I wish you had shown your sewing after turning the elastic! Do you only sew at the dots? The rest is just loose? Such a great video of you explaining AND showing at the same time.
Craftsman of elastic waist, exquisite sewing. I am very short waisted so the less bulk the better. Thank you for a splendid tutorial. Greetings from Cornwall 😊 UK

Before finding your video I used to do casing and never quite liked the results.
I am currently making a second skirt with your technique. 🎉 (Of course it’s a last minute project for tonight. 😅)
Excellent technique with the serger. Thank you!
That's a brilliant and most perfect way to join elastic. I could never come up with it
Brilliant!! And logical too. Thank you!!

Thank you Elsabe.
Thank you so much Elsabe. Love it
Hi Lydia, thanks for watching. I appreciate it so much
A lovely finish for your skirt - like your elastic band method! I assume this is only applicable to stretch fabrics as removing any extra fabric at the waist on a woven would be next to impossible to get on or off - haha. Thank you for such an informative video - you even took the time to explain how to start and finish with your serger! Will be looking for more of your videos as even though I've been sewing a long time, there is a wealth of experience out there and love learning tips and techniques from others. Thank you very much
Hi Dianne, thank you for watching and leaving a comment. You are correct that this method is for stretch fabrics. If I work with woven fabric i prefer having darts and a zip.
My favorite waistband as well! Thank you for the excellent tutorial.
Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it
Thans for these excellent tips on joing the elastics!,one qeustion, why do you not dip your pattern 1 cm. In the center back

Thank you so much
This video is so valuable I can't express my gratitude for it. I always Didn't Like the bulge of elasticated waistband but liked the ease of sewing them. The gathered fabric also adds unattractive volume to stomach area.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it so much.
Great tips. Thanks for all the time you put into making the video. I am somewhat new to sewing so such practical videos help me so much.
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it so much

@@ElsabeHurn Interesting how you do not stretch the elastic as you are attaching it. Another knit skirt designer makes a point of that. So sorry if you mentioned but how do you determine the length of the elastic? Waist minus 2 inches? Or metric equivalent?
Very helpful. Just found your channel.
Norma, thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I appreciate it so much
Thankyou for surging tips. I just applied your method to my pyjama elastic. I really liked how you ended the stitches, it worked out fantastic!!! Your instructions were very easy to follow. Thankyou so much!
Thank you for letting me know. I appreciate all feedback
I have a question, the last stitch is is a straight stitch or zigzag?
This is brilliant, Elsabe! Thank you. I've always been dissatisfied with elastic waist applications.
Thank you for watching. I would love to know once you try it.
VERY helpful!
Although I do not own an overlocker.
How would I then put the elastic?
You can still use this technique on your sewing machine. Use a zig-zag stitch or multi-step zigzag stitch. This stitch sews 3 small stitches each time it goes left to right and right to left.
How do you work out the size of the darts? I love the way you have done the waist.
For the finish do you sew around the band to secure the elastic or just at the darts and side seams?
Thank you for this Elsabe. I do like this finish and have one question. What is the measurement of the elastic in proportion to your waist measurement
I always put the elastic around my waist to measure. I don’t measure my pattern. I will shorten the elastic a little bit and again feel on my body what it feels like. Because I leave darts in for shaping the elastic does not need to be stretched so much when sewing in.
I understand how to work out the size of the dart, but how far away from the side seam should they be? My pattern doesn't have any darts.
Great tutorial.
Would this work as well with woven fabric or is it only suitable for stretch?
Because of my body shape I prefer my garments in woven fabric to have darts and a zip. With wovens you need more circumference on the waist to be able to pull the garment over your hips, so I find that a casing for the elastic looks neater.
@@ElsabeHurn I am the opposite to you, big belly and small hips, so pulling things up isn't a problem.. I'll give it a go.
Hi Elsabe I would like to know what would the measurements of the elastic
Hi Saffiya. I always put the elastic around my waist to measure. I don’t measure my pattern. I will shorten the elastic a little bit and again feel on my body what it feels like. Because I leave darts in for shaping the elastic does not need to be stretched so much when sewing in.
South African accent? Grâce pour l'information
Hi Amber, you are correct 🤗 I am South African. I am busy adding subtitles to all my videos as I am getting so many request from international customers for different languages.
thanks Elsabe, never done this type finish
Is that non roll elastic that we get in SA
Yes, just the normal non roll we get at the fabric shops.
Wonderful tutorial, thank you. I always have trouble with my elastic. How do I know the length of elastic that I must use? The shorts for my husband is always pukkering(?) too much. Thanks in advance
Hi Nicolene, when working with a woven you need enough fabric to go over the hips. If you have a lot of extra ease in the waist(more fabric) and the elastic is a lot smaller than the fabric it can cause puckering. I usually wrap the fabric around my waist and then pull it in slightly to make it more snug. It is usually2.5cm - 5cm I take of, depending on the recovery of the elastic. I don't use calculations as it never works for me.
@@ElsabeHurn Thank you for your reply, hopefully I will get it right next time. Blessings
Thank you for the tutorial! The major problem with this kind of waistband is elastic always flips out, even though it has been stitched down at sides. Does anyone know how to stop these kind of waistband from rolling?
You notice she stitched the elastic down at the darts in the dart “seam” or the ditch. Also, you may be pulling the elastic too much and when it tries to recover it is pulling your fabric up.

I will look into adding subtitles to my videos.
