    I’ve got one. I must say that the sound on videos doesn’t do the car justice at all. It’s not a flat 6 but it still sounds really good in my opinion. I’ve had a flat 6 Boxster before and whilst it did sound better than the 718 in the upper range when you were razzing it at 6000rpm, I think the 718 sounds better and more beefy at the lower end - and with it being my daily drive car and not a track car, this works great for me. Just my opinion but I’m super happy with mine.

    I have just bought one of these as my first Porsche and trust me, compared to 99% of road cars, the 718 is great and great fun......The other unbelievable thing is the attention it gets. Everyone wants to talk about it, you get loads of looks and what I'm discovering is that if you own a Porsche - people clearly think you are on top of your game - I'm even getting new clients because of it ! LOL!

    • @redtvproductions1
      @redtvproductions1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you will get new clients. Clients was to deal with successful people and the extra business pays for the car. Simple really but I always buy new cars because i know thats how it works. I have a Mercedes cabriolet now and thats 5 years old but going like new with 220ks on it. thing is I would still keep it but am really thinking about a new Cayman. Im not worried about the motor because Im older and not a boy racer. it sounds good to me.

    I wouldn't change the Carfection intro with the shots and sound of the 718 Boxter S. Having said that, I think it is an excellent car. As car enthousiasts, we can't change the regulations and the way the industry is heading. We just have to enjoy what car companies still produce and with that in mind, I think this is an excellent car. I love the new rear of the car.

  • @RealRaynedance

    I don't know about anyone else, but I think the 4-cylinder sound fits the look of the car more than the 6. And it's better than just having another flat-6 sound come out of yet another Porsche.

    Some people don't like the 718 name. What they don't understand is the OG 718 was the first small displacement racer to show it can still dance with the best of'em. This 4 cylinder is showing that same principal

    The turbo's were an inevitable outcome for Porsche and we were slightly skeptical when we heard that the new Boxster was going to have this engine but knowing Porsche it will still be great to drive. We love our 981 Spyder so it'll be interesting to see what they do with the 718 platform. Great video!

    Very good review, having had the 987 Boxster S the engine was amazing, but I can imagine with the additional performance, torque and MPG theres more than enough to offset the less exotic engine note!

  • @XenoX101
    @XenoX101 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You forgot to mention an important point that still keeps it firmly in performance car/track car territory. It beat the outgoing Boxster's time at the Nurburgring ring by a whopping 14 seconds, with a time of 7:42. That puts it in company with the Nissan GT-R, Audi R8 V10, and on par with the Cayman GT4; whilst being I believe the fastest 4 cylinder on the Ring yet. Also should keep in mind that this is the first 4 cylinder sports car Porsche has made in a very long time. The fact that they've done as well as they have is quite remarkable, and sets a great foundation for future models to come. Lastly, I don't think 4 cylinder needs to be equated with 'bad sounding'. The best motorcycles have inline 4 cylinder engines, and they sound incredible (S1000RR, Panigale 899). I'm sure there's opportunity for improvement if they spend enough R&D on it (which - given the current emission standards - they pretty much have to).

    Anyone who knows the 5k+ rpm howl of a flat six will not be satisfied with the flat-4 sound. Is it acceptable? Sure. But they haven't made it great .. yet. I suspect it'll come in time. My question is .. why not have a flat-6 2.0 liter with turbos? Wonder what that would sound like.

    • @RealRaynedance
      @RealRaynedance 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrSlash00r I'm guessing it's harder to put more cylinders into a smaller package and make more power, turbos or not, and still get more mileage out of it. I'm no car expert though.

      They will go back to 6 cylinder if no-one buys it, just watch. I think they added the 718 at the beginning of it's name because it wasn't worthy of the 'Boxster' name, and this is just a short term model for a couple of years, then they will drop the 718 and go back to 6 cylinder.

    • @ashleyjames308
      @ashleyjames308 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tim the flat four engine is a big improvement over the six, it’s hugely faster at any speed for a start. Makes the old six feel like it’s dragging a boat anchor. Just traded up to a 718 and sold.

      100% agree, especially about the looks. There has been loads of written commented and now generally accepted as the awful noise coming out of the tailpipe (or lack there of) But nobody has spoken about how the smoothing of the front fenders has really softened it's exotic looks and has taken away something the 981 finally established... A presence. The back spoiler also looks like an aftermarket spoiler you would buy at Pepboys...

