Bless you. Seriously, blessings on you and your household and everything you love, this is the first time I’ve actually seen and understood how to sew a friggin elastic waistband…I can’t imagine how much elastic and fabric I’ve wasted over the years in vain attempts!! THANK YOU!!!

    EXTREEEEEEEEEEMLY EXTREMELY HELPFUL! THANK YOUUUUUU!.
Just made my first elasticated waist skirt out of a dress that didn't fit right. I was so sad that I had ruined the beautiful dress when I tried to fidget around with it. And I envied those who can sew. Then out of the blue, (inspiration from above) I decided I should get a sewing machine... and intended to enrol onto sewing classes. Well, today is my 1st full week of owning a sewing machine, and have had 1 class, which just covered the basics so far.
EVERYTHING ELSE - 98% - I HAVE LEARNT from folks like you here on youtube and a bit from a booklet. Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. This was my 1st attempt at an elastic band skirt, through your explanation and demonstration, which you did so well.
I can now report that I am able to sew ^_^, make an elasticated waistband and ''edit'' my garments. It's still early days, but all this learning from you guys here, has saved me a LOT of time and effort (from hand sewing), and money from having to go to the tailors... and saving me money from going to extra classes. ^_^.
    SO thank you. :D
I look forward to HOPEFULLY one day being a pro like yourselves ^_^ . Well at least being able to make a garment from scratch. That alone will be a wondrous achievement for me. Hugs from the UK.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Had to be something easier than sewing a casing. I'm allergic to both latex and nylon, so I have difficulty with the elastic on masks. Since I've gone to making my own, I needed a fabric overing and this was perfect. I made a couple of changes just for finishing that I thought I'd share since I didn't want the fabric edges showing.
For 1/4" elastic, pulled it out to see how long I needed to cut the fabric, and cut the fabric an inch wide. Instead of aligning it to one side, I sewed it just a 16th of an inch to one side from middle and sewed with the zig-zag. Then double folded both edges towards the middle and straight stitched down the middle. That trick with the steam sure worked. I ended up with exactly the size of the elastic I cut and even stretched to the max, it was entirely covered in fabric with the edges hidden. THANKS!!!

I'm glad that you thought this! I was thinking the same. I was thinking "It's 2023 and there has to be something simpler than casing, where you can use what is already done to simplify it." Yay!

Thank you, this has been very helpful because I have a dress pattern that requires this method of applying the elastic band.
However, I don't really like elastic bands sewn this way because I have a store bought dress using this method. Elastic bands get old and loses its stretch..... but after this video, knowing how it's done, it doesn't seem so impossible now to to undo the old and replace with new elastic band YAY ♥

I am now your subscriber. Thank you for making this detailed video. I have been through five others with frustration, but yours was great! I am a former home economics teacher, but focused my teaching in disciplines other than sewing, so it has been over thirty years since I sewed an elastic waistband; just looking for a refresher video. If I was teaching a sewing class, your video would be my choice to show students as a video visual demonstration. A read model in a black leotard would have been helpful to see how to determine the length of elastic. Your spirit and voice are peaceful, and I look forward to watching more of your videos. You may make sewing a new hobby for me...and I need one other than cooking and baking!!!

Just WOW !!! I have been searching for this method of sewing elastic into my garments for what seems like forEVer !!! I appreciate your sharing this video with us. I have a few questions though ... Would it be alright if you didn't do the straight stitch over the zig - zag stitch ? Also, with the "very wide" elastics, do you need to put the stitches at both the top and bottom of the wide elastic strips ? Or, would just one row of stitches suffice, being down the middle of them ? I appreciate your advice and help with all this. And, TYSM for sharing this video with us !!! 👍😉👍

In determine how much elastic, make sure you can get it over your hips! Many women have a bigger bottom or belly than their waist, so pin that elastic together first and put it on as you would you pants or skirt to make you can get it over those curves!

I have an at the knee pair of shorts that has a draw-string that won't stay tied with a bow knot. Elastic is the answer for keeping the shorts from sliding down. The draw-string could be hand sewn in place permanently. Today is the 1st week anniversary of my sewing machine purchase and tomorrow I sew elastic. ✓ Thank You for this video❣️

Good video tutorial -- even after all these years. Part way thru when y ou mention measuring you waist ... and then "going back a couple of inches" I can't actually see if you're making the elastic LARGER (to allow for side/back seams in a garment) or a couple of inches SMALLER so there's added amount of snug. Hope you or someone can answer.

At 7:01 "We're going to go back to a straight stitch," this is followed by "We're going to increase the stitch width" at 7:06. Did you mean stitch length? Or is there some mysterious thing I'm missing about increasing stitch width on a straight stitch? A lot of sewing still seems mysterious to me. Thank you.

With all these glowing comments I feel sad to say that your method while its probably great with other fabric and or other elastic did not work for me the elastic remained stretched and di not pop back like you said it would . . . probably my materials different ect. So sad but Its probably good with something else. I was so hoping this would solve my problem fixing the waist band on a skirt. Guess I will try something else I have one more shot at it before i run out of fabric or otherwise ruin the project
