no alternative if they were going to make a faster car than hot hatches.

    • @ashleyjames308
      @ashleyjames308 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Oxley I think you made a mistake because I did the same as you, I had a 987, i agonised over a 981 and tried a 718 extensively. There are so many areas where the 981 falls short. But if you prefer the induction roar of a six and that’s what matters to you, I’m happy for you.
      TBH I think Porsche have customers like me who want a long distance touring car that’s fun to drive fast with the roof down etc and they have track day types who spend a fortune on exhausts and wheels and like brake callipers painted horrible colours that clash with the car. On the road in real world conditions, the 718 is a much faster, quieter, better handling, better riding car with a much better navigation system that operates with my iPhone. Even the headlights are a massive improvement. I thought it was a no brainer. 😉

    • @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab
      @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashley James No mistake, I can assure you. Porsche have lost their USP and made their car more like it's competitors from Audi, and in engine terms, inferior to Nissan, and BMW. They have made the mistake. As Chris Harris said: The 718 is still a great sports car...just not quite as great as the one before. In isolation it is ok. But not a keeper.😉

    I owned one of the last air-cooled 911s, so I do appreciate the Porsche flat-6. Having said that, I wonder if the sound of the 718 will be a disappointment to anyone who hasn't owned a 911 or "classic" Boxster. In other words, is the engine disappointing outright, or only in comparison to the traditional flat-6 benchmark?

    I think you're still to kind too kind to that awful sounding 4 cilinder in it. It's a damn shame the flat 6 is gone. And not just because of the sound, or the throttle response, but because of the emotion a NA engine brings in it's power delivery. And I'm not saying that as a Porsche purist, but as a sports car purist.

    • @TassieLorenzo

    It's like F1. The drama is gone. They might get faster lap times with these new Power Unites (PU) but that rumbling that gave you goosebumps is gone. The same with this new Porsche. I've got to say Ferrari did a great job with 488 GTB. Specially as the torque increases with every gear and you don't get full torque like in most sports cars. A lot of torque is good in a race car, not in a sports cars.

  • @ashleyjames308
    @ashleyjames308 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Turbos are all about torque and power. You can only get more power by getting more fuel into an engine. There are two ways to do it; more revs or forced induction.
    The six was hard work and noisy, the 718 is fast everywhere and a vast improvement, it flies from any speed anywhere. Everything is easier, faster and more relaxing. The GT4 rear suspension is also a lot better and enables faster cornering.
    The 718 completely outclassed the 981.
    I’ve just got mine and I’m sold.

      Mac Arows haha seriously? His only complaint was it lost 2 cylinders and everyone is complaining about the sound being horrible and you think the Tesla Model 3 with no cylinders and no sound is what Porsche buyers want? Tesla’s are cool but i’d buy a turbo 4 banger Porsche with the best handling chassis ever produced and more power and torque than the previous Caymans NA 6 over the Tesla any day. The auto industry is seeing a progression from large displacement naturally aspirated to small displacement turbo charged and ultimately and unfortunately electric. Someday electric will rule the world and any of us who are still alive will lament the sound of a combustion engine at start up and roaring down the road.

    Porsche already has a modern, efficient flat 6 motor... in the new 911s. Using a 4-pot for "emissions" is a bullish*t excuse. From where i stand, its Porsche's way of demoting the cayman/boxster to much below the 911 as the 981 cayman/boxster actually got better reviews that their bigger brother. Porsche felt they were losing sales of 911s to cayman/boxsters. Hence the 4-pot.

      +Michael Panayi I don't really know what is so demeaning about a 4 cylinder engine other than the sound, personally I find the concept of a middle placed turbo 2.5 flat four very attractive. You could make the argument of the torque at the top end, but I don't go 8/10 or 10/10 every time I drive. This is a road car so the torque is better suited for its purpose, it weights less and it's certainly less thirsty.
      I don't know about you but to me this seems like a much more competent road car than the last generation. I'm willing to sacrifice the sound for all this.

    • @TheCa007
      @TheCa007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex Serranoit
      It 718 4 cylinder weights more than the 981 flat 6, because of the turbos and uses just as much fuel if not more when you punch it there is no advantage. Other than a cheaper product for more money.

    • @mpanayi1
      @mpanayi1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex Serrano unfortunately, the 718 actually weighs more than the previous generation, and under real driving conditions, the turbo motor is not more efficient that the old motor. Also, regarding the concept of a 4 cylinder, you have to remember this is a 60k car. For 60k, you expect the motor to be special, not just capable. No one is denying that the 718 performance is better, but its not a special motor, just capable A VW golf (much cheaper) has a 4-pot motor, and is also capable, but no one would call the engine special. Also, haven driven the 981 cayman, cayman s and gts, none of them are lacking in torque especially when combined with the PDK gearbox. regardless, the 718 is still a great car, i just can't standing the marketing crap in justifying a repositioning of the boxster/cayman to be clearly a poor man's 911.

      Because of the sound, the free inertial force and the free mass moment, therefore you need a balance shaft. The flat six doesn't need that. This is why they are so torquey but still like to rev.
      If you have the chance, drive a manual 911 Carrera S with the 3.8 flat six. You'll know what I mean.

    It would be rather funny if we ever reached a production car with a v24 cylinder engine, and then the following replacement would have to make due with a turbocharged v16. People would still complain. Its all relative. At least we still have the beautiful sounds of internal combustion available to us. There'll be a day when it won't. Enjoy the explosions. Enjoy the turbo whistle. Enjoy the breakdowns that are that flaw in cars, that exists in anything beautiful. Live in the now, appreciate the past and accept the future. Imagine a used Cayman in 5 years or so with the 2.0 litre engine. Costs as much as a hot hatch to run. It would be a bargain! What I hate however is Porsche's daylight running lights. Surely, with technology the way it is in 2016, we can have the best of both worlds? 6Cyl's are great, but ultimately are part of a dying breed, like big V12's. Unfortunately emissions regs are now so tight the heyday of big N/A screamer engines are dying, as always there will be a few last bastions of it, but most of the cars people will actually buy will be 4cyl.
    4 cylinders doesn't need to mean dull, unrefined, and well, crap. If we have to go turbo, surely use the turbos to enhance the fun elements? It's 2016, surely we can have best of both worlds, quiet, economical and doing the daily grind, but flick the sport mode on, the turbo's can be made to whistle, chirp and make the sounds of the turbo'd cars of the 80's, when turbocharged meant powerful. So the turbos add to the noise, and enhance the fun element rather than purely used to increase emissions and tried to be kept silenced. I love a big, screaming angry V8, but I know that ultimately they're something that will come the reserve of the big supercars we see with V12's now.
    I don't mind turbos, as it can add extra elements of usability to cars, but I don't like how they're relentlessly silenced, if I have to have a turbo, then I want to be able to hear it.
    I reckon that with the new 718, Porsche have added an extra element of daily use to it that may appeal to more people and ultimately sell more cars. Nobody in a sports car wants to be out-dragged by the TDI brigade, so having a turbo stops that, and means the car can do reasonable economy when you don't want to hoof it around. It seems that modern turbo'd engines mean you can effectively have your cake and eat it, performance, and reasonable economy.