    Forgetting the noise for a second I drove this car (non S model) back to back with an Audi TT roadster and my perception was:
    - Audi steering was a bit too light to my taste but still much more precise than my 2011 A7 (yes I know not quite a comp able car).
    - Audi understeer was stlightly present but not overwhelming
    - Audi perceived quality felt excellent (buttons click, virtual cockpit response, dash layout).
    - Porsche turbo lag very present from low RPMs in normal mode, no issue in sport mode (thanks to Chromo package).
    - Handling of the 718 was surgically precise
    - built quality feels a bit sturdier in 718.
    Even more subjective comment:
    - in the Audi men were looking at the car
    - in the Porsche ladies were looking at me :)))
    - I felt like a pilot in the Porsche (that I am not)
    - The Porsche sounded nice with open top. Quiet with top down.
    - The Audi REALLY sounded great !!! (top up or down).
    - I felt like a rock star in the 718 :p
    I am still hesitating between which one to buy ...

I paid 42k for my 2013 Boxster with 20k miles, and a similar 911 would be 65K-75K. That is a totally different price class.

    Even if there were no regulations, these cars would end up as they are today. The days of pure Porsche cars was when Porsche sold a handful cars each year, not as now over 200,000 cars. And these new customers to the bigger and more luxurious 911 or this turbo Boxster, have no connection to those "pure" times. Just think Porsche SUV :)
    The same can be said about BMW M-cars, which are now big, luxurious and very fast cars. Not better drivers cars, but then again, look who are buying them and you can't even imagine any of them (but a very few) actually getting close to the car's limits. Purists and actual buying customers are almost never the same.

    People gotta stop bitching about technology moving forwards. Times change, boundaries change and expectations should change also. True competitive technology is all about challenging convention. Its no point getting nostalgic about technology, it is always changing. I love classics and vintage cars as much as the next person, in some case more. But I don't expect new cars to keep old technology because 'that's what we're used to'. Buy old cars for old tech and dram, buy new cars for new tech, efficiency and performance. The pursuit of performance has to be a relentless one, otherwise we'd all still be in caves because some hairy bastard decided he was comfortable where he was.

    I get the need for downsizing. But why couldn't Porsche keep the 6 cylinders but just reduce the displacement? I'm sure you'd get the same results, while retaining some of the Porsche character.
    Plus, I know they're less efficient, but why aren't sports car manufactures using superchargers? You still have the ability to boost the engine, without affecting the sound. This has been proven with the F-Type.

    Other cars with turbo fours sound far better than the 718. Come on Porsche is this really the best you can make it sound?

  • @rower67i
    @rower67i 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, people still don’t get it: The future of 718 as well as 911 is electric engine support and beyond. How is it going to be made? Gradually. Porsche will draw the update path as they will progress through that evolution. Nobody knows the final list of ingredients or the bill of materials - not even Porsche. Technology must mature. Needs to become available, achievable. And compromises must be achieved. Porsche will do it in the way which they believe would not upset the fan base. Now, into the hybrid engine package - how many cylinders you’d need with that at the the end of the road? Well, probably three. Maybe two... who knows? The chassis must become lighter... and lighter... and lighter. So why bother with the big motor concepts??? Why bother with the boxer even?! - Yup! Boxer has to go 2. Why petrol? Maybe diesel, maybe rotary? Maybe engine in every wheel??? Who knows where innovation will take us?

  • @TheBairuike
    @TheBairuike 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you produce a 911 with a flat 6, then it can't be impossible to produce a boxster with flat 6 because of "regulation". This just sounds like an excuse. Why not improve the car but keep the flat 6 ? The better fuel economy is abolutels marginal and I'd say totaly irrelevant when you take the number of these produces into account.
    The only reason to go flat4 seems to be the artifical distance to the 911. I think that prices on the used marked for the last flat 6 gen will relatively soon be above the prices for a new one.

    • @DrakorGaet
      @DrakorGaet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Patrick Schulz Actually, Porsche engeniers were interviewed as to why they went for the flat 4. They said that due to emission rgulations they simply had no other choice but to go for turbo charging. Problem was, though, the engine bay of the Boxster is really small and cramped. Installing turbos on flat 6s ended in really dangerous thermal problems and several cases of overheating. Of course thy could just get rid of the trunk and get more space, but they could not do that for some reason. Thus, to safely install trubos and not having to worry about owners perishing in burning wreckages (happened with other models and that is nothing short of bad publicity) they developed a new flat 4, which gave them enough room for the trubos. That is the official story and owning a Boxster S myself, which gave me the opportunities to actually see the engine bay, I believe that to be true. It is really cramped in there... The 911 has a lot more space. I will keep my older Boxster, however. For now that is.

    • @TheBairuike
      @TheBairuike 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DrakorGaet
      Do you know, if a facelifted model is subject to new regulations ? Otherwise, why not keep making the "old" engine for another 5 years ? Do they suddenly become illegal to sell ?

    • @DrakorGaet
      @DrakorGaet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Patrick Schulz I am sorry, but my knowledge about these regulations is very limited. I do, however, believe that the decision to introduce the engine now has something to do with their startegic decision making process regarding marketing and product management for the coming years. Thus, introducing the engine now must have some ulterior motive regarding some form of startegy for the future. I am far to inexperienced in exploratory innovation decision making processes as of now so all I could do is speculate about the motive.

    O,,,,,the move to forced induction 4cly drivetrain across the Boxster/Cayman cars is HUGH..... The aural signature made up from the out going models 6cly's exhaust and induction is memorable. Times they are a change'in... I'll keep my MY98 C2S 911 (993) air cooled if not only for its scream........ The coupe has the time honored DIY exhaust mod know as the LMPP.... Basically a 2" dia tube "short circuit" at the muffler can exterior.

      The last one met emissions standards. Quote from CarMagazine "He also said that in normal driving, the fuel efficiency of the old 3.4 and new 2.5-litre flat-four is ‘about the same, but the new engine has much more power’."
      The old pdk boxster S had CO2 of 188g/km
      New pdk 718 Boxster S has C02 of 167g/km, hardly any difference, about 10%. If no-one buys it, I betcha it will go back to 6 cylinder. They just did this to keep it away from the 911.

  • @charlesmiller6281
    @charlesmiller6281 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason, which none of you reviewers bothers to mention, why earlier cars like the 718 were so wonderful, is that car makers back then were mostly free to make whatever they wanted. Porsche did not give up on the flat 6 and Porsche did not want to go turbo. Porsche- and everyone else- is being forced into it by nameless unelected regulators. It is shameless and disgusting that you reviewers make it sound like this is the kind of "progress" Porsche wanted when you all know it most certainly is not.

    • @xaionik
      @xaionik 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Charles Miller "Nameless unelected regulators"? You mean the legislative branches of western countries? Those were elected and they created laws to reduce CO2 emissions. It is progress because they achieved more power with less even though it doesn't sound the same.

    • @101ktm
      @101ktm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      altered trajectory underwhelming ?? The base is faster than the outgoing flat 6 S model you dumb arse. So the old Cayman must have been even more underwhelming. Or your comment pertained to the "sound" only and not the better performance, horsepower, torque and technology. I have driven both and the 718 hits sooner, harder and pulls to redline. Oh yeh and using the word “panache" makes me know you wear slacks and tie your sweater around your neck with your collar up.

    lifestyle car? I thought the boxster was for people that wanted a sports car that isnt a track car or a gt and also understand that mid engine is better than rear? The lifestyle car is the slk or z4.

    • @TheBIGJake111
      @TheBIGJake111 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pontiff Sulyvahn TT is and always has been beneath the other german roadsters. The build quality is better than z4 (my gf drives a manual 2008 z4 and the top has already broken and the door latch litterally fell off) but the tt has always been basically an almost FWD almost golf. The tt sort of bridges the gap between civic si fiesta golf, with z4 slk and s2k. then the boxster/cayman bridges those with stuff like the ferrari 360 and audi r8.

    I've owned both a 981 Cayman S MT with sports exhaust and currently have a 718 GTS 2.5L MT. I think the 718 is a much better car overall for around town/back road driving. It feels more connected from the suspension/steering updates and urgent because of the torque from the turbo. I love the sound too especially the crackles after you give it a rip in Sport mode. It is so much fun on back roads. The flat 6 sounds lovely in the 981 but if you're in the wrong gear (and gearing in both is way too tall) you'll be left for dead and there isn't enough torque to really feel fast around town. Either is great though depending on what you're looking for. There are very few manual sports cars left and I will be so sad to see 718 production end.
